I can only voice my disappoint at Squeenix Downs Syndrome for pandering to the gaggle of buffoons who wanted a remake of a game that wasn't great to begin with. You can't make a fossil look any cooler when it's still a fossil.

To be fair, it is excessively hyped. I enjoyed FF7. In fact, soon after I completed it for the first time in 2004, I rated it one of the Top 5 Video Games I had ever played in my life up until that point, placing it right on up there with Mario 3, Super Mario World, and Shenmue II. While those three I just listed still remain pretty snugly ensconced in my Top 5, FF7 has fallen off the list -- possibly off the Top 10 list as well -- in favor of other games that I've since played. That's just me. That's just my story, my relationship with the game. I do like it -- or at least, I like what I can now only vaguely recall of a single playthrough played over ten years ago ^^; -- but I think the fans can be a little obsessive and circlejerk-ey when they say that it is the best Final Fantasy game of all time. Let's be honest: it suffers from some classic problems with the pre-XII series of FFs, and it also suffers from a problem which has plagued many an FF past and present which is its convoluted, mind-fuckey plot. I guess some would point to that as a plus, but for me personally, I wish the story had been a little less convoluted, a little more straightforward. There were just too many "PSYCH!"s or "GOTCHA!"s for me to keep straight who or what certain ones of the characters were anymore.
That stated, I'd still place VII in my Top 3 of FFs I've played (the other two being VI and XII) and I'm much excited to see the possibility of VII's story and characters coupled with XIII's graphics and XII's gameplay.

I'm not saying "How dare he blaspheme the great and mighty FF7! It is a masterwork obv!" I'm saying maybe have the social awareness to not insult half the people in the thread. ;p

I agree. And he's just being the usual attention-seeking contrarian he too often is, we both know this. I'm just offering a little devil's advocacy here to say that, Kuno or no Kuno, half the thread or no half the thread, the game is admittedly touted as God's gift to humanity a little too often when in fact it is merely a good if not great game that exists alongside many other good and great games, including others in its own line.
Anyway, saw this on Twitter this morning. Enjoy:

FFVII is probably 3rd in my top FF games. It's great but not the best. The thing here is that a FFVII remake is like the white whale for FF fans. Always out of reach and not a real thing.
Surprised Talon isn't going on about Shenmue 3 tbh. :p Edit: Nvm there's a thread now. Didn't see one earlier when I heard about it. |

I want to believe that this'll lead to remakes of FF's I particularly like but I somehow doubt they'll find the same fanbase drive for a PS4 FF9. FF7 was a lot of peoples first introduction to JRPGs and an impressive achievement at the time so it enjoys the most nostalgia. In fairness a good part of my love for 9 is probably that it was my first introduction to JRPGs and to the PS1 era.
Will be interesting to see if modern Squeenix can get away with keeping some of the jokes and language that were acceptable in an 11+ nearly 15-20 years ago but might be pushing it a little more now. Also one would assume this will be voice acted? Cue legions of fanboys crying "that's not how Cloud/Tifa/etc should sound!" Never managed to make myself finish the first FF7 (the killer for me being finishing disc 1 and realising I did not care what happened to these people) so will most likely give it a miss but might borrow it off a friend just to give it a go.

I forgot about 12 (rookie mistake) so if I had to list my top FF games it would be 6, 9, 12, then 7.
As good as 7 is (and it is really good), 6 is just absolutely phenominal. But that already got a ps1 remake or something. |

B) It actually makes a lot of sense that pretty much the most popular FF is getting remade, especially considering that out of all the FF games, its visuals have probably aged the worse.

Looks like World of Final Fantasy is the SQ equivalent of Dragon Quest Monsters

Now I know that everyone is super excited for the FF7 remake and the incredibly adorable World of FF but I just want to chime in and say that I've been extremely excited for the new Heavensward expansion for FFXIV and after my first day of playing through early access, I can say that I'm having a blast. The new areas and music are absolutely amazing, and the new Dark Knight job has made me fall in love.

So, on the subject of remakes, I have a question!
Which Final Fantasy IV remake was better? GBA or DS? I honestly can't pick between the two; I love them both for different reasons. On the one hand, the GBA version retains the adorable spritework and is a more "true" experience to the original, but its trump card is the fact that post-Giant of Babil, you can switch your party around freely, adding in anyone you like except Tellah and Fusoya. And then of course there are the two postgame dungeons - the Lunar Ruins and the... earth one where you get cool weapons for the characters you've lost. I forget. It's also the easiest version of the game available, by a long way. And on the other hand, the DS version has bitchin' 3D graphics and cut-scenes and voice acting, and further deepens the gameplay with the addition of Augments allowing for deep customisation options. But you can't use the twins, Edward, Cid or Yang after they depart, there's no post-game content apart from the New Game +, and it's ball-bustingly hard to the point of being occasionally unfair. Fuckin Tower of Zot... |

GBA for me. Easy. I hate the DS graphics. I hate the lack of a post game. Also the item drop system is even stupider.

I only played the DS version and I wasn't fond of the graphics or the no post-game. I'd have to say that if I were to ever play the GBA version, I'd probably prefer that a lot more. It has them awesome sprites yo.

Yeah give me GBA anyday.
The DS graphics were horrendous and the gameplay limitations were terrible. But yeah give me GBA IV. |

I prefer the challenge that the DS version provides (as in an actual challenge) but the GBA/PSP versions look so much better, and the 3D graphics of the DS version really show bad Rydia and Rosa's outfits are.

>DS Graphics horrible
... Y'all are bitches. But good to see there's a consensus! Think I'll dive back into FFIV Advance then... And then run through 5. I fucking love Final Fantasy V guys. |

Double post, but I just remembered that the Four Job Fiesta charity event is currently ongoing. And I fucking love FF5 so I might be taking part. It's always a great opportunity to do raise some money for Child's Play. If I could stream it, I would, but my laptop is a terrible piece of shit.
If you need more explanation, here's Slowbeef with a video on it. |
