Just from the samples, I was gonna ask "Is it a Makoto Shinkai movie?"... And I thought that was the reason Talon wouldn't watch it. ^^;

Anyway, turns out I'm totally right and it's Makoto Shinkai. XP Which in turn proves my point that while his movies are gorgeously animated, they all pretty much look the same and tell the same story. So if you're just looking for more examples of beautiful animation, you can easily check out any of his other films and not miss much. (Note: None of them have foot fetishes.) The one I'd personally most recommend is 5 Centimeters per Second.

It's funny Talon makes the assertion that the animators are foot fetishists though, since Makoto Shinkai's movies have pretty much been described as "art/scenery porn". XD Guess he's moved on from clouds to human body parts at least. ^^; (Btw, he has worked on H-games before. See the demo movies to the Ef series.)

P.S. Pretty music in the trailer though.

Its another arc. All of the shows are adapted from different books and their titles are often used as arcs. Normally there's only 2 or 3 books that are done, but this season is adapting 5 of the books (you might already know this but mehweiufbqowieuf). I don't know what other books are being adapted, but Nekomogatari: Shiro has just passed, and I believe Kabukimonogatari is the one coming this week.

Not really a spoiler but a point about coming arcs:
Spoiler: show
Also, I believe that the story arcs coming up are all taken from different characters narratives, just like Hanekawa's arc was. I think Kabuki is an Araragi arc, however. I'd love to see a Kanbaru or a Tsukihi narrative

What I got from watching the trailer was that it was some kind of inverted cause-and-effect Cinderella where the girl was cursed so that no shoe would ever fit her and this young and inspired cobbler set out to create the shoes that would break the curse.

...I guess I was very, very wrong?

I watched The Garden of Words ages ago.

It's not about foot fetishism. It's about a young guy who makes shoes meeting a woman who has trouble walking and probably depression - these two spend rainy days meeting up and talking about things. The guy ends up wanting to make a pair of shoes for her that would be the kinda shoes that make her want to walk around in them.

It's a sweet romantic drama and there's nothing sexual about it apart from a rumor mill the other high school kids have going about the teacher.

I'd actually recommend people to watch it.

Mass double-posting a go-go!

I'm re-watching the Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensei series and found this little gem:

I wasn't aware of this! But hey, I've never had a cavity in my life.

Have you since looked into it and found whether there's any truth to it or not? Seems too absurd to be true ...

It's not true. No such thing happens in Finland.

Wish I knew how the Z-Sensei staff comes up with all these random texts that can be found in almost every frame of the anime.

I dunno the context, but it seems kinda more like they're saying that there's folklore that if you have a cavity, you were held back, not that if you have a cavity you're held back. So, the reverse cause-and-effect of what you were saying.

Again, an entirely uninformed opinion.

Apparently this is a reference to Finland's obsession with xylitol and possibly dental health in general. Xylitol products (gum, pastilles, etc.) are encouraged and given out to people a lot. If you go to a junk food joint and order a kids' meal in Finland, it will include two pieces of xylitol gum for the kid to chew on after eating the meal.

Dental health is pretty good here, I don't think I knew a single kid in my class up to grade 7-8 that had a cavity discovered in the dentist's check-up (which were done once or twice a year all the way from kindergarten to high school - sponsored by the government for minors, so it was free till you turned 18 ). There was a huge study on the effects of xylitol here in the 1970's that's apparently a big deal in the dental health community.

Xylitol also helps prevent inner ear infections and stuff. :3 As far as I've understood though, it's not all that common in other parts of the world...

Also, found out that Uchouten Kazoku is apparently drawn by the same mangaka as the one who made Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensei. Same as with Gin no Saji: didn't even think of it, but now I see the tell-tale art choices and styles EVERYWHERE.

whaaaaaaat?!

It's a sugar that's very low-cal and actually GOOD FOR YOUR TEETH.

Hearing about the lack of xylitol in the world is like when I discovered rye bread being sold as vacuum-packed "special sports bread" in Germany.

Hope you don't mind if I answer you here, Kaisa. I'd rather the answer be public since it's likely to get lost if it's in PMs.

The Nidaime manga started in December 2010, according to Wikipedia. (I thought it was Fall 2010 or possibly even 2009, but I guess not.) The original Genshiken was nine volumes long; the sequel is fourteen five volumes long and still running. (2013/08/18 edit: Wikipedia had goofed and done 9 + 5 = 14 for Nidaime.)

But as for the pop culture references in the anime being current, that's a separate issue from the manga. The Nidaime manga, for example, made quite a few references to Fullmetal Alchemist. This was probably because the reboot, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, had just finished airing earlier that year and was very popular. We haven't seen that many (or any?) FMA:B references yet. The original anime adaptation made heavy references to Guilty Gear which, at the time, was the fighter of choice amongst the hardcore fighting game otaku scene. The manga made some references to it too but they were much lighter -- nothing like the product placement seen in the television adaptation.

Also, while a lot of Nidaime's references feel new, you have to keep in mind just how scarily time has flown over the past few years. ^_^; At least I know it has for me. ^^;; Ika Musume technically predates the Nidaime manga (the TV show had just started airing in Fall 2010 but the manga goes as far back as 2007), and Bayonetta likewise came out in Japan back in Fall 2009, a full year and two months before the first chapter of Genshiken Nidaime was published. So while I don't know whether these Easter eggs are present in the TV series only or are present in the manga too, I do know that it's not beyond the realm of reason for them to have shown up in the manga.

Okay, gotta agree with the flow of time thing. ^-^; I only know that Bayonetta 2 is coming out soon and I've been following that process, so I keep forgetting I still lived with my parents when the first Bayonetta came out - and still did when I first got my Xbox 360 and the game itself.

It's fun to see how well you pick up on references in Genshiken and Nidaime - I barely caught any at all in the first series (I was around 15-16 when I first watched it!), but I'm recognizing nearly 60-80% of (visual) references in Nidaime. I'm torn between thinking "I'm so damn old" and "I'm such a brat in the anime scene"!

Finally! After almost two weeks of constant reading, I'm finally done with Grisaia no Kajitsu! I'll do a fairly detailed review (atleast by my standards), since I feel this title deserves it. Hell, I'm behind on my anime because I'd rather read this. Until I finish, here's some final words of wisdom from Makina!

My cable modem has died, so the following are delayed indefinitely:
- Genshiken Nidaime thread
- Genshiken Nidaime Episode 06 thoughts
- Shingeki no Kyojin Episode 18 thoughts

I should be able to post via phone about:
- Rozen Maiden Episode 05
- Rozen Maiden Episode 06
- Servant x Service Episode 06
- Prisma Ilya Episode 05
- more thoughts on Dangan Ronpa Episode 06

Hopefully I can get things fixed in 24 hours. We'll see.

Apparently in less time than it takes for someone else to respond to the thread , I got my cable modem exchanged for what is apparently the latest technology. (Something called DOCSIS 3.0?) So I'm back on the computer and yeah, I should hopefully have that Genshiken thread out some time tomorrow.

Kaisa: D:

Yeah, it'll have to wait until at least then. ^^; Also ... I may as well go ahead and watch Episode 06 to see if it'll give me a better picture to use for Yajima. @_@ (Girl, why you gotta be so unphotogenic?)

Recorder to Randoseru ~Mi~: I watched Episodes 02 thru 04 a week or so ago and Episode 05 just now. Thoughts:

Spoiler: show
Episode 02 was cute. Liked the end where Sayo is sizing up Hina and imagines that once they hit middle school Hina will surely capture Atsushi's heart.

Episode 03 was gross and uncomfortable to watch. Not so much a lolikon as a total pedo was that one guy, and the shota in Atsumi's school wasn't appealing either. Just blegh. I dunno what it is (LOL DOUBLE STANDARDS) but I'm much more comfortable with Sayo's dilemma than I am with the gender swapped version.

Speak of the devil, Episode 04 was theoretically just as gross as Episode 03 -- and it indeed did cross the line quite far into uncomfortable territory by the end -- yet I wasn't as put off by it as I was by Episode 03.

Episode 05 got off to a really rough start. Terrible animation, terrible direction, and uncomfortable territory even for Sayo. But from the moment the beetle arrived forward, it was probably the best episode so far in Season 3.

It's a shame that such an already short series took such a budget hit that it now looks like it does, but I guess for its biggest fans that's much better than no more RtR at all.

Watamote: Just saw Episode 06. ..... *siiiiiiiiiigh*, why must this show be so depressing? It's not entertaining for that very reason. Watching Tomoko seek out love and affection from other human beings only to never receive it because of her looks and hobbies is something which, on the one hand, we feel really bad for her over and want to wish her best of luck in overcoming ... yet at the same time, paradoxically, we cannot fault anyone in her world for. Who among us would have wanted to date a Tomoko in high school? Particularly the one in this episode who:

Spoiler: show
hadn't bathed, had greasy hair, and was teeming with ants?

I dunno. I just don't know how to feel about this show.

Oh how much I'd want to say
Spoiler: show
"why the hell does that matter?! INNER BEAUTY, MAN!", but I know high school kids are...less than nice to anyone even slightly out of the norm. *sigh*

Maybe I'm conflicted about your comment because some years back I had the ultimate combination of hair that gets greasy super-fast, medication-required-level bad acne, braces and a "weird thing for Chinese cartoons" and video games. I can kinda-sorta see where other people are coming from with Tomoko, but...yeah I'm heavily biased.

Also: am I to understand that daily bathing is a thing in Japan for real? (As opposed to it being a thing in anime because fanservice.) It was just odd to think that Tomoko lives a life where skipping a daily bath/shower and how your body works with that are things she has no clue about. Do schools not teach this stuff in biology? Is Japan a magical land where the genes for greasy skin and/or hair don't exist and teenagers never have skin problems? *absolutely praying to god this is not actually the case*

And why didn't the brother say anything if he could see what was going on? Am I rare for having a mom who nagged out loud about me always having bad skin, no make-up and how I constantly needed a shower? I get you wouldn't think of telling a stranger they have bad skin, but...your own sister, who obviously is clueless about most things in life ever? You probably should tell her going out of the house looking like that is a bad idea.

Oh well...at least Tomoko got to spend time with other people for once? I thought the middle schooler who talked with her more was kinda sweet, though I don't exactly approve of what they were watching there. So it was at least somewhat of a happy ending no pun intended?

I couldn't find anything from the summer airings I was particularly interested in watching, so I'm watching Planetes instead. (dubbed)

Episode 1-3 general thoughts:
Spoiler: show
HOLY FUCK TANABE IS SO ANNOYING. Really hope she develops sometime soon because she's whats holding me back from believing this to be a great show.

Love the artstyle, the animation, the voice acting, etc. The plot idea is interesting but it seems like it'll get quite samey quickly and hopefully I won't get too bored if some of the episodes seem like repeats. I like the character interactions between Tanabe and Hachimaki, but I'm much more sided towards the latter. Tanabe is just annoying at the moment and I really hope she develops beyond this.

Tanabe Ai is probably one of my favorite anime characters of all time.

But you're not alone in disliking her. IIRC Mcsweeney couldn't really stand her either, and generally preferred the manga's version of events to the anime's. (I think both are fine, but if I had to pick ... honestly? I'd probably go for the anime.)

Planetes is one of the few anime I've watched three or more times. It's also one of the ones I own on DVD. I sure do hope you'll like it. Generally, I hope everyone checks it out and likes it. "You can't please everyone," so I realize there'll always be people out there who don't care for it. But personally? I think it remains one of the best anime of the past decade.

As for whether Tanabe gets better or worse, that largely depends on what it is that you hate so much about her. I can't even ask what it is (or, were you to answer, respond) because of not wanting to color your view of what's ahead. But I can at least vaguely offer that there are some things about Tanabe which remain the same while there are others which are shaken up by people she meets and events she experiences on the Toy Box, the space station, the Moon, and the Earth.

Planetes is positively brimming with symbolism, and one of the things Tanabe symbolizes is humanity's pureness of heart and mind. She represents this in all its colors, from the negative to the positive. Again, would love to explain more on this ... but I really can't. Not until you've finished the series.

While Tanabe is of course one of the two primary protagonists in the anime (the other being Hachimaki), one of the nice things about Planetes is that it is absolutely brimming with character development. From my review written back in early 2005:
Quote:
Characters: 10+/10. Planetes gets my current award for best characters in an anime. These characters are just so *human* it's insane. There exists so much diversity in the series. Different reasons for coming into space. Different optimisms/pessimisms. Different views on the way society is, the way society should be. And all of the views, again, are presented dynamically, beautifully, often tragically. This show has made me cry on no fewer than two occasions, both times thanks to character development that was frighteningly real, gripping, powerful.
As for my favorite character in the show ... I'll just have to wait until you report in with an indication that you've seen the appropriate episode. Hint: it's not Tanabe.

Hope you enjoy it.

I didn't say I disliked Tanabe, I just liked Hachi better, and wanted him to pursue his goals instead of ... I've said too much!

I recommended a friend Planetes, and he also found Tanabe to be intolerable, stopped watching around episode 7 and never picked it back up. This is a huge shame, because the second half of the show is beyond godlike. Please don't make the same mistake, keep going!

Back in black!

I picked up a hilarious manga. I'm not sure who would be partial to it, though. BBB, perhaps? It's got some dichotomous elements for him. The story's called Ketchup Ninja. Written by a Japanese manga-ka who spent time in America, it's about a Japanese girl who moves to the United States and enrolls in one of their typical high schools. She's a ninja too. It's a huge satire on every Japanese stereotype of America.

My favourite character is "Clergyman King".

It's especially funny since I just visited (last Thursday) MLK's tomb in Atlanta.

Currently partway through Chapter 4. It's cute, but once I finish it all, I don't know that I'll ever read more unless reminded to. But I'm liking it enough so far. It's not every day that we get to see American high school life in manga form, even if (like you said) it's kind of more like a parody than the real deal. Or at least, I sure as heck didn't go to a high school this unruly. ^_^;
