Sunflora Summershine Cup Round 1 - EpicSquirtle vs CyberBlastoise [FINISHED]

Bill Darius and Jake Eclair approached the Stardust Fields where Levin and Zion awaited them. The Metagross scanned each fighter in silence, collecting all the precious data his Trainer would later need for his own endeavors.

Summershine Cup was just starting and maybe the ultimate victory would smile upon one of these two competitors: the less experienced Electric-Type specialist, Jake, or the veteran who seemed more in tune with the Water-Type, Bill.

Bill sent out his Pokemon, Lennie, not the strongest Pokemon in his arsenal, not really even the smartest, although he is the only one on his team capable of speaking to him verbally. But he was ready to give it his all, the opponent sent out a Corphish, Bill hadn't seen one personally but he did hear about Crawdaunt and wanted one for himself. Either way, Lennie was slow and none of his moves sped it up, so he'd have that against the Corphish.

"Okay, Lennie, start things off with a Curse, follow it up with a Future Sight!" he called out.

"Uhm.....okay!" the Slowpoke replied as it readied it moves.....or was thinking about a sandwich, Bill wasn't a mindreader and he was thankful that he wasn't in this case.

It was the first round in the Summershine Cup! Though Jake was an Electric type specialist, he had decided to use one of his non Electric type Pokemon instead. The Pokemon, in question, was one of Jake's earliest received Pokemon, Bubbles.
While Jake had seen his Ambipom and Galvantula rise in power, Bubbles started to fall behind. Which was exactly why he had chosen to use the Corphish!

His first opponent would be Bill. Jake hadn't heard of him before, but he knew never to under estimate his opponent.
"You ready Bubbles?" Jake asked the Corphish beside him. Bubbles gave a brief nod before scuttling onto the battlefield. Bill meanwhile, sent out a Slowpoke.
"A Slowpoke huh? This might be a pretty tough fight." The teen murmured.
Raring to go, Bubbles clacked her pincers a couple times.

"Alright Bubbles, let's start with Toxic! Then use Dragon Dance, and follow up with an X-Scissor!" Jake ordered.

ROUND 1

Slowpoke and Corphish, two Water Pokemon whose only similarity was indeed their Type, stared at each other - Jake's partner was ready to go, but there was no telling whether Bill's felt the same way. He could be either completely focused on the task at hand, or not even sure what he was doing out here in the first place - superior Psychic prowess, in his case, came with a price.

Not willing to stand idly and figure out Lennie's intentions, Bubbles moves first with a tactical move; the Toxic blob seeps inside Lennie's pores, and it's a matter of time before the toxins begin to exert their effect - Lennie is Badly Poisoned!. Unfortunately for Bill, this will force Lennie to do something he isn't particularly fond off - hurry up!

But the Slowpoke doesn't seem inclined to do so. Instead, he slowly starts bulking up, increasing his muscle mass at further expense of his already underdeveloped reflexes - this renders him both physically stronger and more resilient, but even slower than his opponent, something Bill has no doubt already anticipated. Bubbles does the opposite, powering up with dragon aura that renders him both stronger and quicker, further increasing the speed gap between the two. The Corphish lungs forward at incredible speed and hits hard with a super-effective cross slash from his twin pincers, but if Lennie feels pain in any way, we probably won't find out for a while...

What Lennie does feel is a disturbance in the natural forces; his eyes glow blue anticipating a great catastrophe, one that will no doubt befall Bubbles very soon!

Jake is keeping the pressure up, but Bill's Pokemon is taking his time. Can he afford to do that for much longer, will his strategy pay off or will the duo have to adjust now?

"Way to go!" Jake cheered as Bubbles X-Scissor managed to hit it's mark. In retaliation, the Slowpoke's eyes starting glowing blue.... but nothing seemed to happen.
"That was weird, what kind of an attack was that?" Jake thought to himself. Deciding not to dwell on it, the teen began his next commands for Bubbles.
"Let's keep this up Bubbles! Let's go for another Dragon Dance! Then follow onward with an X-Scissor!

Okay then, Lennie, use Disable on that X-Scissor, follow it up with Confusion, followed by Yawn!

ROUND 2

Jake seems to have found Lennie's weakness, and the move that will lead him to victory. After all, Bubbles' pincers are sharp, and that X-Scissor is especially damaging to Psychic-Types such as Slowpoke.

Meanwhile, Bill is taking a more defensive approach; Lennie isn't going to outspeed Bubbles any time soon, so playing to the Slowpoke's strengths is his best bet - and among those, countering the opponent's moves is a pivotal part of the duo's strategy.

Before he carries out further punishment, Bubbles takes time to power up a little more, further widening the gap in speed and physical strength between himself and the foe. Tapping into the latent draconic potential in his cells, the Corphish sharpens his aggressive instincts to make himself even more powerful and agile, as he is covered in a now-familiar blue aura. Lennie, meanwhile, watches, rendered even slower than his usual self by the previous Curse.

Bubbles suddenly jolts forward, pincers wide open and aiming for the opponent's throat! The Corphish travels faster than ever before, covering more ground than one would think an aquatic Pokemon capable. He draws closer and closer to Lennie, ready to strike... but simply darts past him without landing any kind of hit whatsoever!

The Water-Type stares at his own pincers in confusion, either having forgotten what he was supposed to do, or stunned that he couldn't do it. Either way, fact remains: X-Scissor has been Disabled!
Bubbles finds himself at a loss, having lost his primary means of offense. He looks in alarm at Jake, hoping his Trainer has some sort of alternative, because it doesn't seem like he's going to be able to resort to X-Scissor for a while!

Meanwhile, this is Lennie's chance. He focuses and stares unblinking at his opponent, and soon afterwards, Bubbles is haunted by a severe migraine that makes him wince in pain! But perhaps the effort of conjuring that Confusion proves too strenuous, or perhaps just too boring, and Lennie soon loses interest in it - in fact, he Yawns loudly to signal his boredom... something Bubbles finds himself mimicking not long after! Lennie's grogginess is incredibly contagious, and Bubbles knows that before long, he's going to fall into a deep, tempting slumber...

While the Corphish struggles to remain awake, Lennie lets out a low-pitched growl, manifesting his discomfort at the poison in his body, which is starting to exert its effects... But overall, Bill has turned this round in his favor admirably! Bubbles is bound to fall asleep very soon, and his main weapon has now been rendered useless - does Jake have anything else up his sleeve?

Okay, Lennie, now it's time to go on the offense. Start things off with another Confusion, then follow it up with a Headbutt.

Alright Bubbles, hang in there! Show them what you've got with your Strength attack! Then go for a Harden!

ROUND 3

Not one to be deterred by the setback that is a loss of X-Scissor, Jake is quick to find a way around the newfound limitation: intent on capitalizing on his Corphish’s superior speed, he orders a Strength assault to make the most of Dragon Dance’s boost. Bill, in turn, decides to go on the offensive now that the primary threat to Lennie’s health is Disabled.

Bubbles once again goes first, unsurprisingly, and looks to get revenge on Lennie for the trickery that cost him his ace move. Moving fast and with a purpose, the Corphish runs straight at its foe while flexing its muscles, while the Slowpoke looks on casually, processing his Trainer’s instructions still. Bubbles grabs Lennie’s front legs and hoists it up in the air in an incredible display of power, then tosses it away like it would a boulder! The Slowpoke crashes down hard against the floor, but all parties know it’ll only be able to process the actual pain a bit later…

The Psychic Pokemon gets back up, having finally interpreted Bill’s set of commands. Its eyes glow blue and Bubbles finds itself assaulted by a monstrous migraine, which makes it cry in and flail about while it remains under Lennie’s mental influence. Unwilling to release its psychic hold, the Slowpoke slowly walks up to Jake’s partner, and once it’s in close range, rams its head against Bubbles’ torso with as much force as Curse grants it!

Jake watches as his Corphish is sent tumbling across the grassy floor of the makeshift arena, and shudders at the prospect of Bubbles flinching from the sheer brutality of the impact. However, his trusty partner is quick to get back up and further enhances its battle condition, this time by boosting its Defense through hardening its shell. Snapping its pincers at Lennie, in a fruitless attempt at intimidation, Bubbles nevertheless indicates it has a lot left in the tank. The Slowpoke doesn’t look the least bit threatened, and the passive look on its face doesn’t convey any sign of fatigue either, despite wincing briefly as poison continues to run through its veins, exerting amplified effects from last round...

Who’s going to claim the upper hand?

ROUND 4

Jake and Corphish look on, the latter snapping its pincers in defiance… but Lenny isn’t having any more of this match and not even Billy can tell him otherwise. The Slowpoke rests peacefully on the grassy floor, despite supposedly being smack in the heat of battle – and his unwillingness to continue further leaves Billy in quite a pinch. In fact, the match has been going on for so long without any reaction from the sleeping Psychic-Type that Levin even left the battle and the entire region behind in the meantime, already well on his path across another land by the time a replacement referee arrives to essentially make official what has been apparent for quite some time:

“Bill and Lennie are disqualified from the Summershine Cup due to inactivity. The winners, and moving on to the next round, are Jake and Bubbles!”

It happens sometimes, and often it can’t even be blamed on the Trainer, as is the case. Circumstances beyond his control have put Bill out of the first edition of Summershine Cup, but he will no doubt be back in full force to avenge the loss in the near future. Meanwhile, Jake establishes himself as the first Trainer to advance in the tournament; the lingering question is, who will he and his trusty Corphish be facing in the second round?

Having talked it over with CyberBlastoise, we mutually agreed I could move on with the match and, effectively, disqualify him. It's hardly the most exciting conclusion, but rules are in place for a reason and, as such, EpicSquirtle moves on. I can't wait to see if Bubbles proves himself worthy of having made it to the second round! Are you up to the challenge, Mr. Jake Eclair? ;)
