Ah. Not really a thing in the UK, to my knowledge - here if you're undergoing surgery, you're in hospital. I mean if you're just down to like, root canal level of minor then sure it can happen elsewhere, but even when I had a few teeth out that was in hospital. Rivers was having throat surgery, struck me as wtf she could possibly be anywhere else.

Colour me slightly more enlightened than I was before reading your post. Ta!

I'm not really sure where I should post this. It could potentially fit in three topics.

I was researching this website for info on supernatural beings. I figured it would be scholastic in the same way the hororscope websites I've consulted have presented their material. It seemed such as far down as the first paragraph of each article.

Here's the entry on Santa Claus.

The man who made Christmas what it is today is of course the most famous supernatural being of all time known as Santa Claus.
So far so good.

His family later moved to Myra where he became known as Nicholas of Myra.
A bit of supernatural conspiracy theory thrown in there (angels obscured Santa's birthday!) but still, highly plausible origin story. I don't know enough about Santa Claus to be surprised if it's suggested he was actually born in the Middle East.

One was Nicholas, and the other was Claudius. He would later become the notoriously evil Anti-Claus who rules over Dark Christmas while actively trying to thwart Christmas.
Little Bo Beep has lost her mind. Where is this train headed?

This makes me think like the writer was a boy training to be a priest at some iron-fisted monastery. His daydreams would involve becoming the Bishop without having to tend to the fields and fill buckets of water.

By today's standard it would be considered stalking. With each day jealously grew over how beloved his brother was by the masses. On December 6th Nicholas was alone at a church in Myra praying before a statue of Jesus when Claude appeared from the shadows to reveal his identity to Nicholas. Nicholas believed he was sincere but Claude burst into a tirade about how his entire rotten life was Nicholas's fault. Claude suddenly pulled out a mystical sword of evil made of coal, and thrust through Nicholas's heart. The only ways known to kill an Immortal are through beheading, and complete incineration by fire. However this special sword was able to accomplish that. Before Nicholas collapsed on the floor his final words were," Brother I love you, and I forgive you." Upon the death of Nicholas Claude officially became the Anti-Claus, and the rest of his Angelic DNA faded into nothingness to be replaced by Demonic DNA.
It's just hit me that "Immortals" actually refers to the guys seen in Highlander, and isn't a rather generic term for a certain type of supernatural being,

May I review your credentials in quantum physics?

Nicholas awoke in a dark church crypt where his dead body lie. Apparently DNA had been taken from the body to create a new body for Nicholas. It's unknown why his soul wasn't reanimated in his old body. He was in essence re-born now as a rare half Archangel imbued with extra special Heavenly powers. Nicholas then crashed triumphantly through the stone walls of the crypt ready to clean up the evils of the planet. At that moment his parents appeared to him as brightly lit apparitions who dubbed him Santa Claus. Santa meaning Saint since Heaven, and the church had just made him Saint Nicholas. Claus was a shortening of Nicholas since it was spelled, and pronounced differently back then. They bid him farewell, and sealed up the crypt. To this day St. Nicks old bones still reside in the mystic crypt, and it's rumored that it might be the only thing that can hurt Santa along with possibly the evil sword of coal wielded by the Anti-Claus.
I think we've seen enough.

Angel-human forbidden romance. A spiteful twin brother separated at birth. A magic sword forged out of black coal. Parallel universes and resurrection through cloning. Joy to the world and the spread of Christmas spirit.

My word, this festive story has everything.

And that was just the introduction.

St. Nicholas was Turkish. That's sort of Middle East, though it has more Western trappings to be honest. Not to rain on your parade of course!

If the writer of that Santa Claus story isn't writing movies/books/games, there's no justice in this world.

5-year old boy: I live today for the thrill of trying to win the Loto-ID again tomorrow!
Woman: Oh, aren't you a good boy! That's right! We can only try once a day!

Just overheard this conversation in game on my way out of the Loto-ID Center in Lumiose City. Disturbed by the fact that a 5-year old is displaying such a strong addiction to gambling. (He lives today for the thrill of playing tomorrow? ) Disturbed by the adult's encouraging response. Sure, she's coaxing him away from fixating on it anymore today ... but she isn't discouraging him from continuing to live for gambling either! What the fuck? O_o

Pokémon Y. I don't mind having casinos in children's video games (DAAAMN YOU, EUROPE! ) but I don't think this blasé encouraging approach is appropriate either. It just feels weird to have a small child expressing that he lives for the thrill of gambling. Reminds me of the episode of The Critic where Humphrey the Hippo teaches the kids about smoking:

Perhaps I'm biased, having had to do some work on gambling policy I am firmly of the belief that the gambling industry is a parasite that ruins the lives of people who need help.

I agree that the gambling industry takes advantage of those who are most in need of a get rich quick solution to their financial woes. That stated, I have absolutely no qualms with most of the games themselves that are attributed to gambling. Blackjack, poker, Roulette: each of these can be fun little minigames in a video game, including a children's video game. No stakes of real consequence, and you can even engineer it to where there are functionally zero stakes of any consequence as the rules favor the player over the house. (A good example of this is the original New Super Mario Bros. title for Nintendo DS which featured, amongst its many minigames, a Blackjack table where the payout was disproportionately high to the maximum bet you could place and to the odds of beating the dealer on any given hand. In such a game, a player couldn't even get sucked into the trap of desperately trying to win back their fictional money, never mind their real money, as NSMB Blackjack was in the long run a money-generating machine.) I don't see their inclusion in children's games as Joe Camel-esque. If we want to go down that road, then I feel we have to ban all card games from children's lives since, by the power of association, it's only a hop, skip and a jump from Old Maid to Poker. I think that's a bit much. Poker as a game itself -- a game where there are winners and losers based on lucky draws, prediction, and various other non-monetary factors -- is perfectly innocuous. It's the fact that money is introduced to the game that transforms it into gambling. You could just as easily turn the Pokémon video games into gambling that same way. (Imagine if Worlds 2014 were treated like horseracing, with bookies taking bets on who would win. You can easily imagine it, because it could have easily been done had people wanted to. You can turn just about any contest into an opportunity for gambling.)
