English Lunar > Japanese Lunar?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDOE8GUlIAA = Japanese version
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEIURTJKek0 = English version

Maybe it's just my bias, as I've known the English version of the song for years and today was the first time I'd ever heard the Japanese original, but ... in stark contrast with most dubbing jobs, I like the English version more. I mean, the Japanese one sounds way too soft, which sucks for two reasons:
1 - it's hard to make out what she's even saying, and
2 - she's not as passionate-sounding as the English singer

The English vocalist, like the Japanese vocalist, sounds like an amateur. Anybody hearing either of these recordings would (hopefully) realize that both women are not very well-suited to going out into the world and winning record labels left and right. But even though she may be an amateur, the English vocalist still has some oomph to her voice, some real passion embedded into the lyrics, while the Japanese singer sounds really unconvincing.

What do you think?

Definetely hard to say without bias but that jp version is certainly much to soft.

Why is this ever even an issue?

Besides 4Kids hackjobs, I mean.

*shrug* I just don't care for the sort that assume anything from Japan is automatically superior. So you like Anime. Doesn't mean the Simpsons, Animaniacs, South Park, whatever is inferior animation/an inferior show. So you like Pocky. Doesn't mean Twix doesn't make a damn tasty cookie/chocolate combo.

Some Japanese stuff is cool, but pedastalifying all of it degrades what's actually good in it.

And I can't stand phallically-challenged wimps like you who call other people names in an effort to reassert some sort of false self-confidence. Get a clue: I'm not a weeaboo, and if you think I am, then you already are one, too. -_-;

The fact of the matter is, you either refuse to believe or you can't tell with your mentally-challenged brain that Japanese anime voice-acting is on a level with Disney feature-length films while American dub jobs are on level with the Smurfs or Scooby-Doo. And that some people actually prefer the Disney-calibre to the Hanna-Barbera. When Americans hear the dubbing for Haruhi or Planetes, they laugh out loud, furrow their eyebrows, and ask me "What is that? " When Japanese adults who don't care for anime because they see it as an otaku thing (e.g. two of my senseis for whom the following's about to apply), when these sorts of natives hear anime, they don't complain about the voice acting or how silly it sounded. Their complaints, if any, are about the silliness of the story or the fact that it's animated and not live-action. There is a difference, and if you can't tell, sucks to be you.

Go back to 4chan, /a/hole. And take your pocky with you. Around these parts, we prefer Cadbury's.

Read what I'm saying in the post, Weeaboo. Hell, I didn't even call you anything, and you immediately go into insults.

Second of all, I never said Japanese voice acting in anime wasn't good. This is Video game discussion, and we're discussing a video game. Guess what, voice acting in video games is often laughably bad. CDi Zelda anyone?

"I just wonder what Ganon's up to..."

Seriously dude, you take serious offense to everything that isn't in total sync with your own opinion. Calm down, get a sense of humor. If you can't take ribbing from a friend, you are going to go through life a very, very lonely guy.

Re: English Lunar > Japanese Lunar?

The Japanese singer sings with better technique and more subtlety IMO. The English version sounds louder because it was mixed louder, and it also sounds like more compression was applied as well. I can hear the subtle pumping and breathing artifacts.

They are both very pleasant to listen to, though.
