I had just played a game where my entire team was weak to Fire, weak to Electric, and slower than Zapdos. And he had a Zapdos out at 98% health with Heat Wave and Thunderbolt. Didn't go well, forfeit when it was 2-5.

Then the reverse happens here. It almost started off the same way again. I had a Wailord lead vs. his superior Blastoise (soon revealed to be Mega Blastoise). And my choices of switch-ins? Raichu, who beats Blastoise but lacks any bulk with which to take a launched aura attack. Three Pokémon weak to Water. (I can only remember Archeops.) And one Pokémon with defenses even shallower than Raichu's, in no position to be switched in mid-turn.

Thankfully, he stayed in on Wailord rather than switching out to someone new while Wailord did nothing aside from succumbing to Toxic. This was what I was hoping would happen -- I needed a clean switch-in for Raichu, anything to get him out there and begin to turn the tide of battle to my favor.

Betting that he would switch out, I went for the "free" Nasty Plot. It was a calculated risk. I had to hope that Raichu could at least survive a single Mega Launcher'd Water Pulse or other aura/pulse attack. If he couldn't ...

My opponent switched out to his best possible Raichu counter -- a Dedenne. Even without his Nuzzle gift, I was proven able to 2HKO the Dedenne with just my 2x modifier from Nasty Plot and my STAB Thunderbolt.

After Dedenne came Delphox. Raichu outspeeds. OHKO.

It was like dominoes. Next came Tornadus-T. Then came Pidgeot. Next was Walrein. And finally ...

With Blastoise dispensed, the score was 5-0. Could have easily been 0-5. Was 0-5 in my previous game.

The reason why the Dragonite set works so well is that it has Roost to heal itself. And then when it's at full HP it has Multiscale, which does it wonders. Like I just think it's super cool to see Fly of all moves used in some of the highest level competitions.

The reason why Fly is used at all is purely because its a STAB that can't be walled completely. I'm pretty sure this set was in Gen V too, just with Dragon Claw over Fly.

No the Lando set was something my friend came up with at the beginning of ORAS, but then we ditched it until we saw it again on the ladder a few weeks back. of course Dnite is better but it was a funnny moment

Brutal RandTriples battle. (? turns, click to find out!)

Spoiler: show
The plan had been to burn a Shell Smash Barbaracle, flinch a Rampardos so he couldn't kill Pyroar, 2HKO Rampardos with Empoleon's Flash Cannon, and ignore Torkoal on Turn 1 because even if he Shell Smashed and had Ground moves I wasn't too scared.

But my opponent switches out Barbarcle for a Kricketune ...

And switches out Torkoal for a Tornadus ...

And so the only damage he would have gotten to do this turn, with Rampardos, he's denied thanks to Fake Out ...

And then I almost OHKO him with Empoleon.

And we're only just getting started.

Because then Turn 2 happens, and I KO all three of his Pokémon and the only thing he's able to do in that time is lay down a piddling Sticky Web that won't even matter because I'm not switching out because I'M ABOUT TO 6-0 THIS BABY!--

oh wait you just forfeited. ^^;

Two turns. In just two turns, the score was 6-3 and all he had to show for it was one Sticky Web.

My queen. (Random Battle, 13 turns)

Spoiler: show
There are so many interesting Diancie sets in Gen 6 that I still haven't collected mine from the Pokémon Center in Y. I hate being locked in to only one set, one reason why I have so many multiples of the creatures I do breed.

In this battle we get the dedicated Special sweeper. I really want mixed Diancie the most, because I love the idea of signature moves and I hate that the Special sweeper's set is necessarily missing Diamond Storm. It also doesn't help matters that Smogon advises you go big HP:Fire or go home. That means you not only have to aim for great IVs in your little rock princess but that you've got to aim for a specific lock combination of them too. :\ No amount of breeding can help you here.

But because I haven't created my Diancie yet, I haven't played with her that much. And because I've not played with her, it's always a treat when I can take her out for a test spin like this. Whenever I've tried to use her in OU, shoehorned into my last real OU team before I unintentionally retired from the ladder, I've had poor results. She tends to die early, she tends to not be able to pull off any sweeps, etc. But whenever I'm lucky enough to get her in Random Battle, she tends to be pretty darn good.

Take this battle, for example. You'd think Beartic would've been the star, what with that 2-KOs-before-falling-himself business. But no, Diancie then comes in and cleans house. Forces a switch during which she knows she can Calm Mind. Then proceeds to wreck face with a combination of Psyshock, Moonblast, and HP:Fire. If I didn't know any better, I'd say it was perfectly crafted to take down my opponent's randomly generated team. It was that good.

The coup de grace comes when Mega Diancie, despite having only 36.7% HP remaining, manages to survive Deoxys-S's Psycho Boost attack, hanging on with just 1% HP, and fires off a Moonblast for the OHKO. Not only does she KO four of my opponent's Pokémon, but hand-in-hand with that statistic she's left me sitting pretty with a final score of 5-0, me only having ever lost the Beartic.

My heart might belong to Diamond Storm Diancie, but maaaaaaaaaaan if I don't want the dedicated Special sweeper variant too.

"Wow he got stupidly greedy." (Random Battle, 8 turns)

Spoiler: show
The first time he used Swords Dance, I remarked, "He got greedy."

But the second time he used Swords Dance, after it was already clear that I was going for Serene Grace paraflinch hax, I was shocked. "Wow, he got greedy! " That one-in-five chance of neither being flinched nor paralyzed was squandered on a second Swords Dance when what it really needed to be used for was a Crabhammer or other move likely to OHKO me.

For those wondering why the battle started off the way it did: Virizion had no Grass attacks and I was worried about an incoming Psychic attack. Did not expect Calm Mind, much less Baton Pass on top of it.

The mental game of RBY

205 turns, so really long battle. But it really showcases the mental game of a stall war. My biggest regret from this narrow loss is that I should've been more aggressive. There was twice during the game where if I would've picked Hyper Beam instead of Body Slam it would have put me in a much better position. Once during his Alakazam stall and the other at the very end of the game when it came down to just my Tauros and his Starmie. Really fun game, even though a large chunk was PP Stall.

Nothing special, but I do have a Choice Scarf Kyogre. (Random Battle, 24 turns)

Spoiler: show
Only posting this one to log that I made it to 1654, my highest score yet since the most recent server reset. I haven't played much on PS since the last server reset; by the time I played my first game, the ladder's cutoff for top 500 was already 1900 points or higher. 1654 is probably "the entry level of mid-tier" with the current scores, if I had to guess -- if we had to assume that 1900 is the cutoff for entry into what can be classified as top tier. While I'm not really trying to ladder right now -- annual server resets demotivate me in that regard; wish they were either more or less frequent -- I had set a soft goal for myself of laddering past 1600, no time limit, and holding it. Finally did that today, breaking into the 1600s for the first time since the reset and then winning two additional games right after that. Next goal will be 1700. Again, not actively pursuing it. More of a, "If it happens, it happens -- but will bring small joy to my heart " kind of thing.

Delcatty's unlikely win. (Random Battle, 33 turns)

Spoiler: show
Unremarkable battle save for the very end where Delcatty wins us the match with two Fake Outs not even with two Fake Outs. Through the grace of God rain ends and Delcatty outspeeds the lumbering behemoth that is Mega Swampert. Double-Edge for the win and a swift departure from the room by my opponent.

To be fair, though, it was pretty bullshit (in his favor) that Flying Gem Acrobatics Jumpluff didn't manage to OHKO Trevenant. 4% HP after both SR damage and Flying Gem Acrobatics, I mean, c'mon. If Trevenant would've died in that one turn then the win would have been mine 3-0.
