Porygon-Z Staff Rewards Update!

Alright, now with word counts officially wrapped up, we want to segway into Staff Rewards. Staff rewards are directly tied into that discussion, but warranted enough of a change to need their own thread.

So, the big three things we want to address are is the ladder itself, the names of tiers, and the custom move/item reward. Here is the old list as a reference:

Spoiler: show

FC Milestones:
-\/- 250 Pokedollars Each Step

300 FC = Custom Item / Move - You propose an item or move to collect for yourself. Mods must approve of the effects. Be reasonable but do something cool!

First and foremost, the ladder desperately needs work. Once you reach around 100 to 150 FC, the same rewards become monotonous and really unmotivating to get through. Especially since you have to pull through things to get access to stuff like the Silver Umbra Coin, which is currently the only big exclusive before the 250 FC tier. We want to try and diversify the ladder from that point onwards and want community suggestions on how to update it.

Here is a proposed list of current changes. If the Ability Capsule is implemented, it will be added into the ladder at an appropriate spot

300 FC = Custom Item / Move - You propose an item or move. If it is a custom move, also an item to learn it. Mods must approve of the effects. Be reasonable but do something cool!

Next of all, we feel that new tiers shouldn't be named after members, especially since it can leave a bad taste in someone's mouth. We want to propose renaming the currently established tiers to things the community can agree on, as well as make it so all future tier names need community approval before being implemented.

Lastly, we want it so all custom moves and items created will be available to the public. That was the intent when Emi wrote Staff Rewards back in 2017 and was the impression it made. All previously created Custom Moves and Items will stay exclusive to their creators, but all going forward will be made publicly available.

With those three points out of the way, we want to specify that WE WILL NOT BE RESETTING FC. Resetting Staff currency is a big way to demotivate and even kill updaters. Mass resets are something that should not be imposed on the community. If a member wishes to do so themselves, that is their decision.

Also, we are working on a little special something to add to the ladder called Zone Eggs. We worked with the available ZAs/Zone Creators for these zones, and did our best for the zones that the creators/ZAs are not currently available. You can view the lists here in this google document. We will also be looking to implement these into the hatchery at a later point if the community likes them.

Along with this, we want to address bi-monthly rewards. The obvious proposal is adding in the SIlver Umbra Coin to either the 5 or 10 update tiers. Besides that, just diversifying the pool is something we would like to do.

So, all of these stages are functionally the same up to the 250 mark, right? Why not just have it written once and then say that it loops back through this reward set every 50 points until 250, after which it moves to the final bits? It's huge and mildly daunting.

Zone Eggs, I don't hugely mind either way but is two egg pools per zone really necessary?

There are some differences in reward tiers are 200 and 250. The list is a bit larger than before, but it is always good to remind people of the options they have.

As for Zone Eggs, we wanted to give a variety of groups for Pokemon, and a lot of zones have different areas that limiting to one egg really doesn't encapsulate the entirety of the zone.

Multiple egg pools per zone is largely just because we did want to try to make most mon available through said eggs and also didn't want eggs to have 50 'mon in them, so we chose themes for each zone that could be a bit of a duality with eachother.

Once again, I'm not going to say much about this because of my inexperience with Staff Rewards (in fact, I just had to take a little crash course on it after getting 10 FC thrown my way), however I do want to chip in and say that all of these changes look fine to me.

I do have a couple questions about Zone Eggs, though. I'm curious as to how they'll be given to members: will they be given out based on user choice, chosen randomly, or will they be based on the zones that they're updating in? While I'm 90% sure that we're going down the user choice route, if it's the latter then what if someone who reaches that tier doesn't update any zones?

1. Create an item is definitely the coolest thing on the list, but man is 300 a daunting number. When I updated I had 2 goals, a silver umbra and a custom item. But after I got through 50 updates and getting my Umbra I quickly got discouraged and ended up stopping updating in general with how far I had left to go for the only other reward I really cared about. Not saying it should necessarily be changed but wanted to voice how my experience went.

2. Don’t have any issue with changing the names changed and to be approved by the community at large.

3. No issues with this. Maybe (going forward with the new ones of course) the already created items can be added into the lower reward tiers? Like at 150 (or halfway through) you can claim one of the custom items/moves that have already been made? (Unless the intent is to have them be as common as the other hold items or moves in which case never mind)

Other than that I like the zone eggs and like the silver umbra being added to bi-monthlies.

Agreeing with the tier name changes and general additions, though I'm not sure how I feel about Zone Eggs as a whole. Especially with Zones closing constantly soon, I feel it could run into the same problem of leaving a bad taste? *shrug*

So, somewhat tangentially I am once again going to propose something radical, which is to limit some of the coolest prizes to/make them much easier to obtain by Updators only. If we really want to incentivize Updating I feel there needs to be some sort of big exclusive draw (that also isn't too far out of reach). Speaking honestly as a SO who sometimes feels she can just take it easy by letting FC accumulate through a steady weekly stream for far less effort, I do think there needs to be some kind of counter to this mindset. I know this is also sorta contradictory to my initial advocation for Type Eggs to be added to the regular Rewards Ladder, but I'm talking big ticket items like creating Custom Items, Moves, Abilities(?) etc. Heck, toss a Fizzytopian Essence in there. (I would even go so far to say include Silver Umbras and Shiny Sprays on this list.) Whatever people would find most enticing to motivate them to try Updating on for size.

For naming changes why not go with like Pokemon trainer classes? Stuff like Youngster, Ace Trainer, Gym Leader, Frontier Brain, Elite Four etc?

EDIT: it might lead to confusion with the existing Gym stuff maybe if at least Gym Leader is used?

Existing Custom Items were options at 200 and 250 but seem to have gotten removed when this was pushed public somehow.

User choice, though they also exist as say, a potential zone reward.

I think Iron's point here is actually pretty good, these are largely the same tier over and over again. I know that one of the complaints about the ladder was how samey everything felt, so I think looking into either intensifying the rewards maybe every 100 FC or adding further diversity higher up is a good thing. 100 FC and 200 FC could also have a bigger reward than other tiers in order to keep people wanting to update.

I'm all for renaming the tiers as well.

Not gonna lie, I always did have this idea of naming whatever tier I might end up being the first to reach something like "Missingno. Master's Marvelous Minions" lol. Or something with similar alliterative quality, you get the picture. But yeah, being serious, I can kinda get wanting to do away with that practice.

Other thoughts- part of me kinda wants to see a Master Ball in there somewhere, but if that's gotta have a whole other discussion or something, then that's fine, just figured it'd be a pretty fitting reward for the higher FC thresholds.

And agreed on making the rewards steadily better instead of looping the exact same thing over and over again.

Preface: I've only been around for 3 or so months and have never held any staff position in the game. Obviously, I'm not as familiar as others on the existing issues with staff rewards.

What does grab my attention and as others have pointed out: the ladder seems quite repetitive and getting up to the interesting items might take too long or be too daunting? I'm not too sure about the accrual rate of FC.

Going off of what LBC said regarding making rewards that incentivize updating could be a good idea. Honestly at one point I personally looked at how much FC people get for updating and working shops and thought that if I really wanted to, I could probably just work a shop and still accrue FC at probably a good rate. Theoretically, updating can allow for faster accrual if updator and updatee are on a roll, but historically it doesn't seem to be the case (perhaps there are other reasons for this)?

Wrapping the following in a spoiler tag because it doesn't pertain to Lit's initial post but still related to staff rewards that I'm mostly curious about:

Spoiler: show

As an aside, I peeped the intro post in the Staff Rewards thread and it lists RPing confirmation updates in the Hatchery and Adoption Centre as FC rewardable. Is this still valid or a relic of a bygone era? I ask because it is my understanding that we cannot claim bond/cash for adoption or hatching posts but perhaps it's different for shop owners?

The original idea was to make it more of a ramp-up, I just kind of shoved stuff everywhere since some people might've wanted that instead. This is a preliminary list, and stuff can be trimmed based on how much FC you're at.

For some reason, the Custom Items weren't showing even so I added them in before moving this so I readded them at 200 and 250 FC.

So, I think it's worth revisiting the previous discussion held on Staff/Updator Rewards (the OP links it but for reference this is also what the old Staff Prize Shop looked like). Much of it echoes my own sentiment that we need to be rewarding Updators first and foremost for their efforts in supporting the game. This is of course not to diminish the work SOs put in - I know firsthand it can still be quite a task to keep track of the many posts and numbers required for bookkeeping and I still struggle to do so accurately. (For the record I actually had no idea when I volunteered to take on the Daycare initially that I could even claim FC for it, and carried on unawares for quite a while lol.)

Personally I think I'd prefer if we could return to a "shop" prize system, much like the Watt Shop or FFF ticket exchange. It's a lot more customizable, and as someone who really only cares about Eggs and the occasional Shiny Spray at this point, I'd much rather convert Candies/Cash + other trinkets towards more big name items. It'd be easy to scale more in favor towards Updators as well by just marking certain rewards as available to Updators only.

Honestly I wouldn't be averse to updates returning like, 2-3FC or completing an adventure giving a block of like 10FC.

While I do agree with a lot of this in no small capacity, I do want to state that we are unfortunately already quite a bit down the rabbit hole of the current system, as it were, and any and all major system changes would require that we take into account the people who have been climbing these ladders for ages now in an attempt to reach the higher end prizes.

Full resets of prize point accumulation will absolutely not be allowed as that sort of thing is the singular biggest killer of motivation for anyone who has put in any amount of effort.

It is technically still possible for those RP shop updates to make claims, but speaking as the person who used to do the RP updates for the Hatchery, it was never worth it for the SO so it stopped happening.

I really just don't like the idea of a shop in general; shops inherently require a lot of oversight and linking which are things I think we genuinely do need to get away from.

I do think that maybe the grand prize being 300 was ambitious, but that's why I also suggested some kind of other grand prize at 100 and 200.

I also don't really want to devalue the work SOs do right now either. Bimonthly rewards can probably fill in for updator incentive instead of the main ladder.

The problem with Bimonthlies IMO is that it really puts more pressure on slower-paced Updators (like myself). It's honestly demotivating in itself that the only way to get some of the bigger prizes is to push myself to Update a certain amount within a limited set timeframe, which is a major incentive killer. This is why I advocated for Type Eggs being added to the regular Rewards Ladder, since it's something I could work towards in the background without the weight of a strict deadline.

I'm in full support for this honestly. 2 FC per update and 10FC for Adventure completion. It realistically cuts.the ladder in half without compromising those who have already put in a massive amount of effort to climb it, and it also has a .ajor reward in stire for people who do.finisb adventures. Though, 10 might be abusable so I rather trial an adidtional 5 FC, especially paired with 2 FC per update.

I do think that Bimonthlies should be looked at more, imo, but I do think that a baseline of "you should be able to update an adventure every two months" is not only fairly realistic, but also very reasonable. An average adventure of 15 updates would take two and a half years to finish in total...which to be honest, feels really bad to think about.

I understand there are slower paced updators, and I think it should be adjusted to be more fair to them, but I also think that we should also give rewards to people who do update more often...they're really important to keeping the game going.

I think the rewards ladder should include many different rewards so that there is always consistent access to something somebody wants. Something that also could be considered is moving the custom move / item down to 200 FC (giving it retroactively to everyone in the inbetween) and making a UPC / Fizzy Form the 300 goal.

Certainly, at least one Update every two months or even monthly is a very reasonable expectation. But the current Bimonthlies don't really operate on that baseline. I do think five as a minimum for extra rewards is fairly doable (though this is also dependent on how many Updatees one has/their speed as well), but 10 is asking a bit much if you're going to lock unique prizes behind it.

Anyway, that personal gripe in itself is solved at least by the initial proposal, so we're sorta getting off course over it. I still stand by my original point that there should be some exclusive perks that only Updators have access to, but are also not tied to a time limited quota.

From what I'm seeing in terms of bi-montlies is that we need to add more things to the 5 update tier, and honestly I agree. 5 feels realistic for most updaters and 10 really should be for above and beyond work. SO here are some ideas I have:

We move type eggs down to 5, and add in SIlver Umbra Coins to the 5 tier. 10 FC tier will have Zone Eggs added in its stead.

As for an updater exclusive reward... It would have to be tied into bi-monthlies and should be at the 5 FC tier. Though for what, I am not entirely positive on.

Also, I want to see if people would like if they hit the 10 they can choose either two five-tier rewards or 1 ten tier. Or, do away with the 10 update reward tier entirely and just say if you hit ten you can choose two of a 5 FC tier reward?

I'm open to suggestions on this as well since this does tie into the whole discussion as a whole.

Also, anything on the new proposed ladder that should only be included at certain intervals would be nice, so there is less daunting bloat.

I'm gonna be honest, I hadn't planned on continuing to update once I finally close Cortoza, but this would make me seriously reconsider that decision.

I think bimonthly should maybe also include some kind of general reward for anyone who updates but doesn't hit 5 personally. Nothing amazing but you know. Something to make sure people consistently hit it.
