...Just occurred to me. I already taught Missingno. Fly. I can't teach it Hyper Beam or Rock Slide. >_< But at least I'll be able to teach it Earthquake when I get the TM (and clone it- everything except Arbok is getting Earthquake over Dig when the time comes, and even then, Arbok's keeping Dig only because it'll save me a bundle on Escape Ropes).

If only~

Just beat Misty, my team consists of Pikachu, Nidoqueen (evolved it early to learn Body Slam), Clefairy, Charmeleon and Bulbsaur.

Leveling up Bulbasaur is proving a pain. Proves just how much easier they made the later gens xd;

I'm having trouble levelling anything. The encounter rate in Red feels REALLY low compared to other games, and after trawling Mt Moon for half an hour trying to catch a Clefairy, I can testify to it being a long-ass time.

And the battle damage seems totally random. Not to mention with Critical Hits flying around every other move.

Crazy.

Ive been pretty lucky in the Nuzlocke, getting Nidoran F (now Nidorina, still level 16 though, been grinding the others) and Sandshrew and Geodude rather than Zubat (because Crobat is Zubat's only redeeming quality ESPECIALLY in Gen 1). Leveling is a pain because it's pre gen 6 and thus the switch split penalty applies. Crits are everywhere but just wait until you have to deal with sleep for real. Like beyond Route 3 Jigglypuff of nightmares (LEVEL 14 ON SOMETHING WITH BASE HP THAT HIGH FOR THAT EARLY ON WHAT THE HELL). You will be thankful for how it later allowed you to move upon waking up. I also assume most of you had to deal with bind from Brock. THAT'S THE GRANNY RUN FOR THAT STUFF. I know from a few emulated runs-wrap and its ilk are death incarnate, and God help you for Selfdestruct.

I hear that. Those Bellsprout and Weepinbell in Celadon Gym with Stun Spore and Wrap...

On the other hand, I get this urge to cackle maniacally whenever I have my Arbok spam Wrap. It's a shame I had to delete Glare in favor of Strength, but I was considering a Toxic/Wrap combo for later on anyway- I'll teach Toxic to Seadra once I get the TM.

For anyone that cares (nobody).

My team is still Fearow (Level 23) and Wartortle (Level 22). I'm trying to catch everything before going to the next area, but I realized that I wanted an Oddish but it's not in Blue. Damn it. I need to see if I know anyone irl with Red so I can trade. Anyway, I just beat Misty and going to Bill. I want something that resists electric and Oddish would have been perfect, but either way I should be ok. The AI is dumb.

I'm not sure what you mean but you can trade/battle and don't need a link cable lol.

Wouldn't Bellsprout work just as well? Hell, between a Razor Leaf that almost always crits and Generation I Wrap, I would argue Victreebel to be the better of the two (though I must say Vileplume's not bad, either). I plan to use one in Blue myself.

And you're right about the AI. I swept Surge's team with my Missingno. It didn't even take any damage, either, despite being outsped by the whole team- Voltorb's Sonic Boom missed (the real stupidity being he went for Sonic Boom at all when Tackle would probably have done even more), and Surge wasted his time using X Speeds on both Pikachu and Raichu on the turns Missingno. spent going underground. And I've swept him several times in the past, sometimes with a Raticate, sometimes with a Beedrill. Not even overleveled, either.

See, I'm still in Mt Moon after a catching spree. I need to get through and get to Misty, but equally I've just got everyone to level 11 barring the latest additions and that's nowhere near high enough if FR's Misty is anything to go by.

Also, finding Clefairy is still a ballache.

Found someone to trade me an Oddish. Traded mon level so fast, it's kicking butt. At Bill now.

Any suggestions for my other Pokemon? Rocking Wartortle/Fearow/Oddish atm. Gonna get a Drowzee probably.

tbh, I'd go with something that can ruin flying-types, maybe something a little sturdier than Fearow for the rival!Venusaur.

Fearow should handle the rival's Venusaur pretty fine actually. Drill Peck is great.

Yeah the AI is kind of dumb. As long as you have decent coverage and some levels you can clean house with anything.

oh, ok. But still, I'm horrendously underlevelled for a change, because the encounter rate is so damn low and it literally eats away at what soul I had left.

The encounter rate isn't that low. You keep going on about it, and it's not really that different from the newer games.

It feels a lot worse. In FR, Viridian Forest was a hell-hole with a battle every fifth step. In Red? I can run up and down the patch near the Pewter entrance FIVE TIMES STRAIGHT with no encounter. And then there's Mt Moon.

Here's the deal with Viridian Forest encounter rates

BORKED

EDIT: From the video description

"Later on talking to Sanquii he found out why this happens. Basically some tiles in Viridian Forest (also in Safari Zone) have different tiles, with star looking grass shapes on them. If that star is in the bottom right, that tile doesn't have encounters

http://i.imgur.com/EP1Fkvu.png -- picture of such tile for reference"

This anomaly doesn't exist in Yellow

Apparently the same thing happens in the Safari Zone. That knowledge came in handy when I was hunting down Scyther, Kangaskhan, and Tauros earlier today.
