It's interesting to me because Nintendo doesn't care about the Hong Kong fans' protest. Japan can be threatened but this isn't the way to do it.

For example, a few years ago Al-Qaeda learned that the final fight Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part III featured a number of blasphemies toward Islam. Dio Brando was fingering through a Qu'ran, and Dio's battle with Jotaro lead to the destruction of mosques. Al-Qaeda threatened Shueisha with violence if they didn't stop distributing Jojo, and they shut down production immediately. They even forced Araki to redraw whole scenes of his manga (in his Steel Ball Run art-style, no less) as censorship, and the whole matter delayed production for several years.

So, Hong Kong weeaboos status: not scary. Al-Qaeda status: bricks.

I believe Talon told me about this a long time ago, scary stuff! I'm a huge advocate for freedom of speech (period), but this is especially true when things like a holy book or sites of worship are featured for the geographic and cultural back-drops needed for an accurate portrayal, not the intention to be a dick.

I really don't think this is as much China trying to threaten Japan as much as it is Hong Kong trying to maintain their cultural identity separate from that of the mainland. If anything, they're rebelling against the pressure from Beijing for them to shed their identity and become more Han and Mandarin culturally. A Japanese company just happens to be making a move that is moving with that current.

This is one of those situations where the fight in the grocery store isn't really about what kind of apples to buy. It isn't really about Pikachu's name, it's about the cultural implications surrounding the brand imposing the version used in China on Hong Kong. I'm sure they view this as yet another in a long line of attempts by Mainland culture to seep into Hong Kong and assimilate them into the People's Republic.

Hong Kong is very much not China, as much or likely even more than Taiwan isn't, even if they are legally part of the PRC.

From what little I know of the situation... the current plan is that Hong Kong becomes fully absorbed into China in 2047 unless something were to change for some reason, right? I'm really not up to date on this, so I could be wrong. What I also don't know is just how much Hong Kong's citizens actually want anything to do with China, or how they view their relationship.
