Bulbasaur Fizzy Fire Fest!

Fizzy Fire Fest

The hot days of Fizzytopian summer begin to fall, and with them the cool colors of green leaves, violet flowers, and blue skies give way to warmer sights of reds, yellows, and oranges, heralding the cold about to set upon the land once more. But as the first leaves fall, it is not yet time to shelter away, rather, the announcement that Professor Palm had news to share with the land once more had adventurers from all over packing their gear in preparation for what they all knew was coming, eagerly eyeing their televisions and listening to the soft crackle of their radios as the Fizzytopian News Network began the awaited broadcast. "Good afternoon Fizzytopia! And a happy Fizzyversary to all! I'm Dawn Hattenborough and this is the Fizzytopian News Network, coming to you live from just outside New Fizz City with your evening news." The woman walked as she talked, her sporty suit and soft blue bob of hair standing against the foliage of the road leading away from the city itself.

The camera pans on its own, this time needing no introduction from the local news anchor, to show the ever-erratic Professor Palm, exactly as the populace expected, stopping at the side of the trail to pick up a leaf of beautiful gold and twirl its stem about between his fingers a moment before realizing he was being actively filmed. "O-oh! Hello everyone! So sorry, I expected to hear my name as usual. I suppose I'll never get used to this public speaking thing..." He trails off a moment, dusting off his lab coat as he picks himself from the ground. "As you all are aware, I am Professor Palm, and as ever, I require your assistance."

Scampering to catch up with the news anchor for but a moment before relaxing his gait again, he takes a sharp inhale to catch his breath and continue. "As you're all fully aware, we have made expeditions across the entire breadth of Fizzytopia, new and old, in search of Fizzytopian Regional Variants of all shapes and sizes in recent years." "-quite successfully, at that!" Dawn interjects, ever praising her viewership. "Indeed! But alas, much of what we have found thus far have been folklore confirmed, or otherwise unexpected variants that, while fascinating, are likely not the easiest to raise as friends and companions to newer trainers, with some few exceptions."

"Are you perhaps suggesting..." The woman's eyes light up in expectation, clearly knowing what the Professor means to announce but unable to hold her excitement back any longer. The man fishes out but a single paper and shows it to the camera with haste, a picture of Bulbasaur with an orange bulb accompanied by a carved face, surrounded by two pictures of rather pronounced question marks and quite the wall of text below. "Official Fizzytopian Starters!" the duo shout in unison, practically shoving the paper into the camera for all to read its title - Petition for Distribution of Regional Starters, with a large red stamp marked "Approved".

Happily stuffing the paper back into his pocket, the Professor exclaims, "With the air cooling, and snow on the horizon, I figure now the best time to go looking for our very own Fire-typed starter Pokemon for new adventurers to potentially carry with them into the world. And of course with plenty of known variants of such creatures having been pre-approved for use elsewhere in the world, surely we can locate one such specimen across Fizzytopia!" The camera then shifts back to Dawn, positively giddy in the moment. "So let's get out there and find the perfect Fire starter to represent our home! This is Dawn Hattenborough with Fizzytopian News Network, signing off!"

  • This event is an ART CONTEST with one winner, who will be granted prizes at the end of the contest.
  • ART CONTEST RULES:
    • The goal of this contest is to imagine what a regional Fizzytopian variant Fire starter will look like, which can take its locale from anywhere within Fizzytopia’s existing or previously existing Zones and Gyms. This does include areas from The Unknown Chronicles.
    • The restrictions on zones and subzones that have previous regional variant winners have been temporarily lifted for this FFF.
    • All entries must be a variant of a pre-existing Fire starter, and must keep the Fire typing, though secondary types may be changed as you please. In order to keep some variety from Fizzytopian Bulbasaur, we are also not allowing any entries from Kanto, or any entries with the Ghost secondary type. (sorry Charmander lovers, you can submit entries during future events!)
    • The winning submissions will be considered Fizzytopian regional variants, so they must adhere to the following guidelines:
      • Each entrant must be based off of an existing Pokemon and follow the standard anatomy and physiology of that species.
      • The size and scale of the variant must be relatively similar to the existing species, but bodily proportions may be different as long as they don’t unreasonably detract from the original design of the species.
      • Creating a split or new evolution of a Pokemon that does not currently exist is not permitted. You may change the method in which the Pokemon evolves, otherwise it will default to its standard mechanic.
      • The entrants must include the region of Fizzytopia from which the entrant hails. The most important thing is the justification of how the entrant fits into the locale so all types are permitted as long as they can be explained.
    • Feel free to come up with your own localized nickname for your regional variant!
    • Please give a small Pokedex-style description of your entries and explain how they fit the theme! Make sure to include a fleshed out movepool including all EMs (if applicable), MTs, and TM/TRs so that we can push the winners to a live state as soon as possible!
    • You may design a signature Custom Move unique to your entrant’s species. Signature move may be reviewed or balanced once the contest is over.
    • Artwork submitted must be your own creations or edits; any medium is allowed as long as it is your own work! Teams may assist you with the creation of details for your entry, including move pools and Dex entries, but the winner will be whoever created the submitted artwork.
    • The mods may request changes to entries prior to voting in order to keep within the spirit of the theme if we feel an entrant may be straying from the theme of the contest. Where possible, these requests will be minor (such as clarification of Dex entries or movepools) and are solely to ensure a smooth transition of the Pokemon into the game should it win.
    • The deadline to submit your artwork is the end of November 20th, 2023, to which community voting will commence. Voting will be held as a run-off vote.
    • The final results as well as prizes will be announced on November 30th, 2023! There will be one winner announced, as well as a runner-up prize for this event.
    • All previous winners of Fizzytopian regional variant contests within one calendar year are unable to participate in order to prevent a single person from designing the majority of Fizzytopian forms over the lifespan of the game.

Spoiler: show

Fuegha
Fire
The Ember Croc Pokemon
Blaze / Storm Drain
Entry 1: Fizzytopian Fuecoco are easily identified from their Paldean cousins by the differences in coloration, a result of diet differences between the two. Fizzytopian Feucoco have a significantly stronger bite.
Entry 2: Feucoco's vent has not properly developed, resulting in it regularly having to sneeze in order to keep its fire flowing. The size of the coral living on its head directly correlates to how mature a Fuecoco is.

Entry 1: Volcalor develops a shell of minerals as a result of the volcanic vent on its head. While many trainers find its appearance to be unnerving, it is an underground fave in many circles.
Entry 2: Volcalor's body is more suited to a constant marine life than Crocalor. It uses the coral on its back in order to more easily blend in.

Detailed Research Report:

Fizzytopian Fuecoco are born on the treacherous Thermal Cliffs in the Conflagrant Spire in the Unreal Archipelago. It is unknown how the popular got here, but the mostly marine environment forced many severe changes onto the species in order to adapt. While Fuegha, as they are often called, are often considered more colorful than their normal counterparts, this is actually not true in comparison to where they live, where red hot lava spouts are common and the coloration helps keep them safe when viewed from below in the water. As a self-defense mechanism, many Fuegha will consume lava that falls into the ocean water in order to begin to develop their own lava sacs that provide them with heat, and more importantly, irritating smoke to drive off would be predators. They lack the ability to vent this smoke naturally at this stage, leading to them expelling it from their nostrils regularly. Since their diet is primarily smaller fish Pokemon like Luvdisc, their snout has increased in length to allow for better hunting conditions, although their teeth are still oversized and not mature enough yet. Once a certain age, Fuegha begin their migration over to the Vibrant Reef in the Tranquil Lagoon, where they begin a symbiotic relationship with many of the coral species present there. The minerals in their smoke allow for the coral to begin to live and thrive, and while Fuegha do not grow enough coral to properly blend in, their small size allows them to continue to hunt.

Volcanor has matured enough that a vent has sprouted on their head, and as a result, a protective mineral layer has formed on their face and mouth as a result. While this serves to make their appearance particularly intimidating, with antiquity calling them "The White Death" it primarily serves as a defensive tool. Their bodies have streamlined for life lived mostly under the water, and still actively hunt prey, using their growing coral colonies to attract unwitting fish. Their coloration has also started to mature, gaining white stripes that when viewed from above look like sunbeams and serve to break up its outline.

Skelerecife is sometimes called "The Living Reef" by locals, and due to its large size and the extensive coral colony on its back, it is more docile and specifically an ambush predator. Many unique crystal formations and species of coral and algae grow on Skelerecife, including on its face plate, which will boast a number of colorful patterns on it, giving each Skelerecife a unique look from one another. Due to their big size, they primarily hunt large prey such as Alomomola and Sharpedo, but smaller Pokemon often use the reefs for protection and shelter, and maybe Pokemon enjoy the heat coming from Skelerecife's vent, which has positioned itself adjacent to its mouth.

Little is known about what purpose the anemone on its nose serves, but each Skelerecife has one. Skelerecife will make the journey back to the Thermal Cliffs in order to nest, where they use their smoke and fumes to ward off predators and invaders on their nests. They are highly territorial during this time and displays between Skelerecife are very common. Since they need to keep their coral wet, they guard their low-lying nests from the water.

Signature Move: Volcanic Ambush
Power: 80 BP
Type: Rock
Damage: Special
Effect: Moves first (+1 priority). Only succeeds if the opponent is preparing a damage attack, similar to Sucker Punch. If the enemy is preparing a Super Effective Attack, this will inflict -2 Accuracy to the opponent.

Cynderill, the Smog Sentry Pokémon

Normal

Shiny

Type: Fire
Ability 1: Blaze
Hidden Ability: Slow Start
Dex entry 1: Descended from Cyndaquil affected by poisonous fumes. This Pokémon has a strong sense of loyalty and will protect all that it holds dear.
Dex entry 2: It is not yet acclimated to its own poisonous gases, sometimes getting dizzy off its own fumes. It is never in real danger from this, however.
Evolves into: Billowva (level 14)

Info: Following the defeat of the gigantic tyrannical Heatran, the Pokémon that called Mt. Aduro home found a sense of freedom they hadn't known in many years. With this, however, came its perils- namely, that one cavern lined with the still-smoking corpses of entirely too many dead Koffing and Weezing. Many a Pokémon had to be kept out of that particular passage, and Mt. Aduro's Cyndaquil population took up the task of keeping unwary Pokémon out. However, being in such close proximity to the poisonous fumes had an effect on the Cyndaquil over the years, until eventually, their descendants turned out... different. Cynderill's body produces poisonous gas which it can blast out of its snout quite forcefully, which has also affected the color of its flame, turning it a vibrant blue. However, Cynderill is not actually a Poison-type yet, and thus is still prone to falling ill from its own fumes. However alarming this might seem, however, Cynderill has a stellar immune system, and each bout of illness only serves to strengthen it. In battle, it is not exactly the best, prone to dizziness from launching its own poison gases. Its best bet is to try and incapacitate an opponent with them for so long as to give Cynderill itself time to recover. Cynderill is a loyal creature- descended from noble Cyndaquil who selflessly kept others safe from potentially deadly fates, it will fiercely guard all who are dear to it. It's not especially great at this just yet, but the spirit is there nonetheless, and no less admirable.

Billowva, the Smog Jet Pokémon

Normal

Shiny

Type: Fire/Poison
Ability 1: Blaze
Hidden Ability: Neutralizing Gas
Dex entry 1: With newfound proficiency of its poison gases came a confidence boost as well. Billowva Trainers must be watchful for reckless overconfidence, however.
Dex entry 2: It lowers its head as though preparing to charge, but instead blasts enemies with powerful jets of poisonous gas from the vent in its head.
Evolves into: Pufflosion (level 36)

Info: With sufficient experience, Cynderill evolves into Billowva. Billowva's flames are bigger and more vibrant than a Quilava's, but this can be dangerous if it is too careless with its poison fumes. Now a fully-fledged Poison-type, Billowva no longer falls ill from its own fumes. However, it can mistake this for mastery over its poison, and can become recklessly overconfident as a result. Trainers desperately need to be on the lookout for this, because a recklessly overconfident Billowva causes explosions. Nevertheless, the loyalty and honor from the Cynderill stage is no less present, and it will still fight fiercely to defend those it cares for.

Pufflosion, the Guardian Pokémon

Normal

Shiny

Type: Fire/Poison
Ability 1: Blaze
Hidden Ability: Neutralizing Gas
Dex entry 1: Condensed clouds of gas hang around its neck. As a last resort in battle, it can ignite the smog boa to create a massive explosion.
Dex entry 2: Anything worth guarding has a Pufflosion guarding it. This knowledge does not benefit thieves, for there is no hope of getting past the Pufflosion.

Info: With sufficient experience, Billowva evolves into Pufflosion. Pufflosion might look more like a vain fashionista type, but this is merely a ruse to lower the guard of anyone foolish enough to try and get past it to anything or anyone it is guarding- to put it simply, it will not work. Do not try it. Around Pufflosion's neck rests what is referred to as the smog boa, a formation of condensed smog clouds. Pufflosion uses this to great effect in battle, including firing more Smog and Poison Gas from the ends, ripping parts of it off to use in various moves (it grows back), and in a pinch, it can ignite it to create an immediate and devastating explosion.

Signature move:

Name: Smog Bomb
Base power: 100
Type: Fire
Classification: Physical
Description: The user launches a fireball infused with toxic gases, which simply sits on the opponent's side of the arena at first. Small at first, but by the end of the following round, the fireball has grown considerably in size, nearing the average size of a Normal Form Electrode. The fireball begins to emit smoke, and after the third round, the fireball explodes, dealing spread damage that hits all opponents and poisons them.

Additional information:
  • Smog Bomb is intended as kind of a counterpart to Pumpkasaur's Pumpkin Bomb. As this is intended to be part of a starter trio, it only makes sense that their signature moves are similarly similar.
  • All three stages are capable of emitting noxious fumes in powerful gusts, hence their learning various wind attacks.
  • Cynderill still being pure Fire mirrors Pumpkasaur still being Grass/Poison. Another way in which I feel this starter trio can share a similarity of some sort.
  • A quick Wikipedia search told me that arsenic makes fire burn blue, which is where this family's blue flames comes from.
  • In addition to all else that was stated, Pufflosion can also extend the smog boa and use it as a whip or lasso, hence it learning Power Whip and Bind.

Wilder and less well-groomed than their Kalosic cousins, these Fennekin will chew on any detritus they can find to fuel the fire in their ears.

Professor Hazel's Fizzy Fire Report

With the recent revelations of so many new Fizzytopian Formes in the region, a call had gone out in search of researchers of all stripes. This new domain and the incentives offered were enough to sway the interest of specialists in other disciplines such as Darik. He looked into some rumours, and soon he was off to the Cloud Garden to research quite the odd specimens: it seems that the Chimchar line had adapted quite well to the environment, possibly even divergent enough to be categorized as a new regional Forme. These are the relevant notes from his expedition, as well as his sketches of the specimens.

Evolves into Fizzytopian Monferno at Level 14

Fizzy: Its fur sparks static from its surroundings when it runs through the Rose Garden. The quicker it moves, the more charge it builds, storing it in the band on its head, and, I speculate, its tail. Said tail seems to form the shape of a budding rose rather than the standard flame, possibly also as a form of mimicry.

Bubbles: They dig through the ground to tend the roses and eat harmful bugs. During breeding season, all flora in the area flourish vibrantly.

Evolves into Fizzytopian Infernape at Level 36

Fizzy: Electricity crackles from its jagged hair tip. While generally kind-tempered and helpful, they tend not to respond well to surprise, which means a single disturbance can easily cascade into a full-on swarm. It has become omnivorous, a diet consisting mostly of fruit, roses, and pest animals. The levels of static charge detected lead me to believe this Pokemon has now adapted intona Fire/Electric type

Bubbles: According to the locals, when they overcharge, they go on a rampage, rushing to the highest peak they can to discharge the built-up electricity into the clouds. The energy pouring from them at these times burns scars into the landscape. They also said its dung is prized fertilizer, growing vibrant flowers that store a small static charge themselves.

Fizzy: I only observed a single one during my excursion, so they seem to be quite rare. I saw it in action in a territorial dispute for a vital watering hole, with a pack of Marill's Azumarill leader. He moved extremely quickly, building up electrical charge, which caused the roses on his wrists and knees to bloom and crackle. An added arc of lighting as he returned from each blow added an extra potency to them. He was able to extend his jagged tail's length significantly as well. All the while, a pleasant smell emanated from him, filling the entire area despite the action.

Bubbles: A few other sightings have happened. One reports that it can inflate the cloud on its head, allowing temporary levitation. Another claims their blessing can restore any plant to perfect heath from any state. One settlement group I encountered had a very high reverence for it, having an observed day and effigies. They credited it for their lush harvests and evoke it during thunderstorms.

Physical Fire
40 BP 100 Accuracy
A punch that hits twice, second hit is Special Electric and Charges the foe.

Fizzytopian Infernape punches the enemy for a 40 BP 100 Accuracy physical Fire move that makes contact, then lightning arcs as they draw back, hitting the foe with a 40 BP special Electric move that does not make contact and has a secondary effect (incompatible with Sheer Force) to Charge he foe. Both hits are considered punches. Pokemon immune to Electric moves will not take the second hit (Volt Absorb, Lightning Rod, Motor Drive, etc users will still gain their relevant effects) and will also not be Charged. Any effect that changes this move's typing (Normalize, Electrify, ec) will only change the Fire damage's type.

Dr. Phoebe Tallsocks, Primary Researcher and Director at the Tallsocks Pokemon Lab, Presenting:

I Submit to Professor Palm this fascinating report of a regional variant of the Scorbunny evolutionary line, which i and a small team of field agents observed over the course of a week on an expedition to the Lost city of Solaris, on the Island of Talas. Within the city i found a large community of Scorbunny, Raboot, and Cinderace, with their main population congregating at and using the large clay brick and stone Arena as a hub for their day to day activities. this population seems to have developed long tough and flammable strands of hair that grows in tufts from their ears, upon which they affix obsidian chunks and strike them together to ignite the cords when threatened or even when moving vigorously. and move vigorously they do! These Pokemon seem to have unending energy and play a fast paced and rough game in the old arena, which seems to have lead them to not only adapt socially, but physically to the requirements of sport. they seem to have metabolized some mineral that leads to black shiny stone growths along their bodies and use these natural pads to smash basalt spheres across the pitch in relative safely, though i did see some unpleasant injuries in my time observing them. This new and exciting discovery will certainly keep my researchers and staff busy for years to come as we delve into their social structure, physiological differences, and yes, of course, suitability for capture and human partnership!

F.Scorbunny, the Surly Pokemon
Ability: Blaze/Truant/Defeatist
Type: Fire
Dr. Tallsocks' notes: These Scorbunny are fascinating. They hang about on the outside of their groups, only seeming to associate with the Raboot and Cinderace when absolutely necessary. They form small squads and laze about, rarely joining even the drilling and practice behaviors of the regional Raboots. Most often they are slow to try and quick to give up at any task. Only a very few ever develop any skill with the round basalt stones that these Pokemon play their games with, the rest simply stay out of the way and shoot surly glances at their group mates, as if they're resentful they cannot match them for skill.
Learnset:

1 Ember
6 Fake Out
8 Accelerock
12 Rock Throw
17 Flame Charge
20 Rock Polish
24 Lava Plume
28 Take Down
32 Stone Edge
36 Eruption

F.Raboot, the Dedicated Pokemon
Ability: Blaze/Solid Rock/Reckless
Type: Fire/Rock
Dr. Tallsocks' notes: The regional Raboot are almost as interesting to observe as the adult Cinderace, and are truly the only reason i was able to make any kind of sense of the rules of the ball game these Pokemon play. they practice ceaselessly, alone, in pairs, or even in small scrimmage groups in the alleys that run through the city surrounding the ball court. they only ever strike the ball with their hips, thighs, upper arms, and heads, and yet somehow they are able to propel it exactly where they aim, sometimes with great force. the volcanic glass that they work into beads and thread on to their long ear tufts clack and spark as they drill and play, making for quite a light show and ruckus through the streets of this ancient metropolis.

24 Rock Polish

37 Wide Guard
42 Stone Edge
48 Eruption

F.Cinderace, the Athlete Pokemon
Ability: Blaze/Solid Rock/Reckless
Type: Fire/Rock
Dr. Tallsocks' notes: The game that these novel regional forms of Cinderace play are brutal, frequently cracking and shattering the stone of both the walls and that they adorn themselves with. while the objective seems to have something to do with the stone hoops at the apex of the arena walls, i have not yet seen the game end at a definitive action or event. these Pokemon seem to play purely to show off. they strut and preen when they've moved the ball through the goal, seem to taunt opponents who have mishandled a situation or been thwarted, and attempt to make ever more intricate gyrations in the air before making contact with the ball. I have also observed that the most impressive and skillful players are often afforded the help from the numerous Scorbunny and Raboot in gathering food, maintaining personal areas, and caring for both the highly regarded Pokemon's shiny volcanic glass scales and their preferred basalt balls.

Fizzytopian Fuecoco

Pokedex Flavor Text
Fizzy: It lazily lays around in warm places, it naps constantly and always wakes up hungry. Once it’s filled it’s belly it just takes a nap only to do it all over again the next morning, they many keep to themselves and don’t bother anyone.

Bubbles: The difference in its appearance seems to be largely related to having been left alone with no known predators hunting it, it was isolated on top of a mountain range with no way out.

Fizzytopian Crocalor

Pokedex Flavor Text
Fizzy: Spiritually it has a keen insight on the ‘souls’ around it. The turf on its head no longer has a small flame after absorbing bits and pieces of the wandering souls that have now moved on to the afterlife, it now has reshaped itself into an ‘egg’.

Bubbles: It’s skull like face is frightening to some, it even shocks itself when drinking from a pool of water upon seeing its own reflection, it’s shy like nature seems to suggest it has trouble making friends. The ‘nest’ on top of its head seems to resemble a ‘Dream Catcher’ that catches the bad spirits at night and frees them upon the first light of the morning sun.

Fizzytopian Skeledirge

Pokedex Flavor Text
Fizzy: After the number of souls the fiery egg on top of its head has successfully freed, the egg itself has gained a ‘soul’. That very soul has grown into a phoenix which has infused itself with the croc that protected it.

Bubbles: The very wings that Skeledirge has gained belong to the ‘Alebrije’ (spirit animal) born from the spirits of the dead its helped move on. Its colorful wings illuminate in a fiery glow.

Name: Wings of the Underworld
Type: Fire
Classification: Status
Effect: By manipulating its fiery wings, the ‘Phoenix’ will shot out and pummel the enemy with a feather attack, a single touch of just one of these feathers will place a ‘Curse’ on the Pokémon in addition to it a ‘Burn’ status for the reminder of the battle.
Lore: Each feather represents a spirit in which the Phoenix helped move on to the afterlife, by freeing them of the ‘evil’ that prevented them from moving on residual energy was left behind. To prevent the ‘negative energy’ from effecting others, the Phoenix transformed them and made them into feather quills in which it now uses to help its host fly and attack. Thus making up the colorful feathers of its wings.

As the Fizzytopian News Network begins its broadcast, screens everywhere are greeted not with an introduction from the station's anchor, but shockingly from the very professor everyone had come to see. No grandstanding nor splendor was to be had today. In comparison to previous announcements, this was to be a serious occasion... or it would be were Professor Palm himself not completely covered in what appears to be a dark soot.

"Hello one and-" A harsh cough escapes his lips before he continues, "Hello. Today we will be revealing Fizzytopia's very own-" More coughing, as those at home are certain they saw actual soot emerge from within the man's own lungs at the violent choking on air. "Just play the video..."

Spoiler: show
The screens cut to moving camera footage, with Professor Palm and Dawn Hattenborough attempting to sneak through the crunchy fallen leaves at their feet, clearly following something. As Dawn steps on a twig, creating a large snapping sound, sudden movement erupts from the nearby brush, and the two begin chase. Through the light brush, over a ridge of destroyed land... and into a beautiful oasis, light shining through the dead trees all around them to reveal their quarry, drinking at the nearby pool as small fires raged in the background...

"There it is..."

"No... there they are..." The man raises his hand to point out an entire pack of the creatures. "Fizzytopian Fennekin."

The camera cuts out, and Professor Palm cleans himself up as he places a fully filled out report alongside that of the other Fizzytopian starter on his board. "Thank you all for your assistance." More, lighter coughing continues, "I'm truly thrilled at the overwhelming number of confirmed sightings for this new starter, and I hope to see you all again soon!"
