It's the yearly visit!
|
I'm about to go write 6k, which will bring me nicely up to 40k in preparation for tomorrow.
Thank goodness for strikes over pensions. I get the whole day tomorrow to finish. <3 EDIT: A WINNER IS HANDY! Last edited by Handymankg2; 11-30-2011 at 08:49 AM. |

Yeah I got lazy towards the middle of the month and left myself 10k to do today, was never going to happen. Good job Handyman.
Still, this is far more than I managed last year so I'm reasonably happy with myself. To a more successful 2012!

Okay guys, it's October now and that can only mean one thing. Okay, that's not exactly true but in this thread it can and that is that it's less than 31 days until the new NaNoWriMo season starts. I expect cheering and hollering after reading that sentence as well :p
I thought I'd bump this thread up for people who are interesting in taking on the thirty day challenge again after at least two UPNers, myself and Handy completed the challenge last year. I'm sure we could chat, share our plot ideas, strategies for working around everything else we may have to do (I know that I'll actually be working this year, so I'll definitely need to get started on time this time around). Other than that, I've got a couple of ideas to suggest but it's always good to get ready or find some friendly competition, which spurred me on at the start, so yeah. Let's just see how things go after I bump this thread up. Everyone can definitely count me in for this years NaNoWriMo with my story involving a cop, a bounty hunter and lots of violence \o/ Also, it looks like the site's down at the time of me posting. So they must be getting things ready for this years event, which is good. |

I think I can do NaNoWriMo this time. I have definitely gotten better at managing my time.
Trying to decide an idea is difficulty.

I wouldn't mind having a crack at NaNo, my problem is original writing - I'm terrible at it. Every time I come up with an idea that I think is totally new and off my own back, I get about a paragraph in before remembering that it's the plot of some movie or series I watched about five years ago. This is the reason I've only ever written things where the main things are given to me (Kuno contest, ASB reffings).
If I can get someone to throw ideas at me until something sticks, I'd give it a go. Assuming I'll have time. Then again I do have three weeks off work that I might be spending doing other stuff. |

I have 9000 ideas and no time.
... Wait no. I actually have time now. Post secondary is weird. |

I have a few ideas batting around, one of which I will probably try. They're all pretty philosophical/psychological which I will probably fail hard at. I have less time but more motivation this year, so we'll see how it goes.
Of course the other thing this will coincide with is Movember, so let's hope moustaches are conducive to writing. EDIT the first: What're your usernames? I'm Fleetwood.

The same as it is on here =3=
I did a search for Fleetwood (after figuring out that the link on the first post of this thread doesn't work I might ask Yuki if she could change that... Eventually) and added the only Fleetwood it provided as a buddy, so you may have a message or something saying that I've added you... You may not. But if you don't, you can always go to your profile and it'll show me under buddies. It's cool to see that everyone has a bunch of ideas, although Dave thinks his have unoriginal plots. I'm definitely going to be sticking with my main idea though. I've had thoughts bouncing around for it and the world's slowly been built up. So I gave names to my two main characters... Eventually, and I'm building up the world history. I tend to base my stories on a game I've played through, but fling it into a different era (last year was LoZ, but I have nothing to show for it now because my hard-drive crashed in the new year ). That gives me an idea of how I want things to go and a bit of a back story to it, which works for me. Although Daisy was wondering which game I was using this year as I bounced some ideas for names off her. I wouldn't say though. |

Added you back - worth re-emphasising that this is a brand new username for me so if you had me added in previous years you don't any more.
The idea I think I've settled on is my post-epic fantasy. Loosely based on Norse mythology (because they had boss mythology), it's set several years after the resolution of the typical epic fantasy plot and how the world deals with the aftermath. Specifically going to be focussing on the "chosen one" and how he deals with a) having experienced all the crap chosen ones get put through, b) seeing and living through the consequences of his actions and c) the inevitable directionlessness that comes with having had a "destiny"... and having fulfilled it. I promise to try not to make him annoyingly angsty. In fairness he was already a reasonably experienced regular soldier rather than generic destined farmboy so he won't be quite as broken as chosen ones really should be after your typical fantasy plot (side note - anyone ever read Robert Jordans Wheel of Time series? Now there's a series that properly deals with how someone would actually change and buckle under that kind of pressure).

If I come up with a decent idea, I'll definitely want to give NaNoWriMo a try. Of course, I say this every November, and I never seem to get anything accomplished... Maybe this year will be different.
:EDIT: My username is Coselle.

I think I've added you Marion Ette... I tried a search for Coselle, that came up with nothing. So I went onto Concepts page and swapped his name for the one you gave, which worked and gave me a persons profile page. So I've added them as a buddy.
And there's just 15 days to go... I'd better think up a synopsis for my story... And a plot, a plot would be a very good thing. |

We are allowed to create our novel first, but just can't write it, right?

So, for those of you who have done this before, is there any off limits topics? By that I mean, do they care about the amount of cursing or sexual content or anything similar?

Yaaaaay, buddies! \o/
>Blaze Yeah, you're allowed to get set up with things like character basics, a plot outline, things like that. You're just not allowed to start writing anything story based (other than a synopsis and a title) before November. I had to look at the help just to refresh my memory, but to quote an official source, Quote:
Genre and the language in a story generally doesn't matter. Unless you go around posting it on their forums or anywhere else, it's not likely to be seen by anyone. Your story only needs to go onto the site once, unless you fall short of the 50k target, and that's to verify it (a tip from me is to get a decent chunk above 50k, say 100 or so because it won't always agree with some words or names or whatever) and the verification is done by a computer. So feel free to swear as much as you like or have explicitly graphic scenes... If that's what you like. (This was also covered in the 'rules and regulations' section of the help) I might actually get my synopsis started tomorrow, but I don't have a title yet |

Even though I have a decent rough outline, I'm struggling to write a blurb that doesn't sound godawful. Which is making me fear for the potential genericness of my plot.
