ADV responds to my letter.
A month ago I sent a request to ADV Films to use the prologue sequence of Gurren-Lagann (the first and last time we see Simon Garlock) in a comparison picture with Captain Harlock: Arcadia of my Youth Endless Orbit SSX's OP. The former is a homage to the latter, the scene is very similar and equally brick-shatting. The clip in question I was using is rather low quality, short (less than a minute) and was to be used for Wikipedia educational purposes only. I even pitched the clip as promoting awareness of Gurren-Lagann.
ADV denied me access to the clip. At first I was annoyed (a long delay, just for a rejection?) but I noticed something a bit interest in the response: "ADV cannot grant the rights for the use of this Gurren Lagann clip". Not cannot instead of will not and shall not. Does this mean Gainax's contract with ADV prevents them from allowing proliferation beyond their controlled venues (i.e., those horrible streamed subs?) - I think this little bit of information is more interesting than the rejection letter. But yeah, in the event I'm over-analyzing it's still irritating to see ADV so up-tight about something shorter than their trailers. I wasn't the one who spread retard on a sandwich and pissed off a lot of people with those horrible trailers.

Re: ADV responds to my letter.
An interesting note to have made, but my first impression lies with your second thoughts: "maybe I'm reading into this." Yes, it is important in mastering Legalese to pay attention to the choice of words in these sorts of letters, and yes, "cannot" is different from "can but will not." However, "cannot" is often used in English to mean "will not," and you know this full well. Think of all the times people make a request of others, and the response is "I can't possibly do that!" Of course they can -- it's that they don't want to.
