My brother said he got up to rank 38 out of tens of thousands of people on LiquidBet, but he can only win some lame icon beside his name. Now he wants to put his skills to good use, so he's begun betting real money on games (click here if you dare!). I don't know enough about SC2 to bet on matches myself, but I want to get in on Dota 2 and League of Legends! I spend so many hours a day watching matches, so I'd feel less bad about it if I could at least make some money off of it.

Now imagine how bad I'll feel if I spend all day watching e-sports, and lose hundreds of dollars on top of that

WCS NA: All Americans have been eliminated. Only non-Koreans are Snute (Swedish player) and Moonglade (Australian). Both Zerg players. I guess we can kind of adopt Moonglade since his own natural region doesn't exist for WCS.

WCS EU: It's reported that about half their players that made it though both the Ro8 and all of challenger league are Protoss! That's a big difference compared to the half-Zerg season we saw in Korea.

WCS KR: It's been deduced by fans that PartinG vs. Life loser's match was not set to Fastest, but Faster. People noticed the time difference between the VOD and the game clock and noticed it was slower. As such, they realized that PartinG might have had a tiny leg up in terms of response time since Life's units would have had come slower (running across the map and such) and may have had contributed to his loss. GomTV released an official apology about this to PartinG, Life, and the fans and ensured they will try to never let this happen again. Both players didn't ask for a regame.

Aside from this, it seems the finals will be Soulkey vs. Innovation. Honestly, Innovation looks unbeatable this season. The only player to take games from him was Rain (Protoss player) and recently Symbol, even then he's only lose 3 games all season. Soulkey is a very strong Zerg, but his performance against SoS recently makes everyone question his play. Granted, they are teammates and likely there was a lot of mindgames, but that was a crazy bad play.

Blizzard is talking about making a change to the Warp Prism to give it the speed boost as a free upgrade from the start. Not sure I like the idea overall but it sparked a pretty nice conversation on Meta discussing Protoss in general. It's a pretty nice insight to the race. How its highly build order based and how each pro basically developed their own style, but makes them very stylized and ultimately easier to defeat when you are playing in a tournament with preparation (i.e. WCS).

Kuno and I watched the finals for WCS Korea (GSL Code S). Soulkey vs. Innovation. Everyone knows in their mind Innovation, the strongest Terran we've ever seen will win, but we Zerg want in our hearts for Soulkey to win.

Spoiler: show
Innovation wins the first 3 of 7. It looks bad. I'm really for his 4th victory so I can go to sleep. IT NEVER COMES. Soulkey does a total turn around. Craziest shit ever. Never has someone turned a game around like this in all of GSL history.

Okay, so each region of WCS has finished their finals.

WCS KR - Soulkey - Zerg
WCS NA - Hero - Protoss
WCS EU - MVP - Terran

Going into WCS Global is going to be like 13 Koreans and 3 Europeans. No Americans.

This reminds me of the international Go / Baduk / Weiqi scene, where pretty much every single tournament is won by either Korea, China, or Japan and where the vast, vast majority of such tournaments have got, like, all of 5% or fewer representation from outside of those three nations in the first round of the tournament. And usually when a nation with a mostly Caucasian populace is representing, it's a European nation, not a North American one.

From which country or countries do the Europeans hail?

German, Ukrainian, and French.

In the opening 32 of WCS NA, we had 16 Americans (North and South), 1 Chinese, 1 Australian, 1 Swedish, and 13 Koreans. It's kind of painful to see that not a single American can represent America in the Global finals.

50% of the opening round was from the western hemisphere ... and not a single one of them remains. ^^; Ouch. Yeah ... it's a lot like Go. Always the East China Sea neighbors.

Of the three offerings, I guess I'll be rooting arbitrarily in the order of France > Germany > the Ukraine > Korea. My expectation is, of course, that a Korean will take 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place. ^^; But I'll be rooting for a European upset!

The French player is Stephano, who has the 4th highest monetary winnings in all of SC2 and the highest of non-Koreans, so he actually has a decent chance to take the global championships.

Also, he's planning to retire in August, so I'm sure he has big plans to end on a big bang.

You can no longer fall out of your league.

Yesterday the locked the ladder, but it seems they're also making a change to it. You can no longer lose enough to fall out of whichever league you're in. It is still believed you can fall out of Grand Masters or possibly Masters but the others won't kick you out for a losing streak.

Not sure how I feel about this. It makes it easier to go up rankings if you can't fall too far just by losing, but if you got lucky and were ranked above your skill, it can be very frustrating to just constantly lose because you're placed too high. I guess someone could just use Leave League and redo their placement matches.

WCS Global Finals

Tonight at 9PM. Very early compared to the normal 4AM the Koreans use.

New Maps for Season 4

Lol that 2 of the new maps added in Season 3 are being removed for Season 4.

Red City has been seen on GSL for a while, so no surprise there. The new Newkirk Precinct TE looks better than the old one. No Watchtowers, but also no empty space. Three lanes of attack instead of two. Nice changes. Korhal Sky Island... wut? It's not perfectly symmetrical for all four locations, so it's going to be pretty strange but also interesting.

Also, Blizzard is watching Hellbat drops, considering changes.

Hopefully they will make changes, although at the moment it's still sit-and-wait.

It took me over 100 games to claw my way out of Platinum this season, but I finally did it after winning 11 games in a row. I talked with Loki about developing some new nonsense to be used in PvP matchups, and I've vastly improved my winning %. What I do is go blink stalkers/dark templars, and if the game doesn't end right there with my DTs hitting his minerals, I build a robo for the sole purpose of getting an observer, then I concentrate on sniping the enemy observer in every fight so my DTs have free reign. Hey, I may be a Diamond shitter, but at least I can say I have never copied a pro's build, everything is of my own invention (and highly inefficient because of that, I reckon).

I was complaining to Loki about how the level of skill has risen too much, and because of that it's unlikely for me to ever make Master League now. High Platinum is like Master League from two years ago. To illustrate my point, in my last match I managed to beat this guy:

http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/profile/.../2/Rchemistry/

I'm being matched up against people who were Grandmaster League in 2011!

Dreamhack Summer 2013 has ended. Great matches.

Spoiler: show
In an absolute surprise upset, Stardust, a player relatively unknown to most people has won Dreamhack Summer 2013, crushing GSL Finalist Hyun, Sweden loval Sjow, and then the Tyrant Zerg of Brood Wars Jaedong! The final two games were absolutely exciting as both times Jaedong had a more powerful army, but lost all of his structures. If you haven't seen these matches, you've just missed a great set of games! Also, Stardust is a Protoss player!
