Talon's First Cavity
Yeah, I know, I pretty much post everything here. :P
I had to go to the dentist again today. When I went yesterday for my cleaning, they found a cavity on my back molar on the top of my mouth. This molar is really oddly positioned (it faces the wall of the cheek at a 45° angle and I'm pretty confident it does next to nothing when I chew most foods), but anyway, the dentist found a cavity in it, and so today he: 1- numbed my mouth and then gave me a even-more-numbing shot 2- drilled a hole into the tooth, it seemed like (but I couldn't tell by feel) 3- filled that hole back up with cavity filling stuff Pretty simple procedure, I know, but having never had a cavity before, the whole thing was very new for me. The thing is ... it's 1:08pm local (I got numbed around 11:30am) and my mouth is still so numb I can't eat. I tried to eat with my fingers in my mouth guarding my cheek, but it doesn't work -- all the food falls out and I drool. (You try it!) And then I tried just eating normally, until I heard (didn't feel it -- just heard!) this squishy crunch and I realized that I was biting down on my cheek. >_> So now I am too afraid to even try to eat until the numbness goes away, although I am starving. In other news, I just beat Super Smash Bros Brawl's story mode. Took four tries, each exponentially better than the last.

Urgh, how I envy you.
No matter how much I brush (with an electric toothbrush, peroxide, and fluoride/baking soda toothpate), floss, and avoid sugary foods (save for the occasional Dr. Pepper or Reese's pieces), I get cavities all the time and had a root canal on one occasion; in fact, I'm going in tomorrow to get two filled and another checked out (that may be abcessed). ;_;

Re: Talon's First Cavity
I was able to start eating around 2:45pm. We just had dinner, and I was able to eat fine, but I still have this residual numbness in the wall of my cheek. Also, my cheek does not hurt but it feels a little inflamed -- probably from when I bit it.

Cavities aren't a big deal. :P
I had a few back in the day, but stopped getting them when I quit drinking fruit juice. |

Re: Talon's First Cavity
For a young man who used to drink soda from age 2 until age 22 with every meal he was allowed (i.e. not for elementary school lunches), I'd say I've done pretty well. But I am sort of disappointed, because I prided myself on having no cavities in spite of only brushing once a day and eating tons of chocolate, and now I can no longer make that claim.

Re: Talon's First Cavity
I've never had a cavity since I'm a compulsive tooth-brusher; twice a day at minimum and frequently after every meal (up to six times/day), especially when I'm in the bathroom. I think I'm addicted to the alcohol in the toothpaste since I don't feel comfortable unless my mouth is minty-fresh.
I did have surgery to get my wisdom teeth removed, though. I went through the same procedure as Talon for the numbing, man that was a bother.

Re: Talon's First Cavity
I drink an ungodly amount of fruit juice. That must be why I have so many tooth problems.
A few months ago, one of my fillings broke while I was eating some salmiakpastiller. I wondered if I should go see a dentist about that, but then decided that I was too lazy. I've had no pain or other problems since then, so maybe it's not a big deal? "LAZIEST UPN MEMBER AWARD: TODAY'S WINNER"

Re: Talon's First Cavity
Broken fillings can give the germs that cause cavities a place to dig in and grow, giving you another cavity. I'd get that taken care of if I were you (of course I shouldn't talk, I haven't seen the dentist in like 2 yrs).

>>2 yrs.
>>eight Ahh. So this explains everything. How frequently do the rest of you visit the dentist? I'm a bit embarassed since compared to Talon and KV I'm sort of a freak. I see mine every six months. :O

Still none, and no dentist in at least three years. I have Coca-Cola to thank.

Re: Talon's First Cavity
I am used to cavitys you are lucky to have only had one so far. I try my best to avoid sugary foods other than the occasional soda. I brush regularly and my teeth just kinda well rot in my head. Dentist once said I just had really soft teeth that and when I get my normal battery of blood work twice a year to check the level of the Bipolar meds in my system and that they are not frying said system it tends to come back my calcium is low despite my best efforts to correct it. You are lucky cause root canals and having teeth pulled is hell on earth especialy so if you are resistant to pain killers and such.

Re: Talon's First Cavity
Doppel, you are a freak. :P (Zing!)
... but not for that reason. :P (Oh SNAP!) I kid, I kid. :P ^_^ I think going once every 6 months for me would be uncalled for because remember: - I drank 3 20 oz. bottles of Pepsi every day from March 1 2000 to March 1 2008 - I did not visit the dentist once in that window of time - I brushed once a day tops, i.e. occasionally might forget to brush or not have time or something - I never flossed, and still will not floss (too much hassle!) And in spite of all of that, I got, and I quote, "a small cavity we've caught just in time!" Caught 'just in time' ... WHEN IT'S BEEN EIGHT YEARS SINCE THE LAST VISIT. For most people, catching a cavity "just in time" means it would have become really bad if another 6 months to a year had gone by. Yet for me, Señor Soda, it took 8 years of bad oral habits to even reach a small cavity. I think that even if I change nothing about my eating and brushing habits, this will probably be my last cavity now that I've given up soda (it's been 4½ months!).

I had 2 cavities on the same tooth, so BRING IT. And to top it all off, I have 2 teeth missing because there never were ADULT TEETH to replace them, so they (dentist) pulled the baby ones out and they (orthodontist) put braces to enclose the space. So I win?

Re: Talon's First Cavity
I had one small cavity the dentist caught just it had started growing.
That's it, that's all I've had. Then again, I've had my teeth sealed twice >_> I desperately need to get braces, however. My two front teeth are very crooked, which makes me rather self-conscious about smiling for the camera >_<

Re: Talon's First Cavity
Safe to say I drank a lot more junk than you, Talon, and I'm still cavity free at 23. Winner is me =o
