Shingeki no Kyojin is quietly followed still on UPN, I've PM'd some people about manga events and they've enthusiastically mentioned they still read it. It's definitely worth following the anime, just keep an open mind and don't fall into the trap of creating your own fanfiction-expectations then being surprised the real thing doesn't meet them. One of the major negatives of discussing to death a major manga week after week.

Bebop's sub gets a bad rap because the dub lends itself better (with the top-tier of the anime voice actor circle back then giving career-best performances) but it's not terrible. You have a number of big name CVs in the sub giving good performances.

I don't watch most sports anime aside from mahjong/gambling and baseball. If you like this kind of stuff, I recommend trying One Outs (a hilarious blend of baseball and 'gambling') and CROSS GAME which is a adolescent sports drama.

The case is often made for Bebop dubbed. But when I revisit scenes on YouTube and compare, like I did right now for example, what it seems to come down to is:
  • the Japanese voice acting is far superior
  • but Spike's and Vicious's English voices better fit their characters; Jet's two voices are both good but produce somewhat different impressions of who Jet is as a character; and Faye and Edward are toss-ups
Listening to the Bebop dub today, it's hard to imagine I once considered this to be excellent. 'Cause it's not. But ... at the same time, it's a lot better than most dubs I have heard. And honestly, even if I think the acting's not as good, Japanese Vicious sounds overdramatic and Japanese Spike sounds way too low-voiced. Steve Blum's Spike is pretty perfect sound-wise, and Steve's acting is also among the dub's best (even if I wouldn't say he's as great in this department as the Japanese VAs).

I dunno. There are also subtleties lost in translation, and these subtleties are as lost in the subtitle as they are in the dub. I think this is what annoys me the most. The scene in question I used to compare the two is a rather emotional one. There's a part with a cheer (i.e. a cheerleader cheer), and the words are 100% natural in Japanese but don't translate well into English either textually or verbally. I think I honestly prefer the dub's here overall, simply because it sounds more natural in English than does the subtitle. But they are pretty similar overall. And I still prefer the Japanese raw audio above all else. So I'm not sure what to say.

Spoiler: show
Providing the transcript of the cheer below. I don't recommend clicking if you're phoopes or another Bebop newcomer. This is provided moreso to sate the curiosity of those who have seen the series and/or take an interest in Japanese-English translation.

Spoiler: show
Japanese audio transcript:

English subtitles to English audio: And now for a big cheer ... from the bottom of my heart. Go! Go! Me, me, me! Do your best, do your best! Me, me, me! Don't lose, don't lose! Me, me, me! (the subtitles for the cheer stop here, marked above with a blue asterisk)

English audio transcript: And now a big cheer from my heart. Let's ... go ... me! All! Right! Do your best, do your best, don't! lose! me! Let's go, don't lose, don't! lose! me! Doooo your best! Do your best! Me, me, me! Don't you lose, don't you lose! Me, me, me! Gooooo me! Yay~! hahaha

I will say this: the most iconic scene in the series is an order of magnitude better in the English dub than it is in the original Japanese. I went and looked for it, just out of curiosity, and ... man. The Japanese version, while being the exact same scene, just doesn't have the same OOMPH that the English one has. I think it has to do with two things. (Spoilers! Don't click if you haven't finished the series!)

Spoiler: show
SERIOUSLY! This is an end-of-series spoiler for one of the most famous scenes in all of anime. Fuck off until you've finished the series.

Spoiler: show
1. "Bang" is an English loan word in Japanese. So naturally, it's gonna sound better when an English speaker says it in English than it's going to sound when a Japanese speaker fumbles it in Engrish.
It doesn't help matters that the 'a' sound in "bang" is unnatural to Japanese. It isn't an えい like in "hey". It isn't an あい like in "sky". It isn't the 'a' from "apple" in front of the えい from "hey" or any other ć + diphthong approximation. It's ... even IPA represents it as ćŋ and I'm just not satisfied with that, because the 'a' in "bang" is not the 'a' from "cab" or "apple", ć, put in front of the velar nasal ŋ. It's ... something additional. There's more information in that sound than just ćŋ.
2. Steve Blum's interpretation / performance of Spike Spiegel is PERFECT for that final line. Just absolutely perfect. In a way that I don't think the Japanese guy's interpretation / performance ever could be. The sound of USA Spike's voice, speaking that word in that tone with that timbre ... it's just perfect.

So I don't know! I really don't know what to tell you. "Watch the show in Japanese for the 99% ... or watch it in English for that epic 1%." What a conundrum.

Do whatever you feel like.

During the era Bebop came out in, dubs were a lot higher quality than they are today. There just isn't a lot of skill in the ADR directing department as there was in years past. Veteran VAs from that era don't give performances like in decades past even though there's no good reason for it. Like if you look at this dub from Generations, it's pretty terrible even though Archie's VA definitely is demonstrating noticeable effort/heart. Shelly is voiced by Wendee Lee and she sounds awkward here, in part due to the poor script localization ("endless despair") but also matching dialogue to scene. The Japanese version completely destroys it (with Archie voiced by Rikikya Koyama).

IMV, the very structure of Japanese lends it well to narration. The phonetics then evolved to emphasize this. By ending sentences on a verb, it parallels a conclusion in English. It's like taking "God created the Heavens and Earth. And it was good" and compressing them into a single sentence. The nuts and bolts are confusing but the ear doesn't have a problem understanding it. And this is going to give Japanese VAs an edge with media that has a narrative-style presentation like

So, a classic dub is definitely worth the price of admission. Outside of the Disney films which actually use top-tier acting talent and reel in super professionals, there aren't many left up to snuff.

Nobuhiro Watsuki, convicted for possessing 200 lbs of child pornography, was fined $2,000 and is now back to drawing manga.

Hideki Taniuchi, convicted for 5 grams of marijuana, lost all his commissions and was blacklisted from every working in Japan again.

Never forget.

I can't get excited about the Tonegawa anime because it wasn't written by Fukumoto, so it's nothing more than glorified fanfiction. I'll wait and see if I'm proven wrong.

What I really want is a Legend of the Strongest Man Kurosawa anime. It would make for a perfect little 26 episode anime. The ending is so good it ranks up there with Gunbuster's.

Finished up Kuroko no Basket. Great series. Definitely cheesy at times but in a good way that I liked because I like sports and all that. Something funny though... so there's three seasons of the show and then a sort of one-off movie that came out after. that wraps everything up pretty nicely. As far as I could find, there's no official translation of the the movie, so I had to watch a fansub.

This video came to mind.

By divorcing myself from the One Piece community I had hoped to insulate myself from the traumatic stupidity that is the "nakama" experience. Whyyy does it not die?

A friend suggested My Hero Academia to me a while ago. Originally I was pretty hesitant because it looked like a very typical shonen, but after enough badgering I ended up watching it and I kind of love it.

It really feels like the best of early Naruto combined with a bit of X-Men. It is very shonen and almost formulaic, but it's still executed very well.

It is quite literally a TVTropes-faithful shounen in a superhero costume. In its favour are pretty good production values, unique character designs and cute girls with quirky personalities.

That said, Deku has a pathetically bad personality and makes for a subpar lead. He drags the show like an anchor does against rocks.

Couple episodes into Cowboy Bebop. Ended up going with the dub and I'm really liking it! The voice acting is pretty good, a couple spots that make me go "huh?" but those are few and far between. As far as the actual plot of the show... sometimes the episodes feel a little sparse. I'm finding that there's a story that connects between the episodes now that I'm into the show a little more but the first few all sort of seemed like one-offs to me, and I guess I'm used to episodes that connect heavily to each other in my limited anime experience. But I think it's picking up a bit more in that regard.

The soundtrack though... holy shiiiiiit what an eargasm

Television was different in the 90s. Most shows had one-of stories loosely collected. There are very often a theme that still carries over as the characters grow. There's a ton of analysis videos on Youtube.

Tonegawa anime news.

1. We have two short PVs now, each of which reveal ... that Madhouse returns to animate this production. :o And it looks I-D-E-N-T-I-C-A-L to the Kaiji anime in terms of style (or rather, adapating Fukumoto Nobuyuki-sensei's art style to television) and in terms of budget.

2. The series begins airing at the wee hours of July 4 in Japan. So we might have a 4th of July miracle with fansubs, or we might even be so lucky as to get a July 3 CrunchyRoll-or-similar upload. We'll see.

Maybe it will coincide with an even greater July 4th miracle: The Triad will finally release the fansub for Kaiji season 2 episode 5!

Then you need to watch Hataraku Saibou, a.k.a. Cells At Work. One episode in and I am in Heaven. This show is an adorable delight.

I saw the synopsis but never got around to watching it. I'll get to it this afternoon.

The first episode of grand blue is out, and from what I remember of the manga, it should be entertaining. I know Connor is going to be fucking stoked.

Lil' Bluey

I saw a preview of the first chapter before, but didn't know it was getting an animé adaptation. (Think I saw some buzz about it on tumblr but didn't realize it was real/the same series lol.) I'd like to take a look, but probably won't be able to for a while since I'll be on vacation.

While I'm here, gonna comment on another show I picked up...

Angels of Death:

So I didn't know anything about this going in other than it's based off an RPG horror game (by the same author of Forest of Drizzling Rain, which I haven't played either but am vaguely familiar with through tumblr). It's certainly got an appropriately spoopy atmosphere, and I'm definitedly intrigued so far. It's nice to have a pure horror thriller mystery; last I can recall is Another. My guess is that it's similar to Death Parade in that the participants are in some sort of Purgatory-like state/game to determine one's fate after death.

One thing that puzzles me about the male MC is that he's presented as a straight-up ruthless serial killer (even in a potential "past life"), yet all the fanart I've seen depict him as a lovable idiot? I hope there's some obfuscating of memories going on/things may not be quite as they seem, otherwise it's hard for me to endear to him as an unrepentant murderer. ^^;

I am admittedly a little nervous about the production values given what I saw from the trailers (it's also being produced by J.C. Staff, if that matters to anyone), although the first couple eps seemed decently animated enough (if with some odd stylistic choices). Still I hope this paves the way for more RPG horror games being adapted like MCA should've done for Vocaloid series. *cough*

Speaking of which, shout-out to DECO*27 for arranging the ED theme. One of my fav Vocaloid producers, love their music. <3

Requesting that the previous three posts be copied into a spliced-out thread titled (sans quotes) "Cells at Work!". Leave the original three here, I guess, but for the copies, may as well edit out the bottom halves of the previous two since they've nothing to do with the show in question. I really should have had the foresight to make a new thread in the first place, but alas. This is definitely going to be a show I'll be watching and posting about weekly, so we may as well have a thread for it. Makes it easier for other members, particularly in the future, to find the discussion and join in.

As for this thread ...
  • still need to watch No Game, No Life
  • still need to watch Little Witch Academia's TV series
  • still need to watch the Koe no Katachi movie
  • should consider finishing Kuzu no Honkai?
  • should really resume reading my Haruhi books >.<
  • there's always Natsume Yuujinchou S6 ...
  • Heaven's Feel movie(s) when
  • OPM S2 seems lost in Development Hell
  • still need to check out Mob Psycho 100
  • still need to check out Boku no Hero Academia
  • should resume reading School Rumble
  • any word on more Genshiken anime while I've been out of the loop?
  • really, really should resume re-watching Maria-sama ga Miteru, I got forcibly cut off at one of the best parts (there are so many best parts X3), I need to resume that one for sure ...
  • Kamen needs to go back to Japan so we can coordinate the transfer of 39 MariMite light novels in a $100 freight shipment
It'll be interesting to see if Osmosis Jones: the Anime is what gets me to check off some of these badly-delayed projects, or if it only contributes to the problem by selfishly cutting in line without helping to pull any of them out ahead of Pokémon or Japanese ...

Quick little update: I am through Episode 04 of Hataraku Saibou and I have loved every single episode to pieces. Objectively the show might be like a 7 or at best an 8, but for me personally it is loved like a 10 out of 10. I adore this show. Every. single. episode has been fantastic so far. So much love.

Five episodes in, Hataraku Saibou a.k.a. Cells At Work remains the best anime I've seen in a long time. Also one of the only anime I've seen in a long time , but shoosh.

This anime is such a delight. Absolutely adore it. A 10/10 in my heart.

I will be picking up Cells at Work. I've already picked up the Tonegawa show; it's ok but doesn't urge me to watch every week.

Overlord S3 is as good as I could have hoped, but it's also adapting (IMV) the best volumes and not at a rushed pace. Highly recommended.

Want to catch up on Golden Kamuy as well.

If self-loathing, romcom might not be the best route because it'll often end in indecision, and most of the "romance" is pretty shallow. Are you OK with a show that's more comedy than romance?

Spoiler: show
