I just read that new directors will be directing VIII and IX, not Abrams. Looks like Disney, in not putting all their eggs into one basket, would rather be assured of at least one well-received sequel than three equally horrid ones. Without seeing the films, there's still no telling how good a job any of the three directors will have done. We'll just have to wait and see.
Been avoiding spoilers and any trailers newer than the second teaser. Am thinking I might try to keep it that way, especially since the movie is now only four months away. Four months away. :o Four months until a brand new Star Wars movie.

Presumably they're scared of the Joel Schumacher effect.

JJ Abrams for VII, Rian Johnson (Looper, three episodes of Breaking Bad including Fifty One and Ozymandias) for VIII, and Colin Tevorrow (Jurassic World) for IX . Then Rogue One is being directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla), and the Han Solo story is being done by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, Lego Movie).
For screenwriters, Lawrence Kasdan (Empire, Return of the Jedi, Raiders of the Lost Ark) is working on VII, and Rian Johnson is also working on the scripts for VIII and the story at least for IX. Lawrence Kasdan and his son are writing the Han Solo one, though I imagine Lord and Miller will handle the humor because that's what they fucking do. And then Rogue One has Chris Weitz, who... well honestly doesn't have a great resume but oh well they can't all be winners. At least it has Alan Tudyk cast in it for some solid nerd cred. |

Somehow managed to wiggle my way into the crashing and burning ticket site servers Monday night and secure two tickets for a premiere night IMAX screening.
Now to hope it was worth it and won't be interrupted by hundreds of screaming nerds. |

Having been to a midnight screening of Star Trek Into Darkness at my local IMAX (admittedly at last minute - my ex and I were coming out of another film at 11:40 and thought 'why not?') - Good luck with that.

Yeah, not to be a downer but it's probably a waste of your money to get opening night tickets if you don't want a noisy audience. Only exception would be that "talk and we toss you out; also we serve beer" movie theater in Texas.

Lack of focus on Jedi doing magic force bullshit, inclusion of many characters who are not confirmed force users: approve.

Admittedly there was a louder audience when I saw STID at Reading Festival in one of the tents, but that was mostly because it was 2 am and everyone was waaaaaaaaasted.

Folks and work wouldn't stop talking about this. I myself have no interest, I was way more hyped to see The Martian and I'm glad I did in spite of some of the silliness toward the end.
Maybe if the title was, "The Empire Rises" or something and the Force was completely removed as a concept from the movies, maybe I'd watch. But otherwise no way. Not anymore.

I read it. It wasn't satisfying for me because a good chunk of it can be attributed to George Lucas' hamfisted attempt at writing.
But it's right on the two major points - biology and centralising the story. The Jedi ARE the focus of every Star Wars game since the '90s that isn't set deliberately in the Galactic Civil War, where the Jedi are extinct. Reducing the cultural diversity and hard sci-fi splash of Star Wars to just superheroes in space is not cool. I've yet to see people enunciate why Midochlorians are bad, although it's pretty cleary why. The reason is that it's fundamentally a recasting of the Force as a supernatural, faith-based entity as a purely natural one. In the original films, Force sensitivity was as much a willingness to believe as anything else. Droids can't believe in it. Han Solo was a grounded skeptic. But Luke, impressionable and full of hope, was receptive to it. Heck, the X-Wing trial in Empire was framed purely as a faith/lack of faith exercise. There's a clear analogy in the real world - faith in God can create miracles, and God touches you even if you don't believe. The final problem I have with the "new" Force is that it's changed the philosophy spectrum. In the original trilogy, the Light Side was grounded in Eastern philosophy, so manipulation of the Force was achieved through detachment to self and acceptance of the world's transience. Obi-wan and Yoda were willing to pass on and donate their egos to The Force, even though people needed them in this world. By contrast, the Dark Side was about embracing emotion (any possessive emotion, not just hate - love applied too), embracing your current life even if you have to sustain it unnaturally (Palpatine is like a zombie, while Vader needs life support), and exploiting power to dominate your environment. These concepts were apparently too difficult, so the Light Side became "positive emotions" like love, while the Dark Side became "negative emotions" like hatred. Except it's all inter-connected, dumb-arses. That was the whole point of the Force having "sides". Together, they make up the psyche of a normal person, but the Jedi/Sith deliberately (and nihilistically) migrate to the poles due to the power they offer, even if that power is applied differently. I'm pretty sure Abrams totally ignored this stuff.

Friendly warning: the world premiere already took place and details have leaked to the Internet. In turn, Internet trolls have decided to have some fun by spoiling the movie. If not getting spoiled matters to you, then I would encourage you to opt out of sites like Reddit, Imgur, and maybe even larger web forums like Serebii or Bulbagarden until you have a chance to watch the film for yourself.

So having just watched The Force Awakens, it was actually pretty good. There was the odd plothole here and there but all in all it was solid. Easily better than parts of the prequels, imo.

I kind of loved it (Saw it last night). Should we make a star wars spoiler thread so we can discuss it and stuff?

No need for multiple threads. Discuss away here while using spoiler tags with proper labels. No spoiler tags required for any Episode IV, V, VI, I, II, or III discussion in this thread. For reference, when I made the thread for the prequels' discussion, I said people could discuss IV, V, and VI without having to use spoiler tags but that it would be courteous if they chose to tag Episode II or III discussion.
I'd say it's fair game to toss away the spoiler tags here once the movie comes out on home video in a few months. (Edit: here in this thread, I mean. Elsewhere, you should still be courteously mindful that others may not have seen the film yet.)

I have not seen it, but rather a comment on how much I hate seeing Star Wars on things unrelated to Star Wars. I've seen ads and products that have nothing to do with Star Wars having those words plastered all over it to the point I actually am sickened by it. Seriously? Make up? Cars? Unless that car is flying hovercraft, it doesn't deserve to have Star Wars anywhere near it.
