Looser is my #1 pet peeve. I don't even understand how people think that's correct. They could at least spell it with a z, then it would look the way it sounds!

Reminded by a staff post of one of mine: people confusing "i.e." for "e.g." and vice versa. When you want to provide an incomplete list of examples, use e.g. When you want to say "that is to say," use i.e. It's not rocket science. But so, so many people misuse these two abbreviations.

Never mind the word order: the spellcheck generation is so fucked if they can't even tell "write" apart from "right".

The latest in the illiteracy of modern youth: "the jubilee on her face." I think you mean jubilation, son. There are no monarchs here. No whiny mutants either.

At least this one tried though. And at least he can spell.

Apparent native English speaker spells Batman, King Kong, Mario, and the Smurfs all correctly ... only to call King Arthur "Author." This is what happens when your exposure to Arthurian legend is exclusive to British visual media, I suppose, and you mistake English pronunciation of "Arthur" for "Author." On the one hand, facepalmingly ignorant; on the other hand, a little cute and fascinating.

Pretty sure that the Namco fighting game series "Soul Calibur" has caused an entire generation of kids to spell "caliber" that way.

I spelled it that way so our American friends would know what I was talking about.

... Except for Doppleganger, who rightfully uses the Queen's English.

Why can people not understand that you say, "Bare with me." and not, "Bear with me." Unless there is a large furry creature that growls loudly and has big teeth and claws sitting next to you, you don't say "Bear with me."

Are you sure about that one? I always thought "bear" referred to "hold", like "to bear a load".

"To bare" something is to make it obvious or reveal it. Bare by itself doesn't mean anything (as a verb). Bear is the correct word.

One of the worst pickup lines I've ever heard is "Please bear my child."

That isn't exactly a "spelling, grammar, or writing error" but it nevertheless feels like the wrong approach to romance. When someone drops a pick-up line, their thoughts generally trend toward ploughing or being ploughed. The end-result of that seed germination, often viewed as an unpleasant and unfortunate byproduct of the act of tilling the soil, is probably something that should be kept out of mind.

It's like saying, "Please marry me...I want to experience divorce".

Awful!

Sure but a lot of people I know say "I want their babies" to indicate that they fancy someone. So it seems less weird to me.

Just saw someone write, "Has anyone notisd before?"

Notisd.

Notisd.

Just ... woooow. This is the sort of spelling I'd expect from a 5-year old. And given it was a Let's Play video on YouTube, maybe that is the case. But if he's not and he's a teen or older, then my God.

"Patients is a fur chew" was a legitimate pun made in a Pearls Before Swine strip. Granted the setup was absurd (as are many strips of the particular style it followed), but it actually happened.

But that wasn't a pun. Hark. I am killed.
