The Rattata backed up, startled by Hope's sudden outcry. He seemed unperturbed, other than the distinct ringing he now heard in his ears. He took a few more steps back upon being hit by the two shock waves --- grunting loudly, before seeing Hope seemingly prepare something within her cheeks. He held up his hands, as if to say 'woah hey, don't shoot.'. Before falling back on his pads, glancing up at Hope. He gave a snarky smile, padding back towards Hope. "Ya know sweetcheeks, I like em feisty..." He grinned, flicking his tail. His fur was sparked with static from the electric attacks.. but he didn't seem to be running, but that tail twitch was beginning to look a little odd. She couldn't be sure what sort of thing he was doing... until of course she saw the glowing eyes coming up from behind him. It seemed as though he had summoned a few friends, all of which seemed angry --- their sharp eyes glaring into Hope.

One Rattata, no problem. A family of Rattata? Well.. that could be a different story. She glanced at the now growing group of rats, ready to unleash her gunk shot. She hoped her friends had heard her bellowing screams... they had to have.

---

Caeda and Kaitlyn meanwhile, had of course heard the bellowed cries. Knowing full well that their friend wasn't exactly one to contain her anger, they began to head in her general direction. The Donphan and Seviper seemed reluctant, probably wanting to just leave it to their new "friends" but they followed nonetheless. As they approached, they noticed their ghost friend surrounded by many many Rattata. Luckily for them, the family hadn't noticed their presence yet. Perhaps a sneak attack was in order?

What do you do?

Hope was not a fan of tables turning, unless they were turning in her favor naturally. Being isolated, outnumbered and surrounded by a bunch of scumbag vermin like this was most decidedly, not in her favor. Quickly, she floated higher, out of possible biting range. Rattata had a nasty set of fangs, and they bloody hurt. Fleeing wasn't an option either: Caeda would never let her forget it, assuming the rats left anything to go back to the leader. Firing the Gunk Shot at the initial Rattata, she bellowed "COME FACE ME THEN FOOLS! FIGHT OR FLEE, I CARE NOT WHICH, BUT I WILL NOT BE BESTED BY SCUM LIKE YOU!", following this with a swift Shock Wave at another Rattata. If she couldn't take them all down, she'd damn well go down trying.

Their companion clearly having begun her assault, Caeda and Kaitlyn prepared to sweep into action. Caeda dived in, a Brave Bird smiting the nearest rat before slamming an Iron Head into the next, before ascending to join Hope in the skies. Blood would be spilt that day, and the bird of slaughter would truly live up to her name. Kaitlyn went for a more subtle approach, firing off a Nature Power into one of the other Rattatas, before firing off another at another Rattata. She fervently hoped the others would lend a hand, this had the potential to get out of hand very quickly. You rarely faced off against so few Rattata without there being more nearby.

The pamphlet describes a decadent two-day, Pokémon-free cruise, perfect for a weary trainer like yourself, with luxuriant amenities and fun diversions. However, it seems to dedicate a even more space to what it calls a "mysterious adventure for your Pokémon!" It reads:

"An isolated little island far off the coast of the Fizzytopia mainland, the Incognito Isle was long unknown to humans. This untouched land became a paradise for Pokémon, sitting on a volcanic hotspot, providing a rich environment for life on its south side, but also battered by harsh weather to the north that draws Pokémon more used to extreme environments. The island is said to be filled with strange and mysterious treasures, but the Fizzytopian government has declared it a nature preserve, not allowing a single human step foot on its shores. They have, however, allowed for trainers to let their Pokémon explore the island and interact with its native population in order to uncover some of the treasures within.

Our ships run from Fizzytopia on a regular basis, making the trip out to the island and stopping at each of the four docks at each cardinal point of the island, before taking the trainers on a two-day tropical cruise. Trainers who wish to let their Pokémon have a little fresh air and freedom can drop off up to three Pokémon at one dock and allow them to venture out and explore until they return. Each Pokémon is given an Adventure Badge, allowing their trainer and Preserve Staff (stationed offshore on a ship that patrols the area) to keep an eye on them and make sure nothing bad becomes of them. Your team will also be given a special Treasure Bag, allowing them to handle and store any treasure they might come across safely to return back to you (and to prevent any surprise evolutions)! The Pokémon who inhabit the island are rather friendly, and if your Pokémon give them a helping hand or accompany them on a little adventure, they might be rewarded with a fun prize or stumble upon something rare!"

Below, you find a list of areas enumerated by the pamphlet for your Pokémon's exploration...

Vivacious Village - A happy hamlet built by native Pokémon, consisting mostly of clay and thatch huts, lying just north of the southern dock. These huts dot the southern foothills of the mountain peak in the middle of the island. Normal-typed Pokémon favor dwelling in the hills, while Pokémon living in center of the village closer to the dock tend are a bit rougher. The village square doubles as a sort of an arena for local Fighting Pokémon to engage in sparring matches or training. Please use sandybrown.

“Everyone’s so jolly and alive! I could thrive here! What a nice place!” Sana says in amusement. She travels with Chachi and Mina by rolling around, frequently stopping to admire the huts and say hi to the natives they pass by as they walk.

“It is, isn’t it?” Mina runs her hands on the thatch huts, and knocks on the clay ones. “They’ve built their houses very well, too. I’d love to learn how they put this all together. The hard houses seem easy enough, since you just carve and lift. But the stems and leaves--”

“Yeah, yeah,” Chachi waves, impatient. “Construction, shmonstruction.” He doesn’t bother much for the huts and the Pokemon they pass by, and is more set on the mountain they are walking towards. “What I really want is to climb up that mountain! See that?” He points to the peak. “What’s up there?”

“We will get there, Chachi,” Mina sighs. “It’s nice to roam around the village for awhile. There’s a lot to see here.”

Chachi groans. “Ugggghhhh. But I want to mountain climb now! You like running up and down hills, don’t you, Mina? What if we stay too long here and someone gets to whatever’s up there and--”

“Whatever is up there won’t be lost,” Mina says, still getting a feel of the houses, and even the ground they were walking on. “And if it does, there’s bound to be more. There’s time to climb. First, we explore the bottom.”

Sana stops rolling and looks at the bickering Piplup and Meditite. “Come on, you guys! Latte says to make the most of our time here. We’re gonna do both, alright?”

Chachi concedes with a sigh. “Fine. We’ll explore the village. But let’s do it fast, because I really want to get some treasure!” He walks ahead of his companions.

Mina chuckles. “I know we’ll get through to him. Race you!” She runs off to catch up to Chachi. “I’m much faster than you!” Sana rolls towards Mina and Chachi. They continue exploring the village at the hills surrounding the mountain.

Lil'twick:

A loud (what else?) thud on the wooden bars grabs Bracken’s attention. The Loudred are back, grinning as before, and proceed to open the cell door.

“COME ON SUPERSTAR, THE KING WANTS HIS CONCERT.”

Realizing the Pansage can’t quite walk on his own due to being chained, one of the guards effortlessly lifts him overhead, while the other one takes Bracken’s guitar, handling it with no care or love whatsoever, the brute.

They cross a number of corridors, hallways of different lengths, but all decorated with several paintings of the same ugly-as-sin Exploud with a silly crown on his head. The expressions on the portraits range from extremely bored to about-to-eat-the-Smeargle-if-it-doesn’t-hurry-the-hell-up, each perfectly encapsulating the complex being that rules over the Whismur and Loudred of Radiant Rainforest. Bracken isn’t the type to get worked up about things, but even he can tell the audience is gonna be rough for his next performance.

Every Whismur they pass on the way to the throne room hurries out of the guards’ path, looking down in fear and respect, before resuming whatever it was doing. And after a while of being like a sack of potatoes, Bracken feels the Loudred come to a halt and hears the sound of a large door being opened.

“YOUR MAJESTY, HERE ARE THE PRISONERS, AS YOU REQUESTED: A PANSAGE AND A GUITAR.”

Bracken is tossed to the ground unceremoniously, his chains are removed and his musical instrument placed on his hands. The Pansage expected to hear an even stronger, earth-shaking voice come from massive crowned Exploud, but the giant barely even acknowledges him, merely staring him down until Bracken starts playing – and he better get it right…

~~~
Terrance clearly isn’t one to wait around and watch things unfold. And even if the one trapped inside is the frankly insufferable Bracken – who somehow manages to be annoying even to a deaf Pokémon -, the Timburr is still willing to go all-out to rescue him. Definitely all-out. The “burn-down-the-fort-with-Bracken-still-inside” kind of all-out.
Terrance’s flaming fist connects with the outer wall of the castle, built of huge logs that put the Timburr’s own to shame. Embers catch the dry wood and turn to hungry blazes, which grow in size the more fuel they devour. In a matter of seconds, the wildfire spreads to cover a large area of the wall, and the scent of burning fills Terrance’s nostrils. It’s a shame, then, that he never hears the guard on patrol coming up behind him, alerted by the smoke and smell…
A Loudred knocks Terrance on the back with a Pound, knocking him off-balance and causing him to temporarily drop his log. Then, ominously towering over him, the guard unleashes a violent Hyper Voice!... and nothing happens, that Terrance can tell. Both stand awkwardly for a moment, deaf invader and confused soldier looking one another in the eye, while the fire behind them continues to spread. It won’t be long before the entire fort is ablaze and collapsing on itself.
“Tick-tock goes the clock”, they say. Terrance wouldn’t know.
Well, it’s not like the odds are unfavourable. It’s the three of you versus a giant Torterra, a samurai Farfetch’d, and potentially every Pokémon that the continent turtle has allowed to leave on its back! Like taking Rare Candy from a Magby.
Nina pumps up the ranks with a mighty Howl, as if she was a fully-grown Ninetales already. Encouraged by her teammate’s resolve, the rest of the team are quick to mount an assault against the seemingly-insurmountable odds. Sam is the first to strike, burying her fangs deep into the earth, causing the patches of grass around it to become covered in frost. No sound was heard from the colossal Torterra, but Nina notices a large number of leaves wither fall from the large tree at the center of the garden…
Mimi, having understood the importance of a solid defense, again summons her trusty Barrier to keep the team safe, then shifts her focus to the betrayer. Farfetch’d smirks and spreads his wings, inviting the small Mime Jr. to hit him with her best shot! And so she does: however, the attack that follows isn’t the mild Confusion that Fafetch’d saw her use all the time up until now…. But a vicious lightning spear that strikes the bird down from his perch with impressive force!!
“Ugh! B-but how?...” Farfetch’d shakes his head, still dazed from the attack he didn’t expect. “You never used that move before, even when brute force was necessary! Were… were you playing me?!”
The wild duck waves his stalk in the air, then lets out a sharp cry. In a minute, the bushes around him start rustling, and from them emerge a wave of reinforcements: a Caterpie, Wurmple and Scatterbug, all chosen by Torterra to live in its world for their potential to grow into gorgeous butterflies. But for now, they are being used as mere soldiers, fed to the oncoming threat without a second thought.
“Protect the God of your new world, earn your place upon it,” declares Farfetch’d. “As for the three of you, it’s not too late to reconsider. I will return to hear your change of heart!”
With that, the bird takes flight away from the battlefield to Roost and recover its wounds; no doubt he’ll be back. Meanwhile, the three bugs look at each other, visibly frightened, before reluctantly advancing towards the group to intercept them…
It might be that Farfetch'd and Torterra have been caught off-guard by the full extent of the party's power and are dispatching small fry to wear them out in a war of attrition - either way, the three now have to decide where they go from here, or more importantly, who they should target!
mespritchaser:
Settling for exploring Vivacious Village for now after some differences of opinion, Latte’s trio goes on their merry way towards the center of the settlement. Pokemon on the street greet them merrily, more than used to outsiders coming to visit; however, the further in they go, the fewer natives they meet, as if the streets become progressively emptier – and yet, paradoxically, louder.
After a while, everything becomes clear: it seems a makeshift fighting ring has been erected at the heart of the village, and contrary to what is usually the case, no friendly competition among Fighting-Types is taking place there; instead, a Sawk and Throh aruge violently with one another, occasionally turning their fury to a very old-looking Machoke standing between them, who doesn’t seem to be getting much of a say in the matter. The closer you get, the clearer their bickering becomes.
“I hired his services first!” shouts the Throh.
“He has weaved battle garments for my family for generations, before your ilk came along!” spits Sawk in return. “Not that he’s any use to anyone anymore, are you old man?!”
“You better have that Belt of mine ready in time for the Close Combat Cup tomorrow,” threatens the Judo expert, waving a finger in front of the elderly Machoke’s face. “Or are your hands too crippled to get the job done? If I don’t get my order on time, I will personally go to your house for a refund. You know what that means, right?...”
The two rivals finally go their separate ways, leaving Machoke alone near the ring, once-mighty and now trembling hands covering his face.
Does the trio approach, or is it better to steer clear of this volatile situation?...
Come to Incognito Isle, they said, it's a vacation they said. It'll be fun, they said, like taking candy from a Magby they said. Well.
At least for Mimi, it seemed to be. The bird seemed to be distraught over her super effective strike, and the baby smirked with mischief in her eyes, little chest swelling with pride at the sight of his retreat. Mimi blew a raspberry, sticking her tongue out tauntingly as he ascended into the trees and the three beheld their new opponents.
"Protect the new God? Really?" Samantha was snide, huffing and snarling at the bugs that showed themselves. They looked terrified. "Small fry."
"Now, now. They're obviously being intimidated into this." The Vulpix chided, "Don't bully them, too. Our war isn't with you. If you leave us alone or help us, we can get rid of the Torterra and you can go back to your old home, free."
"That still seems like a tall order, though..." Mimi contemplated in a troubled tone.
"Not so," Nina assured, crystal eyes honing in on the fallen, dead leaves. "Carry on at the base and the trees. The Pokemon the Farfetch'd call don't have much to do with this."
"Ohh."
"Let's get on with it, then." Sam decided.
The dog curled her paws a little, as if trying to imitate human fists, and then waited for Nina's first move. She once again executed something icy: powder snow and freeze dry, letting the elements dry and crust the nature that surrounded them. Samantha took the next move then, letting her fangs ignite with flames, thawing the frost and hoping to burn through and crisp the dried grass, leaves and the like. Mimi needed a bit more time to choose her attack, but settled on using brick break, bringing her tiny body against one of the trees, hoping to shake, crack or even fell it if she could. If a certain bird came tumbling down, well, that'd be a bonus the psychic was certainly ready for.
Maskerade: You leave your party behind with well wishes and prayers, hoping that Dialga would watch over them, and the trio peer up to the mountain's peak. It's high and foreboding, the wind howling in the ears louder than any Lycanroc could pitch, and the ice is biting and ferocious. Surely even Kami, in his infinite knowledge, might find his mortal vessel struggling in these conditions. Regardless, Kyuki takes the charge by a couple of steps, hers the only prints visible in the snow as psychic companions float after her in the approach to the Fjord's mountain trail.
With no mark, the sky cloudy and mist hanging low and thick, it's impossible for them to know the amount of time that passed but the pull for Kyuki is magnetic and with every moment she felt it more. Only, that isn't the only thing the fox felt and Kyuki also wasn't the only one to sense it: there was something in the air, something wrong, something bad--
Visibility might have been an issue for the female, but for the other two, their psychic senses can pick up things others can't. Beyond the veil, a great and long shadow looms on the scaling mountain path, and if the psychics attempted to pick up on anything they would immediately feel sorrow and distress from whatever monster waited ahead. Did they dare press on to discover what was before them, or would they attempt to find another way to whatever called for Kyuki?
((OoC: despite the odds, my Vulpix is actually male :P))
Kyuki, despite his lack of psychic prowess, could traverse the mountain path with relatively little difficulty. After all, the ice and snow carried in the wind was simply a stronger version of his own Snow Warning. However, it was the two companions that followed who alerted the Vulpix to the true danger that lurked beyond the white veil standing between them and the peak that called out to the fox.
Jin, ever careful, picked up his pace to join Kyuki, then stopped in front of his friend with outstretched arms. However, even after telling him of the dark, ominous presence ahead, the Vulpix seemed undeterred - whatever the strange force that compelled him to keep climbing, it overwhelmed his fear. Jin shook his head, and offered an alternative: perhaps if they went around the mountain and tried ascending from the opposite side, they could avoid whatever lurked ahead...
No.
The single word echoed with frightening authority in the minds of Jin and Kyuki. Whether they liked it or not, when Kami spoke, they listened.
It has been a while since I felt... curious. The presence ahead intrigues me; we will meet it.
Jin's hands shook in a mixture of fear and anger. He knew he lacked the strength to oppose Kami, and so did the millennia-old Abra - his word was absolute, and his distant interest with worldly affairs endangered those around him. Because Kami would always endure, in this body or the next, making his pursuit of curiosity inconsequential... while those who were forced to accompany him in these endeavours were seldom as lucky.
Why such rage, Meditite? I thought your master taught you how to control emotions. Look at this as an opportunity to... shorten the colossal gap in power between you and Sai.
Jin turned his back to the Abra, determined not to give in to his taunting. Since Kami had already decreed their course of action, then the best he and Kyuki could do was stay on their toes, and pray to Arceus that they'd be strong enough to fend off the menace ahead. The Vulpix nodded, calm as always, clinging to the belief that fate had brought them here for a purpose grander than perishing midway; Wolfgang Lauther had taught him to defy the odds, and Sai Hajimoto had imparted upon him the peace of mind to carry out any task. They would not fail, Kyuki was sure of it.
Perfect. We press onwards.
Maskerade: There was a silent, but nonetheless heated, conflict between the company as to their next move. Kyuki didn't seem to mind whatever route they took, so long as they actually made it to the mountain top, which would have suited Jin's plan just fine. As it was, Kami's word was law, and if that meant that Kyuki's journey failed to suit his interests... Well. So much for protecting the pack.
The trio went on, and the sight that they discovered betrayed the horror that the air seemed to hold. It was a Steelix, almighty in stance, its metallic body coated in snow and ice. The Pokemon was sobbing over a tall, mishapen slab of ice, and upon closer inspection an Onix could be seen entombed. There were scratches all over, as if the Steelix might have attempted to break it open, but to no avail. Her baby was trapped.
The creature's rumbling cries paused when the party approached, and she swung slowly to face them. At first, Steelix looked alarmed, but then seemed to settle and return to mourning her child, "You three don't look like you come from here..." The Pokemon rumbled sadly, "You would be better off going back down the way you came. There's nothing but loss and suffering left up here!"
The ground shakes and some snow spills down onto the path. Steelix seems to worsen. What will they do?
Meetan:
The team’s assessment is that they shouldn’t bother with whatever “small fry” Torterra and Farfetch’d send their way. After all, not only do they seem weak, they look just as willing to battle, and besides, toppling the giant takes priority over everything else.
The air around them suddenly becomes chilly while Nina’s eyes glow like sapphires; before long, hundreds of tiny snowflakes begin to fall, covering the grassy meadow. With the first part of their plan concluded, Nina then prepares to unleash a wave of Freeze Dry, while Sam gathers fire in her fangs… but before they can continue the assault, the three Bug-Type recruits suddenly get in their way! Neither of them makes a move, knowing they are outclassed, fear plastered on their faces… but they seem determined on standing up to those who would destroy their new home. After all, they have no other home to return to, since Torterra effectively dried up most of the Radiant Rainforest… Will Nina and Sam carry on with their attacks regardless of the opposition, or reconsider their approach?
Deciding to employ her efforts differently, and emboldened by her companions’ resolve, Mimi moves away from the other two to strike the large tree at the center of Torterra’s back – the one that seems to lose leaves whenever the titan is damaged. It might be, however, wishful thinking on the part of the Psychic-Type to hope that a Mime Jr can single-handedly topple such a large tree with its limited physical strength, and as Mimi’s hand meets the trunk, the best she can manage is to leave a dent on the hard, rough surface. Undeterred, she strikes again, widening the wound on the tree like a lumberjack, while leaves continue to fall all around her. However, that is all that tumbles down from above, with no sign of Farfetch’d nearby.
In her tenacity, she fails to realize something foul is afoot nearby. Coming in from behind, the wild duck strikes Mimi on the back with a silent, deadly Aerial Ace, making her crash against the trunk she’d been trying to cut down. Then, with his opponent pinned against the tree, Farfetch’d lifts the Mime Jr by the chin with his stalk, before making it transform into a Leaf Blade that threatens to deliver a fatal slash to the neck…
“Retribution for that earlier Thunderbolt, I’m afraid,” taunts the wild duck. “Now little one, let’s go into round two of negotiations, shall we?”
He points with his head over to where Nina and Sam are being blocked off by the three bugs.
“They like it here. Master Torterra’s forest is peaceful, fertile, and quite frankly, the only place they have left,” Farfetch’d continues. “I suggest you tell your friends to settle down and accept our offer, stay as Torterra’s guardians. Otherwise, you might not live to become Ms. Mime…”
The Leaf Blade is held firmly against Mimi’s throat. What will she do?
Kyuki looked at the scene in silence, his heart heavy. To him, the misty mountain’s cold was almost comfortable, imperceptible at times; but it had claimed victims of all sizes, its latest a creature as massive as an Onix. Ice, he knew, cared for none, killed and took indiscriminately, spiriting away those unfit to withstand its kiss, but it was hard to feel indifferent at the sight of this tragic loss. In tough times, Sai prayed to Dialga, and Kyuki was fairly certain Jin prayed to Sai; who did this Steelix mother pray to when her child was claimed by the cold?
While Kyuki watched from a distance, lost in thought, Jin approached the grieving mother and the ice coffin that encased her offspring. The Meditite bowed in respect, offered his condolences and gazed at the frozen Onix. Perhaps its heart still beat under all that ice; it was unlikely, but Arceus was not always merciless, and could have ordered Dialga to give this one more time. Were that the case, perhaps their meeting was not simply the product of chance…
Unfortunate. I wonder which God she will blame; there are plenty to choose from.
The Abra carried on ahead, levitating above ground. He’d seen and felt death so many times before that he’d grown insensitive to it, and always found it humorous that the living thought any gods cared. Kyurem, Giratina, Yveltal,Arceus itself? Which one would be the target of that Steelix’s anguish? Other than that amusing question, nothing else about the scenario interested Kami, and he fully intended to keep going until he realized Jin and Kyuki had stopped following.
Jin’s hope endured – and soon, Kyuki harboured that same feeling. The Meditite believed in divine piety, and the Vulpix hoped the ice he loved so much had been merciful this time. As such, they decided to join forces to release the trapped Onix from its prison; even if they were too late, Steelix could still give her child a proper burial if it was freed.
Jin made a seal with his hands, then channelled his chakra into his lungs. Remembering Sai’s teachings, as well as the fruits of his own meditation, the Fighting-Type inhaled as he went over the chant in his mind, taught to him by the monk from Saigo. He could almost hear him now…
”Red Art: Kaen Hosha!”
As he breathed out, Jin unleashed a powerful Flamethrower at the frozen Onix, but in doing so, completely expended his limited fire chakra. After all, the move was foreign to those of his kind, and it took tremendous energy and concentration for him to employ it even once. It would take a while before his chakra regained balance, but it was for a good cause…
Kyuki followed up with a draining move of his own. Hopefully the ice prison would weaken under Jin’s flame, and that was the opportunity he needed…. Activating every cell in his body, the fox drew energy from each one; a glimmering blue sphere began to form in his open mouth, until it became a perfect orb – a technique he, too, learned under Sai’s tutelage, one that no other Vulpix could employ. With a howl, Kyuki released the Focus Blast at the frozen Onix, hoping the Fighting energy would break through the heated ice and set the rock snake free. And then, they would know for sure the extent of the mountain’s cruelty.
Kami, meanwhile, looked on without joining in. It puzzled him as to why those two would use such taxing attacks so early on, when threats were yet to present themselves, but they were young and emotive, and had been raised by a human with similar standards. The Abra vaguely recalled a time when he, too, thought there was some greater meaning to life.
Foolish young ones. Time will dispel that illusion.
The air around them suddenly becomes chilly while Nina’s eyes glow like sapphires; before long, hundreds of tiny snowflakes begin to fall, covering the grassy meadow. With the first part of their plan concluded, Nina then prepares to unleash a wave of Freeze Dry, while Sam gathers fire in her fangs… but before they can continue the assault, the three Bug-Type recruits suddenly get in their way! Neither of them makes a move, knowing they are outclassed, fear plastered on their faces… but they seem determined on standing up to those who would destroy their new home. After all, they have no other home to return to, since Torterra effectively dried up most of the Radiant Rainforest… Will Nina and Sam carry on with their attacks regardless of the opposition, or reconsider their approach?
Deciding to employ her efforts differently, and emboldened by her companions’ resolve, Mimi moves away from the other two to strike the large tree at the center of Torterra’s back – the one that seems to lose leaves whenever the titan is damaged. It might be, however, wishful thinking on the part of the Psychic-Type to hope that a Mime Jr can single-handedly topple such a large tree with its limited physical strength, and as Mimi’s hand meets the trunk, the best she can manage is to leave a dent on the hard, rough surface. Undeterred, she strikes again, widening the wound on the tree like a lumberjack, while leaves continue to fall all around her. However, that is all that tumbles down from above, with no sign of Farfetch’d nearby.
In her tenacity, she fails to realize something foul is afoot nearby. Coming in from behind, the wild duck strikes Mimi on the back with a silent, deadly Aerial Ace, making her crash against the trunk she’d been trying to cut down. Then, with his opponent pinned against the tree, Farfetch’d lifts the Mime Jr by the chin with his stalk, before making it transform into a Leaf Blade that threatens to deliver a fatal slash to the neck…
“Retribution for that earlier Thunderbolt, I’m afraid,” taunts the wild duck. “Now little one, let’s go into round two of negotiations, shall we?”
He points with his head over to where Nina and Sam are being blocked off by the three bugs.
“They like it here. Master Torterra’s forest is peaceful, fertile, and quite frankly, the only place they have left,” Farfetch’d continues. “I suggest you tell your friends to settle down and accept our offer, stay as Torterra’s guardians. Otherwise, you might not live to become Ms. Mime…”
The Leaf Blade is held firmly against Mimi’s throat. What will she do?
"Really...?" The Snubbull snarled out once the three opponents stood their ground. She placed one paw forward, shoulders raised, biting and snapping as if to exert her dominance.
"Samantha," Nina warned, but the dog wasn't having any of it. She hadn't the patience in this life or death situation, and knew that their trainer could be as impulsive as herself. The canine launched forward with a scary face, aiming fiery fangs for the bug in the centre, ready to chomp down twice if it took that much.
"Very well..." The fox sighed, but stopped short when she looked up to a frightening scene, "Mimi!"
The baby was flailing and struggling in the wake of the Farfetch'd, hunched from the strike to her back that had been taken in vengeance. The bird had a leaf blade to the baby's throat, the Pokemon tearful. Samantha stopped, whether or not she had a foe in her maw, rage only building in the Snubbull further. They were stuck in a tough situation. There was no way they could leave Mimi like this, no way they could let her die-- but to serve Torterra, to allow it to decimate the entire Isle, was also something that couldn't be done. In numbers, sacrificing one was better than the many... But...
"Leave her alone!" Samantha growled.
The psychic whimpered, mind racing. Of course she felt the same, even while too scared to die, but she couldn't let herself be used as bait. Her trainer loved battling, some of her teammates were admirably strong. She had to figure this out, save herself, and so Mimi tried. It was a last ditch effort: a sudden flurry of attract and a hasty, desperate tickle to try and force Farfetch'd to drop his blade. All Mimi needed was some distance between him and her, and then the battle could resume - and she could shock the life out of this nasty, horrible, evil birdbrain.
Maskerade: Kyuki found comfort in the cold, but not enough to lessen his sorrow for the Onix's plight; even as the Abra almost floated on. It was a good thing that his words went unheard by the grieving mother, who might have attempted to take out the reincarnated god for his insensitive remarks. Her eyes opened, sobs a little quieter as the duo joined forces to try and shatter the tomb and release the rocky child, but the very faint hope in the Steelix's eyes faded away.
Their attacks had barely left scratches.
"There's nothing you can do to free him," The beast sobbed, shaking her head, muscles visibly rolling in their slots, "It's happening all over the mountain. The Pokemon who are frozen by the Mother of the Snow are stuck like this forever, she'll haunt and hunt until we're all just statues!" The mourning mother bellowed, this eerie conclusion echoing around the mountainside until all that was left was the relentless storm and her sounds of sadness, "You should go back, or it'll happen to you, too. All three of you..."
It seemed Kami's concern might have been correct. The other two had used rather taxing abilities when there was at least one dangerous adversary roaming their path, and it had taken out Pokemon greater than them. With this in mind, what do they do?
At the sight of the three stubborn insects, Samantha loses her cool. If she has to murder a bug to send a message to the other two so be it, but just as she's about to snap her flaming jaws shut around the Caterpie in the middle, the three worms suddenly flee and scatter at the sight of the Snubbull's Scary Face, survival instinct overcoming their will to protect the new home.
However, before Nina and Sam can resume their assault on Torterra, they notice Mimi-s predicament: pinned against the tree, Leaf Blade close to the neck, the Mime Jr seems helpless and the wild duck in full control. From where they stand, all they can do is shout menacingly, but if their foe is in any way intimidated, he does not convey it.
"That dog sure loves to bark orders," remarks Farfetch'd with a hint of amusement. "Oh well, time is up I'm afraid."
But as the bird prepares to run his blade across Mimi's neck, he finds himself flinching. Not out of Attraction per se, but something about the Mime Jr's look has changed enough as to make the enemy hesitate, awakening the minuscule flicker of goodness that still shines deep within his heart. However, it is nothing but a ruse, and as soon as Farfetch'd drops his guard, Mimi Tickles him beneath the wing, causing him to fumble and drop his stalk!
That is just the opening she was looking for: leaping away from the tree, Mimi sets just enough distance between herself and the recovering foe to make sure he can-t slash at her when he picks his weapon back up, and once again fires off a Thunderbolt that hits the mark! Farfetch'd, injured, takes flight and refuge atop the large tree once again and then, hidden beneath the foliage, lets loose an Air Slash that strikes the Mime Jr in the chest as retaliation!
As Sam and Nina prepare to reenter the fray, something else happens. Many of the leaves that have fallen from the tree throughout the battle suddenly rise from the floor, as if picked up by a gust of wind, and fly in the Vulpix and Snubbull's direction! The Razor Leaves slash away at the pair, and that wasn't Farfetch'd's doing at all...
Enough of your insolence! If you will not stay as my guardians, you will die and remain as compost!
Mimi has taken the most damage from Farfetch'd's Air Slash, but Nina and Sam have felt the sting from that Razor Leaf as well, since Torterra is by far stronger... It seems the battle has finally boiled down to the giant and its servant versus Alice's chosen three! The final chapter begins now - what will the trio do?
*Mimi has gained 2 Levels!*
*Samantha has gained 1 Level!
Samantha didn't have an opportunity to gloat over scaring away the small fry, because all almost seemed lost. The Farfetch'd was refusing to listen and was ready to execute their smaller friend until Mimi managed to trick her way out of it in a way that brought both relief and pride to the dog. The baby hurried back to their end of the arena, breaths heavy from adrenaline, only to take an attack from the sulking bird and see her friends endure another from the irate beast.
"That doesn't sound like the words of a good ruler to me." Nina remarked, voice as cold as the ice she had come from. Mimi was visibly struggling, more than they were, but determination shone in her eyes. Somehow in spite of her physical pain, it looked like the dual-type had grown from everything they had experienced-- and it was the same for all of them. "If you're ready, let's go!"
Samantha moved first, making a beeline for the tree that might have been the root of a lot of their suffering, fangs flaming as she buried them into the ground around the trunk. Samantha was growling savagely, and Mimi made use of her copycat move to mimic the servant's earlier air slash-- directing it towards the trees where it might have been roosted, along with a thunderbolt for good measure. Nina had switched targets to aid her, deciding that the bird needed to be dealt with before it could cause further interruption. The fox's maw sparkled, and out of it came a frost breath. One of these super effective attacks needed to find its mark, because all three knew that the longer this dragged on, the more dire things became.
This is the moment of truth, the last stand to rid Radiant Rainforest of its new, unwelcome ruler. The critters allowed to live atop its giant, island-like shell might not see it that way, but there is nothing benevolent about Torterra or the methods it employed to grow its personal paradise – at the expense of all life in the old Rainforest. For that, the colossus must pay!
Samantha, always the most hot-headed, again channels fire into her fangs and dashes towards the large tree, the heart of this new forest and the one Torterra like treasures the most. As she runs towards it, the tree begins to shake and release a large number of leaves, which fly towards the Snubbull like daggers. Each Razor Leaf grazes the pink dog’s body, leaving behind a scratch, but the barrage is not enough to halt Sam’s momentum and the Fire Fang finds its mark as her teeth bury into the trunk. As she does, and flames begin to spread, the leaves scattered across the grassy floor begin to wither and turn yellow, as if reflecting Torterra’s own suffering.
Nina and Mimi, meanwhile, prepare to look for Farfetch’d, but that search is simply isn’t necessary: as soon as Samantha makes it to the tree, the feathered swordsman strikes, diving down to remove the nuisance from inflicting further damage. His stalk glimmers with an emerald glow, taking the shape of a sword, but before the move connects, a Mimicked blade of air interrupts the strike, colliding with the bird’s weapon and sending it flying!
Now disarmed, Farfetch’d is easy pickings, and the subsequent Thunderbolt brings the avian to his knees (metaphorically more so than anatomically, anyway). It falls on Nina to deliver the finishing blow to the panting bird, and the fox does so with cold, stoic efficiency – a cold wave washes over Farfetch’d and propels him against the tree, where he collides with a violent thud before falling flat on his face, drained of all strength.
“M… mercy…” is all he can muster to say.
Failures deserve none!
The booming voice is the harbinger of disaster, as Torterra has reached its own breaking point. The Frenzy Plant dome begins to split apart, each tentacle-like root coming to life on its own – and one of them suddenly comes crashing down violently on Farfetch’d, crushing him completely under the plant’s weight!
Much like before, the team is now forced to try and dodge the Frenzy Plant vines as they can, only this is no longer a test – the giant lashes flail about threatening to kill anything caught in their path like what happened to Farfetch’d, in what is clearly Torterra’s last desperate attempt to purge Sam, Nina and Mimi from its paradise!
Can they put an end to things once and for all, or will they too become victims of Torterra’s Frenzy Plant?!
Mercy, the Farfetch'd had requested. Samantha definitely would have said 'no' to that, although Nina and Mimi might have been satisfied with the simple knowledge of the bird being unconscious and unable to intervene. That didn't matter, though, not when the self-proclaimed 'god' had lashed the life from its subject. Couldn't the other Pokemon see and hear this? Why were none rising up? Not all could have been crippled with fear, wherever they were hiding. The Mime Jr screamed and burst into tears, Nina stumbling several paws back in horror.
"M- Mimi..." Nina started, lost for words. Their owner would be reacting the same way if she realised what kind of holiday this had turned out to be (none at all). The baby continued to sob.
"If you don't move, you'll get squashed!" The Snubbull barked fiercely. It was clear that she was rattled, too, but the canine's shakes seemed to be equal parts rage as much as being scared. "We can't stop now we're here! You said it yourself!"
"... Ah." The fox was unsure, but she gently nipped at the Mime, who jumped and squealed. "Come on, use your barrier again. We'll finish this and go home, but we can't stand still, Mimi!"
Nina pulled at a lithe pink arm, attempting to draw the Mime from her spot lest she share Farfetch'd fate. Samantha was already weaving and stumbling here and there, a fire lit in the dog's eyes. Her jaw bubbled and frothed purple, and it became clear that the growing Pokemon was now striking from a range, firing off what looked to be splatter of sludge bombs towards the tree and the cracks in the Torterra's grassy shell. It was a surprising but good strategy, so long as they did their job.
"That barrier, Mimi." Nina reminded gently, turning her gaze to the fearsome frenzy plants. It was a long shot, but the Vulpix had her own idea. Her eyes glowed blue, and she attempted to 'disable' the move for a time. Maybe it'd force the beast to recharge if it took pause and stopped draining the forest. With that, Nina aimed more frost breath, hoping to freeze and add fragility to the world around them. Mimi tried to put up another barrier as instructed, briefly at a loss before aiming her 'copycat' technique at a frost breath and sludge bomb from her allies. All the three could hope for was to come out alive.
Torterra’s last act of desperation was destroying its own dome to turn it into an ultimate attack – bringing down the thorny wall that protected its “heaven” from the outside world to gain a mighty weapon with which to crush the intrudes. The Frenzy Plants flailed about wildly, threatening to flatten Alice’s partners in the same way that it had the Farfetch’d. For that reason, the team realizes the urgency of setting up one final assault, before it’s too late!
Samantha is once again the first to move, but she forsakes fire in favour of a long-ranged approach – she arches her head back and belches out a wave of toxic sludge, looking to rot the tree and the heart of Torterra’s domain. The venom seeps in through the cracks and the Frenzy Plants only twist and turn more violently, indicating their owner is in deep pain.
Mimi takes much longer to regain her composure, and Nina desperately needs the Mime Jr to put her act together – the ice fox watches silently as a thorny vine suddenly comes crashing down upon them both, with a momentum that is much too strong for her to Disable quickly. It comes closer and closer, threatening to grind them to dust… but at the very last second, it collides with a powerful Barrier, sparing both Nina and Mimi! It keeps up the pressure, however, and the psychic shield begins to flicker and crack, despite the Mime Jr’s best effort… until the Plant eventually overpowers the protective dome and slams into the mimic, albeit with severely reduced force! She tumbles across the floor, while Nina manages to evade the blow, and finally her Disable seems to have an effect – suddenly, all the vines stop moving and bury back into the ground, vanishing completely!
I have had enough of you three! Why won’t you die?!
With its greatest weapon neutralized, Torterra resorts to another old tactic – summoning every single fallen leaf resting on its shell, it sends a full-blown Leaf Storm crashing down on the party! However, three insects suddenly leap out of the nearby grass: a Wurmple jumps in front of Sam, a Weedle shields Nina and a Caterpie leaps out to protect Mimi! The worms they had met earlier have finally chosen their side, and are willing to sacrifice themselves for Alice’s team!
The Leaf Storm destroys the three Bug-Types, slashing away at them over and over again. When the attack subsides, the insects lie motionless on the floor, but no harm has come to Sam, Nina or Mimi! And just as Torterra starts gathering leaves for a second Storm, Mimi employs the very last of her strength and breathes out a Mimicked Frost Breath that chills everything in its path… For a moment that feels like an eternity, everything falls silent, but at last the beast speaks.
… I yield. You win, you nuisances! You are an infection I would much rather get rid of than continue to fight. Leave me be, and I will move somewhere else, if this Rainforest means that much to you! Just… take whatever you want and go!
As it finishes speaking, a number of Pokemon that had previously been hiding in fear of retaliation from the Torterra finally walk out of their hiding places and approach the victorious trio, looking both embarrassed for their cowardice and relieved to finally be free again. They come bearing gifts, it seems, whatever they could find on Torterra’s back that might be helpful – several Venipede, Scatterbug and other insects carry a variety of Apricorns and lay them at Samantha’s feet, probably considering her the leader of the group. And a little while later, a Pidgeotto flies down from above carrying something in its talons, the most precious item it could find after scouring Torterra’s shell from above – it’s a Heart Scale!
The trio are finally allowed to leave and return to Alice, knowing that Torterra will no longer leech off of Radiant Rainforest’s resources. In time, life and harmony will return, and Pokemon will be able to rebuild their homes, safe from the titan’s tyranny. Congratulations!
*Samantha gains 3 Levels!*
*Nina gains 3 Levels!*
*Mimi gains 3 Levels!*
((OoC: You can claim your rewards on your next and final reply: 1x Heart Scale and 4x Apricorns of your choice. Hope you enjoyed it and didn’t mind some of the silliness! ^^))
As it finishes speaking, a number of Pokemon that had previously been hiding in fear of retaliation from the Torterra finally walk out of their hiding places and approach the victorious trio, looking both embarrassed for their cowardice and relieved to finally be free again. They come bearing gifts, it seems, whatever they could find on Torterra’s back that might be helpful – several Venipede, Scatterbug and other insects carry a variety of Apricorns and lay them at Samantha’s feet, probably considering her the leader of the group. And a little while later, a Pidgeotto flies down from above carrying something in its talons, the most precious item it could find after scouring Torterra’s shell from above – it’s a Heart Scale!
The trio are finally allowed to leave and return to Alice, knowing that Torterra will no longer leech off of Radiant Rainforest’s resources. In time, life and harmony will return, and Pokemon will be able to rebuild their homes, safe from the titan’s tyranny. Congratulations!
*Samantha gains 3 Levels!*
*Nina gains 3 Levels!*
*Mimi gains 3 Levels!*
((OoC: You can claim your rewards on your next and final reply: 1x Heart Scale and 4x Apricorns of your choice. Hope you enjoyed it and didn’t mind some of the silliness! ^^))
For Samantha, at least, everything had gone exactly as she had wanted it to. She was fighting a ruthless opponent with equally relentless tactics, focusing on the damage while Nina babysat the smallest of the three. Only when she thought it was over for her friends did the dog take pause, calling out, heart nearly stopping as Mimi fended off a grisly fate with a barrier.
The baby was thrown back, and even when Nina's disable finally kicked in, the fight wasn't over. It took the 'weaklings' from earlier, shielding them from the leaf storm and yet another frosty breath to put things to an end. The Torterra had surrendered, much to the surprise of them all, and the creatures visibly deflated in relief when they realised it wasn't all a ruse. Torterra planned to stop, at least for now.
"You can go to Hell is what you can do." Samantha grumbled venomously, paws itching absently at her wounded form. Vicious eyes witnessed other Pokemon scuttling out of hiding, irritated that they hadn't sooner, laying down tribute of four pink apricorns and a heart scale. Their owner would be pleased, that was for sure, but not so much when she found out what these prizes had cost them.
"Come on, let's get out of here." Nina urged. Mimi, panting heavily, took some of the apricorns in hand and let Samantha take the others; Nina carrying the scale in maw. Once their business was at a full close, the trio made as quick a journey as they could back to shore and to await their ride home.
No more holidays alone, at least for a while, that was for sure.
TheKnight’sFury:
Jayson’s trio decides it’s time for a change of pace. Rather than spend any more time by the shore, they decide to take a detour and explore the nearby Vivacious Village instead.
The location, they come to find, is aptly named: despite the shoddy, unremarkable buildings (maybe one day the inhabitants could persuade some Gurdurr to lend them their steel beams for proper construction?), the town’s population seems to be out and about on the street, having fun and visibly excited about something. Trieu follows the sounds and cheers into the town square, followed closely by Odysseus and the massive Jormungand, and soon the cause for celebration becomes apparent:
A fighting arena has been built in the center of the square – or rather, a large rectangular field made of dark-red clay to contrast with the village’s lighter-tone dirt, and that’s about it. Still, it seems to serve its purpose, as a rather unique scene is playing out on the battlefield: a Sawk, visibly aged by the wrinkles on his blue skin, stands in the middle of the arena holding a flute; around him, several Venipede lie fainted, and the crowd that has gathered around the elderly fighter erupts in cheers as he delivers a powerful Karate Chop to the only worm still conscious, promptly knocking it out.
“Your applause is the greatest reward I could ask for,” says the Sawk out loud, in a clearly tired voice as he struggles to catch his breath. “But I fear I can no longer do it as quickly or as skilfully as I once did, despite your lofty praise! So I ask one more time – is this the day that my successor comes to conquer the White Flute Challenge?”
The cheering progressively dies down, until only embarrassed, hesitant whispers escape from amidst the crowd. Sawk’s question seems to have dampened the mood somewhat, and the fighter isn’t oblivious to that. He goes to put the Flute away inside his gi and turns to leave the arena, looking disheartened.
What will the trio do?
What will the trio do?
"I will fight you!"
A cry cuts through the whispers of the crowd, catching the ear of the disheartened Sawk. Trieu had seen the upset look on the fighting types face, all he wanted was friends to play with. She loved playing herself, Jayson had been training with her, helping her to get stronger so that she could play with everyone, no matter how strong they were. This Sawk looked tough, he had just finished playing with a heap of Venipede but it seemed they weren't really up to the task. She was about to head into the arena when suddenly Odysseus teleported in front of her.
"What are you thinking Trieu!" The Skorupi sunk a little as the Magnemite chastised her. "Running off and getting yourself involved in a fight, what would Jayson think about that?" The Magnemite was quite angry, he knew the blame would be on him if the Skorupi got hurt during their adventure.
"Jayson has been training her to fighting", adds Jormungand as he eventually catches up. "He would probably be happy for her to gain some more experience. There's nothing wrong with a good fight, bumps and bruises heal after all."
"Yes but what if something goes wrong? Are you going to take the blame? I was told to keep my eye on her and make sure she didn't get hurt." Odysseus wasn't backing down, Trieu wasn't participating in this fight.
Jormungand watched as Trieu made her way closer to the Sawk, Odysseus had turned his back to the Skorupi to argue with him, giving her an opportunity to sneak away. Jormungand smiled, "I think it's a bit late now."
"Fight me!"
Trieu fired a barrage of Poison Sting at the Sawk as she began to gather water around her tail in preparation for an Aqua Tail. Ody would be angry with her for not listening to her, but she hoped that if she won than he wouldn't be as upset.
Sawk turns to leave the arena, stretching his old bones. Once again, he failed to find a successor...
As he prepares to walk away from the square, however, Trieu fires a barrage of Poison Stings at the elderly warrior. The needles whistle through the air as they approach their target, but as they are about to make contact, the Fighting-Type retaliates with a blistering fast Close Combat, each arm and leg thrust knocking away a Sting.
Then, as Trieu jumps forward and somersaults with a Water-charged tail, Sawk tenses his chest muscles, effortlessly Enduring the hit.
"Ah. Hello there," he greets the Skorupi casually. "Oh... oh, I'm afraid you misunderstood."
He reaches back inside his gi and pulls out the White Flute again. The fighter looks back at Trieu and gives her a tired smile.
"I've lived for many years, and battled many foes, though I reckon few as... eager as you, little one. But I am not the challenge," he says as he shows the Flute to Skorupi. "This is the challenge. The White Flute Challenge."
Sawk shifts his glance to Odysseus and then to Jormungand, and smiles. Apparently, he is happy with what he sees. The warrior then makes a motion towards the edge of Vivacious Village, and proceeds to explain what he meant earlier.
"This village was once almost abandoned. Nobody saw any reason to travel to this part of Incognito Isle; after all, what were a few mud huts when there were countless treasures to be found in every other region? I came here precisely because I enjoyed the peace and quiet," he says with a hint of melancholy. "However, more and more Pokemon took notice of my training habits; it became a curiosity, then a spectacle, and eventually my very livelihood. All thanks to this old Flute. But now... now I'm old, my bones hurt and I can no longer provide the entertainment that everyone comes to Vivacious Village to witness. But I fear that, if I just walk away, the town will become forgotten and deserted once more..."
He pats a recently-recovered Venipede on the head as it runs past them, whispering an apology for the beating before continuing.
"I've always used this White Flute to find opponents to train against. But as I grew stronger, it took more and more Pokemon to wear me down, and the whole thing eventually turned into something of a show... Nowadays Pokemon bet Berries on how many waves of foes I can defeat before tiring out, and even though I'm way past my prime, they continue to cheer me on. If only for that, I am reluctant to let the White Flute Challenge die. So if you're willing, here is what I propose for newcomers such as yourselves: play the Flute once and fight, then twice, and finally three times; if you manage to defeat each enemy that answers your call, I will award you the mantle of my succession."
Sawk holds up the White Flute proudly, then prepares it to hand it to the trio, before hesitating briefly. None of them have hands.
It seemed that Trieu had completely misread the situation, although thankfully the Sawk wasn't too upset that she had attacked him. Odysseus and Jormungand made their way over to the fighting type, who explained what he meant by his challenge. It seemed that he was a bit of a draw card for the small village, Pokemon would come to watch him take on waves of opponents, it was rather impressive that he could withstand so many Pokemon all by himself.
It seemed the Sawk was looking for someone to take on his mantle, although Odysseus was quick to find a problem with this. How could they? Even if they were successful, they couldn't stay here and support the town, they needed to get back to Jayson. Perhaps they were better off resolving that once they attempted the challenge. Another issue presented itself, none of them possessed hands to play the white flute! He himself was out of the question, he couldn't even breath. Jormungand's mouth was gigantic, the only real option they had was Trieu.
"We accept your challenge", Odysseus replied to the Sawk. He knew Jormungand and Trieu would be up for the fight. "You can either stick the flute in Trieu's mouth and she will do her best to play, or I'm afraid you will have play but we will do the fighting." Odysseus was aware of the power of the white flute. Its tune would lure in Pokemon, but the Pokemon would be weaker than normal, which was a good thing since it seemed multiple Pokemon would be coming at once. He was certain his tactical knowledge would prove beneficial and the trio could handle anything that came at them.
Sawk's smile widens as Odysseus accepts on behalf of the group. Deciding to spare the little fingerless Skorupi the hassle of holding and playing the flute, the elder Fighting-Type walks back to the center of the arena, to another round of cheering from the bystanders that had yet to walk away.
"Dear friends, it seems we have new contenders for the White Flute Challenge after all! Let us see how they perform."
Taking the flute to his lips, Sawk inhales deeply and plays a single low, melancholic note that echoes throughout Vivacious Vllage and the fields beyond. For a moment, nothing seems to happen... until several strange, skittering sounds begin to slowly rise in intensity.
"Oh, so it is they who answer," muses Sawk. Clearly, he has been doing this for so many years, he must know all the Pokemon who answer the call by now. "Fitting for a first challenge, those lazy buggers."
As the foes come closer, Jayson's trio starts hearing the distinct sound of something snapping. And after a brief while, they see four Krabby appear from behind one of the mud huts, dashing sideways towards the arena!
"They live near here, in Bubbling Beach. Have you ever been there, good friends?"
Sawk bows respectfully and motions for Trieu, Odysseus and Jormungand to take their place on the battlefield. Clearly, by his casual lighthearted banter, the thought of them losing in the first battle hasn't even crossed his mind.
No pressure.
Thankfully the Sawk had decided to play the flute himself. Trieu would have struggled to play it, let alone fight with it as well. That meant the trio could concentrate on the battle, the first of three. As the Sawk played the flute with practiced finesse, they waited to see who their first opponents would be.
Before long they heard the snapping of claws as a quartet of Krabby scuttle up from the beach, much like they had done just prior to this. Odysseus buzzed with delight, this first wave would be easy. He had a type advantage and the means to exploit it, Jormungand wasn't lacking in power and Trieu had plenty of tricks at her disposal.
"Alright I will take the two on the left, you two work together to take out the other two." Odysseus prepared to Electroweb one of the Krabby before rushing the other with a Spark. He would then finish the first with a Thunder Shock.
Jormungand was eager to cause some pain. His rage was beginning to build, he would hit as many as he could with Dragon Rage until they were successful.
Trieu was likewise eager to get involved in the fight. She was prepared to go toe to toe with one of the Krabby. She fired a Poison Sting as she closed in for a Leech Life, but she was ready to deliver a Slash as well if her opponent still stood strong.
They all hoped their plans would work, it would be embarrassing if they failed on the first wave!
TheKnight’sFury:
The Krabby lazily walk up to the trio, pincers snapping as they approach. One might have expected Pokemon with more fighting spirit being summoned by the flute, but Sawk - sitting indian-style just outside of the arena - knows these four well.
"They despise the sound of the flute, you see. If I play it close to their resting hour, they come to make sure I stop or else they won't be able to sleep," he says calmly. "They know better by now than to actually fight me and we have reached an agreement of sorts over the years, but... well, you are not me."
Odysseus targets two of the crabs, knowing he holds the type advantage. He easily ensnares one of the two in an electrified net, then charges against the other with a Spark that deals heavy damage to the other Krabby! The second one, annoyed by the uncalled-for attack, grabs Ody by one of the magnets with a tight Vice Grip, then blows a Bubble at close range that does... admittedly little to the Electric-Type. One Thunder Shock later - initially intended for the first Krabby, but being trapped in a Vice Grip wasn't exactly part of Ody's plan... - and the Krabby is lying flat on his back, easily knocked out. It isn't until a nasty Mud Shot hits the Magnemite from behind that it realizes the first Krabby has broken free of the Web with its pincers and is ready to avenge his fallen comrade, weakened though as it may be from the powerful electric trap it had been stuck in.
Meanwhile, Jormungand and Trieu split the remaining two foes, but neither Krabby seems overly eager to tackle the Gyarados. They just came here to ask Sawk to stop playing that damned flute, fighting a dragon wasn't what they had envisioned for the day! Too little too late, however, as a stream of blue flames washes over them, inflicting severe damage...
One of the Krabby is faster to get up from the hit, potentially indicating that its the stronger of the two, and exactly the one Trieu wants to tangle with. She unleashes a barrage of Poison Sting, which is countered by a wave of Bubblebeam, the two attacks cancelling each other out... but then, the scorpion's movements are faster, and she closes in with a combination of Leech Life and a critical Slash that easily knocks the Krabby out! However, before she has time to celebrate, the second Krabby leaps and grabs her with a Vice Grip, before turning to Jormungand with a look that clearly says "not another step, or the Skorupi gets it!"
*Odysseus has gained 1 Level!*
*Trieu has gained 1 Level!*
The conflict erupted as the Pokemon clashed against each other. While Odysseus initially found himself with the upper hand, it didn't take long the the Krabby to fight back. He dispatched one before the other targeted his exposed flank. The Mudshot was a powerful hit, his greatest weakness had been exploited, how could he have been such a fool.
Trieu had also been somewhat successful. Jormungand had weakened the other pair of Skorupi and she made quick work of one of them, landing a pair of decisive strikes that caused the krabby to crumble. But then she found herself at the mercy of the second, its pincer dug into her carapace. Although it was rather thick, the Krabby's claw was known to be strong. They had to come up with a plan to finish them off.
Jormungand was feeling helpless, if he moved to attack the Krabby would tighten its grip. The Krabby were frightened of him before, perhaps if looked intimidating enough it would cause the Krabby to pause, giving Trieu a chance to get loose.
Trieu could see Jormungand's face change, he lifted his head as he Leered down at the Krabby, letting out a rumbling growl. Trieu raised her tail, doing her best to aim it at the Skorupi as she prepared to fire a Pin Missile.
Jormungand could see what Trieu was doing, as soon as the Skorupi was loose he would finish the crab with a Thunderbolt.
Meanwhile Odysseus was preparing to finish the other remaining Krabby with another Spark and an Electroball. It was time to move onto the second wave, if they spent too much time on the first wave, they would likely run out of energy before the end.
