Honestly, you didn't expect too much to happen, but it could be a good learning experience for the both of them. Maybe? At this point it felt like all creativity had left the building and all that was left was awkward shame.

The Smeargle could sense Pena's discomfort, and created a little space. It seemed happy by your positivish critique, but the Tyrogue's attitude brought it back towards its more depressed mood. Man, this was awkward. But wasn't that most of life? Maybe this too could be called art. Then again, it could easily just be called angst. No, this was definitely angst.

After awhile, the two Pokemon started to paint again. This time the Smeargle tried to simply do brushwork. Key word tried. All you could see were green scribbles. Man, what was with this Smeargle and green? Most of them could use their tail to create a variety of colors. You watched, and saw green. And more green. And even more green. At this point there was enough green to make a grassland envious. The Smeargle was done, and then pointed at the green blob and then pointed to itself. Was this... block of color a self portrait? Um, okay. The last thing you needed was two fragile Pokemon on your hands.

What do you do?

Tate looked between the expanse of green and the Smeargle. The species were common in Johto, from wence Tate hailed, and their territorial markings could be seen all over trees, rocks, and even buildings, especially in the townships surrounding the Ruins of Alph. They were, of course, beasts and it wasn't really fair to expect impeccable art out of them, but usually whatever they painted looked like something. Wanting to be polite, Tate tried to smile, but it honestly looked more like a grimace.

"That's... interesting," Tate offered, very slowly. "Is it... cubism?"

Pena looked up from his work -- a vague approximation of a Hoppip in red -- and cocked his head at the very, very green blob. It was not good. His was not good either, but the Smeargle's was definitely, definitely not good. He thought he could kind of see what the Painter Pokémon was trying to do though... maybe? At any rate, Smeargle didn't seem like much of a threat, which put Pena at ease somewhat, at least enough to take matters into his own hands. Rooting through the spray paint brought by his trainer, he eventually produced a dark green can, chosen so that it would both match and stand out against the green hues which the Smeargle seemed so fond of. Nudging the other Pokémon away, he oriented the can in his own small hands, and after struggling a moment, began to trace the outer edge of the blob -- and whatever definitive lines he could find in the mess -- with the darker paint, hoping some contrast might help make the blob into something less blob-like.

"You might try using more than one color," Tate suggested, watching Pena assault the Smeargle's artwork with his own attempt at clarity. "Like Pena is doing. Two different shades, right? Makes it 'pop'."

Finished with his work, Pena stepped back to study it, hoping to have brought some form to the otherwise formless chaos.

: After the unexpected but fortunate reunion with Chespin, as well as some key revelations regarding Amanda, you take a couple of moments to discuss the happenings between you and the Vanguard, as well as how you ended up down here, all while the grass pokemon listens intently, poking at the tablet. At the mention of the trapdoor and the physical methods of interrogation, it growls and shakes its head, Meowth on hand to translate that they always knew there was a bit of bad blood in the group and their methods. Regarding the Rattata incident, the Chespin lets out a small chuckle, noting that swarms of Rattata were a common problem in the early days following the fall of the council, but it is the underground city comment that causes the starter to pause in their steps.

"Huh?" the woman turns, wondering why the group stopped, and as Chespin looks at the tablet, shifting hand ferociously as though in search, it stops before showing you an image of the very same undercity, with some interesting information. Apparently in the old days before Goldenridge City was built, numerous travellers would venture there to match wits with an ancient and venerable pokemon who resided within, and those successful would be rewarded with rare and valuable trinkets, and as the Spiky Nut pokemon muses, Amanda voices the very notion you had.

"Y...you don't think that Claydol's the ancient pokemon? I mean...they are old pokemon, b-b-but why would it act like that...?"

Chespin's brow furrows at the possibility, and they make a note of it in the tablet before continuing, showing genuine concern at the news that Marvolo is in need of professional care, and as you finish, it nods its thanks as your group comes across a split in the path, and Chespin's eyes light up as you follow its gaze to the roof, and some familiar bulbs. Amanda hesitates, but through tablet Chespin reassures her that this time she'll be treated fairly, throwing in that they'd bloody some noses if the need came to be. As you approach, you feel a chill on your shoulder, and turning head find that Meowth's gone pale, and is trembling nervously.

"What's wrong?" Amanda asks, and as Meowth responds, you feel a shiver go down your spine.

"I smell blood."

Taking a sniff instinctively, you detect a slight metallic odour, and as Chespin takes charge, they rush ahead of you, as you call out to them. Pursuing, you turn a few corners, finding yourself in familiar corridors, before spotting the grass type standing outside the entrance to the Vanguard base, tablet on the floor as they stand there, mortified. With Amanda behind you, you approach and peer into the doorway, to find what is without a doubt Bryan, the man from before who had got physical...or a sizable chunk of him, at least.

The stench of death hits you like a wave as the grim sight lies before you: something's happened, and the Vanguard, from what you can see, have been massacred, violently torn apart. Dare you investigate this bloodbath for clues on what happened, and how will you deal with the situation?
Chespin listened as Keith explained what had been happening, agreeing with his distaste for the more physical means of interrogation that had been going on, and explaining that Rattata swarms were a common problem ever since things started going downhill. However, at the mention of the underground city, Chespin stopped in its tracks. Confused at this, Keith stopped as well, as did Amanda. Chespin, as it turns out, was furiously working its tablet, seeming to search for something. And it seemed to find it, too- it showed Keith an image of that same underground city, but it also included a fair amount of interesting information. "Huh," Keith murmured, reading the information Chespin had pulled up- people would apparently travel there in the past to face off against a powerful ancient Pokémon, with rare and valuable trinkets being rewarded to those who emerged successful. At this, the group all seemed to come to the same conclusion- Claydol could very well be that same Pokémon.

"Well, its body is studded with Z-Crystals," said Keith in response to Amanda's words. "And Z-Crystals- those are about as rare and valuable as it gets. But yeah... why would Claydol be acting that way? It's almost as if it just hates everyone and everything..."

Chespin continued to listen, showing concern at Marvolo's present condition, and soon they came across some very familiar-looking light bulbs- they must be getting closer to the vanguard! Amanda was understandably nervous, but Chespin was quick to reassure her that she'd be treated fairly.

And then Keith noticed how pale Meowth had gone. "...I smell blood," he trembled in response to Amanda's question.

"...That can't be good," Keith murmured, taking a whiff of the air, getting a slight metallic odor as he did so. Chespin immediately charged forward, with the group in hot pursuit. Keith's mind raced, worrying about just what they were about to find. And, as it turned out, not without good reason.

"...Eep," Meowth squeaked.

"...Arceus almighty above," Keith added, for at that moment, they came to the entrance of the Vanguard base. Chespin was standing just outside, mortified, having dropped its tablet. A quick glance inside the base gave Keith a glimpse of Bryan... or rather, what was left of him. Someone or something had gotten into the base and massacred the Vanguard.

Shall I... search for... danger? Keith heard the tired telepathic tone in his head, and looked over at his Starmie.

"...No, Andromeda," Keith decided. "You did good, and you need a rest right now."

No, Andromeda responded. I want to... make sure... you're not walking... into danger. I'll rest after I search, she insisted.

Keith looked at the Starmie. "...If you're sure you're up for it," he relented. "Once you let me know whether there's still any danger in there, though, then it's back in the Psychic Ball, OK? You've more than earned a good rest as it is."

Understood, responded Andromeda.

"Alright, so if Andromeda tells us there's no danger in there, then we'll go in and check it out," Keith stated, addressing the group. "See what we can find out about what happened here. And if she says there is danger in there... well, I mean, we should check it out regardless, just with a little backup." As if to drive home the point, Keith took a Poké Ball off his belt and enlarged it, willing to put his faith in the ball's occupant as he'd been doing throughout his entire training career.

You place your trust in one of your oldest and dearest friends, Shuri the Ninjask. The Bug was the second Pokemon to join your team, however it had been quite a while since you last had the opportunity to put her into battle. The Ninjask darts around rapidly, making it hard to see apart from when it stops.

"Right Gary, let's fight!" Harry cries out and Hercules slams his arms into the ground, calling Shuri to come at him with all she had. However the Ninjask had other plans, zipping along the ground she kicks sand in the direction of the Mega Evolved Bug. The Heracross hisses as its eyes are stung by the fine silicate particles, reducing his vision and making the task of targeting the faster moving insect even harder. "Bulk Up Hercules, then burst their Double Team with Rock Blast before sticking a timer on them with Toxic!"

The Heracross flexes, its body swells even more, increasing its attack and defense, making it all the more difficult to combat. Shuri's speed boosts as she darts around rapidly, creating a plethora of after images that surround the Fighting type. Hercules doesn't waver, instead he begins to fire rocks out rapidly, creating a seemingly endless chain of them as he destroys the constructs, one after the other. Eventually only one Ninjask remains as Shuri dances around, quickly increasing her attack. This made her as deadly as she was fast, which would surely help her in her plight against the Mega Heracross. Suddenly however, the Heracross fires a volley of toxic liquid. Thankfully her speed and the Heracross's reduce accuracy allows her to avoid a direct hit, but the attack hits her nonetheless. Shuri can feel the toxins slowly sinking into her bloodstream, they would take their toll on her and make things difficult if the fight was drawn out.

"Excellent work Hercules", Harry seems quite happy with how things were transpiring. "Now make things worse for them with a Venoshock, then knock them from the skies with a Smack Down!We have dealt with more than one flying type before, you won't catch us by surprise!"
Gary frowned as the Mega Heracross’ poison had just barely clipped the speeding Shuri. Her evasive maneuvers had been working to perfection up until that point, but that tiny amount was all the Heracross needed to put Shuri on a timer as the toxins would gradually wear her down. He listened to the boy’s next commands to Heracross as he looked to take advantage of Shuri’s new status affliction and then neutralize her speed. Fortunately, Shuri was plenty buffed by now, so Gary hoped to use her increased speed and strength to put a hurt on the fighting typed bug.

As he thought his strategy over, Gary prepared himself for the worst case scenario. The Heracross was clearly much bulkier than her so guerilla tactics would have to continue to be the goal for this battle. Shuri would hopefully be able to chip the Heracross’ health down, but with the poison now in effect, Gary wondered for how long would she be able to keep it up.

“Alright Shuri, you’re doing great!” Gary called out to his cicada who buzzed nearby him. “We’re not going to be able to match it in bulk, but speed and evasion will continue to be your advantage. Let’s really mess up their vision with a blinding Flash and then create a Substitute to neutralize their rock attack. Finish things up with a powerful Aerial Ace to hit ‘em on their blindside!” Shuri quickly buzzed and nodded, taking in her trainer’s strategy as she stared down the Heracross and prepared to strike.

Sandaa- With Shuri being put on the clock, toxins flushing through his bloodstream, you knew you couldn't afford many mistakes. With Hercules' accuracy already being reduced, it was something that could be further exploited. The Mega Heracross takes aim, ready to douse the Ninjask with a volatile mix of poisons that would react with those already in Shuri's system. However, right when the Heracross is about to fire, Shuri lets out a burst of light, the startling flash throws off his aim, causing only a trickle of the poisons to strike Shuri. The Ninjask seems pleased to have avoided that attack, she seems to be moving faster as well as she gets an additional speed boost.

With Shuri appearing almost as a blur to Hercules at this point, the Heracross fails to notice Shuri set up a substitute. Intent on knocking the bug from the sky, Hercules fires a small boulder at what he believes to be Shuri. The stone strikes its target, but all that falls from the sky is some stuffing as Shuri's substitute is destroyed. Surprised by the Ninjask's technique, Hercules looks around for his real opponent. Shuri strikes like lightning, slicing across the Mega Pokemon's back with a powerful Aerial Ace. Hercules groans in pain, having his weakness exploited was expected but nonetheless painful.

"I'll give it to you Gary", grins Harry as he wipes a bead of sweat from his brow, "your strategy is a sound one. I'm really unsure if we'll be able to beat you at this rate, especially if Shuri keeps getting faster. I do wonder though, surely the faster she moves, the faster the toxic will spread throughout her body? She certainly is starting to look a little sickly." Harry isn't exaggerating, while Shuri had avoided taking too much direct damage, the toxic was working quickly on her. The timer on this battle seemed to be accelerating, would you be able to take out Hercules before Shuri fell victim to the poison?

Gary couldn’t help but smile as Shuri had managed to keep the Heracross on its toes and strike it hard with a successful plan coming together. He listened as Harry pointed out the danger presented by the increasing effect of the poison in Shuri’s body. Looking at his Ninjask, Shuri seemed to be doing fine for now, but he knew that she wouldn’t be able to keep this up for much longer. If they wanted to win this battle, Shuri would need to finish off this Heracross sooner rather than later.

“How are you feeling, Shuri?” Gary asked out of concern for his Pokemon’s health. The Ninjask quickly buzzed over and nodded with a determined look in her eyes. Gary didn’t want to push his Pokemon too hard, but his faith in Shuri wasn’t going to waver. Most certainly not today. While he always armed himself with a backup plan, Gary had no plans on calling Shuri back unless it looked like she wouldn’t be able to fight any longer. After all of the battles they went through together over the years, she deserved that much.

“Alright then, let’s put the hurt on them! First off, I want you to keep your distance and slash Heracross with a powerful Air Cutter!” Gary looked at the Lucky Rabit’s Foot tied to Shuri’s leg, hoping for the trinket to work its magic with a timely critical hit. “Next I want you to keep your distance from Heracross and sharpen your Laser Focus! Once you’re ready, strike its blindspot once again with your best Aerial Ace!”

Sandaa- With Shuri holding a lead, it seems likely that the Ninjask will be able to overcome her Mega Evolved opponent. You knew better than to count your Torchics before they hatch however, Harry was a capable trainer and with Mega Evolution on his side there was a fair chance he could pull a rabbit out of the hat. He had already poisoned Shuri, placing the Ninjask at risk of collapsing from its effects before she was able to overcome the opposing bug. Her condition was worsening, you had to finish this now.

Shuri's wings beat faster as she slices through the air, sending blades of flying energy spinning towards Hercules. You hear Harry issues orders under his breath, although it must have been loud enough for Hercules to hear as the Heracross nods. Moments later he is struck by the barrage, arms crossed he endures the attack, a glowing red aura starts to build around his body. Unsure of what Hercules was planning, Shuri locks onto him with Laser Focus, searching his body for a guaranteed weak point.

Shuri was beginning to shake, the toxins in her bloodstream were strengthening, if she was going to win she had to do it now. The streaking speedster cuts through the air, closing in on Hercules with miraculous speed.

"Bide beam now!" Harry shouts, issuing his last push for victory. The aura surrounding Hercules quickly condenses as the Mega Heracross fires a massive beam of energy straight at the incoming Shuri. You lose sight of the Ninjask due to the resulting explosion, the Ninjask had been hit. Hercules and Harry grin, but then suddenly, the Mega Heracross's face goes blank. Shuri cuts the Fighting type down with one final Aerial Ace, landing a critical hit on Hercules' exposed underbelly. The Heracross slumps down onto the pathed ground, returning to his original form as he falls unconscious.

"It seems that we didn't land a direct hit", states Harry as he recalls Hercules into an Ultraball. Shuri returns to your side, looking battered and sickly. "That was our first loss, it feels bittersweet I must say. We haven't been here long compared to most of the others, hopefully you can give them a run for their money as well. Harry digs into a pouch on his hip and tosses you a few items. Catching them in your hands, you find yourself rewarded with 3 Rare Candies and a Pecha Berry. "I'd feed Shuri that Pecha Berry quickly, I'd hate to see her suffer any further. Make your way through the cave until you find your next opponent, good luck Gary, I'm sure you can make it to the top!"

Claiming 3 Rare Candies, thanks!

It had been a tense, tough battle, but as Heracross’ Bide glanced off of Shuri the Ninjask struck the beetle in its critical spot to deliver the finishing blow. Gary grinned and pumped his fist. “Yes! Great job, Shuri!” Watching as Harry recalled Hercules back to his Ultra Ball, the trainer graciously handed Gary some Rare Candies and a Pecha Berry to heal his Ninjask’s status affliction. “You don’t have to tell me twice,” Gary smiled as he accepted the items, “Thanks a bunch; that was a great battle!” He then held the Pecha Berry out for Shuri who slowly hovered over and perched on the back of his hoodie. After feeding the berry to Shuri, Gary pulled out her Fast Ball. “That was some great work out there, Shuri, you deserve a rest.” The Ninjask gladly recalled herself back into her ball, taking the opportunity to recover.

Gary then listened as Harry wished him luck and directed him to the cave ahead, where his next battle was likely to be found. He thanked Harry once again and bid him farewell, making his way up the trail. As he walked, his mind began to wander, thinking about what kind of opponent he might face next. If Mega Heracross was just the first opponent, then he knew he was in store for some stiff competition ahead. In order to make it through the five remaining Mega Evolutions, he would need his wits about him and every ounce that his most experienced Pokemon could give him. Finally approaching the cave, Gary looked ahead to see what was in store for him.

Sandaa- As you make your way into the cave, you notice the marble path continues. You're not following it for long before you here a familiar sound, the rushing of water. It doesn't take long for you to find the source of the sound, as the path soon comes to a stop at the edge of a rapidly flowing river. The river must be at least fifteen metres across, but there was no bridge to be seen. Large stone boulders poked out of the water, but they were too far apart to be used as a means of crossing. You're peering down into the water when you notice a dark shadow appear beneath the surface, moments later you're stumbling backwards as a giant figure erupts from the water. The entire cave trembles as the Gyarados lets out a terrifying roar, eventually settling back down in the water as you scramble to your feet.

"Nevermind her", says a mysterious voice, "she's just excited to see someone new up here." A woman rises to stand a top the mighty Gyarados, her platinum blonde hair tied back in a ponytail that runs down her back, hanging right down to her hip. She's sporting a tight black bikini, which does little more than cover her private areas and accentuate her ridiculously fit body. "So you made it past Harry? The kid goes alright, even for a rookie, you must be fairly good then. My name is Jasmine and this is my Gyarados, Gwen." The Gyarados suddenly pulls its tail out of the water, flashing a piece of armour secured at the base of her tail. A Mega Stone is set in the metal, although it really wasn't a surprise at this point. "I think you know the deal, beat me and you can continue on up the path, lose and you head home. So, who will you choose as your champion in this fight?"

Gary had made his way into the cave where he found a fast-flowing river coursing through it. For water to be moving like this, it must be more of a tunnel than a cave, Gary thought. As he looked for a way across, he realized that passage was going to be tricky. Then, without warning, a massive figure rose from the depths of the river and let out a fearsome roar. It was something Gary had experienced a few times before, but it still seemed to send a shiver down his spine every time. Just as the Gyarados stared down at him, a friendlier voice called out to him.

Looking over to the source, Gary noticed a beautiful woman who appeared to be the Gyarados’ trainer. She introduced herself as Jasmine and confirmed that she was the next master of mega evolution that Gary would have to fight through. Always up for the challenge, a smile crept onto Gary’s face. “Nice to meet you, I’m Gary from the Johto region. I’ve battled Gyarados before, but never a Mega Evolution before so I look forward to the challenge!”

Gary’s thoughts cycled through past experiences with the aquatic serpent. He had taken one down long ago with the combined help of Rena the Stantler and Shuri. His Pokemon were much stronger now; but Shuri just battled so using her was out of the question. Additionally, the cavernous terrain and river didn’t seem to suit Rena the best. As he thought over his team’s composition and type matchups, the answer was simple. Pulling out a familiar Love Ball, Gary prepared to throw it. “Alright let’s do this, Amph-”

However, before he could release the Ampharos, psychic energy pulsed from Gary’s Pokeball clip as a Luxury Ball popped open in a bright flash. Before him stood Kratos the Golduck, whose eyes immediately locked with the Gyarados’ in a display of pure hatred. “Crap.” Gary bit his lip as he watched this unfold. This was not the matchup he wanted to take, and he knew that Kratos would not be stopped now. “Kratos! Stand down!” Gary called out, but was having a hard time getting through to his Pokemon.

Kratos was so furious that his thoughts began to telepathically broadcast to his trainer subconsciously. A familiar scene flashed before Gary’s eyes, as if he were reliving it all over again. There he stood, once again at the shore of Lapis Lake in the Water Zone. At his side was his trusty Stantler, Rena, as they faced off against a young and confident Psyduck. Suddenly without warning, a massive creature erupted from the lake and scooped up the weakened Psyduck in its jaws, looking to make him its next meal.

Gary’s vision went black before returning to normal. “Kratos!” Gary called out once again, and this time his Golduck turned and made eye contact. “This is for you. But I need you to focus and listen to my commands, got it?” The Golduck nodded without the slightest hesitation, as the trainer and Pokemon shared a bond of trust that would not soon be broken. This matchup was not ideal, so Gary was going to have to think hard to get through this. After thinking up a strategy, Gary called out to Kratos, “Okay Kratos, let’s start this off by summoning a Guardian Terrain to protect yourself! Throw them off next with a deafening Screech and then continue to chip away at their defenses with a Rock Smash!” As he listened to Gary’s orders, Kratos took a deep breath and focused. He looked back up at the Gyarados with a determined look in his eyes as he prepared to face one of his greatest enemies.

Sandaa- It seemed that you didn't really have a choice on what Pokemon you were going to use in this fight, as Kratos takes it upon himself to face off against the Gyarados. The Golduck still harberd a lot of hatred for the species, although it wasn't without a valid reason. This would certainly be a tighter contest, neither Pokemon held a type advantage but Jasmine's Gyarados was about to have a power advantage. The Gyarados looms over Kratos, intimidating him and lowering his attack strength. Things only get worse as Jasmine whips her hair around, revealing her mega stone on a braid at the end of her pony tail. It immediately lights up as she deftly leaps down from the Gyarados's back, the Water type's stone also begins to glow. Soon the Gyarados is surrounded in a rainbow of light as its body changes and matures. Its previously serpent like body becomes more rigid as large, sail like wings develop on its back. The crest on its head grows larger and changes to a pitch black colour, perhaps alluding to a change in type.

"You might not know this, but Mega Gyarados sheds its Flying typing and becomes a Dark Type." Jasmine confirms that more than Gwen's figure had changed during the Mega Evolution process. "Now how about we get started? Gwen slow it down with a Scary Face then fire a Dragon Pulse before latching onto it with a Crunch!"

Kratos slams a glowing hand into the ground, causing a pulse of energy to flow through the battlefield. Kratos grins, knowing that Gwen would have a harder time restricting him with statuses. The Mega Gyarados doesn't seem to care too much about the unfamiliar technique though, her face begins to darken and intensify as she gives Kratos a good look of her scary face. The Golduck trembles with fear, he feels his muscles tighten and his nerves shiver as his speed is reduced. Stuck with fear, Kratos is a sitting 'duck' as Gwen belches a powerful pulse of dragon energy. The attack washes over Kratos, sending the Golduck tumbling backwards, coming to a stop right in front of you.

Rising back to his feet, Kratos rushes back into the fight, screeching at the top of his lungs. Gwen shakes in distress as her ears are assaulted, her defense dropping and opening a weakness for Kratos to exploit. Angered by the Golduck's sonic assault, Gwen lunges at him, crunching down on the Golduck's tail and pulling him into the water. The Gyarados shakes him around violently, sending water splashing out over the floor of the cave. Kratos cries out in pain as the Mega Gyarados's razor sharp teeth sink into his skin. Lashing out, he smashes the Gyarados in the face, the super effective attack causes a further drop in her defense while also causing her to let go of Kratos. The Golduck scrambles up onto one of the boulders in the middle of the river, his eyes remain locked on Gwen with a fierce anger that only seems to be growing.

"Your Golduck has plenty of fight in him", applauded Jasmine. "Gwen keep them on their toes, blow them away with a Twister then boost yourself with a Dragon Dance. Follow that up with a Dragon Tail."

Kratos had taken some tasty hits already, although it seemed he had reduced the Gyarados's defense significantly, perhaps providing an opening he could exploit.

Meetan- Choosing to fight on a fairer playing field, you opt to battle David and the Cubone with Jasper the Sableye, rather than Lorin who would have likely made light work of the Ground type. The gem gremlin eyes off his opponent, even though he could sense his trainer was playing nice, there was still touch of malice in his movements. David smiled, eager to kick off his first real battle he issues orders to his Cubone friend. "Rush it with a Headbutt Cubone, then smack it in the head with a Bone Club! Then Growl at them so they know who's the boss!"

The Cubone rushes towards Jasper, head lowered as it prepares to headbutt him. The Sableye gives it a peculiar look, surprised by the Cubone's actions. The reason for this becomes apparent as the Cubone passes straight through the ghost typed Sableye, it seems David had made a rookie error! "Oh shit", shouts the boy, Ghost Pokemon are immune to Normal type and Fighting type moves aren't they?! I can't believe I forgot that!" Jasper turns and thrusts his hand out, pressing it down on the Cubone's exposed back and leaving a dark mark. The mark would prevent the lonely Pokemon from using any moves that the Sableye also knew. As the Cubone turns back around to face his opponent, he finds the Sableye leering down at him. His defense drops as he cowers back a bit, but a look to his friend reassures him. Gripping his bone with both hands, the Cubone swings the club around, striking Jasper's head with tremendous force. All the kids gasp as the Sableye's head does almost a 360 degree turn, that hit seemed much stronger than it should have been. That is when you notice it, the club in the Cubone's hands looked Thicker than they normally did. Somewhat disgruntled by that unsuspected hit, Jasper feints left, causing the Cubone to shift its guard. The Sableye quickly steps back and darts in from the right however, landing sneaky hit on the Cubone's exposed flank. The Cubone growls in response, causing Jasper to back off as his attack strength is reduced.

"Great work so far Cubone! You're super strong!" David seemed to be enjoying himself, but he was only a rookie trainer, if he got too cocky he could make mistakes. Tail Whip, then Focus Energy before you try one of your Bonemerangs!"

Alice grinned as David called out his attacks, knowing exactly what was going to happen. Sure enough the Cubone tumbled right through Jasper, leaving the enemy exposed to her own orders. She flinched, gasping as well when the ghost took a hard hit from the club, sounding out a low 'ooooh' as her Pokemon's head eerily rotated from the blow. As much as the attack might have hurt - Jasper staggered back a bit - his head ever so slowly spun back to the correct position. Time to get the holy water. "Okay, so firstly. Language." She scolded the boy, although her voice wasn't fully serious and was laced with sarcasm. "Secondly, Jasper. My boy. Nightmare fuel. C'mon, man."

Her little fighter sniggered, claws at his lips and faced glanced back to Alice, standard grin mischievous or even malicious-seeming given the circumstances. Alice heard the oncoming orders and knew they had to act before things turned sour. Bonemerang was not a move that they wanted to suffer the full force of. "Use your recover, then throw off the Cubone's aim with dazzling gleam! Dodge what you can - phase through something if you need to, then rattle it with a metal burst!" She hoped that if the Cubone's sight and hearing were messed with, its balance and aim would suffer. They had nothing super effective for this clash but Alice had confidence in her Sableye's abilities. The Pokemon began to glow, twitching as it tried to recover some of the health it had lost. It wouldn't be long before it tried to combat the wild one's next moves with its own.

Meetan- As Jasper's gems begin to glow and he restores his health, the Cubone puts on a cute display. The little ground type spins around, whipping his tail at Jasper and causing him to lower his guard, his defense dropping in the process.

David laughs, "you aren't my mum!" The kid seemed to be really enjoying himself, the smile stretching from ear to ear was an indication of this. As the Cubone focuses its energy, Jasper begins to glow even brighter. He focuses his hands in front of his chest, fostering an orb of fairy energy. Picking an opportune moment, the Sableye grins as he bursts the orb, causing a bright flood of fairy energy to wash over the Cubone. The Ground type whines as it takes its first real hit, thankfully it's skull helmet protects its eyes quite well. Despite this his eyes are a little dazed.

As the Cubone adjust his grip on his thick club, Jasper coats himself in a silvery aura. The Cubone pulls its bone back over its shoulder before throwing it forward with startling speed and precision. The bone comes spinning towards Jasper, striking his right shoulder with a sickening crunch as it continues spinning past him. The bone arcs back around through the air, coming back in towards Jasper for another hit. The Sableye attempts to avoid the attack but it comes in too quick, striking his back for a critical hit! The Dark type moans in pain as the Cubone catches its bone, pleased with its achievements so far. Jasper lifts himself up and grins, the aura around him had grown, it was now flaring intensely. Throwing his arms out, he releases a burst of steel energy, the mighty surge slams into the Cubone and sends it flying backwards, crashing into the ground at David's feet.

"Cubone!" Shouts the boy, scared that his friend may have been hurt. The Metal Burst had indeed been powerful, but it seems it wasn't enough to discourage the surprisingly resilient Cubone as it slowly props itself back up with its bone.

"Go David", shout the kids, "you can do it Cubone!" Both David and the Cubone are surprised by their cheer squad, both not familiar with having support. The Cubone turns back to face David, a look of renewed confidence in its eyes.

"What is it Cubone?" Questions David, unsure of what was wrong with his friend. Suddenly the Cubone begins to glow, its body starting to grow and change. As its body develops, it grows into its skull, causing it to change shape as well. Its bone grows longer as well, making it an even deadlier weapon. As the light fades, David finds himself no longer in the presence of a Cubone, his friend had evolved into a Marowak!

Marooooooowak!

The Marowak spins its bone around in its hand, showing off its skills and testing out its new form. David has a shocked look on his face, as do the other children. "Did you just evolve Cubone? Oops, I mean Marowak?" The ground type nods. "You're in trouble now Alice! How about we try this one more time? Marowak give them one last Bone Club!" The Marowak locks eyes with Jasper and starts rushing towards him, bone held low and ready to deliver a final blow.

Tate-

The Smeargle watched with a certain interest as Pena tried to make form out of the Painter Pokemon's painting. The Tyrogue soon stepped back, and watched with a certain interest as his fellow artist examined the edits. It gave Pena a thumbs up, and then looked at you. You gave it the advice of trying to use two different colors. That way it could make its paintings pop. The Smeargle looked at you confused, processing what you were saying. Looking at the wall once again, the Smeargle started yet another work of art.

This time, you could see the Smeargle start off with a light shade of green. It seemed to like green for some reason. Then it transitioned to a dark, pine green. Not exactly what you asked for, but the concept was there. The Smeargle continued to paint, this time making a landscape of trees. This time, it seemed to actually look decent despite how monochromatic it was. You could make out trees, mountains, and even a river going through the landscape. It would've been really good, if it wasn't all in shades of green. What was with this Pokemon and the color green? Was it that the Smeargle could only paint with that color? Or was there some other reason.

Pena, looking at it, seemed incredibly impressed. However, he wanted to do his own variant. Grabbing cans of green, blue, and brown, the Tyrogue recreated the Smeargle's landscape in spray paint. The Smeargle watched in awe and clapped. It looked happy to see the other Pokemon try and copy its work. Yet, Pena soon pointed at his painting and compared it to the Smeargle's. He seemed to be... to be comparing the colors? The Smeargle looked confused, like it didn't see any difference in the colors. That was certainly odd...

What do you do?

Gary watched in wonder as Jasmine’s Gyarados transformed and grew before his eyes. Jasmine mentioned something about the mega evolution causing a shift in GYarados’ secondary type from flying to dark, something he would need to keep in mind as the battle unfolded. Kratos set up a protective terrain effect and screeched harshly before the Gyarados blasted him with powerful energy and then crunched down on him. Gary winced, watching his Golduck take the hit, but knew in a roundabout way working through this battle would help Kratos move past his trauma from all those years ago.

“You doing alright, Kratos?” Gary called out as he watched his Pokemon. Kratos was breating heavily, but he quickly nodded and gave a thumbs up. The dark typing that Gyarados had gained was nasty alright, and Gary knew Kratos would have to work hard to get around it. Fortunately Kratos was able to keep his wits about him as promised and was still ready to go. Gary quickly thought of a plan to try and tackle the Mega Gyarados next and called it out to his Golduck.

“Alright Kratos, let’s try this: Gyarados’ last attack was Crunch, so try your best to Disable it! It’s going to start boosting itself up next, so I want you to Psych yourself Up and copy its stat changes to level the playing field! After that it’s going to try and strike you with a Dragon Tail, so let’s cut in front with a Me First and show it how it’s done!”

Sandaa- With Kratos already taking some nasty hits, you know that you have to play smart if you're going to help the Golduck overcome the Mega Gyarados. Most importantly, you needed to stop the Gwen from using Crunch again, luckily Kratos possessed just the right attack. The Golduck's gem glows and his eyes light up as he puts a strange lock on the powerful serpent. The disabling technique would prevent the Gyarados for using Crunch, at least for a while. Gwen seems to pay little attention to that for now, instead she continues to attack. Her giant maw snaps open as she bellows a powerful twister of wind and dragon energy. The attack smashes into Kratos's chest, sending him flying backwards. The Golduck eventually crashes into the water but he quickly pops back up to the surface, a look of renewed hatred on his face.

With her foe in the water once more, Gwen begins to dance around, moving with both aggression and elegance. Her attack power seems to increase, as does her speed as she seems to be moving faster than before. Kratos seems envious of the serpent's boosts, pulling himself back up onto a nearby boulder, he slaps himself across the head, in an attempt to psych himself up. The Golduck shouts at the Gyarados, flexing his muscles as he feels himself strengthen. He now possesses the same boosts as Gwen, however it seems something may have been overlooked. Kratos also seems to be experiencing the same defense drop as the Mega Gyarados, his guard is left open, making him more susceptible to physical attacks.

As Gwen prepares her next attack, her tail starting to glow green, Kratos beats her to the punch. He strikes first, leaping up through the air he somersaults, slamming his tail down onto the Gyarados's head, forcing it under the water. As Kratos leaps back onto a boulder, Gwen retaliates, swinging her tail around with tremendous strength. Rocks fly everywhere as the boulder is shattered and Kratos is batted away, crashing onto the ground on your side of the river. The Golduck pulls himself up, that attack hurt.

The Marowak locks eyes with Jasper and starts rushing towards him, bone held low and ready to deliver a final blow.
She might not have been David's mum, and Alice certainly didn't want kids of her own either, but her maternal side came through in moments like this even if it was in a teasing way. She was glad they were both enjoying the battle and that the once-hopeless male now knew what it was like to feel supported and have some sense of purpose-- although as was soon to become clear, the spoiled brat's enjoyment of this was linked to the belief that she had this in the bag. Alice did not in fact, have this in the bag. “Aw, fudge, dude.” Gotta censor it for the younglings.

Alice had been optimistic until the Cubone took on a brilliant shine. Observing an evolution was always a very magical, wonderful thing but right now it was a fucking nightmare. Her attempt at trying to balance the playing field had been hurled unceremoniously back in her fucking face, and now she was faced with the nightmare that Jasper was underleveled and under-equipped against his opponent. For all that Arceus loved, damn it.

“Yeah, thanks for pointing that out to me, man.” The blonde grimaced, but she wasn't about to give up. There was a subtle change in Jasper. He seemed tenser, the grin on his face seeming to hint at nervousness knowing that his trainer was losing confidence (and rightly so). “Okay, man, we're gonna have to play this carefully. Use your feint attack to dodge the attack with speed, then metal burst and dazzling gleam!” She had been tempted by sucker punch, but anything within too close a proximity was going to be too risky. Their best option would be to try and force it to drop its club while messing with its senses, and right now they were at least doing the latter.

What do you do?

Tate watched the Pokémon paint. It was nice seeing Pena interact with someone outside of the family; the anthropophobic Tyrogue barely managed to be in the presence of Tate's other Pokémon most days, much less a stranger. Maybe it was their shared interest in art that helped put Pena at ease? The Smeargle... didn't seem quite right, however. Rather than simply being bad at painting, it almost appeared unable to do so with the mastery expected of it's species. It was possible that it simply liked green, or for some reason couldn't produce colors other than green, but as the Smeargle stared between it's monochromatic work an Pena's polychromatic imitation, Tate had an inkling that something else entirely was the issue.

"Hey, guys," Tate broached, maintaining a chipper tone despite the sad idea that was being contemplated. "Let's play a game. Bring me the paint, Pena."

Pena looked at his trainer quizzically for a moment, but oveyed, gathering up the scattered cans. Sitting down on the concrete, Tate matched each can with it's corresponding, brightly colored lid. Standing three cans -- red, yellow, and blue -- up in front of crossed legs, Tate stowed the extra cans before producing a Fire Stone from the overstuffed backpack the trainer carried at all times.

"Pena," Tate said, holding up the Fire Stone. "What color is this?"

Pena studied the rock for a time; it was a tricky question, as it was multicolored, but eventually Pena pointed at the yellow can, deeming it to be the most prominent color. Tate nodded and reached into the bag, pulling out a ripe Figy Berry to reward Pena with. The Tyrogue accepted the fruit with delight. Swapping the Fire Stone out with one of three -- Tate was a bit of a hoarder -- Water Stones that littered the bag, the trainer held it up for the Smeargle.

"Can you show me what color this is?" Tate asked, gently. "I'll give you a nice Berry, if you can."

Meetan- With David and his newly evolved Marowak proving to be a much tougher challenge then you could have anticipated, you think carefully about how you could avoid any unwanted humiliation. With the Marowak coming in quickly, you instruct Jasper to try and avoid the bone wielder's final blow. The Sabeleye twitches, preparing to slink out of the way at the opportune moment. As the Ground type swings its bulky bone around to strike, the Sableye suddenly slinks to the side. The bone still manages to clip his shoulder, causing some damage but nothing too concerning. Jasper then strikes at the Marowak's ribs, sinking claws cloaked with dark energy into his opponents hide. The Marowak groans as it clutches at its ribs, the attack hurting it considerably.

As Jasper waits for the Marowak's next move, he realizes that it shows no signs of attacking. "I think that is enough Marowak. Thank you Alice, I think me and Marowak work great together! Now I just need to catch you Marowak." The Ground type turns and walks back towards the boy, seemingly pleased with the prospect of being caught. One of the kids rush over to David, clutching something in his hands.

"You should have this David, you'll need a Pokeball if you want to catch your Marowak", the boy hands David a white Premier Ball, it was scratched up and looked a little worse for wear, but it would do the job.

"Thank you so much", replies David as he accepts the ball. "What do you think Marowak, would you like to be my Pokemon?" David holds out the ball towards the Ground type, waiting anxiously for its response. The Marowak doesn't even pause, nodding it steps forward to tap the ball with its skull. The Marowak is enveloped by a red light and drawn into the ball, which only shakes once before settling with a click. "Woo!" David shouts, thrusting the Premierball towards the sky. The other children cheer and congratulate him, while Jasper kind of just glares at the kid, with his shoulders hunched and chest heaving. "Thank you so much Alice", David digs into his pockets and produces a small item. Walking over, he presents you with a Heart Scale, "we found that when we were playing in the sand pit the other day, I don't know what you're meant to do with them but hopefully you can put it to good use." Suddenly David's mood goes from one of happiness and joy, to one more sullen and serious. "Now that I have my own Pokemon, I can show my brother how tough I really am. He is going to regret treating me like shit." The young boy clenches his fist, just what was he planning on doing?

Jasper gained 4 levels!

Alice was quietly relieved that David had decided to end the fight early, because she knew that Jasper would've had a hard time otherwise. "Sure, no problem." She replied, playing it a lot cooler than she felt. She crossed the makeshift arena, glancing down at her glaring ghost, unsure whether he was salty to have the battle cut off or simply because he'd taken more damage than anticipated. "Come on, mister. Use your recover and then you can take a rest." She said. Lorin waddled up after her, calling out his praises to Jasper, who peered down with a hint of virility. He simply grunted, taking to healing himself, and Alice scooped up her Lotad again. Jasper grew from level three to level seven!

"A Premier Ball? Nice." She said approvingly. It was a little roughed up, but Alice felt it fit their aesthetic all around for the moment. "You know, you should try to come up with a nickname for Marowak. Maybe do it together. It'd help separate him from others and bond you together more." The trainer paused, jumping when she felt Jasper scramble up to settle his arms around her shoulders. He was extremely light given his typing, and there was a clear contrast between Alice's friendliness and the sinister expression Jasper defaulted to.

"Oh, wow. I can definitely make use of that. Thank you." Alice took the heart scale with genuine gratitude. She opened her bag to put it away securely, burying it down so it couldn't be so easily swiped if they ran into proper foes, "Just be careful. Don't get too ahead of yourself... What're you thinking of doing? Battling him?"

Meetan- You happily accept the Heart Scale from the kid, stashing it deep in your bag so no one could easily swipe it from you. Jasper begins to heal himself, his gems glowing once more as he recovers some vitality. Lorin makes her presence known again, waddling over only to be scooped back up into your arms.

"Yeah you're right", replies David as you suggest he consider giving his new Marowak a nickname. Anger continuing to grow, the young boy fills you in on his intentions. "I'm going to do more than battle him, I'm going to destroy him." You can see tears beginning to form in the corners of the boys eyes. "All those times he beat me, all those times he used me, all those times he treated me like trash. Now I get to fight back and make him pay." Before you can get another word in, the chubby boy books it, rushing back the way you came, tears rushing down his cheeks.

Most of the kids disperse, heading off to do their own thing, however Terry and Janie remain, still obviously worried about David. "Maybe we should follow him?" Terry suggests to you, "that Marowak is strong but it just battled and I don't think David's brother Gary would have a weak Pokemon. If he loses his brother will likely beat him again and probably take Marowak from him." Janie nods in agreeance, if David was to lose, the boy would be devastated and pushed to a point he probably wouldn't be able to get back from. "He has probably gone back to his place", notes Terry, "I have a rough idea where it is but we better get going, if you think we should that is."

"... That was both very what I was expecting, but also not." Alice grimaced as David fled from the group. The tears were a touch that she hadn't anticipated until the kid's eyes were welling up and pouring, and she was disappointed that most of the others had gone their separate ways. Of course, as a responsible adult, she also felt it was for the best. To follow David would be to infringe on enemy lines, and it would be bad enough having to protect David without having to babysit the rest of them. Alice had just hoped they had bonded more, thought they might react in a more concerned manner. At least two remained, in spite of her worries for their safety. Alice had Pokemon that could track but it wasn't as reliable as local knowledge knowledge, and time was of the essence now.

"I wouldn't normally say that, but I definitely think we should. You're right. David won't be the same whatever way his plan turns out. He'll either go off the bad end the way his brother has, or he'll be crushed by the defeat forever. There's no good way for this to go." Alice said, and Lorin echoed his concerns. Jasper hovered, staring in the direction the child went, his grin now downturned to something more serious. It could easily be interpreted as aggressive. "You lead the way, but don't go running into trouble if you see it. We have to put ourselves first or if worst comes to worst, David won't have anyone there to pick up the pieces."

Slice and Tremor, caught off guard, quickly stop trying to beat each other up and start struggling within her coils, to the serpent's pleasure before they give up and sag down in defeat.

With the two subdued, they look towards you before pointing at each other, trying to implicate the other for blame, but their protests are met with Vega's crimson tail pointed at their throats, and fearing for their lives immediately understand and lower their claws. It is at this point that Polaris nudges you with a report, the Tynamo's buzzing unfortunately not to your understanding. However, as the crowd begins to disperse, it becomes clear as day what the flash mob was surrounding.

A young man lies on the ground, face pale as snow and dull eyes staring up at the clouded sky, breathing slowly. As the electric eel wiggles around, you approach the figure for a closer look. His clothes are a little roughened, and of particular note is the empty bag lying by him, as it appears the man has been an unfortunate victim of a mugging. Taking the sight to point, Vega hisses at Slice and Tremor before relinquishing her hold on them and nudging the pair forward, urging them to grab the man and to bring him along. As the pair close in, the man's eyes drift to the side and spot you, and as your eyes meet, dry lips move, forming barely audible words.

"What...where...who...can't...remember...purple... "

The Combusken reaches him first as he closes his eyes, consciousness leaving him and leaving you with more questions than answers, clearly. As Slice looks at you, Tremor barks before clumsily lifting the man's legs, prompting the chicken to take him by the arms, and the pair gawk at you as though expecting further instructions. What's the plan?
Luc looked at the unfortunate man and shook his head in disbelief. This was not the kind of thing that would happen in civilized Kalos. But he wasn't in Kalos anymore.

Alas, you cannot write "Badlam" without "bad". I think.

Judging by the sight before him, the victim had been robbed, forcibly so. He was left beaten, confused and on the brink of fainting, seemingly recalling nothing but the color purple.

Of all the nice, "façonnable" hues to choose from... Poor thing.

Not all was bad though; Slice and Tremor went on to demonstrate a common sense Luc was unsure they possessed, by sharing the effort of picking up the man after he inevitably passed out from his injuries. At the very least, they were a step above wild Pokemon; it was a start.

As long as their hands are busy carrying the man, they won't beat one another up. And besides, none of my friends have the necessary strength to replace them in the task. C'est pas mal, not at all.

"Monsieur Tremor, Monsieur Slice," Luc addressed the clumsy duo as respectfully as his upbringing allowed, "this man is in need of medical attention. We proceed to our destination and he shall accompany us. May your grip not falter."

Vega coiled and hissed, punctuating Luc's well-meaning words with a glare that added "because if it falters just once...". The Kalosian recalled the map that Officer Whetstone had shown him, then tried to regain his bearings. Powerful as Vega was, and tenacious as Polaris was, they could not afford to be caught off-guard by whoever had mugged the injured man they now carried; the team had to be one step ahead - they needed a scout.

"Time to shine, Betelgeuse."

A Luxury Ball snapped open in mid-air and released a Ninjask from within. Betelgeuse was every bit as reliable as he was cocky; as much as his overconfidence annoyed Luc, the man seldom found reason to chastise the beetle, who had the tendency to always back up his inflated ego with results.

"We need you to move ahead, and return to us at the sight of trouble. We cannot afford to be ambushed on the way to our destination... for this man's sake."

The Ribs care not for domination and running the city, but rather see it as their playground and wish to expand into other locations, at the behest of their boss. Those who wish to try the life of a street gangster would do well to check the area out as they are always welcoming to new members, though crossing them will leave you in a sticky situation. Despite the state of the place, many urban pokemon have made the mall their home, enjoying the organised medley of craziness. Reply in Cyan.
Will was always one to look for adventure. Being confined to his own house with his father for so long made him want to explore the more interesting parts of the world now, even though it looked a little odd for a man in his mid-twenties to be doing so. As he walked along the trail leading to the mall, he couldn't help but feel a sense of dread boiling over in his heart. He knew that this was gang territory, as in the kind of people that would rob you blind and spit on your corpse when you were finally dead. Will wasn't exactly the kind of person who knew how to deal with people like that, hell, sometimes he felt his arms being a little too sore after throwing a Pokeball with too much force. He was, however, the kind of person who wouldn't tolerate any shit that came his way.

As he continued, he saw the abandoned mall coming into his sights. It was just as trashed as he imagined, windows broken, covered in graffiti, and full of all sorts of nooks and crannies for interesting Pokemon to be hiding in. Alana, however, seemed less than enthused to be following her trainer into what she was sure was certain doom. The little Sentret trusted her trainer, sure she did, but sometimes he happened to think with his heart rather than his head. This in itself was unfamiliar territory, why couldn't they have stayed in Kalos where it was safe? Fizzytopia had far too much mystery for her liking, and she was sure that her trainer was going to get himself killed if he so much as put one foot into that mall. However, she was bound by her duty to her trainer. She stuck close to his side, crawling on all fours, the pavement felt sickeningly hot on her paw pads.

Will knew little of the quarrel between the Ribs and the Shells, all he knew for certain was that he did not want to be involved. Upon entering the ridge, may people had warned him to stay away from the mall --- unfortunately for them, if you tell Will not to do something... that's exactly what he'd going to do. As he arrived at the door of the mall, he gave it a strong pull. Despite Alana's misgivings, he was certainly going in headfirst. What awaited him here, was the next question.

Ribcage Mall

Naruxami: Heathens.

This city is crawling with the depraved. That good people continue to try to eek out a living in the remains of society is a testament to human perseverance, but also perhaps a mark of its futility. In Bedlam, no soul emerges untarnished.

You stand before a wretched have of scum and villainy -- or so you've been told. You've never actually been to this place; you've never met any of its denizens. The setting sun casts long shadows over the cars on bricks and colorful graffiti that litters the massive parking lot. There's so much debris that you find it difficult to avoid stepping on an errant piece of glass or twisted bit of wire. Brown bottles with torn labels sparkle like gemstones around a scorched trash can a few yards from the entrance. Alana doesn't like the feel of this place, but it's hard to give credence to the opinions of a creature whose very nature is paranoia. Still, as you step over a grubby syringe casually littered onto the sidewalk you have to ask yourself: why are you here? What do you hope will come from this?

This is no place for good people.

There's a board with the mall's operating hours on the inside of the glass door. How long had it been since it was relevant, and moreover, how had it endured so long in the hysteria? You tug on the door, and it gives, swinging open with a metallic squeak of the hinges that echoes through the atrium. The sound of fluttering wings lights up the air as somewhere above you -- probably on the roof -- a flock of something takes flight. Was that because of you?

The atrium seems deserted as you walk inside. Trash is strewn across what was once probably very nice tile. A dried-up fountain glows ethereally under a skylight. As far as you can tell, there is no electricity here, although this assumption is based solely on the darkened state of the shops that line the space. Once the sun sets, it can be expected that this area will go dark too -- or so you surmise.

On the opposite side of the atrium is a pair of escalators -- one going up, and one going down. They aren't moving, a fact which doesn't surprise you, but that doesn't really matter because what are broken escalators but stairs?

As you slowly cross the open space, you kick something that rattles hollowly as it skitters across the floor: a soda can. The sudden, unexpected sound is jarring, but less unsettling than when the exact same sound reverberates from inside one of the dark storefronts a few seconds later; too delayed to be a mere echo. Understandably, your head snaps to face the direction of the noise -- a quaint (or so it probably was before the graffiti and smashed windows) apparel store that appears to specialize in young women's clothing.

As you peer into the darkened store, determining if this is something you want -- or should -- look into, your attention is demanded elsewhere, however. From the corner of your eye you see a yellow flicker, and when you look, you realize that there is a faint light burning somewhere at the foot of the descending escalator. You don't have time to give it the consideration it deserves, though, because Alana alerts you to something else entirely: at the top of the ascending escalator, on the darkened mezzanine, it almost looks like something is moving.

What will you do?
