ah, AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
OH MY GOD I'm sorry but listening to that japanese announcer say "pokemonu origin" was the highlight of my day. From a wikipedia page entitled "English Language Education in Japan," sourced from a few essays in writing. I bring this out whenever someone wants to know why the hell that sign they saw in Japan had both English and Japanese on it when the English was clearly horrible. Quote:
Which is why this exists:

To answer Kind's question, yes, it has happened before where a series got a 2-hour adaptation first and then a TV series later (X/1999, Kyou no 5-2, and Ah! My Goddess come to mind), but it's not exactly common, and Nintendo's continuous mismanaging of the anime side of their franchise is discouraging to say the least.
The one encouraging thing is the direction of the trend. First we had no non-ShoPro anime productions period. Then we had the five minute BW2 promotional video. Then we had this 90-minute or so special. At least we're going in the direction of longer, meatier, video game canon-accurate anime productions. I can't help but be convinced that production on Pokémon: the Origin was gotten underway in response to fans' vigorous enthusiasm for the BW2 promo. If fans just as eagerly celebrate P:tO, it could very well positively feed back into Nintendo producing a season-length adaptation, be it of Gen 1, Gen 6, Gen 7, or surprisingly any of the other four.

Like others I'm excited for it but would rather it be a full length anime rather than a one episode special. This does look like the right direction story-wise.
No...just no. Unless the manga you're referring to is Electric Tales, but I honestly doubt that. |

I don't want any of the mangas.
(Manga spoilers for one of the two; can't be arsed to figure out which one so beware!) Spoiler: show What I want is Series 1 (26-52 episodes long) which explores the plot of RBY, slightly fleshed out in places that largely matches up with the past twenty years' worth of fan theories (e.g. Mr. Fuji's relationship with Blaine and role before moving to Lavender Town), but otherwise only as long as is necessary to faithfully and competently tell the game's story in a beautiful animated format. What I want is Series 2 (39-52 episodes long) which then, like the game it's adapting, is a true blue sequel to the original that takes place three years later. Same universe, hooray time skip, hooray repercussions of past events on the present. Gold/Hiroki explores Johto, challenges the League, is told "lol sorry I'm just a stand-in so you're not techncially the champ yet ^_^;" by Lance, and then proceeds to scour Kanto, toughening up and all the while asking everyone he meets the same question: do you know where I can find Red? Series finale takes place on Mt. Silver and we're good to go. Blow us away. Would be satisfied if we got all of that. Would love, but would not greedily require, the same treatments for Gens 3, 4, 5, and 6.

That raises the question of what Silver's team would be. I'm guessing Lugia/Ho-Oh, Starter, Togetic, Sudowoodo, Gyarados, and Shuckle since those (like Red's team of starters, snorlax, lapras, pikachu) are just sort of granted to the Trainer. It's also possible that Silver will catch Suicune (which would probably replace Shuckle because Shuckle doesn't get anything cool to fight with in anime), but on the other hand, Red doesn't have any legendaries :/ It would seem kind of dumb to give Silver TWO, and a shiny Gyarados, plus two extremely rare Pokemon in Sudowoodo and Togetic. And Shuckle is rare, too, but to a lesser extent. Maybe they will give Red Mewtwo in place of Snorlax. Obviously Pikachu and the Starters need to stay, but maybe they could STAY TRUE TO THE MANGA AND LET HIM USE THUFIZER!?!?!?

Meh. It looks like exactly what I wouldn't want from a new animé. I'm sure it will be cool and all but it looks like another fairly lame kids version of pokémon.

@Shuckle: The protag of Gen II is generally referred to as Gold(/Hibiki), Silver is the rival. Generally speaking the 'warmer' colour is used to refer to the male protag while the rival or female character get the 'colder' one.

Don't care, only play Silver. (but i did know that already. It just feels really unnatural since on my playthroughs of Silver my character was always "Silver" and the rival was "Gold.")

As someone who always plays the 'second' game, I know what you mean, Shuckle. But I've come to terms that the rival in Gen I is 'Blue' even though it's the version I played.

Gen 1 you really don't have a leg to stand on since Gen 2 itself made canon that the hero was Red and the rival was Blue. Gen 2 I could moreso sympathize but, again, if you go by the established precedent with Gen 1, it only makes sense to assume that they'd want Gold to be the hero and Silver to be the villain.
Disclaimer: Blue was my first Gen 1 game and Silver my first Gen 2 one as well.

I wonder, if they dub this, if they will change Green's name to Blue?

If they dub it, I think that's almost certain, even though we do have Fire Red and Leaf Green to lean on for his being rebranded as Green. (Unfortunately, a lot of fans relabeled the male protagonist as Red while leaping at the opportunity to rename the new Gen 1 female playable protagonist as Leaf, so I think that only further cements in the Western fan base's heads that Green = the girl.)
As for subtitles, nah, I would expect them to stick with Green. I mean, dat shirt.

Mumblings on Tumblr mean nothing, but rumor on the street is "'Ash and Pikachu will appear in the new anime as a crossover in one episode". NO idea where they are getting their info from, especially given this is a "special broadcast". Probably just something someone made up or misheard, but worth sharing nonetheless I suppose.

Its been confirmed by various sources that this special is airing in a time slot of about an hour and 50 minutes, and within that the special itself is sectioned into 4 parts or 'episodes' (each with their own title, like the first part is called 'Red'). So if you think about advertisements and such, each part will be the ordinary length of an episode from the TV show.
I'm actually pretty excited for this, even though it'd be cooler as a whole new animé. I haven't watched the actual Pokémon animé in a really long time but I'll be checking out a sub of this as soon as possible~ |

Warning! This post contains mild spoilers. Don't read if you don't want to watch Dave's trailers.
Realistically, any English dub you'll get will probably be done with The Pokémon Company's hired North American voice actors. So if you like their work on the ShoPro anime, great; if not, well ... ^^; Small detail, but I like how they show Oak throwing that PokéBall. When I first saw it, I actually disliked it -- "That doesn't seem natural," I thought, "Something's wrong" -- but then I realized why I felt something was wrong: Oak's shoulder is too arthritic. He's not rotating his arm all the way back. Nor is he raising it too high up before throwing the ball. Nor is he rotating it forward in an arcing throw, but is instead moving his body to help project the ball forward. That's a pretty damn clever if (incredibly) minor touch. Or maybe I'm just over-analyzing a scene I saw three times over across 60 seconds of linked footage. Really liking how old Green looks here. I realize these are meant to be game-accurate and thus he should be 10 years old ... but then again, Brock also seems to have gotten the GSC treatment (he looks like a young adult here rather than a teenager), so who knows, maybe Green and Red are being anachronistically established by the special to be 15 years old (like the heroes of Gen 5) rather than 10 years old. *shrug* Doubtful. Very doubtful. But I still do like that Green looks like a serious rival and not some dumb little 10 year old brat. Animation compliments aside, one animation criticism is the quality of the humans' faces. While the Pokémon mostly look pretty darn good, the humans seem to reveal that, despite being a one-time special into which Nintendo could've easily afforded investing the necessary budget for greatness, we're getting faces that seem kinda subpar for the 2013 course. Especially noticeable on Giovanni when he tosses that PokéBall and Red shortly after (0m24s in the first of the three trailers just posted). Not too crazy about the HP bars they show in the fight against Brock. Seems like an over-extension of trying to be video game faithful. ^_^; Interesting that they'll be allocating time to you-know-who showing up. Maybe slightly disappointing, tbh, since it's going to require at least 15 minutes (if not an entire episode) to set that one up and explore it properly. Given Stu's post just now, I'd hazard the guess that the four episodes are going to be: Spoiler: show Yeah, disappointed once again that this can't be a regular television anime instead of a special. Pleased to get something rather than nothing, but would still rather have the entire cake than a tiny slice of it. :\

I am so psyched for this you can't even imagine. I'm not one of those people who thinks Generation I is king and everything else just plain sucks (some of my favorite Pokémon are from Generations II and V, even if my all-time favorite (Weezing) is from Generation I), but Generation I is still my favorite. Yellow and Red were the first Pokémon games I ever had, and this just makes me want to squeal in a highly embarrassing fashion. There are only two ways this special can exceed my already high expectations (unlikely though both of them undoubtedly are);
1: A Weezing appears at any point. Bonus points if I deem any screenshot of it as perfect for my avatar. Even more bonus points if a Weezing appears under Red's ownership. 2: Missingno. is, at the very least, referenced in some way. Even if it's just as simple as the old guy in Viridian City mentioning abnormally strong Pokémon near Cinnabar Island just after catching a Weedle or something. If an actual Missingno. makes an actual appearance, outright impossible though this would undoubtedly be, this will officially be the best thing ever. |
