YouTube conversions - is it time?

For years, I have shied away from downloading anything that is a YouTube conversion mp3. For years, it was how one parasited off would-be pirates in the same way you steal, upload, and secure advertising revenue from another uploader's video. And the reason for this was YT audio compression.

It's an easier matter with video, which can be evaluated visually and compared against a torrent of comparable quality. 720p is 720p, whether downloaded or as a stream. Music is a lot dicier due to less ability for the human ear to discern artifacts in the music until the volume is cranked up (artificially in studio).

Mp3Skull, long a stalwart of places to get mp3's, hasn't been killed off in a while. That's because it stopped hosting mp3 downloads (usually tumblr links) and is now, exclusively, hosting ugly YT audio rips. And I have no way of evaluating the quality of these versus the original.

It's pretty clear to me, when I have a .flac or a .cda, whether or not an mp3 is of acceptable quality. Some things like Disney works are never released as .flacs or lossless .cdas (Disney stuff ON CD is already lossy). I refuse to buy anything without knowing it's high quality to begin with.

But short of private trackers - with dubiously seeded mp3's - it looks like ripping off a stream seems to be the future. Which sucks, because there is way less quality control and/or methods to evaluate it.

Anyone got advice?

Sorry, can't help you there. I switched to Spotify a few years ago and never looked back. I'm considering switching to Google Play Music but haven't decided yet for sure.

The music I can't get on Spotify, like K-POP and J-Rock, I am usually able to find on tumblr or YouTube and have basically done my best to just look past the quality issues.

How do you find music on tumblr?

That's more or less what SkullMp3 became in later years, a tumblr mp3 tracker.
