Nintendo's Next Console, Project Cafe
As some of you may know rumors about the Wii 2, known as "Project Cafe", have been picking up. The console, rumored to be unveiled at this year’s E3 conference, is supposedly going to be released in 2012. It is claimed to be more powerful than current gen systems and will support HD. One of the more interesting things is the controller, which is described as a Gamecube controller with a 6 inch HD touch screen in the middle of it. The system is said to be backwards compatible with the Wii and the Gamecube, and will support Wii remotes.
Kotaku has a fairly comprehensive roundup of earlier information here, as well as a more in depth look at the new controller here.

The controller-with-a-touchscreen sounds really expensive for something we wouldn't necessarily even want or need. I was able to imagine one slightly gimmicky but very charming use for it -- as an actual hold-in-your-hand map for use while playing JRPGs -- and that's about it. The thing is, I don't normally want to look away from the TV screen whilst playing video games on the TV. The dual screen on the Nintendo DS worked because you have two screens in such close proximity that it's pretty easy to go from looking at one to looking at the other. But most of us hold our controllers in or near our laps while we console game. So are we going to be asked to crane our necks down and then crane them right back up again while playing Wii 2 games if we need to alternate between watching the TV screen and the controller screen?
Also: if you thought Wiimotes went through batteries like Garfield through lasagna, just imagine how much juice the touchscreen controllers will go through. Surely they'll be wired to the main console!? If not ... ouch. As for personal plans ... Spoiler: show

If the controllers aren't wired to the main controller I probably wont get it, for the reasons talons listed. Also: touch screen controllers? No way I'm going to get that. Ung.

Eh, I'm kinda dubious about the touch screen controllers too, but iirc a lot of people derided the Wii when early information was released (a lot of people hated the controller idea), and to say that it's done pretty well would be an understatement. I'll see how this one pans out before I make any judgements.

Personally I also hate the wii's motion gimmick so I don't exactly have high standards for this gimmick either. >.>;

I personally think its a great idea, being a lover of both Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles and Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, these controllers only make those kinds of multiplayer gaming easier.
Talon you bring up a good point about looking back and forth between screens, I hope developers have the sense to not force that.

The looking up/down thing doesn't bother me too much. I thought it was cool using your DS as a controller in Pokemon Battle Revolution. Or at least I think you did. Maybe I don't remember it right.
Anyway, I'm more concerned about how much buying 3 more of these is going to cost. As well as any extra addons that inevitably come with a Nintendo system. |

Nice little update for you all, Miyamoto apparently says the 3DS can be used as a controller for Project Cafe.

"Nintendo have been looking at the possibility of connecting its next home video games system with the recently released Nintendo 3DS."That reads less like a feature for the Wii2 and more like an attempt to save face for the weak launch that has been the 3DS. "Hey! Your $250 handheld purchase doubles as a controller!"
