Yeah but you can understand why people do it. Not having to think for yourself, not having to deliberately create your own morality or history or identity, that appeals to a lot of people when this world is so terrifying in its beauty and chaos. It's not something we should just scorn as if it's the act of a stuttering sheep, everybody does this to a greater or lesser degree. Just not necessarily with a religious text.

I'm pretty sure it's literally impossible to take the Bible at its literal word nowadays, anyway.
