Jake was quick to act. Gengar was to redirect Swift with Psychic, which she promptly attempted to do. The thing, though, is that while this wouldn't be an issue with most moves, Swift was not most moves. The big thing about Swift is that it does not miss its intended target, and the attempt to guide them away from said target was met with heavy resistance. Not only was Gengar going to have to keep her focus on keeping the stars moving away from Staravia and towards Melittin, but she had to also actually keep up with Melittin. Which, as became evident when the Mega Beedrill took off, was no easy feat. Melittin was zipping through the air in a tremendous display of speed and acrobatics, flying everywhere except into the Heat Wave, sometimes too fast for the eye to follow, such was the speed of Mega Beedrill. This allowed Melittin to land the hit from behind, a potent Poison Jab which, while lacking the Swords Dance boost thanks to Haze, still hit hard regardless.

"Oooh! That's gotta hurt!" Gavin exclaimed as Poison Jab landed. "Staravia just took a Poison Jab from Mega Beedrill, and Swords Dance or no Swords Dance, that is pain right there! Mega Beedrill's packing Adaptability, after all, so its Bug and Poison moves are even stronger than they'd normally be!"

"Keep it going, Mel!" Keith called out. "Agility!"

Melittin buzzed sharply in response, and seemed to fly all over the battlefield at once, maintaining even more incredible speeds. If Gengar had any chance of landing that redirected Swift, she'd have to follow all that movement while keeping her psychic grip on the stars- if she let go for even an instant, they'd go right back to chasing down Staravia.

"Eon, keep up the pressure on Gengar!" Keith continued as the Shiny Eevee winced in pain from the Curse. "Glitzy Glow once again!"

"Keith is not letting up an inch here!" Gavin grinned. "Already Gengar's gotta be under some pressure to keep trying to redirect that Swift attack. How can it possibly keep that going and deal with Glitzy Glow at the same time?"

"Hold on just one frickin' minute!" Jake exclaimed. "How was that Poison Jab able to hit despite the Haze? Welp, change of plans, Gengar! Direct the Swift towards yourself, and counter that Glitzy Glow with Hex, again! And use Shadow Punch on Beedrill!"

"Gen ga!" exclaimed Gengar. She promptly used her Psychic to direct the Swift stars to herself, absorbing the attack with her Ghost type. As the Glitzy Glow headed towards her, it was blocked by the purple glow of Hex, and both attacks broke with the force of them together—neither won out. Then, she struck the ground with her left fist, and a ghostly fist came up from the ground to strike Melittin the Mega Beedrill. However fast he could go wouldn’t be enough to dodge a Shadow Punch.

"Don’t forget the Haze!" added Jake, to which Gengar covered the battlefield in black steam again. Beedrill would lose his recently acquired Speed boost very quickly.

Staravia noticed that Jake was too busy with Gengar to issue his Starling Pokémon a command. Oh well, at least Staravia was familiar enough with Jake’s battle style to act on his own accord sometimes. He took advantage of the very low visibility from Haze to Roost, before circling behind Eon to use Quick Attack—nothing special, except his blinding fast speed, as before. He’d hit and run, uh, fly.

Keith chuckled. "It'll take more than some Haze to mess with my Pokémon," he grinned. Said grin widened as Jake called for a Shadow Punch. "If we can't dodge it, we'll hit it head-on!" he declared. "Full-power Drill Run, go!"

Melittin stopped zipping all over the place, and, stingers still in place, started rotating with absurd speed. When the Shadow Punch emerged, Melittin met it with the powerful Ground move, the two attacks clashing against each other.

"They say the best offense is a good defense, but in this case, it's the exact opposite," Gavin remarke. "There's no dodging a Shadow Punch, so Keith's taking it on instead!"

Meanwhile, Keith noticed Jake wasn't giving Staravia any orders, and this only made both Keith and Eon a lot warier. "Heads-up, Eon!" Keith called. "Use Synchronoise!"

"Ooeeee... VEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!" trilled Eon. In addition to her own cries, she emitted a peculiar sound, a damaging one. It would only be audible, and therefore effective against, her fellow Normal-types, which, fortunately, included Staravia.

At that point, Drill Run and Shadow Punch had cancelled each other out. "Good, Mel- now keep spinning!" Keith exclaimed. "And unleash your Ominous Wind attack!"

"And there goes Mega Beedrill!" Gavin exclaimed. "Look at that, ladies and gentlemen, look at that Ominous Wind go!" Indeed, the spinning meant the Ominous Wind was flying in every direction. Eon and Staravia, of course, wouldn't be affected, but Gengar sure would. And more to the point, the eerie gusts were also serving to clear out the Haze!

With this done, Keith was able to get a look at Eon. She still looked worked up for the battle, but no longer looked at Gengar with murderous intent- Keith realized the Taunt must have worn off. "Grassy Terrain, let's go!" he exclaimed.

"VUI!" Eon exclaimed. Her front paws glowed green and she slammed them into the battlefield. Amid the continuous Ominous Wind, those looking could see a green pulse of energy ripple throughout the battlefield, followed shortly by the rapid growth of lush green grass. She still winced in pain as the Curse continued to take its toll, but the idea was that the Grassy Terrain would help restore the Shiny Eevee's energy.

(Just so you know, Synchronoise isn't actually a sound-based move.)

Gengar just cackled as Melittin met the Shadow Punch with Drill Run. The nature of the way Gengar used Shadow Punch meant that even directly hitting the move wouldn't hurt her whatsoever. And while the Mega Beedrill was busy dealing with the Ghost-type move, the Category Shadow Pokémon took that as an opportune time to let loose.

"You've got it backwards, Gavin!" Jake called out. "They actually say that the best defense is a good offense! And...that's exactly what Keith's doing, so you do have something correct there." He looked at Staravia and immediately caught on with a simple read of the Normal/Flying-type's aura. "Staravia, don't worry about that misnomer of a move! Carry on with that Quick Attack! Gengar, Hypno Shade on Beedrill while it's distracted!"

Staravia quickly dodged the shockwave coming at him and zipped into the Shiny Eevee with great speed. Meanwhile, the Mega Beedrill's spinning had only served to direct the Hypno Shade that Gengar released, around him. Now everywhere he looked, the hypnotic waves would sink right into him along with the illusion-inducing Ghost-type move. And in the event that he still managed to get an Ominous Wind off, Gengar would be releasing still more of the Night Shade-Hypnosis combination; it would additionally repel the Ominous Wind.

And this time, Jake would actually pay more attention to Staravia. "Double-Edge on Eevee, bring it on!" he called. He had to negate the Grassy Terrain's healing effect.

"Starrravia!" exclaimed Staravia. He flew towards the Eevee in a "life-risking tackle", such was another name for the move, which activated his Reckless Ability. Staravia's Double-Edge would be especially powerful thanks to that boost, and he made sure to have just enough control to dodge anything Eon might throw at him.

Keith gritted his teeth- to be able to evade Synchronoise! Staravia was no joke! And then that Double-Edge, not to mention Gengar's attempt at attacking Melittin... "It won't work!" Keith declared. "Melittin, attack Gengar directly! We'll use a combination of our own- Shadow Drill!" Melittin responded at once, abruptly stopping the Ominous Wind usage, and instead generating a powerful blast of evil energy. Gengar might be the Shadow Pokémon, but she wasn't a Shadow Pokémon, and therefore the move would be super effective. But that wasn't all- still spinning still rotating the drill-like stinger, Melittin charged right at Gengar, cloaked in that powerful energy. A combination of Horn Drill and Shadow Blast. Ideally it would land before Gengar could even unleash Hypno Shade.

While this was happening, Keith turned his attention to Eon. Staravia was closing in quick with Double-Edge, and Keith knew he had to respond with a powerful move of his own. Ideally one that Staravia had no hope of dodging. "Eon, ready to fight back?" he called.

"Vui vui!" Eon responded eagerly.

Keith grinned. "Then let's do it! Veevee Volley, let's go!" he declared.

"Eeeeee... vuiiiiiiiiiiiiii!" Eon bellowed, charging right at Staravia with every ounce of strength she possessed, brimming with the energy to not only hit hard, but to also guarantee to hit no matter what Staravia might try. Of course there was a collision. Of course both attacks landed, and of course both Pokémon were hit hard.

"And it's a head-on collision between Double-Edge and Veevee Volley!" Gavin exclaimed. "Two power-packed moves used by two powerful Pokémon! Oh, they both have got to be feeling that!"

But Keith wasn't done there. For all his efforts to keep her in the fight, Keith knew good and well that Eon was almost beat here. That Double-Edge certainly took a toll on her hit points, and the Curse of course was still doing its thing. So it was now or never. "Now, Eon!!" Keith exclaimed, crossing his arms before him. The Poisonium Z set into his Z-Ring gleamed brightly with Z-Power.

"Vuiiiiiii!!" Eon exclaimed, glaring at the Staravia she'd just collided with.

"And Keith and Eevee are gearing up for a Z-Move!" Gavin declared. "A last-ditch effort, judging by how much damage that Eevee's taken, but a damn strong one!"

"Our minds, our spirits, linked as one!" Keith exclaimed as he moved his arms. "A power as intense as the Plague Swamp of Cascadia! Feel the poison- BE the poison!"

"Eeeevuiiiiii!" Eon responded, bellowing as the Z-Power flowed into her. It was her Gunk Shot move that this was powering up, that this was transforming, that this was turning into something different and infinitely more powerful.

"And now! Unleash our true power!" Keith exclaimed. "Use Acid Downpour!!!"

Melittin charging at Gengar with a combination move of his own just reminded Jake how notoriously inaccurate Horn Drill was. Besides, Shadow moves didn't have STAB, which gave a 1.5x power boost to moves of the user's own type. Any time a Shadow move was super effective, its power would also be boosted by 1.5x, and since Mega Beedrill had Adaptability, Shadow Blast would do even less damage than a neutral Poison Jab. "Gengar, Haze! Get away!" Jake ordered his Ghost/Poison-type.

Gengar wordlessly spewed out a black gas, clouding the vision of those around her—specifically the Beedrill. She mustered all the speed she had, plus the momentary distraction, to barely avoid the charging Mega Beedrill's attack. Where had that Hypno Shade gone? Hadn't she surrounded Melittin with it while he used Drill Run earlier?

Staravia collided head-on with the Eevee's Veevee Volley. He noticed that it seemed strangely weak somehow—did the Shiny Eevee not have full Bond? And as Eon and Keith began a Z-Move, the Starling Pokémon called out to Jake.

"Don't worry Staravia, we've got you!" Jake assured his Pokémon. "Gengar, get over here!"

"Genga Genga Gengar!" answered Gengar, quickly floating over to take a defensive stance in front of Staravia. Eon's fueling of Z-Power was rudely interrupted by a dastardly Sucker Punch, Gengar quickly firing an oblong burst of energy straight out of her mouth. It sped toward the Eevee in the blink of an eye, before she could react. The naturally quick Dark-type move struck Eon in the face, which would surely make her lose her concentration and maybe even defeat her. If not, at least Gengar's Poison type would lessen the damage of the Acid Downpour. Staravia couldn't say how grateful he was for Gengar taking all these Z-Moves.

If Gengar took the Acid Downpour, she would stumble out of the rubble, definitely hurt but still able to battle. She would Taunt Melittin and promptly follow up with a guaranteed Sucker Punch, which came before a regular attack.

Either way, Staravia would flap his wings with all he's got and blast the opponent(s) with Heat Wave.

Sucker Punch did nothing to disrupt the Z-Move. It did damage, no question, but Eon's concentration at that point was long past the point of breaking, and moreover, there was a glaring flaw in Jake's defense. Gengar standing in front of Staravia would work wonders for shielding him from a Z-Move that might be fired off in the form of a projectile of some sort.

Z-Moves that both temporarily altered the terrain below and rained down from above, on the other hand... Not so much.

"Oooh, and both Gengar and Staravia take the hit!" Gavin exclaimed as the toxic deluge rained down upon Gengar, Staravia, and the temporary swamp that had formed beneath them, pushing the former two into the latter for a big chemical reaction and equally big damage. "Acid Downpour doesn't normally claim two targets at once, but a defense like that might not have been the smartest idea. Aaaand... Ohhh! Staravia and Eevee are both unable to battle!" he declared. Indeed, Gengar had survived the Acid Downpour, while Staravia wasn't so lucky. And Eon's Acid Downpour had been her last move in this match, the Curse damage being the straw that broke the Numel's back. Maybe she would've taken less damage from Double-Edge had their Bond been a bit stronger... they had to work on that a bit, Keith had to admit.

"Eon, come back now!" Keith exclaimed, withdrawing the Shiny Eevee. "You were amazing. Your mom and brother are gonna be so proud," he murmured. "Now take a good rest." Then he turned back to the battle- it was just Melittin vs. Gengar now.

"And just like that, this battle has become one-on-one!" Gavin grinned. "Keith's Mega Beedrill is a force to be reckoned with, but Jake and his Gengar are no slouches! This could go either way!"

"That it could," Keith chuckled. "Melittin, Poison Jab!" And the Mega Beedrill, enraged by Taunt, was only too happy to oblige. He took the Sucker Punch, and it was big damage, but he still landed that Poison Jab for all it was worth. Not very effective, but one thing Haze couldn't clear out was the Focus Energy from earlier. "Nice!" Keith grinned as the attack landed. "One more time, Mel! Poison Jab with all you've got!"

Staravia had taken the Z-Move with a high amount of health left, and was by this time hardy and determined enough to take it by himself, pushing Gengar away into the air at the last second. Since the Acid Downpour didn’t originally target her, she got away with just a bit of damage taken. After the poisonous storm, Staravia was on the ground, seemingly knocked out, but it soon showed to not be the case. The Starling Pokémon got up, spurred on by willpower.

After Gengar’s sequence of moves, Mega Beedrill moved in for a Poison Jab—but Staravia came out of nowhere and hit him on the side with Reckless-boosted Double-Edge at the last second, pushing him away! Unfortunately, such an attack launched at full power came at the cost of hefty recoil, which Staravia couldn’t take anymore. He collapsed to the ground for real, unable to battle.

Jake was shocked by Staravia’s resolve. He recalled the Normal/Flying-type, saying, "You were awesome out there! Have a good rest."

Jake turned back to the now single battle. "Let’s do this, Gengar!" he exclaimed. "Use Psychic, full power!"

"Gen...gaaar!" cried Gengar. She released her Psychic power from her eyes, using psychokinesis to stop the Mega Beedrill’s attack. She pushed the Bug/Poison-type away and forcibly into the ground. If Melittin could use another Poison Jab after that, then Gengar would meet it—no, intercept it, with a full-power Sucker Punch fired from her mouth.

(Sorry if I wasn't clear enough. I made a few edits for clarification.)

(It's cool, though if I may, next time you outright disagree with, like, a call the referee makes in a battle we're having, or some other situation concerning something happening with your Pokémon, you could always just let me know and we can talk it out, maybe agree on an edit I could make to my post, rather than showing outright defiance against it in your reply. I'm cool with rolling with it this time, if only because hanging on like that out of sheer willpower is so fitting for something that's meant to look like a Swellow, but just something to note for future reference, OK?)

"Oh, whoa, I stand corrected!" Gavin chuckled as Staravia stubbornly stood up. "And look at that- Double-Edge outta nowhere! Mega Beedrill's gotta be feeling that! Aaaaand... Staravia is unable to battle! For real this time!" he added with a sheepish chuckle. "Damn, though! Colored like a Swellow and just as gutsy as one!"

"Come on, Mel, you got this!" Keith encouraged the Bug/Poison-type. "Poison Jab, finish it!"

Alas, Melittin's attack never landed- he pushed valiantly through the Psychic, but ultimately, type matchups won out, and the Poison Bee Pokémon was plowed into the ground. Undeterred, he tried again, but was met with a Sucker Punch that landed him flat on the ground again, and this time, as a regular Beedrill.

"Beedrill! Is! Unable! To battle!!!" Gavin practically screamed into the microphone, the better to be heard over the roar of the crowd. "Both of Keith's Pokémon are unable to battle, so the winner of this battle and today's Colosseum challenge is Jake Celeste from Pastoria City!!!"

Keith withdrew Melittin, smiling. "You fought wonderfully, Mel," Keith stated. "We'll get 'em next time." Still smiling, he walked towards the center of the battlefield to meet Jake and shake his hand. "It was a good battle," Keith stated. "We might have lost, but it was a lot of fun. I definitely want a rematch someday," he grinned.

~~~~~
As Jake and Keith exited to the lobby, the receptionist smiled at the former. "Congratulations on your victory, Mr. Celeste," she said politely. "In commemoration of your winning here today, please accept this set of Fighting Gems," she added, handing over a trio of brown gemstones.
"Hey," came Gavin's voice as the man himself also exited the colosseum into the lobby. "Holy shit, man," he said to Jake. "I ain't never seen a crowd so worked up like that before. You're something else! You got no idea- you went up against three Trainers that have all won numerous Colosseum challenges here before. Beating Terri, Willa, and Keith- that's no easy feat!"
"Who else did he battle?" Keith asked Gavin.
"Eddie in Round 1," replied Gavin. "I feel like he ought to have used Gigawatt instead of Battery if you ask me, but he put up a respectable fight nonetheless."
"Ah," Keith nodded. "I had kinda been hoping to face him, but I couldn't complain, fought some good Trainers today. Oh- Willa!" he grinned as the Kalosian Ace Trainer entered the lobby from outside, where much of the crowd had already started to disperse.
"I saw the finals," Willa said with a faint smile. "You fought well."
"Thanks," smiled Keith.
"And you," Willa added, turning to Jake. "I will warn you now, I have no intention of losing when next we battle."
"Alright," Keith stated. "I get the feeling all of our Pokémon could use some rest, so what say we all hit up the Pokémon Center?" He asked this not only of Willa, but of Jake as well.
"Certainly," Willa nodded.
"I'll tag along," Gavin added. "Might as well make sure my own team's in good shape."
(Oh, okay. Sorry about that. Yeah, fine with me in the future.)
"Alright, Gengar! We won!" Jake cheered. "It was a great battle, no doubt about it," he agreed with Keith. "And Gengar, I can tell we still have a lot of room for improvement."
After Jake recalled Gengar, the Trainers exited to the lobby, where Jake gratefully accepted the Fighting Gems from the receptionist. "Thanks," he said. "And believe me, I was surprised too," he replied to Gavin. "Seems like my Pokémon had a lot of hidden potential that they didn't show before! If you guys want, I can do some single battle rematches with you guys later today. I'm not in a rush." He grinned. "To the Pokémon Center it is, then!" he accepted.
As everyone walked out of the Colosseum, Jake decided to make some small talk. "Hey Keith, I heard that you had some encounters with Team Rocket in the past," he said. "I met some grunts who tried to capture a Wailord just a few days ago. What do you think as a way to fight against them?"
Gavin grinned as Jake stated he'd be up for rematches later on. "And lemme tell you, I might want a battle with you myself," he stated. "Every Colosseum challenge gets me all fired up for a good Pokémon fight."
As they exited, Jake started talking about how he'd taken on some Team Rocket grunts several days ago. "Team Rocket?!" Keith repeated in disbelief. "Wha... Oh, geez..."
Willa raised an eyebrow. "I thought their boss disbanded them?" she inquired.
"He did," Keith confirmed. "Apparently, it didn't take. Again. I'm starting to think people just keep reforming Team Rocket out of nostalgia or something like that. Oh, geez, Helena's not gonna be pleased to hear this," he added. "But yeah, to answer your question, Jake- by and large, their grunts aren't much to speak of in terms of battling skills. They sometimes like to try and get the advantage in numbers if not in strength. They're really back?" he added exasperatedly. "Man. I gotta fill Vinny in on this."
"Knowing Vinny, he may already know," Willa stated.
"Heh, true," Keith chuckled. "But yeah- Jake, they may not be the best battlers, but they can make up for it with cunning schemes, so you basically gotta be ready for anything. They play dirty."
As they entered the Pokémon Center, Keith led the way up to the counter, where a blue-eyed Banette was floating behind the counter. "I take it the Colosseum challenge just ended?" she smiled. "Who won?"
"This guy, right here," Keith smiled, gesturing to Jake. "Jake, this is Helena, one of my Banette, and my older sister. Helena, this is Jake Celeste.
"A pleasure to meet you," Helena said to Jake, bowing respectfully. "I take it everyone's Pokémon are in need of healing, then?"
"For sure," Keith stated, handing the Ultra Ball and Premier Ball to the Banette. Willa handed over a pair of Ultra Balls and Gavin forked over every ball on his belt.
"Well, that's interesting," Jake replied, as Keith remarked that Team Rocket's old boss disbanded them. "The boss that these grunts were talking about seemed really strange to me. He wanted to build a boat? That doesn't sound right for someone in Team Rocket. Come to think of it," he continued, "the R on their uniforms was blue, not red, and they called themselves Team Aqua Rocket. This might be a new boss."
As the group arrived at the Pokémon Center, Jake saw that a blue-eyed talking Banette filled in the role of Nurse Joy. He waved hi and gave over Staravia and Gengar's Pokéballs. Honestly, he wasn't surprised. After all, Peeves' family could talk. Jake started to wonder why his Gengar couldn't speak human language.
Jake looked around the Pokémon Center. "Ooh, a fountain!" he spotted, giving him an idea. "There's a Stunfisk there. May I release Buizel so he can play in the fountain?" he asked everyone around him.
Cy glanced at Wurmple as the forest began to clear. "I don't know if this is a good idea," he said for the hundredth time that day. "I mean, is it really necessary-" Wurmple gave him a look that said quite clearly, We've been over this. Cy frowned. "Would you quit taking Dracen's side on this? I'm older than him! I shouldn't have to do what he says... " Wurmple motioned ahead of them to say, Too late now. And indeed, as the trees thinned they could see the buildings of Sludge Wave Coast in the distance. The forest fell away behind them as they continued, and soon enough they came up to a Pokémon Center. Cy huffed and thought about turning back again. "I mean, do we really need battle practice?" At that, Wurmple managed to convey don't start this up again with astounding prowess, for a Pokémon that couldn't speak. Cy turned to look at him, miffed. "Why are you so enthusiastic about battling, anyway? Is it just because Dracen said it was a good idea?" Wurmple looked shocked. He began flailing his tiny arms in indignance, and Cy followed suit. Soon they were arguing loudly - well, Cy was - right in the front yard of Sludge Wave Coast.
"A boat?" Keith repeated. "Yeah, you're right, that doesn't sound like Team Rocket as I've known them. Then again, maybe they want to take a more nautical approach to deter Vinny, as he's infiltrated their ranks once before, and he's Fire and Ground..." At Jake's question regarding the fountain, Keith smiled and nodded. "Sure, definitely," he replied. "That there's Rubeus, kindest and most caring Stunfisk you'll ever meet. He helps Helena out here a lot, actually, though make no mistake, he knows his way around a battle, too, when the situation calls for it- what was that?" he added, hearing what appeared to be something of a one-sided argument.
"Coming from outside, from the sound of it," remarked Gavin.
"Yeah, now that you mention it, I do see someone out there," Keith stated, standing up. He walked outside, looked at the man arguing with his Wurmple. '...everything OK out here?" Keith asked.
Jake noticed Keith bringing up someone named Vinny, and upon hearing of his Fire and Ground type, he guessed..."Vinny is a Camerupt, I assume?" he asked Keith.
Upon Keith giving the okay for Jake to let Buizel come out, the young Aura Guardian took out the Cherish Ball and tossed it in the air. After Buizel appeared, the Ball landed back in Jake’s hand.
"Hey, Buizel!" said Jake. "You wanna play in that fountain over there? You haven’t had a chance to relax all day long. I’m pretty sure that white-finned Stunfisk is friendly," he added as he pointed at the fountain, noticing Buizel’s worried look upon seeing Rubeus in the fountain.
"Bui!" Buizel nodded. He ran over and leapt into the fountain with a great splash, greeting the Stunfisk with a friendly smile. After that, Buizel didn’t do much more than relax, just sitting and enjoying the coolness of the constantly moving water.
Suddenly, as Keith and Gavin turned their attention to a sound coming from outside, Jake peeked over the shoulder of the hat-wearing Trainer in the doorway as he asked if everything was okay. Jake was able to see a Trainer arguing in the yard with a Wurmple.
Wurmple was first to notice the approaching Trainer. Cy saw him just as he stopped and asked if everything was OK. Cy took a deep breath.
"Yes, it's just... I'm not very good at this whole Pokémon Trainer thing just yet. Plus, Wurmple thinks he knows everything. You teach him one Psychic-Type move..." The Wurmple in question looked politely offended at this remark. "Oh, I'm Cy, by the way." He stuck his hand out for a handshake. "Nice to meet you, Mr... ?"
"Yeah, that's right," Keith had replied as Jake correctly deduced Vinny's species. "He can sometimes get involved with some, ah, shady dealings, but his intentions are always good. He actually infiltrated Team Rocket's ranks, made them think he was giving them info on me, when in fact he was feeding them just enough useless info to keep them satisfied while giving me some seriously useful advance warnings whenever they were planning something big. Oh, yeah- Vinny can talk, too, I probably should've opened with that," Keith added with a chuckle. "Taught himself, actually, before I even met him."
Rubeus, meanwhile, couldn't help but notice the newcomer, and swam over to the Buizel. "Hello, there," the Stunfisk said politely. "I am Rubeus. Who might you be?"
Outside, the newcomer explained that he wasn't yet very good at being a Trainer and that his Wurmple seemed to think he knew everything. He introduced himself as Cy, offering a handshake before asking Keith's name.
"Masters. Keith Masters," Keith replied, shaking Cy's hand. "Just starting out, then, I'm guessing? Though if that's the case, pretty impressive to have already taught your Wurmple a Psychic attack," he added. "So what brings you out to Sludge Wave Coast, Cy?" he asked.
"Heh, that's pretty cool," Jake had commented as Keith explained about Vinny's involvements with Team Rocket.
"Hi, Rubeus. Just call me Buizel," Jake's Water-type introduced himself. "My Trainer is that one over there—" he pointed—"his name is Jake Celeste, and he and I met Keith a few weeks ago. I've been with Jake for my whole life, and we both have the rare ability to sense and use aura. That's another word for the life force of living things. I think it's pretty cool; how about you? Do you have anything that sets you apart from others of your species?"
As Keith talked a bit with the new Trainer, who introduced himself as Cy, Jake stepped back, not wanting to interrupt. However, he would be ready to chime in once he needed to introduce himself.
Keith introduced himself and guessed that Cy hadn't been a Pokémon Trainer for long. "Yeah, I only got Wurmple recently," Cy admitted. "And technically, my brother taught him Psychic."
Keith then asked Cy why he had come. "I'm, uh," Cy cleared his throat. "Well..."
"I'm here to challenge you to a battle!"
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Buizel," Rubeus nodded. "Aura, you say? I know of it well enough, though I'm afraid I'm not among those able to sense it. I may know of a Bronzor with something resembling that capability, though I can't be completely certain." Then, Buizel asked if Rubeus had anything that set him apart from the rest of his kind. "Well... in some ways I would hope it wouldn't set me apart from ALL the rest of my kind, but definitely from the worst of them. We Stunfisk are, I'm afraid, infamous for being tricksters. For inflicting pain on others and relishing in it," he said with a distasteful look on his face. "And I'm sorry to say I knew one such Stunfisk personally. The worst stereotypes of our kind made flesh. My Trainer's failures to control such an evil being are what led to me electing to join him in the first place, though even though that chapter of our lives is behind us, I've never wanted to leave," he continued with a smile. "Basically, I seek to do good in the world. Not only for the sake of the reputation of my species, but my foremost motive is, of course, helping those in need. Hence, I help out at this Pokémon Center whenever I can. That blue-eyed Banette behind the counter is Keith's older sister, from when she was alive- she runs this Pokémon Center, and also Keith's Musharna helps out as well. I apologize if I'm rambling," he added.
~~~~~

Keith blinked in surprise at Cy's sudden challenge. Once he'd had a moment to process this, however, he grinned. "You're on, then," he stated. "I just need to wait until my Pokémon are healed-"

"Right here," Helena chimed in, floating out to greet them, handing everyone back their Poké Balls.

"Heh. Impeccable timing, Helena," Keith chuckled. "Thanks, Helena. Alright, then," he added, turning back to Cy. "Like I said, I accept. Follow me." And he walked off towards the large battlefield in the Shadow Clearing. Willa and Gavin followed as well, the latter wordlessly gesturing for Jake to come with.

Once they reached there, Keith stood at one end of the battlefield, turning to Gavin. "Gav, you mind refereeing?" he asked.

"Shit, man, no problem," Gavin replied, walking off to the side.

"All set when you are, Cy," Keith stated. "How many Pokémon will we each use?"

"Nah, it's no problem," Buizel replied. "And...that's quite a story. Nice to know you're not a troublesome Stunfisk like some others are." He nodded, silent as he processed Rubeus's words.

Just then, Keith, Willa, and Gavin filed out the door after Cy, having received back their Pokéballs. Jake, who had gotten his Pokéballs back as well, nodded and quickly followed, waving for Buizel to follow as well.

"Oh, I've got to go, sorry I couldn't stay longer," Buizel said hastily, sitting up and leaping out of the fountain. "It's been nice chatting with you, Rubeus. See you later!" He gave a friendly wave before scampering after Jake.

Before long, everyone arrived at the battlefield in the Shadow Clearing. Jake and Buizel made their way to the side opposite Gavin's side and sat on the grass a few feet back.

"Let's see how this battle will go!" Jake suggested to his Pokémon partner. "We might learn a thing or two."

Buizel nodded in agreement. Maybe he could learn some battling strategy! Who knows what these two Trainers might use in this battle.

(Hey MM, if you have something else in mind for Jake instead of having him watch the battle, feel free to mention that.)

Keith accepted almost immediately. Cy followed him to a battlefield along with several others, who took up positions around it. One became the referee. Keith asked how many Pokémon they would use. Cy took a deep breath, steadying himself, before answering.
"I think we should use three Pokémon each. And I'm as ready as I'll ever be!"

Keith grinned as Cy stated he was ready. "Then let's get this party started!" he declared. As he spoke, he plucked a Net Ball off his belt and clicked the button to enlarge it.

"OK, then! Three-on-three Pokémon fight between Keith and Cy!" Gavin declared. "And Jake, after this, I'mma want a battle with you, alright?" he added with a grin. "But anyway- let the battle begin!" he added, turning his attention back to the battlefield.

"You're up first- Noxie, let's go!" Keith declared, throwing the Net Ball, from which emerged a peculiar Mightyena, the coloration of her fur bringing to mind ice and snow. Noxie barked confidently, ready to battle anything Cy would send out.

Meanwhile, a Banette appeared out of thin air right next to Jake, with no warning whatsoever, and judging by the eyes, this wasn't Helena. The Banette was watching the battle with interest.

After everything was set for the battle to begin, Gavin made the call, and added that he'd like to battle Jake after this.

"Sure thing," Jake replied, giving a thumbs-up.

Suddenly, Buizel tensed up, eliciting a look from Jake. "Everything okay—" he started to ask, but before he could finish, a Banette appeared next to them, interested in the battle.

Jake nodded at Buizel, mouthing Oh, before turning to the Banette. It had the regular red eyes, which Jake took to mean that this Banette wasn't Helena. But of course—Jake had heard that Keith owned two Banette. This one must be the one named Myrtle.

The Aura Guardian-in-training nodded to acknowledge the Marionette Pokémon's presence, and turned back to the battle expectantly. Buizel nodded at Myrtle, too, before also turning his attention to the battle that was about to unfold.

The battle had begun! Keith sent out a Mightyena with snowy coloring. Cy thought for a moment before taking a Cherish Ball and tossing it out. "Jeffrey, come on out!" The Buizel hit the battlefield and looked across at the Mightyena. "Let's open with Growl!" Jeffrey let out a menacing growl,which would lower Noxie's attack power.
