I watched the 2005 live-action version some time in 2006, then 21 years old. At this point in my life, I understood various aspects of Japanese culture, a little better, including ... Spoiler: show I also had learned, in the years since I saw the animated original, what the author of Grave of the Fireflies had intended with his novel upon which the film was based: Spoiler: show And so, with these small differences in life experiences, what happened when I watched the live-action version in 2006? I cried my eyes out. ^^; I showed the film to my family one to two years later when they expressed mild interest in the film. They politely watched it, and my mother did end up tearing up herself near the end. But me? I had never cried so hard during a movie before nor would I cry anywhere near as hard again until we watched Hachi two Christmases ago. What I'm saying is, don't watch it just yet since the film is still fresh in your memory and it's not exactly the most relaxing and happy of viewings ... but you should totally, totally make a mental note to check out the 2005 live-action version some day if you can. By all means major kudos to Studio Ghibli for doing a great job animating a wartime film, but as good as Ghibli's efforts may be, at the end of the day there is something visceral about seeing the events of this film happen to real human beings that sets it on an elevated level apart from the animated offering where, while still a work of art, you know you're watching a cartoon. Side note: just writing up that second spoiler box has made me tear up. Silly me. ^^;

It was good, but if you saw the pre-production concepts of it as a 2D movie, the 3D film looks noticeable lackluster.

Was planning on re-watching the Evangelion series so for a change of pace I watched the rebuild of 1.11 and I was speechless. It was almost perfect. Great pacing, amazing visuals, pretty faithful to the originals (though I hear the later ones drift away from the source material).
Overall a fantastic film and I'm almost tempted to watch the rest of them but I know I'll go crazy waiting the year for 4.0 so I'll hold off for what looks like the ultimate marathon. |

I feel tempted to watch Evangelion, but I have so much other series to catch up on first! ;-;
In other news, I watched Frozen with my family and The Hobbit Part 2 with my buddies. I love how Disney mocks the generic "talking animals" and subverts their usual plots through Frozen. (I'm trying my best not to spoil, slap me if I accidentally did) The Hobbit? I thought it was pretty cool, and as you'd expect... Cliffhanger. >_< If you've read the books, you'll probably know what happens next. Oh, and who's watched Fried Green Tomatoes? |

If you're worried about spoilers, just keep your reviews in a spoiler tag. They look like this on UPN: [ spoiler ] [/spoiler]
But with the first two brackets next to the word spoiler. Better safe than sorry! |

Oh god! When I was about 12 years old, my friend and I were looking for a movie to rent and we picked Fried Green Tomatoes. I have NO IDEA why two 12 year old boys decided to rent a movie that is about and for old women, but it bored us out of our minds. There was only one line we were amused by, it was one of the women crying about her vagina?
I'm not going to say with confidence that it was bad, because I was young and immature and it clearly wasn't what I was looking for at the moment!

Gravity:
Anybody who thought this was an amazing movie should watch something that's way better, like Planetes, or even Apollo 13.

Dave agreeing with Daisy and Stu? Shocker etc.
Saw The Lego Movie last week because the gf and I went to the cinema for Valentine's and it was the next movie we wanted to see that was starting. IT's pretty damn good, definitely better than I was expecting. |

And bringing up the rear, I thought it was mediocre. Last 15minutes severely wrecked its momentum.

I dunno why people haven't been expecting the Lego Movie to be good. It's like they haven't seen any of the Lego media for the last ten years.

It was fine for a kids movie, one liners and cool shit going on and all, but the underlying threads of it were bad.
Also the trailer for Postman Pat the Movie makes me sad. |

It looks like it could maybe be a thinly veiled attempt to criticise post privatisation but I think it's mainly just going to be a way to make them shit tons of money.

I just watched the trailer. It looks so awful.
But it has Stephen Mangan, David Tennant and Jim Broadbent in. But so awful. But my childhood. Ahhhhhhhhhhh. |

> Postman Pat Movie
It looks like a parody trailer someone uploaded to the internet, not to mention the animation for it looks particularly low budget. But mainly it falls under, 'Why Does This Even Exist?' for me. |

Well anything wanting to be called "Postman Pat" shouldn't be too promising anyways. But I have a weird habit of going to see movies I think are going to suck, so I'll be right there in the theaters when this comes out.

Ah. We appear to have different understandings of the sentence "anything wanting to be called "Postman Pat" shouldn't be too promising anyways", then.
