Geoffrey Chaucer is widely considered one of the most important men in the development of the English language...but I'm sorry he is a sorry sow at spelling.

If you account for 1) standardization of spelling in the 19th century and 2) how even the most agreed-upon spellings back then would have been spelled differently from how they're spelled today, it's actually surprising how close Middle English can be sometimes to Modern English. Case in point, my amateur attempt at sprucing up Chaucer's spelling while leaving the sounds and grammar of his language intact:

Quote:
Now wol I pray meekly every discrete person that readeth or heareth this little treatise.
Not sure if wol is supposed to be "will" or not. I can't make sense out of what else could fit in there while still sounding like wool, woll, or wull, but I can't believe that o would have been selected to represent a vowel sound which shifted into modern soft i (as in modern "will") with the Great Vowel Shift. Nor do I understand what Chaucer meant by a "discrete person."

Though speaking of the Great Vowel Shift, it's fun to revisit the topic and see this new chart they have up for it. You can really see the French influences in how some of these words were spelled given their original pronunciations (like time); as well as the Old English sound contained in many of the other spellings.

I think "discrete person" = "anyone". The section I took that from was contextually a discussion about the intended audience of Chaucer's manual, dedicated to a fictional son of his but more generally intended for anyone to build themselves an astrolabe.

Well, that can't quite be it. You've still got that "every" in front to account for. And not only do we not say "every anyone" but every and any are partially antonymous.

Sympathies to the man as well as to his friends and family suffering through this time with home. I hope he manages a miraculous recovery. And maybe his experience can help the locals to do something about the river.

Though I sure am curious: what was he even doing there fishing in the first place? If the river's a known toxic dump site, then you'd have to be mighty desperate to want to eat any fish from it. And if the river's not, and it's a regular fishing site, then something very bad -- and probably very illegal -- happened there.

Dang, looks like I got off easy. When I was on vacation in Mexico a long time ago, I was snorkeling in the ocean, and I accidentally dropped the tube underwater and inhaled a whole mouthful of ocean water. I won't get into graphic details, but let's just say that when I finally had a solid dump after a week it was one of the happiest days of my life!

A better title for that review, "Why Dragonball Z: Battle of the Gods made me feel emasculated".

The guy loses me with his proselytizing on the use of Kemet over Egypt. Like, seriously: he lost my attention as I went on a five-minute Wikipedia tour of the articles for Kemet, the hieroglyph km, and Egypt. And the articles end up confirming what I suspected: that we have no fucking clue what vowel sounds should properly go there, so his insistence that we use Kemet on the grounds that it is the true name for ancient Egypt is silly: Kemet, while perhaps closer to the original reading than Egypt or Miṣr/Maṣr, is still incorrect. It would have been a lot less obnoxious had he simply chosen to use the words "Kemet" and "Kemetic" and left it to his curious readers to google these words and discover for themselves that they reference the original name of Egypt. Although it would have been better still had he said "Ancient Egypt" like everyone else does. Does this guy live his life referring to Ancient China as Xia, etc?

But reading on ...

convince the girl to aim the gun at him so he can deflect the bullets. She shoots him, he deflects them and one of them hits his (pregnant) wife Videl in the leg. Then Dende comes over to heal her and finds out she is pregnant. Did I mention she was pregnant?

I was a little shocked at this because it seemed to be so out of character for Gohan to be so irresponsible. He’s one of the more level-headed characters in the series. He’s usually very polite and unlike Goku, he’s more than capable of weighing the consequences of his actions. For him to get drunk and try to show off like that made it seem like the people writing the movie didn’t study up on the characters at all. It’s all very strange because Akira Toriyama was said to have worked heavily with them on the script.
It is strange. But it's also something we're intimately familiar with here in the West with The Legend of Korra. That's another example where a (co-)creator of the original series is working closely with the writers for a future series and yet the writers of the future series still somehow completely fuck up their interpretation of a character. Is the fuck up because the creator himself didn't perceive the character the same way that many in the fandom did? Is it instead because he didn't really work as closely with the writing team as was implied by PR and the credits? Who knows.

What's even stranger to me about this is, as I understand it Toriyama hates GT, a made-for-TV sequel to DBZ, to the point of wishing that it didn't even exist. So like ... if he hates GT so much, then what is he doing aiding Toei in the creation of more crappy non-canon stories?

Anyway, skimming over the rest of the review, it seems like this fan may not have representative tastes for the fandom and so it's hard to tell which of his complaints are legit and which aren't. Like, his complaint about the "shotacon" scene seems like it could be overblown. And his complaint about the transsexual character is hard to tell whether it's transphobic or not, whether the character is icky to him because transsexuality period is icky to him or whether he dislikes the character's transsexuality for Dragon Ball universe-based reasons. Meh, whatever.

Using Chinese animals (or mythological animals) + description sounds like a great way to sound dramatic in any situation. One of these days I'm going to just do that.

This is why I have stock Polish phrases memorized, incidentally.

Many telemarketers know languages like Tagalog, Spanish, or Japanese, but if you aren't in Chicago or Buffalo nobody speaks Polish (it's a pain in the ass to find people who will teach it though >_> I'm resorting to online resources at this point).

Sadly (as I knew it would...) "Twoja mama jest autobus" does not sound distinct enough from the English as much as "ni mama shi gong gong qi che" with appropriate inflections does.

However, "dziewięćsetdziewięćdziesięciodziewięciotysięcznik " will make people hang up instantly.

I imagine it's something akin to a bee buzzng judging by the number of -zee sound effects there, with the odd phonetic vowel thrown in and a good old -znik right at the end.

So something like a Russian Vespiquen's cry.

The problem is that English doesn't differentiate phonetically between ć, ci, and cz, nor does it have a phonetic symbol for "dz". So this is the best I can do! If you want to know more unfortunately you're going to have already started on your Polish lessons.

EDIT: lol just realized that the Polish e-hook-thing sounds a bit like "launch". It's not perfect but telemarketers won't care. You have to say "launch" and then drop the N.

The 1/8 Polish in me should probably feel bad for not speaking Polish but the 7/8 British Imperial Master Race makes me not feel so bad.

Relatedly, Weird Al is still a thing.
