Pokemon General Election 720
I can't believe I hadn't heard anything about this before. Japan held a contest to determine which Pokemon was the most popular of all time, and the results are in! The Top 12 are sort of "featured" more than the rest on the website, so I'll list them in the thread. Here's the Top 100. Here's 101-720. For 101-720, the page is in Japanese with no pictures, so you'll need to translate names.
1. Greninja 2. Arceus 3. Mew 4. Pikachu 5. Sylveon 6. Genesect 7. Rayquaza 8. Zygarde 9. Charizard 10. Meloetta 11. Mewtwo 12. Eevee I thought Greninja would be really high up, but no way did I think it would be number one! Must be all the anime exposure. I can't say I'm surprised to see Arceus and Mew this high up, but I would have thought Mew would be ahead of Arceus. Pikachu is about where I thought, having been the mascot for all these years. It surprised me at first that Sylveon was this high, but it's basically the mascot for the Fairy type so I understand it. I expected Gensect to be popular, but not quite as high. Rayquaza (my personal favorite) and Charizard I expected to be Top 5, especially with their Megas. Zygarde seemed weird to me at first, but there's been a lot of hype around the new forms so it doesn't surprise me. Meloetta and Eevee are Pokemon I didn't think were popular enough for Top 12, so that surprised me for sure. And I thought Mewtwo would be cracking the Top 5 for sure. And if you're wondering who came in dead last... Simisear! Here's how I would have expected the Top 12 to shake out: Spoiler: show

I think it's hilarious that this was essentially objective proof that Gen V was by far the most hated Generation.
None of the top 5 were Unovan. Only six of the top fifty were Unovan. The last place finisher was Unovan. Four of the bottom five were Unovan. Six of the bottom ten were Unovan. Eight of the bottom 15 were Unovan. Nine of the bottom 20 were Unovan. Unova had 9 of the bottom 20, Hoenn had 4, Kanto and Sinnoh each had 3, Johto has 1, and Kalos had none of them, if you were curious how the other gens stack up. |

Usually lists like these aren't accurate once you get past the top of like 10-20% of Pokemon, so its not totally convincing.

The Uncultured One

Google Translate on this page is hilarious, it gives an assorted mishmash of the English names, the Japanese names in English letters, and exact translations of the names.
Such as: Nidorina works fine, something translated to 'lightning' and something else translated to 'Pigeon'. Another went to 'Kametete' and something's listed as just being called 'Blue'. ...Can anyone find a translated version, or do we have to DIY one? Like, if nobody's found one by the time I check back tomorrow I'm going to use veekun's japanese names and the above links to try and get a fully-fledged english names list. I've already started on the top 100. I said I started, so for all of you too lazy to click the link, here's the top 100. The rest to come tomorrow probably. I'll break them down into groups of 120, because then there's a nice even six spoiler tags. 1-120 Spoiler: show

I am floored that so many Unova Pokémon are so low on the list. Basculin! Simisage! Woobat and Swoobat! Pawniard! I mean, I figured they weren't too popular, but to be almost in last place!

The only reason there are so many legendaries in the top ten is because people wanted them for the free giveaway, I guarantee it. Explains why Arceus is at #2, even though Arceus has literally nothing going for it aside from being God.
EDIT: Pumpkaboo at 362, Gourgeist at 444... at least they got Chandelure at 92. Good. edit 2: How the fuck did Archeops get $32 edit 3: WHY THE FUCK IS MAGNEMITE #24 Last edited by deoxys; 06-23-2016 at 05:45 PM. |

Magnemite is a bit of a thing in Japan because of join avenue in B2/W2 where they would trade Magnemites pretty much infinitely. It's a meme now! ;D

I appear to have rather different tastes than most of the Japanese fandom. Seriously, how is accelgor and god dang durant in top 120, while reuniclus, uxie, and registeel flounder around in the void?! Of all the Unova pokemon that could have any sort of fame, why did these two beat out the vast majority of the rest by such a long haul? *Sigh* Then again, some of my preferences seem to be against the majority this side of the Pacific as well, so I guess I can't argue too much...
The top 10 was pretty stereotypical for the most part. The only one that really surprised me was genesect (does Japan just like Unovan bugs or something?), though greninja being almighty no. 1 was not something anyone would've expected. Friggin' Mewtwo being so low was not something I expected at all, though. Especially with all the publicity GF gives the thing in general! |

This wasn't a popularity poll. It's been confused for one given its name. This was a distribution request poll.
I can shed some light on this. For the month of May, at the start and end of every episode of Pocket Monsters XY&Z, there was a reminder to kids that they should vote in the Pokémon Sousenkyo 720. The anime made no pretense about hiding what the purpose of this election was. Clemont, the Electric-type gym leader from Kalos and one of Ash's traveling companions in the anime, says out loud to the viewers: Quote:

The naming convention as well as the timing is a parallel to Japanese pop group AKB48's very own general election, the 総選挙 Sousenkyo held every June to determine the pop idols' popularity relative to one another. This might have resulted in some confusion amongst non-anime watchers: if you don't watch the anime but you do know a thing or two about Japanese pop culture, it's quite possible you would mistakenly assume that the Pokémon Sousenkyo 720 was a popularity contest (as is its namesake). There are bound to be similarities between a poll that asks children to list off their favorite Pokémon and a poll that asks them which Pokémon is No.1 on their wishlist for a free distribution at theaters this summer. But no, this isn't a popularity poll. The marketing was quite clear that this was always about determining the Pokémon for a specific giveaway.

Ah I see, thanks for shedding some light on that Talon. In that case I'm shocked that Arceus wasn't number one. But like you said, I guess the little kids probably voted for Greninja in droves.

Porygon Z at 135? I can accept it, since I was sure it would be near the bottom because seizures. Then again, the children who were affected are probably at an age where they may not care about the anime anymore leaving children who think it's just a quirky Pokémon.
Porygon2 at 262, ok. |
