So it's not a new one, but I thought I'd post this SMBC because it's my absolute favourite and I've just ordered a poster version;

Spoiler: show

Wienersmith is so strange, constantly fluctuating between secular sermons both motivational and demotivational and being hilarious.

Today's SMBC reminded me greatly of a particular subset of discussions in FB over the past few months.

Spoiler: show

As far as the FB connection goes, sadly I am the economist. orz

Wow, it sure has been a long time since I've plugged a Penny Arcade comic! Maybe because they're no longer the fun video game comic we all used to know and love but are instead a hodgepodge of Gabe's Art Projects and Tycho and Gabe's Musings on Life as Adults In Their Mid-30s. Now, admittedly, there's been a lot of webcomics that are plunging their toes into religion these days, so far be it from me to say I want to see PA do this more often, but that stated, today's comic is gold, and a great poke at militant religious extremism in general.

Well, in Dead Space, the future Earth has been kind of taken over by a cult which worships an alien artifacts that brings the dead back as abominations. I don't think they were making fun of religious extremism but rather the fact that it's ridiculous that someone would stay in their religion when their friend's torso has become an undead giant vicious tentacle monster. I mean, DO YOU NOT SEE THE MONSTER STANDING NEXT TO YOU?

The whole religious angle in Dead Space was kind of a spoof on Scientology (called Unitology) where people had bad things happen to them because of the cult and they kind of ignored it.

Oh, I quite realize. But I'm saying, the comic applies well to that topic. Just as you wouldn't remain in a cult which plans to offer your body to an alien parasite, so too would you not remain in a religious group or organization which preached goodwill and honor yet asked you to fund killing of civilian children, to murder your own wife and daughters should your wife look at another man, etc.

I did say "militant religious extremists in general," and now you're restating very nearly that same phrase while dropping the "religious" from it. But this comic isn't about non-religious militant extremists: it's patently about a guy who has sided with the body-parasitizing aliens over siding with humans who value their humanity and says he has done so for religious reasons. So when you say that I shouldn't be narrowing the focus down to just religious militant extremism when saying "this pokes fun at militant religious extremism in general", I don't think that's fair. Because "{this topic}" cannot be filled in by any of the following and still be 100% relevant to the comic at hand:
- paranoid militant extremism (e.g. the guy who has 40 grenade launchers, a bazooka, a dozen semi-automatics, and so on stashed away in his 800 sq.ft. apartment)
- racial militant extremism
- other forms of militant extremism which do not arise as a result of a religious belief / belief about the proper way to live one's life

The comic isn't about the one guy being a militant extremist, but about him having become a militant extremist because of his religion, a religion which asks him to give up his life for beings whose generosity towards humanity is questionable.

On a side note, I would totally get the new SMBC book if 1) I paid for things I could see for free and 2) it wasn't filled with the best and worst SMBC comics in an equal mix.

I've been clicking the random button on SMBC a bit and found my emotions expressed clearly.

For those of you who really like Reddit, I noticed an announcement by Mike Krahulik ("Gabe" of Penny-Arcade) on the PA main website that he would be doing a Reddit AMA at around 4:30pm Eastern, 1:30pm Pacific (his local time). That's in about two hours. So if you want to check it out while it's happening live, you can; and if you have questions you want to ask him, you can do that too. I don't do Reddit and don't have any burning questions for Mike so I'll probably sit it out, but just thought I'd pass the word along all the same. Enjoy!

So I stopped reading Ctl+Alt+Del some time ago. It was before he rebooted the whole thing, but at least a year after his blogs started getting so pretentious and long that you stopped caring. I did see the whole 'end' thing, and it reaffirmed my belief that he's sucked balls for some time now, but I suppose I could be wrong.

Is it worth be catching up on post reboot stuff?

I don't think so. Just pick up some new webcomics unless you have to read it all. I didn't even know there was a reboot. I quit after the miscarriage.

That's a shame, you miss the great part leading up to their marriage where he breaks down a bit and then pulls together. But then you do miss the rest of their relationship. which sucks balls.

I don't consider it a shame cause I stopped caring about the comic, it's characters, the artist, etc. I picked up a bunch of other comics that don't shit themselves with whiplash direction.

Fair.

I've just started on this. Tone Deaf Comics, about music and high school bands, and I suspect anyone who has never been a band geek will not get much of it. The recent stuff looks pretty funny, but I'm starting from the back of the archives and it's less good.

Well, if you know Hamlet it is, anyway.

The bit with the Turing test kills me. XD It's so true. So, so true.

The part with the Polaroid photos is also priceless.

Does it make me a pedant that I dislike that comic because the last panel is wrong?
