I have ended. It was almost 73 hours and I almost had to force myself to have a meal. My body seemed to be complaining about the prospect - "I don't wanna eat; I'm not hungry!" But I had begun noticing some other signs that it was time for sustenance, so I deemed it important.

This experience was reminding me of a discussion I had with Talon a few years ago when I did an experimental fast (close to 2 days, but not more). I speculated that the Ghrelin response in the body can be trained and un-trained. That is, if you add a meal to your daily schedule, you will regularly feel hungry at that time. And if you remove a meal from your schedule, you stop feeling hungry during that time. I certainly didn't expect that I would completely kill off my hunger response by going past 2 days. And now I have a unique opportunity to re-train the response as I wish now that I am breaking the fast. Do I want to switch to only one meal a day? The choice is mine, since I'm basically working with a blank slate.

I still have an hour to go. Like you, I'm not having it so bad, but I did in fact attempt this earlier this month. And I regularly did fast earlier this year at least once a week + running to little effect, for two months.

Some people just have nasty genes and have more hurdles to overcome to meet fitness goals. I feel like accepting that is probably the real first step.

Yes, in fact I plan to fast this entire month (with 600 calorie meals) until I hit my ideal weight for...certain things.

I'm going to pick the Thanksgiving week to go for it though. I have to empty my fridge of food first before I can start to cut.

I'm pretty fat right now but I'm also at my most muscular ever, even considering my time in the Marine Corps. I'll be eager to see what happens!

Yeah, I'll do it!

Is there anyone else that wants to try it with us this year? Even if not for the whole 3 days?

Currently planning to have The Last Supper on the evening of Thursday, November 30 and not eat a single morsel of food until Sunday evening, December 3. We don't have to sync together perfectly so long as it's close enough. The important thing is that we all suffer together.

I'm trying to do the opposite, which is eating regularly throughout the day. Good luck, but no thanks.

I have begun! My goal is to consume 0 calories or as close to it as possible.

I'll be taking care of myself with the usual vitamins, salts, water, zero calorie electrolyte drinks, and of course enjoying plain tea and black coffee. The presence of digestive enzymes or the absolute existence of something having entered my body should make no difference on the actual cellular effects of calorie restriction. I'm here for a good time. And also to suffer, I guess.

I had my last meal at noon today. 8 hours later and I'm already hungry. Not good, maaaan!

I'm doing something a little different this year. Whereas before I just sat at home wasting away, I'm going on a casino gambling trip this weekend. I'll save money by not having to buy expensive restaurant food for a couple days. Then I'm breaking the fast Sunday at noon with a delicious Sunday brunch buffet and all the eggs and bacon a human being can withstand. I hope the mental sluggishness I experience won't affect my game too badly.

Starting right after Thursday lunch was a great idea. I'll have to remember to do that again next time.

Interestingly enough, I didn't feel hungry until 24 hours after starting. It was my usual big meal time, so it makes sense. Other than that, no real feelings of hunger. I'm feeling just fine right now, like my body's gotten used to the situation and has already accepted it. This typically doesn't happen to me until day 2, which I guess this technically is.

I did also notice a strong increase in mental focus. It was so easy to get "in the zone" and complete tasks that are usually very easy to get distracted from. I don't know if I ever noted this before. I'll have to watch for this next time and see if I can discern a pattern. I also noticed a slight increase in creativity.

In general I feel like this year was a freebie. I skipped past all the suffering and went straight to the good part.

I definitely do NOT enjoy a mental improvement during the fast. Quite the opposite. It isn't until AFTER I gorge myself with food again that I get the mental gain. I'm basically sitting here drooling and going "Durrrrrr, me McSweeney. Food good. But no food in McSweeney right now ha hee hee".

This time around I don't feel mental sharpness. Being old might have to do with it, but I ate a lot on Thursday to avoid the worst effects and I'm still trugging along at 48 hrs.

The big thing I realized on this fast is that I am going to cut out diet soda for good. I learned incidentally in an educational video that it's metabolized to methanol in the liver, which is far more toxic than ethanol is. I drank enough quantities of diet soda that I could have liver damage, along with the microbiota disruption. Might be why I am so hopelessly fat right now.

Yesterday was good. I didn't feel hungry at all, which is what I've come to expect after having this happen every time. It's just that first day which is painful and then it's all smooth sailing after that. I think starting earlier in the day on Thursday really helped because the biggest window of suffering was overnight when I was asleep, so it's like I time-skipped past it.

During these three days, I've been naturally falling asleep earlier, getting up earlier, and feeling more well-rested in the mornings. My resting heart rate went down noticeably. I've been feeling a lot of mental focus. I don't feel "smarter". Just more focused. I guess that's still good because I've been able to get a bunch of random things done.

Some passive debuffs:

1. Overall lower stamina after 2 days. I was still able to stay active, but it lowered my motivation to take on physical labor. Not unexpected, because this happens every time.

2. Reduced cold tolerance. I found myself putting on extra layers and turning on the heat at times when I normally wouldn't need it. I wonder if body temperature is affected by the thermic effect of food.

Some strategies that worked well:

1. Reduced sugar intake leading up to the fast. I also ate low-carb and 0 sugar in the 24 hours immediately before starting the fast. I identified this a few years ago as a likely cause of the not-feeling-hungry effect after day 1. I do this every time and it works just according to plan.

2. Reduced caffeine intake leading up to the fast. This was actually unplanned, but I think it had some positive effects. I speculate that low caffeine tolerance/dependency, combined with extra restful sleep, caused the caffeine that I did take during the fast to contribute more to the mental focus that I experienced.

Overall feeling very good and wondering if maybe I ought to be doing this more often.

The sad thing is I did this fast last year close to the same time. I ate hardly anything when my dad passed away. This is causing me to relive last year a bit, but the world isn't quite as gloomy due to the lack of "atmospheric rivers" darkening the skies.

It's starting to suck though. 2 hours left.

Loki was curious if the effect of feeling sleepy after eating a big meal is stronger after fasting. I certainly felt it, along with a little of the nauseous feeling of having eaten too much. But I think it may be because I actually ate a really big meal.

Yeah, I am sleepy. It's due to insulin secretion which spikes after eating a big meal after a hunger stretch. I ate a lot of fatty foods which caused a short-term diarrhea (basiclly, what was in my small intestine for the past 3 days just dumped once the high-fat food hit the stomach, and that deposition came with a lot of water and rotten egg-smelling hydrogen sulfide).

When you fast, chyme(?) tends to linger longer in the small and large intestine. If it's wet, it came from the small intestine because the large intestine is supposed to dry out poop.
