YouTube and cutting up videos.

So I've made recordings and want to upload them to YouTube, but then I find YouTube has this inane ten minute limit on video length, meaning the service is practically useless to be unless I cut up some of my videos.

I obtained VirtualDub but it doesn't seem to like "xvid" or "divx" codecs (...woah, I never noticed the anagram), and I don't know how to convert what I have.

So, I am left with three questions.

1. Is there a way to circumnavigate YouTube's ten minute policy?
2. Is there a way to load my videos and cut them up in VirtualDub?
3. If no to the above, what can I use to cut up my videos?

...

Also, talk about preserving quality after YouTube compression would be appreciated as well.

I used Windows Movie Maker or whatever it's called. Works like a charm.

I thought YouTube did away with the 10 minute limit recently?

Re: YouTube and cutting up videos.

VitualDub can be used to cut movies. You just select the region you want cut and hit "Delete" or I think there's that option in the "Edit" menu as well.
You can upload movies that are longer than 10 minutes too, but you have to be the "director" of the movie, whatever that means.

Re: YouTube and cutting up videos.

Both VirtualDub and Widows Movie Maker tell me I have insufficient codec to load my movies.

...

I don't even know where to begin to get that stuff.

My mistake is like not knowing the Nine Orphans hand in mahjong exists (and has nothing to do with perceptive intelligence); yours is like not knowing that Wario is Mario with the first letter upside-down.

Re: YouTube and cutting up videos.

Don't encode your clips before editing; save as raw AVI and virtualdub works like a charm. No worries about filesize, since they can't take up local disk space once they're on Youtube.
