Whole milk.

I've always fancied myself as a milk fan; from fifth grade to tenth grade, I drank an average of a gallon ever 1.5 days and could consume one in less than two minutes. When my lactose intolerance set in, I still consumed a great deal of things from milk products, suffering the pain because the stuff tastes so terrific.

The catch though was this was never with whole milk. It was almost always skim, at rare times low fat (which wasn't much different). I'd only taste whole milk in various ice creams and in chocolate milks, but I never drank the stuff straight and haven't touched it in years outside of small ice cream forms.

By sheer accident, or rather, befuddlement (as has been happening recently), my mother purchased whole milk instead of the usual skim. I learned after watching a Discovery Channel show about hot dogs about international competitive eating competitions, and read about the "milk gallon challenge". Drink under an hour, hold for an hour? Easy peasy I thinks! My lactose intolerance surely can't stand up to the fortuitous iron-rimmed stomach and digestive tract of mine, having trained since elementary school!

But just to test things out, and having already poured my cereal, I dunked it in whole milk and ate a couple spoonfuls. I promptly threw the bowl out, much to my dismay (I hate waste) - the stuff is inconsumable. I can't believe how anyone could drink it - it tastes like skim but lacks the viscosity of cream, and instead feels literally like one is drinking skim mixed in with liquid lard. That psychological horror was enough of an impairment as is.

A few seconds after the bite, I felt something bad in my belly and decided to stop - now, far later, I'm getting some of the worst stomach pains I've gone through. It feels like a fist is clamping down on my guts while at the same time I'm a gigantic balloon - it's a horrible sensation.

In short? Soy makes sense. I'm glad I made the switch - milk is now too hardcore for me to handle.

Re: Whole milk.

"Soy makes sense?" O_o; Okay, Mr. Soy Propaganda Man. I've got one for you: "Soy Sucks." :P

Whole milk is fine, and doesn't taste or feel that different than 2%.

Skim milk is "watered-down milk," but I can drink it. It's not desirable, though.

And what you really ought to imagine is unpasteurized whole milk. Because the whole milk you drank was likely from the grocery and still tasted like "normal milk" despite your lard comments. Real whole milk (i.e. fresh from the udder) tastes really bizarre and like a whole different drink. Like ... I'd say that real from-the-udder milk is about as mistakable for 2% milk as is Coca-Cola for 2%. It's that much a different drink. It's really wild.

Anyway, sorry to hear about your stomach. And sorry to hear you had a bad experience with whole milk (which I prefer to skim). And sorry to hear your mom's going senile. O_o

Whole milk is the only kind I can drink! I've tried the various other kinds and can easily tell the difference cause they're all nasty by comparison!

Re: Whole milk.

The only people I knew who ever drank whole milk IRL were all overweight guys. Back when I could drink cow's milk even 2% was gross to me. I never ever tried whole milk, but I assume it would just be that much worse.

I second the Soy-positive sentiment!

There is some similarity between the richness of 2% and whole, but there's something about whole that makes it harder to swallow and gives it this foul after-taste that doesn't go away. It also gives off the bad vibe of one drinking a very fattening liquid; unlike eating a very fatty food, drinking a liquid like that grosses me out for some reason (same case with eating animal fat off of some kind of dish or something similar).

...

On another note, happy birthday, Kasumi!

Aww thanks Dopple :-) Very few people remembered that it was my birthday yesterday (which is kind of fun).

I don't think he remembered as much as he saw it on the front page of the forums. XP

Happy birthday btw. ^^

Re: Whole milk.

That's how it is for 99% of the birthdays here though. Nobody remembers when anyone's birthday is ... except maybe my fake one (7/14) since I make such a big deal out of every year. Someone's gotta show France some love!

KV, I'd wish you a happy birthday, but I feel bad for not noticing and being late. -_-; I'll ... figure something out. lol

I'm bumping this topic during my Misc search because it's absolutely hilarious in hindsight, considering I'm drinking nothing but whole milk now as part of my workout diet!

Sucks to be you, 2008 me! I can totally chug that ship now!

Big Pimp Krillin did!

My eating problems are a big reason why my workout jacks don't give me stellar returns, supposedly. I'm still in the neighbourhood of 2K calories but I need to fall to 1-1.5K and be Spartan about it once I clear my pantry of carbs.

The primary reason I'd say is whole milk is more filling and cheaper on a per-volume basis. Like, when I was at the breakfast room in the hospital, I could buy two pints of lowfat for what was essentially $5, or one pint of whole for $2. The calorie count was the same. So in the end, and I'd still be thirsty after the lowfat.

Another issue was I had a pretty foul tasting protein mix, that was just bleh with lowfat milk, to the point I never drank it. So I went back with whole - effectively, protein is just the whey from milk taken out, so adding everything back restores it to normal form - and it became drinkable.

Certainly, if soy were still available to me, I'd tap the heck out of those tetra bricks! But the only soy to me is solid tofu (which is good, cheap, and efficient) and soymilk itself actually has soda-like calories to it. It's like a more expensive, poorer version of a real protein shake, although I will say soymilk was waaaaay more filling than a non-whole protein shake.

Rank of filling:

Whole protein shake > whole milk > soymilk > lowfat protein shake > lowfat milk > Diet Powerade > water > Diet Soda > non-fat protein shake > non-fat milk

You might ask why non-fat milk gets a lower mark than water. It's because fat is filling, and sugar is dehydrating and so takes away from that. Non-fat milk effectively has the highest sugar to water ratio of these drinks without the fat to compensate out for it. So all it does is dehydrate you, worse than diet soda which also dehydrates but not quite as badly.

I drink sometimes whole milk at a farm. That tastes way better than any milk from the supermarket because this is very fresh. It has only been in a cooler, that's all.
Just writing about it makes me want to drink some now.

Poem with a smile
Spoiler: show

Smiling is infectious
you catch it like a flu
when someone smiled at me today
I started smiling too

I passed around the corner
and noticed with a grin
when someone smiled back at me
I'd passed it on to him

I thought about my smile
and realised its worth
a single smile, just like mine
could travel around the earth

So if you feel a smile begin
don't leave in undetected
lets start an epidemic now
and get the world infected
