Discord is [not] forever
For us old folks that have been around for a while, we've all seen this cycle before. A chat program! That you can use to talk with your buddies online! Wowee! Sign me the fuck up. It's so neat and sleek and does all sorts of things.
And then the UI changes. Always for the worse. And then ads, or paid features. Then things that were working fine before, suddenly don't work as well anymore. Soulless changes made to make some arbitrary number go up without considering user experience. "Man, this chat program really sucks" is the thought on everyone's mind. Wait, what's that? People are now using this NEW program? That does what it's predecessor did, but better? And more? By golly, this could never get corrupted under the rule of infinite growth! Sign me the fuck up! For us old folks, I remember a time of ICQ, then the migration to AIM, MSN, Skype, and then If you are reading this and have no idea what is going on, then I am Discord has come a long way from its humble beginnings as Guildwork. But I guess money makes people stupid. Either that, or insulation from your userbase. Or maybe both. So now I sit here and wait for whatever the next chat program may be. So I can feel excited about things once more, only to be let down by poor UI changes, useless paid features, bloat, and the eventual abandonment by the userbase. |

This is just another part of a vicious cycle where nothing is allowed to merely be successful and merely be profitable. Every thing has to continue growing, continue making more and more profit, so we get dumb changes like this which very theoretically might grab some additional users, and numbers are all that really matter. Nothing is allowed to remain in stasis, everything must be changing and adding new features and becoming bloated.
It's Netflix cracking down on password sharing because its market saturation is so high it has no other way to attract users, its websites like Youtube turning their websites into glorified mobile pages because most people are on their phones. These changes really suck but they feel completely endemic to the tech industry as a whole.

We're still on LINE! Morg needs to get a new handle though, since he lost his old one.
What attracted me to LINE back in the day was its Japanese servers, so there was less chance of American snooping. But early on, many of the distasteful changes you mentioned happening to Discord happened to LINE. Then, magically, LINE stopped supporting Windows 7. And they stopped updating the Windows 7 client. So it stopped getting progressively wose and has stayed more or less the same for me for the past ~2 years. LINE has no group function...but that's what I use UPN for, mainly.

There hasn't been any update on them reversing this. I feel like this honestly must be a push toward IPO and becoming some sort of social media site (instead of... just being a chat program).
People forget that even Rome eventually fell. Once people start leaving for X, then Discord is just going to go the way of Skype. At least UPN is eternal. |

I haven't logged on in months which is the norm. Log on, poke around a few minutes, logoff for a long time... I just never could get into discord x.x I await the next chat thingy I may or may not use!
Similar kinda deal with imgur. They've long since been trying to go social but now I read they're banning porn and deleting all images from unregistered users which gotta be at least like half the linked images on the net. Course they've also been making the site worse for ages even for those of us with an account z_z |
