I need a paint program to handle .pngs
Back in 2001, off Kazaa, I downloaded Paint Shop Pro 7 and it's been my image editing war-horse since. But it fails spectacularly at handling the more advanced type of .png. Most modern .pngs appear in PSP as black screens, and for .pngs that have that kind of fuzzy transparent look around the edges, PSP has to flatten them.
I need some kind of paint program that will allow me to handle these .pngs, I want to do icon editing for my mobile and it's too hard to get around PSP's limitations. Ideally, I want a free program. In this day and age I'm too chicken to pirate something like I would have 7 years ago. Let alone malware, there are other reasons to be shy of torrents. GIMP is what I have already and it's too hard to use. I want something easy-ish like PSP that could handle the higher-end PNGs. Suggestions?

FireAlpaca might be able to help you, but if it has to be a mobile program I've got nothing.

I'll look into it, thanks!
Doesn't have to be mobile. I do all my shop work on my PC.

There's also a (old) Photoshop version that is completely free and legal to download, and can handle .png files well. All you need is to make a (free) Adobe account:
