If anyone is looking for freelance web development, coding kind of work and is half decent at it, a place I used to work for is putting a contract out to tender and I know the manager really well.
PM me if you're interested. |

Procrapstination: my new word for procrastinating from the important but tedious and complicated stuff you have to do by fixing the thing it turns out you fucked up last week.

Quick check: Is $20000 per year enough for one person to live in New York?
Sure, I can use external sources on the Internet to get a rough estimate, but I prefer someone with personal experience. You may have any assumptions, although I am only really concerned about basic things such as rent+food+travel. Also, I don't necessarily need to take this offer, hence I'm considering and asking here. |

That's a pretty small amount for living most places - you could live comfortably but far from luxuriously in a college town or moderate sized city but a big city like New York would be really highly variable and more than likely expensive.

Those jobs are missing out Kush, I hope you'll land a great one soon!
So for the past few weeks I've been working for a Japanese fast-ish food restaurant called Kyoto that's on campus! My feet hurt a lot, but the people are nice and I'm enjoying it *nod* |

I need more income. I'm working full time but it's not enough, I still feel like I'm wasting time. And I feel bad putting in numbers for overtime.

Bahahaha interview feedback "you were a really close second but you came across as a bit jaded and cynical".
I full on laughed down the phone at this. |

I am now a parking flagger at Gillette Stadium. My first two events involve drunk soccer fans and rabid Taylor Swift fans. This is better than my other job at McDonalds though which makes me want to hurt people.

So July 27th is literally the shittiest day of work I've ever had. Because someone shit on the bathroom floors. Fuck. It was an absolute mess. I almost want to quit.

Cover letters are such a pile of wank. Advice I've been given by the careers people boils down to a) anything relevant should already be emphasised on a CV tailored for the job, b) don't repeat your CV in your cover letter and c) keep the cover letter relevant and specific. Net result I have literally nothing to write in cover letters beyond "hey here's my CV, thanks for looking at it!"

Why does that specific job at that specific company appeal to you?
Why would you add value to the company/team? Your last paragraph should say thanks for reading and I look forward to demonstrating my awesomeness at the interview stage. |

My mother dragged me to a job searching seminar thing and the people there basically said just use your cover letter to load up on a bunch of stuff that pulls in why you're a good fit for the position and basically address major points of the application. That way, once your resume is thrown into the digital pile, the computer will bring it to the top since you've pulled in all the keywords they're looking for.

I put in my two weeks resignation last Thursday, as I realized that nursing school is getting insanely time-consuming! I'm sad to go because no money, but also very relieved that I don't have to work anymore during days where I really shouldn't work anyway xd;

Been offered a promotion to team leader at work. Will take a few months to go through all the training stuff but still pretty stoked given I've only been there a couple months.

How far are you in the program? Are you going for say, a RN, or going further for the NP?

So I was thinking about getting a second job a few months down the road, and what better way to hone my culinary skills than to become a cook? I looked up a posting at my city's homeless shelter:
"Minimum two years experience" WOW THOSE HOBOS SURE ARE PICKY HUH?

So people with many more years of experience than myself at this, help someone who is pretty much entirely new to the workforce get a job.
Or at least off me as much advice as you can. I have no idea what I'm doing and it scares me.

So entrance into the early workforce nowadays is a lot harder than it was a decade ago. This is less because of availability of jobs and more just because a lot of employers have gotten a bit more stringent with how they hire. Overall your best bet easily is to find a job through someone you know. References into a new workplace will carry wonders over being just another name in the application pile. Outside of that, if you want to get a lot of experience in different things and have a fair bit of credibility to your name (provided you actually do your job well, obviously) for down the line, and money itself isn't a 100% immediate issue for the purposes of rent, food, etc, then going through a temp agency in your area will do you wonders. You just tell them what you're good at or what you want to do, and they'll set you up with the slew of companies they contract to. Do good work and you'll get more frequent contracts.
Outside of that, something people don't really tend to consider with jobs is when to move away from the one they currently have. A good rule of thumb is when you feel things have stagnated, when you feel like there's nothing more for you to learn and nothing more your employer seems to want to teach you. Generally this takes about 6 months to a year at most jobs but can be longer depending on where you go. After you've reached this point, start looking around for other jobs while obviously still staying where you are. Eventually you'll find something that pays just a bit better than what you're currently at. This is the generally preferred approach for the early workforce, staying just long enough that you won't be seen as someone who leaves their jobs too quickly, but not so long that you just get weighed down at a dead end job. |
