Dehumanization

Is extreme torture or dehumanization in some form (i.e., rape) worse than death, or clearly superior to it?

Is it better to survive being torture or an accident, but be horribly disfigured or disabled in some way and be ostracized by society, or to die?

Both are really, really horrible things and I think trying to make a distinction between the two is stupid.

I'd prefer death though honestly although Kin and I came up with a third worst fate I have to remember.

EDIT:

On today's episode of...

As for the first question, I think torture/dehumanization is worse. Torture/dehumanization tends to put people on the brink of death more often than not. The pain that someone who is tortures experiences is surely massive and not something anyone should experience. It's like experiencing a slow death, but you're actively being kept alive so it can be done over and over. Dehumanizing acts also are quite insidious, causing lasting damage to the victim, mentally and sometimes physically.

As for surviving torture, it is better to survive, in my opinion. If society is going to ostracize them for their injuries, then they're massive fucking asshats. Let they who have also lived through an experience worse than death (literally) be the first to do that, and hopefully they're not that godawful of a person to actually go through with it.

I personally think that death is by far the worst thing possible, in every circumstance, and even if you seem fated to live a life of utter disability (like Christopher Reeve) hope exists that someday you can be saved, since technology is progressing to the point of fixing a lot of physical wounds.

But mental wounds are harder to heal, if they ever do. I've seen people who have not recovered from trauma, and never did. There's a certain level of personal involvement in trying to rehab from an emotional/psychological wound, and it takes a certain level of maturity that the majority of people simply do not have. It's why a lot of military personnel come down with PTSD these days...but not everyone does.

In that sense, I agree with Myles. People might not be able to recover from physical torture yet, but someday they could. But dehumanization/psychological terror or trauma could leave wounds that never heal.
