Dragonair Advanced Trainer Battle: Talon87 vs Gemini Spark [FINISHED]

Levin Sanders and Zion the Metang waited patiently by the Kingdra Fountain of Kumo's King's Castle. The sound of running water helped him calm his nerves before his inaugural battle as official League Referee. But this wasn't about him.

Cyrus and Hyrem both arrived at the same time, accompanied by their trusty Starters and battle partners for the evening - Celes the Chikorita and Sera the Kirlia respectively. The King's Castle felt like the most appropriate arena for all parties involved: with enough care not to trigger outside hazards, namely the guardian Arcanine, all the opponents had to worry about was the match itself, while at the same time discouraging mindless offense that could damage the surroundings. Levin also appreciated having few variants to factor in during his first battle, meaning he could focus on the Pokemon and their maneuvers rather than natural phenomena that might get in the way.
Cyrus had been adventuring for longer than Hyrem, and had built a reputation as a pacifist and Grass-Type specialist; despite being a veteran already, he wasn't someone Levin knew very well outside of some meetings at the Cable Club. Hyrem, on the other hand, had started out later, but had made a name for himself as one of Fizzy Bubbles' most dedicated rookies from the start; by now, his team had expanded to include all manner of Pokemon, some of which Levin had personally trained himself previously.

- Cyrus, Hyrem, thank you for coming. I'm sure you're both eager to get started, so let's not waste any time!

He cleared his throat and made the formal introductions...

As soon as the referees heard they were allowed to oversee battles between trainers again, word spread through the grapevine, and people wanted to challenge each other all over again. One trainer, Cyrus, had issued multiple challenges, but Hyrem decided to be bold and accept the battle with the highest difficulty level offered: the challenge would be against Cyrus's starter, a Chikorita named Celes. Hyrem had heard of the Grass-type specialist and how one of his goals was to get a full team of Jumpluff (and he had at least 2 Hoppip already), but that wasn't why he wished to meet him in person and battle him. His opponent was considered a veteran trainer, having lived in Fizzytopia for 7 years while he had only been here for 2 1/2 years. Considered to be one of many young upstarts who came to journey in the world of infinite adventure, he was among a select few that decided to stay after all the turmoil surrounding Fizzy Bubbles.

Still, it wasn't like he had gained recognition among the general community as far as battle prowess; though he had saved Whale Island from Kyogre's wrath and dethroned a Zangoose in the Arcane Realm--thereby earning the respect of famous people like Mr. Briney, Pike Queen Lucy, and the Elite Four of Fizzy Bubbles--he has only won battles against rival upstarts and Keith, arguably a powerful veteran trainer himself if he were to use his fully-leveled Pokemon but had lost to Hyrem twice while using his weaker Pokemon. This battle against Cyrus would be a chance to prove to the community that Hyrem was a trainer to respect, someone that could face a higher ranked trainer and come out on top.

Of course, he couldn't just use any one of his Pokemon to face Cyrus's Chikorita; it was only fitting to face someone's first Pokemon with his own, so it was finally Sera's time to shine in a battle. She had beaten an Exeggutor before and therefore had experience in dealing with Grass-types, but this battle was sure to be interesting as, according to Celes's bio, the two Pokemon had very similar play styles, something Sera and Hyrem might be able to use to their advantage...

Once Levin gave the signal to begin the battle (Hyrem was surprised to see that he was the referee, it was normally Stacey who ran higher level battles...), Hyrem gave the orders to his Kirlia. "Okay, Sera, let's start things out with a Calm Mind before using Future Sight to see what Celes has in store for her! Then defend yourself with Light Screen, okay? Now let's synch up and battle!"

Bio: When Cyrus needs a Pokémon he can trust to get the job done, Celes is his go-to girl. This spunky Chikorita has an energetic flare when it comes to Pokémon battles. Celes respects and admires Cyrus. She and her trainer are on the same page when it comes to ethical beliefs. Celes prefers to avoid inflicting harm on Pokémon, opting instead for diplomacy or gentler attacks. However, if the time calls for it, Celes will begrudgingly attack her opponents with full power. Celes cannot abide to see strong Pokémon bullying weaker Pokémon. She also has an instinctive fear of herbivorous Pokémon. Celes does not mind being inside her PokéBall, but she is naturally affectionate and thus enjoys being let out of her PokéBall to accompany Cyrus on his adventures.

Plump. Plump. Plump. Each time she took a step, her feet would sink into the clouds by several inches before the cushiony terrain gently offered her footing. She was still unused to this, even after having spent several months in the Cloud Garden with Cyrus. Grass-type Pokémon, the Chikorita remarked to herself, were not made for walking on clouds. And who walks on clouds anyway, exactly? Certainly not the birds who came closest to calling clouds "home." And most certainly not the Pokémon of the earth and sea. It was all very strange, this cloud-walking. Cute in a way, and maybe even fun if only she could allow herself to enjoy it. But it was still unnatural enough a feeling for the Chikorita that she couldn't push the thoughts completely from her mind that, at any second, the magic that kept the Cloud Garden together could at any second cease to function and everyone and everything atop these wispy platforms would go hurtling down. Unconsciously, these thoughts impacted her walking and Celes began to walk a little less naturally than she had been only several minutes before. Like a person who becomes aware of their own breathing, Celes's steps became very deliberate and somewhat ungainly.

"Nervous?"

Celes turned to look up at the source of the familiar voice. She almost lost her balance; in that very moment, she felt as though she were about to fall and that falling with such force would plunge her straight through the clouds. She caught herself with all the grace of a Magikarp. The young man by her side had to stop himself and turn around to face his partner.

"You shouldn't be," he told her. "This is a friendly match. Hyrem saw that we were in the area and wondered if we would be open to a sparring match. It's official, sure, but this is more about helping everyone figure out what they need to work on than it is winning or losing."

His words were meant to comfort her, but Celes was only further agitated. Does Cyrus not believe in my ability to win this? she glumly thought. She thought back on the battle at the top of Mt. Aduro. She had lost to a young photographer's Aipom in a battle she had felt confident she could win. Next her thoughts turned to those two sisters. Oh, those two sisters! She didn't know why Cyrus trusted them so much. It was clear that the sisters were fascinated in her partner, this Celes knew, and just as clear to her was that the two ghost types wanted nothing more than to make Cyrus theirs forever. They were dangerous, and not entirely to be trusted; and yet he kept--

Her thought was interrupted here as she was whisked off to another. She thought of Mankey and the Friend Safari. Of what that French boy had said to Cyrus. Of what Cyrus had done ...

She'd done a pretty good job up until now of not betraying her emotions on the outside but this most recent thought as sure as sure can be made her broad leaf began to wilt. Does ... does Cyrus not love me anymore? ;.; She knew better than to think such thoughts, but it was impossible for Celes not to think it. She loved Cyrus too much, they had been through so much all these years, and now--

She felt the strange sensation of weightlessness. Her eyes widened in terror. She instinctively kicked with her legs, struggling to reach firm ground. Instead of ground she connected with something else. It took her several half-seconds to process it, to process what she had just touched, to determine what was going on. In confused realization, she turned her head upwards.

There was Cyrus's face, only a few feet away. He held her in his arms like a cradled cat. She had been so absorbed in her thoughts that she hadn't even noticed his approach, hadn't noticed as he leaned in to pick her up off of the ground. He was walking forward again, holding Celes gently to his chest. She laid her head down upon it, looking up at her trainer.

"I told you," he said as he looked forward, "you don't have to worry." And then he looked down at Celes, his eyes pouring straight into hers. "Silly."

They walked like this the rest of the way. Celes hadn't been the least bit tired, but she dozed off in the gentle warmth of Cyrus's embrace.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Cyrus had never seen a castle in the clouds before. King's Castle seemed to live up to its name though. It towered above trainer and Pokémon, its size massive, its weight surely enormous; and yet it floated in the clouds as though it weighed nothing at all. The castle gates were open, and Cyrus helped himself into the castle interior. Celes had woken up by now and had asked to be let down; while she would've enjoyed staying put a little longer, a girl has her pride and Celes didn't want her soon-to-be opponent to see her in that state. She walked under her own power into the castle alongside Cyrus, taking in the architecture that paradoxically spoke of antiquity and recency in the same breath. The garden seemed well kept. There were no weeds or unwanted vines anywhere that she could see. Nothing about the stones seemed decrepit or in a state of neglect. But at the same time, she couldn't help but wonder as to the stones' age. Centuries? Millennia? She couldn't tell. Even if she were told the castle had only been built several years ago, Celes would swear that its style was inspired by the great castles of old.

Soon the referee for today's match came into view. Levin Sanders. He was not familiar to Celes, but Cyrus had heard the name before. It caught the tanned trainer off guard that his casual match with Hyrem was to be refereed by someone so well-known.

And just over there, there were Hyrem and Sera. As Cyrus approached, Levin called out:

"Cyrus, Hyrem, thank you for coming. I'm sure you're both eager to get started, so let's not waste any time!"

Cyrus continued his approach and shook hands with Hyrem. He was eager to catch up with a fellow trainer and did not hold back from asking Hyrem about his most recent adventures. Celes meanwhile stood by her trainer's leg in silence, taking in the beautiful but unfamiliar Pokémon that stood before her.

Levin explained to the two trainers the policies about King's Castle. About how they mustn't damage the architecture, about the castle guards, so on and so forth. Celes payed attention. She knew that it would be important to do her best to balance strength against delicacy.

As the trainers turned to walk to their respective ends of the arena, Cyrus looked down at Celes once more. "Celes?"

"Chika?"

"Knock their socks off."

It was exactly what she had wanted to hear -- even if Sera did not appear to wear any socks.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"If you find yourself afflicted by a status ailment, Celes, use Aromatherapy! (But only if!) When you have a clear opportunity, run up to the fountain and use Double Team!"
With pleasantries exchanged and both Trainers and Pokemon ready to kick things off, Levin took a deep breath and gave the signal: thus began the first battle of the 2015 and of the Saffron-native's referee career. Hopefully it'd go smoothly...

Both Hyrem and Cyrus start off conservatively; after all, the first orders were as much crucial as they were risky.
Having the slight speed advantage, Sera goes first. The second she lays eyes on Celes, she senses her Overgrow Ability and her own cells instantly adjust to imitate it when the time comes. She lets go of burdening thoughts and her focus tightens, increasing her mental and spiritual powers. As she does, Celes dashes up to the fountain at the center of the courtyard, hoping not to be struck down as she makes a run for it... but Sera has other plans.
Her eyes grow blue as she gazes into the future, not hers or Celes's but that of the match itself, wherein a massive energy burst promises to wreak havoc... soon.
Glad that the Kirlia didn't go on the offensive just yet, Celes takes the opening to create 2 copies of herself, all three Chikorita positioned around the Kingdra Fountain.
Unable to tell them apart for now, Sera follows Hyrem's instructions and instead mounts her own defense in the form of a translucent yellow shield that quickly fades from view, but Cyrus is experienced enough to know that the veil is very much in place, ready to filter any incoming special attacks aimed at the Psychic-Type before it shatters.

Both Pokemon have obviously taken no damage, though all the setup did cost them some energy. Future Sight has been summoned, and Sera's Light Screen is at full strength; on the other hand, the Kirlia now has to contend against Celes and two perfect Chikorita clones... Will sparks finally fly in the next round?

This is my first reffing and my first match; there will definitely be mistakes, so feel free to call me out on them. Don't ask me for specific percentages as that's for refs to know (and I'm still tweaking some of them), but feel free to ask any other questions you have. And above all have fun!
Talon, I reffed your Chikorita's Ability as Overgrow since that's the only ability it can have at this point in FB, and because Trace needs to trigger on something. If that's against your wishes and GS accepts it I can revert that, otherwise let's run with it for this match.

OoC: I don't mind using Overgrow in this battle if, as you state, it is only for the purposes of this battle and I am not officially being locked into anything. If locking in is going to happen, then I'll have to decline the request to go with Overgrow.

As Celes bounded towards Sera, ready to spread a sweet aroma through the arena if the need should have arisen, the mysterious Psychic type gazed at the Chikorita and ... Celes wasn't sure exactly what took place, but whatever it was, she was sure she didn't like it! Meanwhile, the slender ballerina showed little emotion on her face. It was calm, tranquil, placid. Sera seemed to be entering into a zen state of focus. And all of this had transpired in just a few seconds.

Celes quickened her step, making all haste for the fountain. But before she could reach it, Sera's eyes started to turn blue. "What is she up to now!?" Celes wondered. It seemed like it hadn't even been one minute since the match began and already Hyrem and Sera were in full control of it -- and Celes didn't even know what they had done. "This has go to stop," she thought to herself. And with that, Celes prepared to launch Cyrus's plans into motion.

Having reached the Kingdra Fountain, Celes came to a screeching halt, forelegs spread, head lowered. Summoning the energy from within, she began to focus her own thoughts. This was a technique that she and Cyrus had been practicing together. Now to see the fruits of their labor! Sera was left to watch as one Chikorita suddenly became two ... no wait, three! "This should slow her down," Celes and the shadow clones grinned. But the grin soon turned to a small grimace as she realized that it would take more than slowing her adversary down to win this. She needed to reverse the momentum -- and fast.

Sera still wasn't done, however, and mounted a translucent yellow shield around herself. While it quickly faded from view, Celes knew full well what it was.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

And so did Cyrus. "Light Screen." Cyrus knew all too well the fickleness of this move. While it promises its bearer great protection against certain kinds of attacks, against other kinds the shield instantly shatters like glass. In their battle at Mt. Aduro, Cyrus had ordered Celes to conjure up a Light Screen only for the shield to vanish mere seconds later when Gaspard, Celes's Aipom opponent, unleashed his Fury Swipes. It hadn't even taken the full attack to do it -- just that very first swipe had been enough to bring the entire screen tumbling down. It was partly the reason Cyrus had not opted to lead off with a Light Screen as he had done at Mt. Aduro. Too risky, too easily taken advantage of.

But the glowing blue eyes he had noted earlier concerned him. While he couldn't be sure of Hyrem's plans, Cyrus knew full well that Psychic types were generally trained in the special arts. This meant that whatever Sera might do, it was probably going to lean towards the special side of things. And that meant that whatever that blue-eyes attack had been ... it would probably be something that would require the protection of a Light Screen.

Doubts soon turned to excitement as Cyrus conceived of a plan to set Hyrem and Sera back several steps. "Celes!" he called forth. "I want you to Wring Out Sera's stamina! While she's busy dealing with this, fire off a Leech Seed! And then while she has that to contend with, play us a lovely melody -- a Grass Whistle, if you please!"

This was only the beginning, Cyrus knew. Anything could happen. But -- he hoped -- this would prove to be the decisive beginning of his counterattack.

{Sorry it's a little bit late, I'll try to be better about this in the future.}

As Sera studied her opponent in an effort to Trace the Chikorita's ability, Hyrem took the time to whip out his Pokedex to do some studying of his own:

Chikorita, the Leaf Pokemon. The leaf on a Chikorita's head serves many functions: it can help check the temperature and humidity of its current environment, and it can swing its leaf around to ward off attackers and spread its sweet-smelling aroma to calm them down. It is most likely encountered while it is sunbathing.

"So that's a Chikorita, huh?" Hyrem asked himself. At this time, Sera had finished copying Celes's Overgrow ability, which wouldn't be too helpful for her since, if she got below a third of her health, it would only boost her Magical Leaf attack, an attack they weren't planning on using against a Grass-type.

Still, it did make Celes nervous, from what Sera could gather by the aura she was reading around her, and this served to Calm the Kirlia; she knew she was in control, and the more Mind games she played with Celes, the better. So she focused her Sight on the Future, and she could see that in a short period of time Celes would be attacked by a large burst of psychic power. In the meantime, she set up a Light Screen to protect herself just in case Celes wanted to attack, but she didn't. Instead, she approached the fountain and cast Double Team to create clones of herself, all three of them set up around the fountain.

Celes is obviously trying to bait us into hitting the fountain, Hyrem thought. We better be careful with our next attacks, 'specially since Celes has the energy advantage. "Sera," Hyrem said out loud, "give Celes a Flash as she comes in to attack! Then fight back with Icy Wind and Confusion, but be careful not to hit that fountain!"

"Kirlia." Sera nodded. She had read the auras around the Arcanine and knew they would instantly be on her if her attacks were not on point. She would need to work her way around the fountain and focus one Chikorita at a time even with an area-of-effect attack like Icy Wind, but hopefully the attacks ordered wouldn't be too risky should they miss their mark.

ROUND 2

Both Trainers decide to go on the offense, after a careful first round! Celes and her two clones each extend two vines straight at Sera, intending to trap her and squeeze her as hard as possible - because the more fight she has in her, the more she'll wear herself out! Cyrus knows that Wring Out is most effective the more the opponent can still struggle, and as such is a perfect move to use at the start of a match. Deciding it's worth the energy it costs, he decides to take a chance by going first with the powerful (yet draining) move... but shouting instructions first comes with a price, as Hyrem is quick to come up with a potential counter!

Celes's eyes are locked on Sera to make sure she can wrap her vines around the Psychic-Type, in turn giving the Kirlia a precious opening to mount a defense - she brings her hands to her forehead and lets loose a blinding Flash, causing Celes to wince in pain as her eyes burn from the sudden burst of light!
The Chikorita tries her very hardest to keep her aim steady, flinging her vines at the blurry outline of her foe... and succeeds! Sera looks helplessly as Celes's appendages restrain her and start to squeeze tighter and tighter, forcing the air out of her lungs and putting immense strain on her muscles, no matter how hard she squirms to break free! Not only that, a shattering sound and millions of golden particles fill the air around Sera, indicating that the Light Screen itself broke under the intense pressure!

Celes keeps her grip as tight as she can, clearly a demanding task against the taller foe. However, Sera refuses to sit idly, and tries her hardest to mount a ranged offense through her predicament. She looks at the three Chikorita across the battlefield, surrounding the fountain, unable to tell who the oppressive vines belong to and which ones are mere illusions, so she opts not to choose at all: she summons a breeze of freezing wind right toward the group of Chikorita! The gust of air is a fine choice, as it blows over the arena and the fountain without causing any visible damage, but the cold is intense enough to affect the vulnerable Grass-Type and her illusions all at once, causing the former to wince in pain and the latter to vanish! Not only that, the sudden temperature drop causes Celes's already-strained muscles to cramp up, effectively making her slower.

Remembering Cyrus's instructions, Celes keeps her hold on Sera while taking aim, still practically blind after the previous Flash. A tiny seed materializes in front of her leaf, which Celes then hurls at her bound opponent, or at least what she can make out of her through the luminescent speckles that occupy most of her field of vision... and Cyrus rejoices as the attack finds its mark once again, landing on Sera's head!
As the seed blooms and thin, frail vines grow around the Psychic-Type, Celes finally releases her Wring Out, feeling the effects of having squeezed Sera for so long.
Quick to react, and no longer forced to guess who her target is, the Kirlia fights back with a weak wave of psy-energy, inducing an intense migraine on Celes that she still manages to shake off without lasting effects.

Realizing that her protective measures have been readily overcome for now - both the Double Team and the fountain decoy -, Celes falls back and decides to incapacitate Sera another way. Bending her leaf over to her mouth, she begins to play it like a flute, filling the courtyard with the gentle sound of her Grass Whistle tune. Sera, hurting all over from the terrible Wring Out and pretty much powerless to cover her ears, bound by Leech Seed, can do little to protect herself. The melody soothes her, instilling a false sense of security that would quickly have grown into a state of drowsiness and then slumber, if not for Sera having previously boosted her focus with Calm Mind. With it, she is able to temporarily resist the hypnotic effect of Grass Whistle for now, but the longer she listens to it, the harder it will be to remain awake - Hyrem better act fast, especially since the round ends with a single vine of Leech Seed burying into the ground and transferring some health from the already-injured Kirlia over to the Chikorita!

Health: 82%
Energy: 66%
Stats: Acc -1, Spd -1

Health: 70%
Energy60%

The intensity picked up in this round, and both Pokemon dealt and suffered damage. Both worked around the other's defensive measures, indicating Hyrem and Cyrus are indeed very capable Trainers - and it's making for an exciting match!

As always, PM me any questions. With so many variables in play, I might've overlooked some.
Talon: I have no power to make anything official. Overgrow is in effect for this match only.

{I had written some RP for this, but it got eaten, so I'll just RP the orders for this post.}

"Come on, Sera, stay awake! Try to Disable the Grasswhistle attack, maybe Celes will have to stop and you won't fall asleep! If you're still awake, try to free yourself from the Leech Seed with Magical Leaf, then use Brain Freeze to try to slow Celes down even more!"

{RP text to come}

"Celes! Run towards one of the rose bushes and delicately crawl underneath it! Once you're there, summon a Light Screen to shield yourself! Then just close your eyes and take a breather!" Cyrus hoped that Celes would be able to shake off the effects of that blinding light, though he knew time was not on his side.

OoC: RP body of text will come later today. I have to leave for work shortly and had to work all last night as well. Thought I could finish the RP text this morning but ... *sigh* Anyway, orders will be unchanged from what you see here; post in its current form will be quote-replied to in the FBTO for proof's sake.

ROUND 3

Sera retains a clear speed advantage, but finds herself quite unable to take advantage of it. Bound helplessly by Celes's Leech Seed, and slowly entranced by her hypnotic tune, the only thing she can do is try to disrupt the Chikorita's strategy. She prepares to Disable her Grasswhistle as it echoes across the courtyard, but in a rather sudden change of heart, Celes abandons the technique entirely and runs away to hide beneath a rose bush, despite her foe's predicament!

Celes's movements are hampered by the previous Icy Wind, its effects still lingering and cramping up her leg muscles, but she makes it over to the bushes with little difficulty. She lowers her head and tries to call underneath, as carefully as she can, but several small thorns still graze her skin during the attempt.

Meanwhile, with no melody left to cancel, all that Sera can do now is turn her attention to the vines that bind her. She channels her Grass energy and releases a spiral of rainbow leaves from her body, which easily slice the thin roots apart along the way, effectively getting her rid of Leech Seed! And due to the magical nature of the move, the leaves themselves seek out their foe, homing in on the slow-moving Chikorita as she attempts to find cover. Several leaves make contact with her hind legs, slashing away at Celes - in fact, some of the sharper-edged projectiles slice the same spot consecutively, causing a critical hit! However, they still end up causing reduced damage on impact due to the Chikorita's natural affinity for Grass moves.

After a while she finally manages to conceal herself under the rose bush, though far from unscathed, and summons her own psychic veil to cover her for added protection. Sera still attempts to use her special "freezing poison" technique in the form of a wave of Brain Freeze crystals, but they fail to penetrate the foliage and soon fade away from the bush's surface.

It's then that the entire arena is swept by a gentle breeze, shortly before a thundering sound echoes across the sky and an energy sphere of massive proportions comes crashing down from the heavens! Celes might as well be standing on a pedestal; the psychic pulse was already locked on her the moment Future Sight was summoned, so the rose bush did little to conceal her presence... though it still proves a welcome, albeit really minor, buffer as the giant orb makes descends further, ravaging the ground around it in a massive explosion that is only somewhat contained by the Chikorita's timely Light Screen! The damage to the Grass-type itself was reduced, but the area around it not so much - and because of all the commotion, the guardian Arcanine emerges from its resting place to survey the Palace grounds. Finding them heavily damaged, it delivers swift, angry retribution in the form of a Flamethrower attack that engulfs Sera dealing collateral, yet considerable pain! The hound returns to its station, still furious, and the match resumes after an interesting round that was slow to get started but ended with a bang!

Celes's eyesight has cleared after the shut-eyed breather beneath the bush, which has been completely incinerated by Future Sight, leaving the Chikorita exposed again. The Arcanine is angry, so be extra careful going forward!
As a side-note, remember to read the official descriptions before ordering, because some of them are still very different from the games, likely due to occasional oversights! (for instance, Disable)

"Celes! Race towards Sera and fire another Leech Seed! Then unleash your Secret Power upon her! Do it again!"

OoC: RP body of text will come later. Same idea as before. In case it's not clear, orders are 1) Leech Seed, 2) Secret Power, and 3) a second use of Secret Power.

As Sera stood bound by the Leech Seed, she tried to Disable Celes in an attempt to lock her movement in place and disrupt the Grasswhistle attack, but it didn't matter once the Chikorita decided to hide under a bush and throw up her own Light Screen. Hyrem figured Sera's next attack featuring a cluster of Freezing crystals would be able to bypass the barrier and go for the Brain, but it didn't even get past the bush Celes was hiding behind, much less the Light Screen. What did get past the brush was the Future Sight attack Sera set up earlier, but the damage was reduced, of course, thanks to the defensive barrier containing the explosion.

Unfortunately, the damage was not reduced on the fountain and the area around it, and the Arcanine guarding the place awoke from its slumber. "Sera, look out!" Hyrem warned as the particularly large dog jumped right next to Sera, looming over her with a vicious look before it exhaled a powerful Flamethrower attack on her. "Kirliaaaa!!" she cried out in pain and unconsciously threw waves of colors at Hyrem as he too could feel the heat...from the inside of his own body and mind. He clutched his head, surprised at what just happened. Did...did I just feel that? he thought. What's going on? I didn't feel anything when Sera was attacked before...why now? He shook his head and forced himself to shrug it off for now; there was still a battle to concentrate on, and Celes had been able to use the distraction to take a break and shake off the effects of Sera's Flash from earlier.

"Sera, play defensive for this round! Dodge the Leech Seed, then throw up a Reflect to help you take Celes's attacks before taking a break of your own to restore your energy!"

ROUND 4

Celes has nowhere left to run, and Cyrus knows it. Despite still reeling from the devastating Future Sight (mercifully softened by her timely Screen), the Chikorita herself yearns for retribution, and her Trainer seems to think the same - this time, it's Celes's turn to put the hurt on her opponent!
Meanwhile, Sera has just recovered from the unexpected Flamethrower. She reminds herself to be more careful down the line, because it tainted what was otherwise a great round for her Trainer... Despite her speed advantage, Hyrem has Sera hold her ground for now - clearly troubled by the shared pain he just experienced, this round should provide Sera time to gather energy and himself time to gather his thoughts...

Sera watches as the Chikorita dashes toward her, carefully watching her movements - still slower than normal, but steadily picking up the pace as Icy Wind's effects start to fade. Heightened senses and a nimbler body allow the Kirlia to carry out Hyrem's instructions, narrowly dodging the Leech Seed with is lunged at her mid-run. However, thanks to her running start, Celes is able to keep going and ram her pink-glowing body into the unprepared Sera, who had just finished evading the draining move! Faint electric-like sparkles run across the target's body, akin to Thunder Wave, but then just seem to fade harmlessly with no side-effects after all.
Sera is quick to recover, and just as Celes turns back around for a second strike, the Kirlia throws her hands forward and summons a violet wall that immediately vanishes from sight. But when her opponent lunges at her again, the shield glimmers briefly on contact, allowing Celes to pass through it but notably reducing her momentum. Again surrounded by a pink aura, the Chikorita slams her tiny frame into the slender Psychic-Type, dealing further damage, although reduced by the Reflect barrier. This time however, the pink sparks that cover Kirlia seem to lock up her muscles... Sera has been paralyzed by the second Secret Power!
Remembering the utmost need to conserve her strength, the Psychic-Type tries to loosen up and takes a welcome breather, but afflicted by this new predicament, how much good will it do?...

Celes is no longer feeling the chilling effects of Icy Wind, having had plenty of time and activity to warm back up. Sera remains protected by her Reflect veil, which is intact; Celes's Light Screen is also up but barely hanging on after the massive blast it helped block the round before.

It turned out that playing defensively was a call with mixed results. On one hand, Sera dodged a Leech Seed that would've sapped her health away and put the fight further in Cyrus's favor, and her Reflect helped reduce another attack against her. On the other hand, Sera was now at a big health disadvantage because she didn't deal any damage back, and even worse, the second blow dealt to her had a Secret Power attached with it that Paralyzed her! As her muscles began to lock up, Hyrem also felt a tingling sensation shoot down his spine and both arms, and he inhaled sharply at the sudden pain it caused. It happened again! came the thought to his mind. What's going on here!?

Forced to ignore the situation once again, he hastily gave his orders to Sera: "Use Imprison so Celes can't use Light Screen again, then fire two Signal Beams at her!" Sera was concerned, not only about her own paralysis, but about the feelings she was sensing in Hyrem as well. How come he was feeling the same pain she was? ...For now, she had to push these thoughts to the back of her own mind like Hyrem was doing; there would be time to figure things out after the battle.

OoC: Sorry for lateness. Been a very busy week and just got back home, a little later than expected.

{RP text to come}

OoC: RP body of text will come later. Same idea as before x2. Basic gist of the orders this turn:
1. Cyrus orders Celes to use another Secret Power.

2. Cyrus orders Celes to run and duck for cover behind the fountain in the center of the courtyard.

3. Cyrus orders Celes to emerge from her hiding spot and to fire off another Leech Seed at Sera.

ROUND 5

Sera feels every muscle in her body contract unnaturally under the effect of electrical-induced paralysis, but she doesn't need to move at all to read Celes's mind and mentally nullify the Light Screen she is so familiar with herself. The Imprison causes Celes no pain at all, but it's as if part of her memory is suddenly erased...
Enraged at the sudden invasion of her very thoughts, the Chikorita - still feeling perturbed by Sera's unsettling display of mental prowess - looks to exact revenge with the same move that tilted the scales in her favor the round before! She runs up to the impaired Kirlia and once more rams her tiny frame into the Psychic-Type for further damage!
She then suddenly turns back around and makes a run for the fountain at the center of the arena, and despite her plan being blatantly obvious (especially since her foe has already felt the wrath of Arcanine), Sera still hopes to move fast enough to strike her while her back is turned! Summoning all of her strength, she tries her hardest to raise both of her arms in order to fire the Signal Beam... but to no avail! Her body locks up completely, and Celes successfully reaches the fountain for cover! Luck clearly isn't on Sera's side right now...

Celes sees an opportunity to fight back while her foe is dominated by paralysis; she shapes yet another seed of grass energy and emerges from behind the fountain to throw it at Sera! The Psychic-Type, meanwhile, was waiting for Celes to reveal herself while she waited for her muscles to free themselves, and the second she spots her enemy she once again tries to fire a Signal Beam, before Celes disappears back behind the fountain... and this time her body moves!!
Just as Celes hurls the Leech Seed through the air, Sera capitalizes on the briefly-exposed opponent, and with her body willing to cooperate this time, she unleashes a rainbow beam that homes in on Celes! The Chikorita dives back down for cover as instructed, but not quick enough as she was surprised by Sera's sudden recovery. The Beam connects with the leaf atop her head at the exact same time that Leech Seed lands on Sera and blooms into the familiar energy-sapping vines!

Sera is completely wrapped once again and health is sapped from her and transferred through the ground back to Celes, just like before. The Chikorita, meanwhile, is reeling from the hit to her sensitive leaf, and is forced to watch as her protective veil finally crumbles into ethereal dust...

The round ends with Sera trapped in another Leech Seed, but still protected by a cracked Reflect shield, and Celes well hidden behind the fountain but finally lacking the protection of her Light Screen, with no means to summon another.

{RP text to come}

OoC: RP body of text will come later. Same idea as before x3. Basic gist of the orders this turn:
1. Cyrus orders Celes to try to hide behind the statue with Sera on the opposite side until she can tell the Leech Seed has been broken. Do not attack Sera directly while Leech Seed is on.

2. If/Once the Leech Seed is broken through, use Secret Power once again.

3. If a third order slot remains and iff Sera has broken out of Leech Seed, Cyrus orders Celes to use Secret Power once more.
Obviously adjust for turn fairness.

{Gonna be fairly busy today, so I'll just post orders, sorry for lateness.}

"Sera! We have to stop the seed on you, so let's do it with another Magical Leaf! Then hide on a different side of the fountain from Celes and make her attack you. See if you can lure her into a pointblank Signal Beam from there! Good luck!"

ROUND 6

The battlers are starting to feel the effects of the prolonged match, due to the highly tactical approach of their Trainers. Celes moves first again, with Sera struggling with both the Leech Seed and her lingering paralysis. She dashes towards the Kingdra fountain at the center of the arena, trying to create some separation between her and the kirlia and hopefully force more damage on the arena that would result in further punishment for Hyrem's partner (and, as it seems, himself as well).

Sera employs the same strategy as before, knowing the razor-sharp edges of her Magical Leaf can easily slice through the draining vines. She channels her Grass Energy again, only to find a considerably larger number of rainbow leaves emerge from her body than before - courtesy of her Traced Overgrow ability! Paralysis doesn't stop her movements this time, and the Leech Seed is ripped to shreds by the barrage of leaves - which proceed to fly through the air and, thanks to her magical properties, twist and turn before homing in on the hiding - yet stationary - Celes! Some fall in the fountain water or collide with the Kingdra statue, making Hyrem wince at the perspective of damaging it; however, by some stroke of luck, no leaves slash away the rock, so Sera's safe in that regard. Several other grass blades go around the fountain, carried by the breeze, and find their mark, grazing the Chikorita's skin and causing her further discomfort, despite her native type, due to Sera's Overgrow and Calm Mind boosts.

Celes seeks retribution as per Cyrus's instruction, now that Leech Seed has been predictably broken and no further benefits wil lcome from it. She dashes around the fountain and towards the Kirlia on the opposite side; Sera tries to react, thanks to Hyrem having expected a close-range strike, but her muscles take too long to get going again, allowing the Chikorita to score another hit with her Secret Power - thankfully softened by her Reflect veil, which crumbles into dust after buffering Celes's latest bodyslam.
Sera temporarily loses her balance but keeps her footing, and tries to capitalize on Celes's proximity to fire off a point-blank Signal Beam. Her arms feel like they're made of lead, and she struggles to aim at the Chikorita... but yet again her body refuses to obey, letting a major opportunity for heavy damage slip by as she locks up completely once more...

Tough luck once more for Sera, and again Celes capitalizes with what seems to be Cyrus's go-to attack - she rams her small frame into the already-paralyzed Sera, although this time, there is no more Reflect to soften the blow, causing the Kirlia to feel the full impact of the move. She trips and falls over this time, her weakened legs giving in to the brute force of the attack... and she's not getting back up!

Hyrem holds his breath. Sera is on the ground, motionless, with a heavy-breathing Celes standing tall. It seems victory belongs to Cyrus, and Levin prepares to dictate the sentence... until the Kirlia raises one arm, then the other, and struggles heavily back to her feet in an unbelievable display of resiliency! Sera, somehow, is still standing! Miraculously, the match isn't over yet, but the next round might be the last...

Even more bad luck came to Hyrem and Sera as the paralysis still prevented her from doing anything meaningful, and Hyrem could feel it every time it did so. What was more interesting was that these feelings started to fade as he could see Sera about to lose consciousness but miraculously retain it. Could it be...?

"Sera, I think this battle is going to be over soon, but let's go down fighting! Keep using Signal Beam until you drop, maybe we can get a good crit on Celes and turn it around at the end!"

ROUND 7

This has been an intense, highly strategic match. Both Trainers and their respective Pokemon were savvy enough to make the most of their surroundings, and showcased their skills both in tactical sense and sheer power. And now, after a long and intense battle of strength and wits, it's obvious to both Cyrus and Hyrem that the bout is at last coming to an end. Sera and Celes have given it their all, and have certainly made their Trainers proud.

Sera's vision is blurry, her body hurts all over but her fighting spirit is still burning. Celes is considerably worn out as well, breathing heavily but fairing better than her foe. It all comes down to this...
The Kirlia is still under the paranormal effects of the Secret Power that has troubled her so much for the second half of the bout; however, Sera is beginning to adjust to the feeling, and manages to raise her arms faster than before, this time unimpeded by paralysis, and focuses her remaining energy for one last barrage of Signal Beams.
Meanwhile, Celes takes aim and causes two vines to grow from the blossoms around her neck; the grass ropes extend to cover the distance between the two foes at the same time that Sera fires off her rainbow blast!

The beam, made of pure energy, moves slightly faster and finds its mark first, washing over Celes in a highly effective hit - a split-second before the weaker, but less demanding Vine Whips strike their own target, ramming into Sera!
Both Pokemon fall over, thoroughly drained. And for almost two minutes, it seems as if neither is getting back up, but Zion mentally asks Levin to hold his judgment a little longer due to the readings it's picking up...

Finally, both Pokemon move at the same time! Mirroring the previous round, Sera slowly raises her arms in an attempt to get back up; Celes, meanwhile, raises her leaf in the air and tries to get back on all fours, legs shaking madly in the attempt...
... until the Kirlia drops back down, motionless, and the Chikorita manages to stand back up! This one's over - Cyrus and Celes win the match!!

Well guys, that was quite the match! I made a couple of mistakes along the way and I'm really sorry for those last-minute changes in some of rounds, but I hope you still had fun. I'll get better with time so I hope I can ref for you again soon!

It was a really strategic match; it made for some complicated rounds with many factors coming into play, and I think you both made good use of the tools you had at your disposal in an arena that can get somewhat tricky to move around!

Talon, congratulations for the victory! Grass-Types aren't easy to use, especially pure ones, and you made the most of Celes's skills throughout the match. I think you made the most of the arena to your advantage, although from a "flavor" perspective I would've liked to see some different moves in the second half rather than all those Secret Powers, but admittedly they were what got you the victory and Chikorita's movepool is pretty shallow to begin with. You proved yourself an excellent strategist and the victory was well earned!

GS, you put up a valiant effort but you came up just short! Paralysis was a thorn on your side that prevented several Signal Beams from sealing the deal for you, not to mention the area damage from that Future Sight that earned you a Flamethrower... All in all it was an even match but Talon took the firm lead at midpoint and Sera was unfortunate not to catch up since. Great showing, and I liked the bits of RP that hint at something strange happening between you and your Starter! ^^

Cheers guys, thanks for putting up with my mistakes and I look forward to reffing for you again!

Good game, GS! And thanks to you, MarbleZone, for making it possible. Sorry that I wasn't able to commit to the RP side of things as much as I had wanted to. I still plan to come back to this battle in the future (hopefully the very near future!) for Celes's character development. I hope that in failing to follow through on my RP goals I didn't inhibit either one of you from accomplishing your own goals for this match.

But for now ...

Raising Celes's level from 74 to 76.

Collecting Celes's Advanced Trainer Battle Trophy.

{Yeah, thanks for this battle, guys! I learned quite a bit from this battle about Sera and how flawed her current movepool is. First, she has a lot of powerful moves at her disposal, but they all cost her so much energy that she can't really keep up in a sustained fight; it's either she bursts her opponent down, or she loses steam very quickly. Second, she doesn't have Safeguard yet, and that's my fault for not teaching it to her sooner; it's a move that absolutely fits her, and it would've been the move that blocked paralysis AND the second Leech Seed completely, which would've made for a very different match. Lastly, I will admit that I made mistakes with my strategy: I was so focused on doing a Mimic/Imprison combo in order to steal a move away from Celes, but I couldn't find a good opportunity to do so. The correct call should have been to Imprison Celes's Light Screen away from the start so she couldn't use it to block Sera's Special-only movepool, but then again I wasn't sure if Imprison would only be a temporary effect or would last the entire battle...when that probably wouldn't have even mattered if Sera had been able to ignore Celes's defenses and burst her down like I mentioned before. So yeah, I feel like I was the one who made mistakes, and Talon was able to punish me for them. GG, Talon!}

It actually came closer than anyone thought, but the stress of the battle was too much for Sera in the end, and she went down, unable to fire one more Signal Beam to turn it around.

Meanwhile, Hyrem could feel Sera's presence in his mind disappear as she fell unconscious, but the idea of feeling the same pain Sera felt was still very disturbing to him. Overall, both trainer and partner still had a lot to learn, about battling and about this strange, new power they had with each other.

"You all right, Sera?" Hyrem asked his Kirlia as he gently scooped up her frail body into his arms. "Kirlia..." she gave a fairly weak reply, looking back at him with eyes barely open. "Don't worry, we'll go to the Pokemon Center nearby, and you'll feel a lot better. Sorry I failed you this time..." He then approached the winners still holding Sera in his arms. "That was a good battle, Cyrus! I guess I'm still not ready to battle the best yet... But thanks for giving me the chance! You too, Celes!" he said to the Chikorita as he held his hand out for the chance to pat her on the head. He'd have a lot to think about in the near future, but for now he figured he and Sera could use this time to relax.

Kirlia gained 1 XP!
