Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra

I can't believe we don't have this thread yet. Why don't we have this thread yet?!

I felt the need to share this; Nick has put the first two episodes of The Legend of Korra online today!

To those who haven't watched all of Avatar: The Last Airbender, SPOILERS! Do not, whatever you do, visit that site.

Now; Let's talk about how this show is one of the most epic cartoons in the history of Western animation.

edit: OH MY GOSH THE QUALITY IS SO INCREDIBLE

WHOEVER SIGNED THE PAPERS TO UP THEIR BUDGET NEEDS TO BE GIVEN A DAMN MEDAL <333

I had the same problem as Pengy with the original link - I assume it's a region thing. Mirrors seem to work though (famous last words).

This thread is making me want to get my fishzilla avatar back.

Not got time to watch episodes now, but I'll try to get around to it tonight.

S'pretty good. Tenzin is not what I expected at all though, has to be said.

I was gunna wait until tonight to watch these but I really can't wait. Time to make some cereal and watch Korra. Thoughts no doubt incoming.

Initial thoughts:

Tenzin: Get me pictures of Spider-Man!

”Welcome to Republic City”

Spoiler: show
What a great opening to the series! I really like Korra – it looks like she’s a better firebender than waterbender, which completely challenges the concept of avatars struggling with their opposing element. I think they really emphasised her raw strength in the flashback, but I’m pretty sure her lack of restraint is going to bite her in the back as the series goes on. Also, I’m a real fan of her VA – as always the creators hit the nail on the head with all the voices.

The part where Katara was cut off about Zuko’s mother was so annoying xD I really hope that was just to foreshadow an upcoming flashback episode. Oh, and my favourite scene from the episode was definitely the “My eyes are watching you” between Korra and Toph’s daughter. I lol’d. The final scene with the anti-benders was promising, they haven’t appeared as a huge threat just yet but I imagine that’ll all change as the series develops.

"A Leaf in the Wind"

Spoiler: show
This episode was the better of the two in my opinion. I was a big fan of the animation – and the pro-bending scenes were awesome. I was kind of shocked at how Korra incinerated those airbender door-things: It kind of reminded me of the airbender genocide :/ But only really bothered me for half a second on account of the pro-bending part.

I really like the fire ferret brothers, it looked like they were trying to ship Bolin with Korra at first but this flew completely out of the window when Mako turned up. I’m pretty sure she’ll end up with Bolin cause he’s the underdog, but I don’t think this’ll stop all the Makorra fans going crazy. I took a look at the boards before posting and it’s already started – Mako fangirls galore!

The scene where Tenzin started rooting for Korra was pretty sweet, I love Tenzin mostly on account of JK Simmons.

Those were really good. They really kept the feel of the original Avatar series, but transitioned well into a new era and setting. Had a lot of laugh out loud moments too!

Probably because you just ruined the entire first series for yourself without heeding my warning in the first minute of the first episode alone.

So Dr Doom has moved to Republic City and is in charge of the anti-bender movement? Interesting. Will also be interesting to see how tey handle that in general - whether they make them have a valid point (which they kinda do) or whether it's entirely strawman. Will also be interesting to see, assuming they're enemies, how they have non-benders present a challenge to Korra et al in a fight. Pro-bending seemed fairly entertaining, if so different to a real fight that it'll be interesting to see how Moko and Bolin handle themselves in an actual fight. Took me some time to work out the rules (given the fire ferrets won their fight despite losing two of the three rounds).

It also occurs to me that (although it's true we've only seen two episodes), Tenzin hasn't done any fighting yet (he's only airbended at all once, iirc), so here's hoping he turns out a bit like Iroh - basically never fights but when he does you're screwed if you're not on his side.

So speaking of Iroh, I just wanted to say I couldn't help myself and watched the last 4 eps of S1 last night, and when you say "basically [he] never fights but when he does you're screwed if you're not on his side", HOLY COW are you right. I forgot how badass he really is.

Yeah, I rewatched some of it recently and at the end of season three
Spoiler: show
when Aang is off learning the Deus Ex Machina and no-one knows where he is, Zuko goes to Iroh as the only other real hope of defeating Ozai. Shame that fight never happened, would've been absolutely epic.

Also re-reading my previous post, apparently I'm "interested to see" a lot of things :p.

From those non-episode previews and some long revealed details:

Spoiler: show
"Dr. Doom" uses technology to replace element bending. i.e. Stun Batons.

Spoiler: show
He also uses martial arts to perform chi blocking attacks to stop benders from having an advantage like Zuko's sister's friend used. Forgot her name at the moment. =x Ty Lee.

If you've seen the original series:

Spoiler: show
I really liked how they mentioned Zuko's mom only to have it cut off. It was a great nod off to the fans with questions on what happened after the ending. Hopefully we'll get some details about it later on. It was also nicely done with the children.

When they mentioned that I busted out laughing. Absolutely brilliant, excellent fanservice if I've ever seen it.

This is a good series. The first two eps of Korra are better than the first two eps of Last Airbender, IMO.

Well, the original series needed to introduce us all to universe as a whole. Legend of Korra only needs to show us the changes since the last series and requires a lot less explanation.

Also, Legend of Korra is planned to only be 26 episodes long while Last Airbender was 52. You need to pick up and go right away when you have only half the air time.
