Green Lantern is in my opinion the best example in existence of writers not understanding how their creations could work. The way the power rings are described they could literally solve every problem ever without any kind of difficulty. Green Lantern could rip Superman apart in a heartbeat and if he were connected to the central power battery on Oa have enough spare energy to take out the entire X Men roster. But the Green Lantern Corps is such a hilariously awful organisation that they hire people who think making a mallet is the epitome of subtlety.
Much like Magneto could kill everyone on the planet with a thought or the Flash could just go around exploding things. My personal favourite is that the existence of Star Trek replicators would destroy your economy and lead to massive apocalypse. |

They sort of explain that Earth's economy in Star Trek is no longer the same. People do things out of the goodness of their hearts or some such nonsense. This is why we don't see any real currency except in DS9 due to the Ferengi's use of latinum, which can't be replicated.
