The 721 Pokemon Naming Challenge
Back in the day there was a very popular 'Name The 151 Pokemon' Challenge, so when I stumbled upon this I was too excited to come here and share it with you all!
I knew I wouldn't be able to get 721 (mostly due to Generation V and VI and my awful memory) but I got a rather pitiful 216. I completely blanked on lots of middle evolutions of evolution lines I thought I was confident with, like the middle Ice Cream Pokemon and the all middle starter evolutions after Generation 3. Not to mention I forgot so many Pokemon I love in the heat of the moment under the pressure (I'm sorry Luvdisc! I'm sorry Zebstrika!). Made me also realise how many Pokemon I literally had just forgotten existed, like Chatot! And also I totally realised it's got to the point where in the later generations I can't remember which Pokemon belong in which generation. Lots of Pokemon in Generation 4 and 5 I had to double take on and think 'wait, really?'. Also Generation 4 is huge and then 5 and 6 added so few Pokemon comparatively. http://www.psypokes.com/quiz/amnesiaattack/allpokemon Have a go, post your score! Let the fun begin xd; |

I gave it about ten minutes and got to 221, left because of wanting to do other things.
My overall starting strategy is: Starters>Legends>Pseudos>Fossils>Megas>Regional rodent>Regional bird>Pokken roster Then I just put in what pops to mind.

Got 326. Not too bad for 5 AM.
It seems I only missed 8 in Gen 1, and did worse and worse as the gens went on. |

482/721 with 7 minutes left, had to stop because of family arriving. I'll have a proper go later.
EDIT: In the full time on try 2, I got 559. I will do this repeatedly until I can get all 721. I'll see if I can do it. I seem to forget large chunks of gens 1, 3 and surprisingly, 4.

Did it, got 529, so pretty good I guess. Having not played Gen 6 I missed a lot there, other than that the spread was pretty even. Missed some pretty obvious ones like the Porygon line, Psyduck line, and Blissey/Happiny even though I remembered Chansey.

I WAS SO FRIGGIN' CLOSE! >_< 708 out of 721! Only missed Shellder, Cloyster, Shuckle, Meditite, Medicham, Electrike, Manectric, Baltoy, Claydol, Cherubi, Cherrim, and oddly enough, Mismagius and Honchkrow, despite getting their pre-evolutions no problem.

I got 429. My goal was to remember more than half, so mission accomplished, but I'm disappointed in myself for missing some of the ones I did. After looking at what I missed I feel like I should have been in IT's range, maybe a bit lower. Here's the breakdown:
Gen 1: 121/151, ~80% Really kicking myself for missing anything, but especially the Nido lines. Realistically, this is the only gen where I feel like I could have gotten everything. Gen 2: 52/100, 52% Disappointingly low. And as a UPN member I should be ashamed for missing Jumpluff and Wobbuffett lines Gen 3: 87/135, ~64% Ruby was my first game so I thought this would be my best. Guess I'm a genwunner after all. Gen 4: 71/107, ~66% Wait I did better in Gen 4 too? Definitely not expecting that. I guess I did start competitive battling in Gen 4 so that might have something to do with it. Gen 5: 70/156, ~45% I feel like I definitely still should have gotten a majority of Pokemon here so I'm a bit disappointed. Especially because I missed a bunch of favorites: Krookodile, Chandelure, Haxorus. This is also the first gen where I missed any of the legendaries. Gen 6: 28/72, ~39% Yikes. I should probably replay Y to refresh my memory.

I had 336 at the 20-minute mark. (No photo.) But I took the full 40 minutes, and I got 528. I was on a roll and could've gotten many more but no excuses!
It's interesting to see different fans' biases of information and memory recall. Looking at my own test, for instance:
Evolutions tend to be really easy. Once you remember anybody in the line, it's like a game of Battleship: you know there are hits nearby and it's just a matter of recalling their names. Single-stage Pokémon are a lot harder: either you remember them or you don't. (Both of my Gen 1 omissions were single stagers, for example, and I also see Qwilfish, Shuckle, and Torkoal on my list.) It's interesting to see the cases where you don't remember an entire line. For instance, I remembered Mantine but couldn't for the life of me remember the baby's name -- even though I'm holding onto one right now in FB! I could remember Axew (anime) and Haxorus (Smogon hop, skip, and a jump from Axew), but because Fraxure neither featured prominently in the anime nor in the competitive scene his name was lost to me. I could remember Beheeyem (Smogon) but not Elgyem (the previous stage) for similar reasons. This was a really fun forty minutes. I'm disappointed I couldn't ace the exam, which at first I thought I could do in ten minutes (never mind forty!), but I'm pretty satisfied with my score.

See, the ones I missed were odd. Because the 'mons I used' category, or what I remember of it, is disappointingly small, with like, thirty lines maximum across Red, FR, HG, 2 runs on OR, DPPt, W, W2 and 3 runs on Y. So I was missing the odds and ends like most of gens 2 and 3, and a surprisingly large chunk of early-game gen 4.

575/721, overall.
Kanto - 134/151 - 88% (Not too terrible.) Johto - 70/100 - 70% (Never was big on Johto, but I can't forgive myself for forgetting Jumpluff's line.) Hoenn - 130/135 - 96% (HOENN 4 LYFE.) Sinnoh - 85/107 - 79% (Got most of the evolutions they added but missed several completely new mon) Unova - 108/156 - 69% (My knowledge of Unova is shoddy at best.) Kalos - 48/72 - 66% (I use/really like some of the ones I missed. I'm gonna pin that on pressure.)

Ok, third and best run so far, 623/721.
Breakdown Kanto: 138/151. ...Wow. I wouldn't mind the surprisingly high score, but I should really have remembered the ones I forgot, I've had most of them in ASB at some point or another, and Cubone's a lynchpin. Johto: 78/100. ...Mostly Bugs and Kanto lines. I apparently completely forgot the Chansey line existed. Hoenn: 105/135. Never liked hoenn, unmemorable for me. Sinnoh: 94/107. Well. Such a fail for me, forgetting the first region mons like this. Especially as I still have boxes full of Budew and Shellos, too. Unova: 145/156. Wow. Can't say I remembered all of the ones I missed, but I recognized most of them other than the Tympole line. Which annoys me because Palpitoad was fucking everywhere in White. Kalos: 65/72. So damn close... AND I forgot to put volcanion.

Tried again by generation (they have a function that divides the mon up by generation)
Kanto: 143/151 95% A Johto: 100/100 100% A (6 seconds to spare) Hoenn: 131/135 97% A Sinnoh: 104/107 97% A Unova: 146/156 94% A Kalos: 65/72 90% A- Did much better when they were split up by home region... interesting. |
