ASB has a sweepstake running on Serebii, rigged so that if England does well we all get masses of free money. This probably indicates to you how much I think England will do well.

Surprised we didn't have a thread already. (And if we do, apologies for being blind as a bat.) If people would like to discuss the games and controversies that have already passed, feel free. I watched my first game earlier today so I figured I'd weigh in ever so slightly.

England seemed to be pretty decent right on up until the minutes before Italy scored their second goal. From that point forward, they played like England usually does -- pro-level compared with smaller football teams at home but only mid-level compared with mainland Europe's best national teams.

It seems like the world has warmed up to Italy's soccer team again come 2014, but I still haven't forgotten or forgiven the asshole team of 2006. Plus I root for England, France, Germany, and Denmark each before I root for Italy. But I gotta say: some of the Italians seemed like fun, nice players. More games like this one may win me over to forgive the days of 2006.

Given how well Costa Rica performed against Uruguay, and given Uruguay's historical record as a Top 4 team, I think it's safe to say that England has been sent packing with their loss to Italy. They might have expected this loss, I'll give you that, but if they were planning on dual wins against Uruguay and Costa Rica, they're going to have to think again.

If Portugal was anything more than Cristiano Ronaldo + 10, I might be inclined to watch the games. As it is, I have little interest to watch my nation play the World Cup with half a line-up I've barely heard of before. Oh, and those two strikers... no way I'll ever be convinced that Helder Postiga and Hugo Almeida are the best in all of Portugal for that position.

A bit of a shame really, I used to love this kind of competition up until a few years ago. Right now all I watch is the national league.

Nah, Zidane had Rock Head. No recoil damage for Zinedine. Only damage to Materazzi's sternum, ego, and legacy.

I'm working at a Mexican restaurant so I get to see every game that's on while I'm working. Everyone at my work is also wearing jerseys instead of their usual uniforms for the length of the tournament, which means I get to go buy one tomorrow!

Yeah so was the one for Mexico's first game. The team that should have won did end up winning in both cases (Brazil and Mexico) but if the groups come down to goal difference then that could definitely be influential. Other than those two games I don't think there's been much reffing controversy.

The ref in the England-Italy game failed to get out of the way at one point and actually tripped up Gerrard, but was otherwise decent.

So turns out there's been five come-from-behind wins this World Cup, most recent being Switzerland just beating Ecuador. At the 2010 edition there were only three such wins.

The teams in general seem to be more rattleable by goals scored than in previous World Cups. While this is not an altogether uncommon occurrence in soccer, it's not exactly happens-every-game common either to have Team A score and then to have either a) Team B score two minutes later or b) Team A score yet again two minutes later. But this has happened multiple times in the 2014 World Cup preliminary round. I saw it happen with my own two eyes with England and Italy yesterday. (Italy scored 1-0, then England tied it up 1-1 literally one to two minutes later.) I missed it with Japan and the Ivory Coast -- I'd been watching that game off and on for like fifty minutes and then tuned out because I figured there was no chance for the Côte d'Ivoire to score two goals on Japan before Japan would score another goal or two themselves. Little did I know that at the 64-minute mark the Ivory Coastians would score their first goal ... and then two minutes later would score their second. You're saying it happened with Switzerland and Honduras. (Didn't watch that one.) And similar occurrences have happened in other games too, not just these three.

When a goal is scored, it's important as the scoring team to not get cocky and to instead try to psych yourself into behaving like the score is still tied up; and it's important as the trailing team to not get too depressed about it, to not get too focused on the "monumental challenge" of scoring two goals before the enemy team can score just one more. But it seems like neither the scorers nor the scored-againsts are doing a good job of this this year. Someone scores a goal and it's almost become expected that a second goal will soon follow, the only question being which of the two teams will score it.

Conversation with brother:

Me: "Switzerland is probably going to win."

Him: "No, they couldn't score a goal if it was an open net with no defenders."

*Cue him cheering as Ecuador scores and rubbing it in my face*

Well I was right in the end.

Well, the Swiss come-from-behind win wasn't two goals one right after the other. Ecuador scored in the first half, and Switzerland's first goal was very early on in the second half, the 46th or 47th minute. Their second goal didn't come until stoppage time: the 93rd minute. You are right in that there have been a lot of quick goals in succession though. In the Ivory Coast-Japan game, Ivory Coast had just subbed in Didier Drogba and all their fans went nuts- he's like a living legend for them. Must've motivated the team because they scored their two goals only 100 seconds apart. Pretty neat stuff.

Meanwhile, I've been watching e-sports this weekend, where the worst injury possible is carpal tunnel.

>In both games where referees made mistakes, the team who should have won ended up winning

Oh boy do I disagree with this.

Croatia played a blinder against Brazil, and frankly the player who was most influential for Brazil both cheated horrifically and should have been given a red card before he even had a chance to score the goals he did.

Yeah Croatia deserved to win but even on 10 men Brazil could have done it.

Oh man Spain have a serious chance of going out of the competition in the next hour. This is great.

The Spanish team is so boring to watch though. It was a real problem with the last World Cup - all of their matches were dull, 1-0 snoozefests where they'd score a goal and then use their 60-70%+ of the possession to just sit on the ball in midfield and do nothing. No-one really enjoyed watching Spain play well and it was bad for the sport.

Netherlands, on the other hand, is quite content with their current position.

US faces Portugal on Sunday. Not exactly thrilled.

US vs Portugal could be pretty interesting, especially if Ronaldo can't play (as is looking likely). I'm hoping the US can at least hold a draw.
