Sweeney taps his helmet, trying to gather his thoughts. No matter what he does, the Bartender can't seem to make heads of tails of their position - which worried him significantly. That meant that someone - or something - was messing with him in a way that he was struggling to understand, attacking his perception and awareness. More worryingly, it was occurring remotely. If the culprit was near, he had no doubt that one of his Pokemon would have cottoned on and warned him. Itsy especially was particularly sensitive to potential danger, given the meandering innocent naivety of his sister. Shrugging his shoulders in temporary defeat, the trainer peers as best he can along the available routes. No matter how much he squinted, the paths simply veered off awkwardly and left him without any real information. They'd have to tread them to discover what lay beyond.

Turning to his Pokemon, the Bartender put the decision to a vote. Itsy immediately scuttled towards the north, the Spinarak adamant in his choice, punctuating his certainty with determined clacks of his pincers. Branch meanwhile leaned to the west. With the deciding vote going to Bitsy, the Caterpie quickly shuffled over to join her brother. At this point, Sweeney realised his mistake. Bitsy would always side with Itsy, meaning the Spinarak would have de facto control of their path. With a slumped stature and a chuckle from Branch, Sweeney indicated for Itsy to lead the way, much to the amusement of Bitsy, with both Bug types preparing to mark the shrubbery with String Shot.

D- Did that statue just move? Weird... Well, if this is anything like that video game I played last year, guess we'd better follow the direction the sword is pointing and see where it leads to... Going North East.

Ray stopped to examine the statue, hoping he could take any clues. Zoroark, however, was more practical. Pointing to a group of travelers up ahead, he encouraged Ray to give chase.

"You're not wrong... if we keep our distance, we can see what they do and what happens to them. And if there's any danger up ahead, well... they'll take the brunt of it and we can turn back."

Zoroark grinned in agreement.

"North East it is. But let's move carefully."

But could it be that the statue moved? It's pointing South... not North East. Hm... we'll find out soon.

Cy felt a jolt as he entered the maze, an instant fog that shot through his mind and completely disoriented him.

"Gah-" He glanced around, wondering why his senses felt off. "Wurmple... What did that?" Wurmple's eyes lit up, shining blue with Psychic energy. He tried to lift the orientation-clouding fog from Cy's mind first, and failing that, attempted to trace it back to its source. He was less practiced at the more mental aspects of his Psychic powers, but he thought he could trace the thread of the fog... until the thread was deliberately cut, and Wurmple forcibly driven out of the mental world. He flinched and tried again, his eyes stuttering between yellow and blue, but he could no longer access either power - telekinesis or mental sight.

I cannot use Psychic anymore...? Only a Ghost, Dark, or other Psychic could do that. He noticed Cy looking at him with concern. He shook his head to confirm that he couldn't use Psychic, and that he didn't have any information on whatever force had suppressed Cy's sense of direction. Cy sighed and eyed the paths ahead. "I guess we just pick one at random then..." He looked around them again and started heading North. Wurmple would've shrugged, but he didn't have shoulders.

Emp felt a tinge of regret as his old friend disappeared into the shrubbery, alongside another friend he hadn’t encountered in a long while. They could have built quite the maze busting troop if they had all stuck together – alas, as with life he would carve his own way through this labyrinth. It was the sort of horror movie logic that got people killed, but before he knew it he was swallowed in darkness again as his thinning company beared North. Emp followed the large, wayward footsteps of the abomination with growing curiousity, racking his brain trying to discern what kind of Pokemon it was supposed to be. He hadn’t seen Ventress that spooked in a while, perhaps the answer to his questions were rattling inside her Mesozoic mind. The trail soon enough led them to the monster itself, its trainer close by deliberating on their next direction. Ventress emitted another hiss as she shuffled by, tentacles flaring in a sort of intimidation tact.

The latest clearing was landmarked by a disused fountain, its waters dark and turbid. Loom emitted a curious coo as she peered into her luminous pink reflection, the spores falling from her cap rippling against its motionless surface and muddling her reflection. The sea dweller among their ranks gave the putrefied pool a test with her tentacles, lowering her head for a drink much to Emp’s concern – they better keep moving. He was unsure how far from the centre they were now, or if they had already passed it, but decided they would continue North for a while longer.

Moving along the path as it winds erratically, Sweeney is struck with a distinct sense of foreboding. This feeling is only compounded as the group find themselves in an open clearing, dominated by a gnarled and twisted tree. The trunk bears deep scars, the blackened bark emanating a sinister vibe. The very air feels denser here, thickened by the intense presence of the tree. Branch frowns, clearly perturbed by the haggard wood. Despite this overwhelming repulsion, there was a morbid curiosity, an irresistibly instinctive urge to be drawn in. For a moment it is all Sweeney can do to prevent himself from investigating further - before the mesmerising spell is broken by a sharp pain radiating from his ankle. Flinching back, brought crashing to his senses, the Bartender realises that Itsy had given him a swift pinch, the Spinarak openly sharing his trainer's misgivings. Crouching to rub the afflicted spot, Sweeney nods his gratitude - there was no telling what may have occurred had he indulged the desires seizing control of him.

With this resolved, Itsy and Bitsy saunters towards the branching paths, pouring over them. Checking the eastern path first, the pair shudder intensely. While unable to quite pinpoint what it was, something about it almost warded them away, their instincts screaming against taking that option. Branch similarly voices concerns regarding that particular route, and so attentions turn to the west. After a few moments deliberation, each Pokemon seems relatively comfortable with this outcome, this Itsy jubilantly clacking his mandibles. Confident in his Pokemon's choice, Sweeney heads westerly.

Cy shivered as he looked at the tree. As cliche as it sounded, he felt as though its branches were reaching for him like skeletal claws. Wurmple pondered the tree, wondering if it could be a disguised Trevenant or some similar spook. He kept one eye on it as Cy debated their next choice of direction. He thought he saw a branch reach closer as Cy began heading West, but when he gave it a second glance it hadn't moved.

Trick of the light...?

Trudging in the direction of the North East path with just his corvid companion once again, it wasn't long before Zak realised that the pair weren't alone and had been joined by another set of Pokémon trainers traversing the strange locale. As fate would have it, one of them turned out to be another friend of his from his former life in Fizzytopia, Jess, flanked by a host of her furriest companions.

"Long time no see, Jess." The man tried not to surprise his old friend as he approached the other travellers but found himself tapping her on the shoulder as he spoke out of habit, "Does Emp know you're here? I feel like I've stepped into a time machine, seeing ghosts of the past in the Haunted Mansion."

The Darkness Pokémon had been quite settled upon his trainer's head, even starting to doze slightly before Zak had approached their fellow maze runner. Spotting the Linoone and friends, he ruffled his feathers before leaping from his spot to join the trio on the ground to make his introductions. Further along the path they had chosen, another split was barely visible through a strange impending fog that clung thick to the air: one way heading off to the North and another towards the South. With his Murkrow getting acquainted with Jess' Pokémon, Zak decided to take the lead and make the next decision.

"I'm going to head towards the North if you guys wanna join us? If not, give me a call if you end up in another sticky situation - I remember you not having the best time the last time you were here!"

Connor, Emi, sixdragons: You head west from the spooky tree in what appears to be a very short walk before coming across another clearing…

ChrisClark13, King Ghidorah: You walk up the trail north of the armored statue. It is a straight shot for the most part, with a short bend to the east followed by an immediate corner to the west, and then resumes its north-south track. Up ahead is another clearing…

Emp: As you passed by the fountain and made your way towards an exit, a small pair of tentacles rose out of the water. Whatever they belonged to rapidly shot out of the fountain and a blur of disorienting lights muddled your head as things became Topsy-Turvy. Without realizing it, you began to embark down the West path instead…

Emp: Confused as to how you ended up going this way, you embarked down the western path, which was an abrupt northern turn and an immediate dead end. You head back into the fountain area, frustrated as a shrill laugh bubbled out of the depths of the murky water.

Pearl’s Perap: You head north at the fork in the road, becoming increasingly disoriented through the thick of the haze. Before you knew it, you were separated from your travel group as you rounded a corner. Despite having ventured down a path with no additional options, you began to feel increasingly lost the deeper you went. However, you kept pushing forward as if something were beckoning you forward. It looked like you were approaching a dead end up ahead, but close to the edge of the wall there was something bright that stood out in the darkness. The creature called out to you, as if it seemed to know you…

"They're slowing their pace, damnit. At this rate we'll have to join them," muttered Ray under his breath. Turning to Zoroark, he explained. "Your Illusion is flawless, but I still don't want to take my chance in large gatherings. If any of them are undercover cops and are onto us, too much proximity is the last thing we want. If they kept up their bloody pace they'd be a lot more useful, but as it stands... Let's go South here."

Cy stared up at the statue, eyes following the point of its sword to the North. He shuddered a little, then took a breath. This maze was getting creepier all the time.

"Well, obviously we don't go that way." He spun resolutely and began to head South immediately. Wurmple kept his eye on the statue as they started walking away. He caught a flash of movement in the maze vines and whipped his head around, looking away from the statue for the first time, and suddenly heard a faint scraaaaape and whipped back around to look at the statue again. Had it always been looking in their direction? Was its sword's hilt glowing blue, or was it just moonlight reflecting off the stone?

I'm not so sure this experiment should go on much longer...

Xander was relieved when they came upon the clearing, an old fountain was the only thing of note, but that was exactly what he needed! He'd worked up a real sweat running through the maze, he really needed a drink. Unfortunately, the water was far from clear, there was no way he could drink that without potentially making himself sick. Thankfully Dewpider was happy to help out, holding up a little water bubble for his trainer to drink. "Thanks Dewpider, Pichu might want one as well", Xander swallowed the water bubble as the bell spider passed one down to Pichu as well. While they'd been distracted, more people had started rocking up. People seemed to be moving through the maze much easier now, it was almost like they were following them.....

"Lazy bastards", Xander murmured under his breath. Here he was, doing all the hard work scouting out the maze and they were just riding on his coat tails. One of the other trainers returned to the clearing via the West path, mumbling something about a dead end and being disorientated by something in the fountain. "Hmmm", Xander pondered as Dracovish growled at one of the trainers Pokemon, a Cradily. "So he tried to go North and got sent West? What if we try to go East? If we get disorientated, it might send us another way but I doubt it'll send us West again." The one plus side to having so many people in the maze now was that it wasn't just him and his Pokemon making all the wrong moves. They had to pay attention to the mistakes of others.

A rather unremarkable clearing that’s sole feature is an old fountain. The water jets have long since ceased their functioning, but the basin is still filled with a murky water. Your options are North, East, West, or South back the way you came.
Go West, young meowth.

As the Trainer and his Pokémon continued into the maze, the sky almost seemed to darken. After only a minute or two, Staravia gave a squawk of confusion.

Jake turned around. "Everything okay, Staravia?"

"My senses are all muddled, like I was spun around until I was dizzy," the Normal/Flying-type complained, settling down on the ground.

"How come the rest of us don't feel that way?" Buizel asked.

The Aura Guardian thought a moment. "That feeling of disorientation might be from ghostly magic of some sort," he speculated. "The rest of us, we have power over aura, which protects us from the mental fog. But never fear, my right hand remains on this wall here!" He patted the right wall of the maze.

Hold on! Look, an intersection! Lucario suddenly exclaimed. He bent low to the ground and scanned it, before pointing to each of the three paths. There are footprints; someone must have already gone east and west! What's more, there are return footprints. My aura-sensing abilities also tell me from the other maze runners that both of these ways lead to a dead end. Following the right hand trick just drags this out. No point in that, I wouldn't think.

Buizel walked over to the footprints, while Staravia hopped behind him. The Sea Weasel Pokémon sniffed the ground, before standing back up and nodding. "I smell a dead end—two, actually," he agreed plainly. "On the contrary, I don't see nor smell any return footprints on the north route."

The Trainer looked at the last Pokémon he had out. "What do you think, Staravia?" asked Jake.

The Starling Pokémon, having been Roosting, just shrugged, as if to say, "Don't ask me."

After looking back and forth between his Buizel and Lucario, the young Aura Guardian let out a sigh. "All right, you win. Let's head north and see where that takes us." Jake took his right hand off the wall it was on, jogged past the intersection and put his right hand on that wall, before waving the rest of his Pokémon along and continuing through the Maze of Shrubbery.

Armored Statue: (Connor, Emi, sixdragons)
You come across a rather large clearing that is highlighted by a prominent statue in the middle of a soldier with a shield in one hand and a sword in the other. Your options are South, West, North, North East, or East in the direction of the spooky tree. The sword seems to be pointing towards the north…
Leaving the forlorn tree behind gratefully, the group throws themselves to the mercy of the twisting maze. Well, that was what they expected. This time they found themselves on a much more tame stroll, barely managing to fall into a defined rhythm before they stumble across a new clearing. This one was dominated by the visage of a lumbering armoured statue, kitted out with a rough hewn sword and shield. Itsy is immediately captivated, the curious Spinarak rushing towards the stonework and scaling the side with ease, skittering left and right in an attempt to investigate every nook and cranny, much to the immediate chagrin of Branch. The maternal Oddish stomps over with authority rather than anger, making a few pointed gestures and insisting the Spinarak disembark lest he inevitably hurts himself. One Marco was enough to handle, so this had to be nipped in the bud quick and proper.

With a huffy look on his face, Itsy gingerly retreats to the soundtrack of stifled chuckles from Bitsy, the Caterpie delighting in the scolding being dished out at her brother. Sweeney watched the scene unfold with silent bemusement, finding both solace and respect in the way Branch was handily taming the unruly tendencies of the youngster. Still, they had a decision to make, and again Itsy thrusts himself into the limelight. Scoping out the possible routes, the spider brashly insist that they continue west - and this time, to everyone's surprise, Bitsy fights back. The stature was pointing north, after all, so surely they should follow that? As the two siblings begin to bicker, Branch is called upon to settle the debate.

This time they would head West, but next time Bitsy would be the one to choose their path.
