Finally some answers.

Microsoft is confirming today that its upcoming Xbox One console will need to connect to the internet every 24 hours for games to work. "Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection," says a statement from the software maker. Microsoft explains that Xbox One accounts can be used on other consoles to access digital libraries, but that an hourly internet check will be required in that particular case. Live TV, Blu-ray, and DVD movies will work without a connection check every 24 hours.

This is seriously a joke. As I've stated in the past, I know a few people in situations where they are unable to connect to an internet connection and yet have game consoles. This basically wipes them out of the picture entirely from the customer base. Like, if I want to play a Steam game offline I don't even have to put up with this garbage. This is just some really intrusive and upsetting DRM.

On the subject of used games, Microsoft says "game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers," and that the company "does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games." However, publishers can opt in or out of game resales and are free to set up transfer fees with retailers. Games can also be given to friends via their discs. There are no fees associated with the transfer, but you can only pass them to friends who have been on your Xbox list for at least 30 days and each game can only be transfered once. Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but Microsoft says it's exploring this as a possibility for the future.

Once a game has been purchased via disc or Xbox Live, everyone who uses it on one particular console will get access to the game. Up to ten members of a family can also log in and play from the shared games library on an Xbox One on an entirely different console.

Well... that sounds unnecessarily over complicated. It's not as cut and dry as we previously thought, but it's still essentially the same thing, especially given that it's going to be in the hands of the publishers.

It seems to me Microsoft is trying to create a solution to a "problem" while trying to appease both the consumer and the publisher at the same time and it just sounds like their answer is a huge mess.

Ars Technica reports that the PS4 will not be a region-locked console. Provided this means what we think it means, it's a major advantage in favor of the PS4 for:

• international gamers looking to import niche Japanese titles
• European gamers looking to import games from the USA for less

The latter isn't necessarily great for the European games market (unless it were to mean lower domestic prices?), and the former is a pretty niche demographic, but this is still a point that, if true, is sure to score favor points with the fans.

Of course, we've heard the song and dance before about how a console might not technically be region-locked but how its games still might be, i.e. "It's up to each publisher to decide whether they want their game to be region-locked or not; while we won't force that decision on them with our console, we will allow them to make that decision themselves by allowing games to still check what region a console came from." So hopefully that's not what this is. I could see it though, as I really doubt that Sony's European division would be too keen on losing all of their money to the American division.

UPDATE: Reading through the comments on that article, it seems that the PS3 was another of those "technically region-free but it boils down to the games' own region locking as to whether you can play imported games or not" deals. It also sounds like many European PS3 owners would attempt to circumnavigate the region locking of region-locked North American discs by spoofing an American IP address and/or having a faux American PSN account. Seems like a pain in the ass (especially when you want to bounce between regions), but if that's something Europeans were doing anyway, then maybe Sony's European division just said "Oh screw it " and threw their hands up with the PS4? Or maybe the PS4 is going to be little different than the PS3. Time will tell.
