Ash was confirmed 6 years old in the flashback. Interesting enough he missed the summer camp and was sad, so that means he was 7 when he went to summer camp and met Serena. I’m really surprised they kept continuity with XY’s backstory.

So we're seven episodes in and here's my impression of this series: a lot happens, but it happens in a boring, dull way.

I want to make a comparison to a PreCure show but I honestly couldn't think of one boring like this. In fact, I've seen a show like this in the past that was a tiresome drag but I can't put my finger on it. I'd have to dig through the old posts in the recommendation thread to find it.

Is the show bad? Technically, no. There's no true filler, just filler-like material. To really get down to why this is a dull show, I'd have to break it down:

Go: Pokemon's new protagonist

Ash has been replaced and I don't care what anyone says. He has very little dialogue and when he says stuff it's either stating the obvious, expressing support or making a butt monkey joke. He doesn't really have good "chemistry" with Go, in that the two are convincing best friends. They contrast each other enough that they're not boring themselves, but their adventures are.

These first seven episodes have been mostly about Go. Getting his first Pokemon, learning to love catching, then learning to love battles. For him, this is great development with lower stakes, but Ash doesn't have to be here. In fact, his presence adds nothing since he offer very little in the mentorship department.

I don't like that Pokemon Master Ash is demoted to an anonymous side character here. I would have him being celebrity worshiped everywhere, but a little recognition of who he is would help integrate him into the story more. For now, he's some guy who hangs around Go, and doesn't even provide good sidekick material for Go.

Boring one-off adventures

Going to certain exotic lands researching strange phenomenon and Pokemon, a la Indiana Jones isn't a bad premise for SS. It got off to a good start with the Galar mini-arc in SS003-SS004, requiring Ash-Go to fly to Wyndon then take a train down to the Wild Area since there's no other airport in Galar. But the Scorbunny plot, and later Snorlax plot, was uninteresting and took focus away from Ash-Go who should drive the episode's entertainment value. When you have fewer characters, those characters need to do more and not take a backseat to some plot.

However, starting with SS007, we have plane hopping to different regions and it's whiplash. Ash travels to Hoenn to compete in a small-scale tournament, and travels all the way to Sinnoh to return a lost Piplup instead of...I dunno, calling the Sinnoh Police and letting them know a Piplup was lost in Kanto? This feels completely meandering since the character development beats could be done in another way.

For example, if all it took was watching Ash win a Pokemon Battle for Go to become interesting, did Go really need to go to Hoenn for it? Honestly, it feels like Ash is in another world compared to Sun/Moon or even the animes before, due to the change in city design, Ash's art design, and the lack of direct continuity.

I'm not asking for fanservice here, I'd just like Ash, former Pokemon protagonist, be upgraded at least to co-protagonist and not be this series Brock. Because he's basically Brock, and that sucks.

Strongly considering dropping this. We're 13 episodes in and pretty much the whole run has been boring and clumsy.

The dynamax battle here helped illustrate that.

So it's shaping up for Ash's SS team to be:

Pikachu
Mr. Mime
Dragonite
Gengar
Lugia

Is that team better than his Alola one? I think at minimum it's better than Kalos, unless you want to argue Ash-Greninja is stronger than a Lugia.

Almost a year in and this anime has pretty much failed. I'm really disappointed, the premise is strong but the execution might be the worst since Johto.

Mewtwo's back. Not "a", "the".

I guess the dumb dogs aren't enough to beat Eternatus, we need two Psychic-type legendaries to help out.

So, in spite of 22 years and 800+ new Pokemon, it looks like Gen 1 Mewtwo is still the strongest Pokemon in the anime.

This is amazing. We finally got an Ash episode where he's treated like a Champion, and does Champion stuff like mentor and give advice.

Yo, the writers summoned the Ghost of Shudo for this episode. Glad to see the new anime is improving, if incrementally.

It's no SM but it's no XY either. At least, not until next week, har har.

The new episodes have me feel like I'm playing UPN: The Game II, I can't place why exactly.

Out of curiosity do you feel this series has gotten better? In the first year it felt rough since it seems like the writers themselves had no idea what they wanted this saga of the anime to be, but over the 2021 year of episodes it feels like the show has improved quite a bit.

A lot still don't like Go's random catching goal, but there has been a bit better development for Ash, Koharu, more returning characters from past seasons, and more focus on Galar characters in general.

Of course it has the usual flaws every Pokemon anime saga has (sometimes there's way too much boring/tedious filler eps where nothing much happens), but I think its improved. There are also DP specials that are amazon prime exclusive in Japan featuring a sequel to the Team Galactic arc from DP, with Dawn and Brock returning, Cynthia included, and a tie-in to the Arceus game. You can watch them subbed on the usual sites.

Also I think the animation in general has improved a bit for battles, Covid-19 hit anime studios hard right around the time this saga started so you can see how rough the battle animation was in the first year, but it seems like it recovered.

PM isn't without its merits, but for me it's one of the worst Pokemon series, sitting right above early (pre-Hoenn League) AG. Still.

If I were to summarize PM in one word, it's "souless". Ash is arguably competing at the highest level of his career, with his strongest team EVER, and it doesn't have any weight or magnanimity, it feels like a sideshow. The forced rivalry with Saitou was boring and the battles aren't satisfying at all because Saitou is a bland waifu-bait character that the writers didn't even dignify us with shipping moments. Moreover, she represented Galarwank, which is marching onward with Marnie being in the Hyper-class for some reason. The obnoxious meta shilling of Galar that didn't exist before this series is a major turnoff when the series tries to present the World Championships as cosmopolitan.

I'd say Ash's Pokemon (sans Gengar) also lack the personality of the SM team. They are basically one trait+ gimmicks, like the BW and XY teams. Even Gengar acts like a stereotypical Gengar, a goofball who is at times unsure of himself. This leads to battles without a lot of emotional investment unless you are already familiar with a character as was the case with Volkner.

Gou isn't a bad character, but he's boring. He's functionally Ash's son and is meant to appeal to the Go-style approach to the franchise, and that's fine. But his catches are rarely fun and the Project Mew stuff is boring and also contrived (Gou's childhood goal is to find Mew, yet there's a team specifically dedicated to finding Mew and not Mythicals in general, and they have games for him, how convenient).

Koharu though sucks. She's barely better than Togepi Misty.

The music is also mostly awful, gacha Team Rocket is cynical and obnoxious, the comedy is absent more often than not. It's mechanical, not magical. A dull show.

The best parts are the Pokemon Masters style updates to the character bios. Like finding out what happened to Dawn since DP was more interesting than Dawn's actual reappearance. Same goes for Iris.

Korrina was the one exception, as her inclusion was more than just fanservice, she served a role to help Ash on the road to Mega Evolution. But most of the other cameos are just that, cameos. Shallow fanservice. Frosting on a cake that isn't well baked.
