4chan's end

Later today, 4chan is going to have a forced migration of all SFW boards to a new domain, 4channel.org. Effectively, it's cutting the site in half, with only the porn/racist content remaining on the original 4chan.org. The promise is that 4channel will be heavily moderated (akin to Reddit), with less tolerance for any controversial content. The intent is to make 4channel a better advertising venue than 4chan.org. SFW and NSFW boards will not be accessible from the banner panel.

Out of the blue, this is the end of 4chan as the singular website it's always been. Boards have been kicked out in the past (like /l/) and failed to thrive on their own domains. Some boards are subsidized by the popularity of other ones.

The unique culture this board has will be washed away in favor of a Reddit-style posting system. And in my experience with Reddit, it's awful unless you have a dense population of highly-educated, intelligent posters. Reddit also doesn't allow free speech and leadership can delete/ban you for an unacceptable opinion. This is what Hiroyuki wants 4chan to move toward, which is in effect a chilling extension of a world without net neutrality, motivated by profit.

I will miss the heckish place. It was a dinosaur in every perspective - ancient, but still large, powerful, majestic and overall intimidating. It was always the first source for news and leaks, and protected by unrestrained anonymity, people could voice what they really thought. That doesn't happen anywhere else in the world right now. The stupid board /pol/ elected the President of the United States. Whether you agree with it or not, it left a mark on human history. And now it is gone.

Too late.

Reddit was already an emigration of 4channers towards a new, Digg-like community where they could:
  1. communicate in ways Digg facilitated, 4chan did not, and which the channers had wanted 4chan to support (e.g. permanent threads)
  2. communicate in eloquent, competent English and without others dragging the conversation level down to that of /b/
It was basically "a thinking man's 4chan," or from another point of view "a 4chan for people with poles stuck up their asses". People who celebrated chan culture, would remain behind on 4chan. Those who were championing these sorts of changes, would emigrate to Reddit. This is exactly what we observed in the early days of Reddit. It's why Deo flocked to the site immediately (because he was one of these very emigrants) and why I refused to use it for so long (because I saw it as nothing more than the Colonial America to 4chan's Europe).

4chan had two choices at the juncture of Reddit's birth: implement Reddit's model or don't. And they chose don't. Which is fine, and makes sense in both foresight and hindsight. But in hindsight, as we can see, 4chan lost the relevancy fight.

Reddit is the 6th most trafficked website on the Internet as of May 2018. 4chan doesn't even make the top 100. In fact, looking up 4chan's active Alexa score ...

Reddit's current Alexa score, as of November 17 2018, is 18 globally; 4chan's is 502. In the United States, Reddit sits at #6 at while 4chan is all the way down at 221.

If 4chan attempts to emulate Reddit now, it is far, far too late. No one is going to migrate from Reddit back to 4chan -- maybe with the exception of /t_d/ users who wish to escape what they perceive as Reddit's maniacal liberal bent. The majority of Reddit users who started on Reddit will stay on Reddit. And the majority of Reddit users who left 4chan for Reddit ... will also stay on Reddit. 4chan had their choice to copycat Reddit back in the late '00s and they passed on it. It's too late now. The people have voted -- and the votes are clearly in Reddit's favor.

Rest in peace, 4chan. You go now the way of your ancestor, the Something Awful forums. One day your child Reddit will join you. But that is not this day.

After the migration, I was permanently banned from all boards because of abuse originating from my IP range. Previously, I could post on boards that were not /a/, but now I'm "hellbanned" from every board unless I purchase a 4chan Pass.

4chan is 100% dead.
