How do I record videos/me talking along with it with No$gba?
I'm interested in doing a video series playing FRO, or doing a mono/nuzlocke run in standard FR Alternatively, I also have a VBA somewhere in the external harddrive.

I've never beaten the original Kanto elite four in the original or the remakes...of course i was 9 when the first game came out lol. but seriously I didn't even know blue was the champ of that game until I read it the other day. can anyone recommend a good team and good levels to use? I'de really like to go do the sevii island thing >.<

I haven't played the remakes, so I don't know, but at least for back in the day, you could pretty much mop up the entire Elite 4 with Starmie.
Starmie has ...
Suppose Moveset A. Here goes ...
EDIT: I'm vaguely recalling a Magneton and an Alakazam, but no idea how much of that is influenced by my recent playthrough of HGSS. Starmie can hold his own against Alakazam. Magneton is trickier but, hopefully, you can Surf him into oblivion.

Yeah, if you're lucky enough to end up with a Starmie on Nuzlocke you're kinda sorted for the E4.

You do realise I meant that No-one died at the Elite Four, right?
'Cause I've lost others. Gary has Pidgeot (Thunderbolt), Rhydon (Surf), Alakazam (Surf bcoz STAB), Arcanine/Charizard (Surf), Exeggcutor/Vensuaur (Ice Beam) and Gyarados/Blastoise (T-Bolt). Theoretically you have a sweep.

Now, having never done a Nuzlocke myself, I don't remember how all Nuzlocke works. If it prohibits the use of TMs, the only moves on those sets which Starmie can touch are Surf and Recover; and if it bans even the use of HMs in battle, then Recover alone is untouched. Even if Nuzlocke does allow you to use your TMs, you're going to have to be 100% certain that your Starmie will. never. die. before you invest your TMs in him. After all, we're not talking Mega Punch and Bullet Seed here: we're talking Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, and Psychic. To lose your Starmie once you've invested all of these excellent TMs in him would be to lose everything you'd invested hope in.
So, I guess it turns out, Starmie may be too risky for a Nuzlocke run. In order for him to work, he requires too much of your treasure. He's a great Pokémon, but losing him after you've built him up is going to be crippling to any Nuzlocke run. It would perhaps be advisable, then, to construct the following alternate team:
That way, even if you lose Starmie, all you've lost is Surf (which you still have). Losing Raichu doesn't mean losing TM24, nor does losing Alakazam mean losing TM29. They learn their moves naturally, and so if you lose them you've only to go back and capture and re-train another of their species. I don't care much about the idea of using a legendary since that seems like it defeats the purpose of doing a Nuzlocke, but I'm guessing that legends are banned anyway so it's irrelevant. If you really want to have somebody on the team who uses Ice Beam or Blizzard, you could always try for Jynx. Thing is, as far as I can remember, Jynx isn't exactly the easiest to come by in RBY. Feel free to teach Ice Beam to Starmie still: just keep in mind that if you lose Starmie, you lose TM13 with it. EDIT: Well, I see that indeed Poke_Hunter did use an Articuno. So I guess they are allowed. Seems a little cheap to me, but whatever: capturing a legendary during a Nuzlocke run hardly seems easy if soft-resetting your game is disallowed.

No idea how PH got Articuno unless he spammed repels with a high-level team all through the seafoam islands.

Almost. Spammed Repel with a Master Ball. Also: I was doing the most basic of runs, with the dupe clause enabled, with some minor adjustments: -Perma-Boxing instead of releasing -Each bit of the Safari Zone counts as it's own area.

Starmie shouldn't be TOO impossible. By these definitions, there are tons of water "areas" in the game, most of which afford you some chance at fishing a Staryu out of the water. Then all you've got to do is weaken it, Sleep Powder it, and throw your ball. Only being allowed to purchase one PokéBall per mart, though, is pretty bad. Coupled with the "you MUST attempt to capture the first Pokémon you encounter in a new area" rule, and coupled with the fact that early in the game you will not have enough money to buy infinite repels, it means that you're probably going to waste all of your PokéBalls on the first one or two creatures you're forced into trying to capture and will then have 0 or 1 PokéBall for every other wild creature encounter you have.
Soo ... yeah. The hard-core Nuzlocke rules sound retarded unfun. There's "fun challenge," there's "not so fun challenge," and there's "challenge that will only be worth it if other people care." And sadly, no one will care strongly enough to have made it worth suffering through. That's my view, anyway. Those of you who feel differently, whatever.

I generally run down as far as "no items except HM's" or the one just before it and leave it there. Never been too hardcore lol.

Gengar is slower than Starmie. Base 110 vs. 115. And since most in-game enemies don't do anything remotely like EV training, it should not be a threat.

This was completely unnecessary. I said he threatens to outrun, not he will outrun. You assume the Starmie is at Gengar's level. I don't. I make no assumptions.

It was misleading in my eyes. Even with a slight level bonus, it's very easy to outrace most of the E4's Pokemon even with generalized EV spread. But with Nuzlocke, I suppose you might end up with a speed penalizing personality and be f'd over. But like Concept said, Starmie says GG, especially if TMs are being used.

Really, Starmie is deceptively bulky. That 60/85/85 defensive setup can take a hit or two, and Gengar, counting 3rd gen, is only hitting with SE Shadow Balls from a puny 65 attack. Thunderbolt, on the other hand...but even then, I've seen much worse.
Case in point, my recently failed Touhoumon run, which was full of utter bullshit (Sheer Cold is now an ice-type Hyper Beam) where the E4 demolished my squad of level 60 heroes. My newest run (3 regi and slave Nuzlocke) came into a spot of bother when a level 10 Machop did over 50% to my level 10 Regirock with Low Kick. My Treecko had to hop in and an heroed it. |
