Vuvuzelas are the kind of thing that should never be pointed out to a television viewer.

Going to the games themselves, it would be hard to ignore them. But even before someone points out they're the source of the noise, simply pointing out there is a noise is the first step toward animosity.

Now, instead of latching on to the announcer's voice, as I have been when watching WC videos in the past, my brain is scanning for the background vuvuzelas so it can torture me.

It's not even all that annoying a sound, it's just...ubiquitous.

I wish it worked this way, but unfortunately for every picture I've seen of a black child or adult blowing into a vuvuzela I've seen another of some American or European yuppie with paint all over his face blowing into one, too.
There are a LOT of white South Africans.

That's why there was, yanno, apartheid. It was a pretty big deal and stuff.

How so? They tied 2-2. That's 2 points better than I'd thought they'd do. ;p Any time America scores, I am surprised.

Last goal should have counted is the way the Americans see it.

Slovenia were 2 up and shabby defending let them down. They could have shut the door but USA fought back when they probably shouldn't have been allowed to.

As an England fan, I'm gutted. At 2-0, I was hoping we'd have the pressure lifted from Slovenia's win, but they got sloppy and let in two poor goals after such a beauty of a first goal. Better than Forlan's.

Also, the US had a perfectly good third disallowed by the ref for pushing in the box when if there was a foul, it was on an American player.

That's the strangest way of phrasing that sentence I can imagine, but fair enough.

Saturday's game, between Cameroon and Denmark, was a pretty dull and frustrating game outside of one five-minute interval in which four or five almost-goals were made by both teams combined. Outside of that, the plays felt really jerky and amateurish. Cameroon was bull-headedly aggressive to the point that they stole the ball with ease but then gave it up just as quickly, attempting goals from as far back as 10 meters from halfway down the pitch. Denmark played ridiculously defensively and their goal attempts, few as they were, were just as frustrating to watch. IMO a bad game, would not want to re-watch it in the future.

I missed Sunday's game between Brazil and the Ivory Coast. But I heard it ended in 3-1.

I woke up this morning to learn about the outcome of Portugal's game against North Korea.

...

...

7-0

Holy shit, the DPRK got steamrolled. Officially the largest score I've ever heard of in my entire life (7 goals!?!?!?), as well as the largest disparity of goals I've ever heard of in my entire life (7 goals!?!?!?).

Yes, but that's hardly the focus of my attention. I'm talking about Portugal -- one of the most highly-rated -- not holding back at all, playing as though they were playing a major contender for the Cup. You could say that that's better sportsmanship than holding back, but there's something to be said for Brazil's approach against the Ivory Coast yesterday (3-1). Perhaps Brazil didn't play against them like they would have played against a European team, but at least they didn't utterly humiliate them, either. At least Ivory Coast fans can go home and say "We scored a goal against Brazil! " or "Brazil only beat us by two points! "

North Korea, on the other hand, was publically humiliated. The nation may deserve it, but the players?

I wouldn't say they were humiliated at all. They couldn't afford a private training ground because they cost so much to hire out so they trained in a public gym before the games. To score a goal against Brazil and only lose 2-1 is fantastic for them; they'll shrug off the loss and be proud of anything they get.

You seem to be mixing stories and/or misreading my post. I said North Korea were humiliated by Portugal. I specifically said that the Ivory Coast weren't humiliated by Brazil. That's my entire point: that Brazil held back and refrained from humiliating a lesser team, whereas Portugal didn't hold back and clobbered an inferior team.

North Korea scored against Brazil and only lost 2-1. Brazil didn't hold back against Ivory Coast.

Man, the last time I saw something like that was Germany-Saudi Arabia back in '02 (8-0). I never thought I'd get to watch such a total wipeout ever again during a World Cup.
