When people asked comic artist Abby Howard what the deal was with character Robert in her comic The Last Halloween, she answered that he was a voodoo Haitian doll. (Aside: some fans criticized that Haiti doesn't have a history of practicing voodoo. She apologized for this oversight.) At the time, I figured that she just invented Robert herself, based on the popular horror trope of animated dolls.
But while reading about the Okiku Doll, a famous doll in Japan said to have hair that keeps on growing, I came upon this surprising discovery: Robert the Doll, a doll from Key West said to be possessed by evil spirits. Huh. How 'bout that. Seems like it would be too crazy of a coincidence to be a coincidence. Abby's Robert has got to be inspired by (if not downright meant to actually be) the Robert from the occult fandom.

The criticizing fans may be wrong, and the artist right: Haiti does have some groups that still practice voodoo today. I happened upon this watching a video on the cultures of both countries on Hispanola.

The original complaints might have been steeped in technicalities, iirc. See: Haiti has "vodou" but not "voodoo". Though that's not what I remember the fans saying. What I remember them saying was something like, "Voodoo is Creole. {word I am forgetting} is Haitian." Something like that. I don't recall "vodou" entering the conversation, but meh, that's Wikipedia suggests is the name of Haiti's practice, so ...

We haven't had some SMBC here in a while. There have been some great ones since the last time any were shared, but I'll only be linking a small handful from where I just picked up reading again.
2014/05/24 comic about history teacher 2014/05/27 comic about willingness to accept invasions of privacy 2014/05/28 comic about quantum mechanics and Peter Pan 2014/05/29 comic about intellectual property law 2014/06/10 comic about science fair 2014/06/12 comic about death Tastes vary and there were some others in there which even in my own opinion were good; so, by all means if there's one I skipped in the interval between May 24 and today, feel free to share it yourself. But the ones above represent this editor's picks, I guess you could say.

The latest Subnormality is absolutely gut-wrenchingly beautiful. I swear, the author HAS to either be a space alien or from some perfect crystal spires and togas future. Nobody can possibly have that much insight and understanding and sensitivity.

My deeper interpretation would be: the outcome is ironic. Dreamcatchers would normally prove popular, amongst whites, with hippies / social liberals. The boy's bedroom decorations and interest in picking up guitar also suggest a hippie / a social liberal. Yet use of the dreamcatcher has transformed the boy into a stereotypical Young Republican. So the comic is exploring the irony of an item normally bought by hippies killing the hippie inside. Not sure if either interpretation is correct, but there you go.

I love Subnormality. Sometimes the author loses me a little bit halfway through because she rambles on and on and never finishes her sentences, and they don't really often end because the character desperately needs to get all their thoughts out at once.
But it's always nice for a good think.

Has this been linked yet?
Amazing little short story. Good binge read if you have a few hours to do so. The comic is drawing to a close, so there's this nice period where you don't have to wait long for the thing to end but you still appreciate a good thing while it's happening. It's got a violent female lead, lots of jokes, and a very rapidly paced plot line; it can be difficult to realize sometimes how fast the plot's advancing. Tons of fun. Definitely recommend. Comments not as spoilery as I'd thought. Carry on.

While doing a reread of Level 30 Psychiatry (linked earlier in the thread), I found this little gem of a webcomic. It's a lot like Calvin and Hobbes, but...well, dive in for yourself, its the one way to enjoy it.

I unbookmarked it when he spent two weeks poorly defending himself against sexual harassment accusations and not updating the comic. Is it actually worth looking at now?

Well I mean I enjoyed the update and it was a series of pretty good comics in my opinion. No it's not the finish to the arc...but the comic isn't a race and I don't really care too much if arcs are finished. The tension is the fun part, ya know?
