Late Gen 6, if I recall correctly. But yeah, I feel like that contributes to the apparent attitude in that thread that suspect is basically equitable to a ban.

I've chickened out from playing OU but finally decided to bite the bullet.
Won my first match woo-hoo! I still don't know what I'm doing in this tier, though!

Honestly straight OU isn't fun to play without memeing these days so don't worry about it.

I actually have to rethink the team a bit here. Unlike in Ubers, where the teams are super predictable and easier to exploit with a mono-water lineup, I actually have to worry about Grass types and Ferrothorn isn't quite so easy to take care of with brute power from the likes or Arceus or Kyogre.
That said, I've seen first hand how silly Lando is. Not as a Steal Rock setter, but as a Defogger. He is neutral to Stealth Rock and immune to all other hazards (cept Leech Seed), quite unique for a Flying-type. Switching him in and U-Turning him out is ridiculously easy. Pelipper functions way better in OU where stuff can't OHKO it. While Rotom-W is actually pretty bad. My tried-and-true Ubers set is rather useless here, as there isn't a lot that Rotom can stall successfully with Toxic or kill with Foul Play. I'll need a new Pokemon here, I have enough pivots. Ash-Greninja and Mega Swampert function similarly well as in Ubers. The Spikes set on Ash-Greninja is stupid, so subbed it for Work-Up instead. As long as the opponent isn't scarfed (and even if they are), Work-Up is powerful enough to kill something. I am not sure, however, that Greninja has the movepool to play mixed. I don't have enough ways to deal with stall however.

I had no idea what to do with Raichu.
I know Raichu normally runs stuff like Thunderbolt, Grass Knot. But I didn't expect or recognize it was running Hidden Power Ice and predicting I'd go to Garchomp was weird. Haunter is something of a gimmick, but with Eviolite it's bulkier than Gengar and serves a similar role. I have Hex to make up the difference in power with Gengar (something Giratina-O loved to annoy me with in Ubers) and Sludge Wave to deal with the Fairies. I badly need a wallbreaker.

This is what I always perceived OU to be, a silly switching dance where you just whittle the opponent down.
But this goes to show just how powerful Work Up Greninja is, especially in the rain.

So is all Showdown meme teams now?
Solar Beam Ancient Power Flame Charge Man I miss Rotom-W. He's just not that good in OU.

If you want a tip for Ferrothorn: Pocket Fire coverage. I used to use an Azelf with Flamethrower a ways back. Fun thing about Azelf is that many expect it to be an Explosion Variant and thus switch in Ferrothorn to eat the damage. They almost never see the Flamethrower coming, and it roasts them with deadly efficiency.
Being able to have an easy answer to OU's biggest defensive Hazard setters is huge, and it's as easy as "slap a half decent fire move on a Pokemon Ferrothorn loves to come in on that doesn't normally carry a fire Attack." 9 times out of 10 you get at least a 2HKO that not even Leech Seed can salvage, though I do recommend running calcs to ensure you get a kill. Like, if you were going to be enough of a memelord like me to use Octillery to do it, make sure you have Focus Energy up so that you grab the crit (which, from experience, is actually easier than it sounds, people LOVE giving Octillery the free turn by switching Ferro in).

I calc'd Hidden Power Fire and it takes about this much to OHKO Ferrothorn:
170 SpA Life Orb + Nature For a rain team I can't stomach even one Power Whip. Maybe I'll go back to my old experiment, Silvally. ... This was horrible, I'm shocked at how little Struggle does now.

I felt remarkably restrained during this battle. And I didn't even notice, but my opponent had similar taste in user names to me!

I dunno if Primal Groudon is the right choice here but it slots in surprisingly well. You'd think running it would be counter productive for a rain team, but Desolate Land isn't really an issue since Kyogre can reset the rain on summon.
I'm still running a Specs Kyogre, which is more reliable I think than the Scarf variant. 252 SpA Choice Specs Kyogre Origin Pulse vs. 240 HP / 0 SpD Arceus in Rain: 385-454 (87.3 - 102.9%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO after Leftovers recovery 252+ SpA Kyogre Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 240 HP / 0 SpD Arceus in Rain: 382-451 (86.6 - 102.2%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO after Leftovers recovery What I badly need is a pivot. Rotom-W is really good, but sort of worthless as a pivot since the stuff I'd use it to pivot into, it has good matchups. Namely, the plethora of Psychic, Flying-types, physical attackers and Earthquake users are great targets for Rotom. Ash-Greninja and Mega Swampert need more utility. I mean, Mega Swampert is always good and useful. I subbed out Ice Punch for Stone Edge, which unfortunately gives me a worse matchup against Zygarde but improves my utility against the rest of the tier. But Ash-Greninja isn't anything until it transforms, and once it transforms it doesn't do enough damage unless I'm in sweep position (i.e., Groudon is dead, there are no bulky scarfers).

TIL: Araquanid walls Primal Groudon.
Seems impossible to imagine, given how physically frail Araquanid is and how it's whole "Water Bubble" thing is useless in the harsh sunlight. But Araquanid resists both ground and fire. Why? Water and Bug cancel each other out for the fire resistance/weakness, and then Water Bubble halves fire damage. This negates both Primal Groudon's STAB and the +50% boost from harsh sunlight. Then, attacking neutrally into Araquanid's high special bulk, fire attacks shockingly don't do much. On the physical side, I don't have a physically invested Primal Groudon but it only did like 33% to Araquanid with Precipice Blades. So in both cases, this bad Pokemon is surprisingly god-like against Primal Groudon. Not quite as good as Rotom-W, but still really strong. Ho-Oh survives a rain-boosted, STAB Hydro Pump from LO Greninja.
It hadn't transformed, but still. I've never seen this before. It looks impossible to me. How? Assault Vest Ho-Oh, maybe?

Is what I fiddled with, so it's possible. Perhaps they had taken precautions to Greninjas. Before transformation, we have: 252 SpA Life Orb Greninja Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Ho-Oh in Heavy Rain: 218-257 (52.4 - 61.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO So it flipflops. Probably because of the LO. |

Maybe it's a Xerneas check. If Xerneas isn't using Thunder, I think it tanks Moonblast and Focus Blast better than Primal Groudon does.
Even then...Thunder is a 34% chance of a 3HKO, with a 70% accuracy. That must be it because I'm sure Primal Kyogre would OHKO it regardless of what it's running.

I got to face a real Ubers team this time and finally got to test Primal Groudon v. Xerneas. It..didn't go well!
Groudon doesn't have the ability to boost SpD or recover outside of Rest, so I figured Psych-Up would be a good way to both boost Speed and defense, but it didn't really help me stop Xerneas. Granted, Focus Miss is a 70% accuracy move, so either of the two could have missed there, but I'd like a guaranteed way to kill off Xerneas after it's set up. I'm already specially defensive, max bulk. Is there a better moveset?

I've banned myself from Showdown until this time next year...if I'm still here, we'll see how Gen VIII rolls around.
I don't like OU, and it was too disheartening to realize that the higher levels of Ubers are all bulky offense. Greninja and Swampert need bigger moves to thrive there, so it's just pray for rain at this point.

I was researching why Breloom is no longer used anymore (aside from Kartana basically eclipsing it in every way) and found an interesting comment: "Spore loses to every Tapu".
And it's true. -Against Tapu Koko, Electric Terrain prevents Pokemon from falling asleep -Against Tapu Fini, Misty Terrain prevents all status moves from taking effect -Tapu Bulu is immune to Spore as a Grass-type -Tapu Lele is the biggest nightmare of all, with a x4 resistance to Mach Punch and two SE moves in Moonblast and Psychic You'd think that Breloom's ability to OHKO Ash-Greninja with Mach Punch and be a general annoyance to the likes of Toxapex would have it see usage, but it loses to basically everything else in the game and even Ash-Greninja can Water Shuriken it to death if it's taken prior damage.

New remarkable bit of trivia: Neuroforce does 25% more damage with super effective moves, not the previously reported 20% of an Expert Belt. Apparently this was discovered last April but I never saw it brought up anywhere.
