Your anthem sucks

The United States seems to have a penchant for the sappy, serious, dramatic song. In California, the state song is "I Love You California" and the US anthem is the "Star Spangled Banner". Both are noticeably inferior to the far more recognizable (especially in film) runner-ups, "California Here I Come" and "America the Beautiful".

Proof:

NFL on Jose Canuse
America the Beautiful

I Love You Pot
California, Here I Come!

Do other countries have this problem? I think "Rule Britannia" is pretty cool.

Australia and "Advance Australia Fair"
Who the hell uses "girt"?

I mean, "Waltzing Matilda" and "I am Australian" are more well known around here. I'm sure there are a few more as well.

Yeah, like no one actually knows our entire anthem. I didn't even know that there was a second verse until the end of primary school.

As much as I think Advance Australia Fair sounds outdated, those two are no better. Waltzing Matilda is definitely not an anthem. I am Australian is closer. Advance Australia Fair is the most anthem-y of those three, but I think that Land Down Under is superior to all of them.

Also this :P There's like five verses and nobody can sing past the first one.

Personally I like Rule Britannia. The Russian National Anthem is badass too. If we could have something that sounds strong, similar to those, I'd be happier singing the anthem.

With Russia's and Britain's, it helps that the lyrics of the songs are basically "WE ARE AWESOME, WE RULE, GLORY TO US". The military songs of the US are similar: they're all about how powerful, fierce, and just plain impressive the respective branches are on top of being catchy.

"America the Beautiful" works as such a good anthem because it's not only got a catchy melody you can automatically associate with the US, it's all about how America is great (although more peaceful than other songs).

Now, "California Here I Come" just has a better melody over "I Love You California", as far as the description goes I think the latter is actually better.

I have to agree wholeheartedly.

"Our land is girt by sea", why not just use the word surrounded?

I personally love "girt"! I think it makes it more unique - and it makes for great jokes (see The Last Continent, for example).

I don't love Advance Australia Fair, but I like it okay. I would hate it if Waltzing Matilda were our anthem. |: And I like Land Down Under as much as the next person, but I don't think it really works as an anthem?

I wouldn't mind a different flag, however...

I really dislike the Star Spangled Banner, particularly the second verse- "And conquer we must, when our cause it is just, and this be our motto- 'In God is our trust'". No. Every no in the world.

Advance Australia Fair sounds anthem-y, while Waltzing Matilda is just a catchy song about a guy who kills himself. To me it would be like making "You are my Sunshine" the national anthem for the US.

States are fundamentally countries, so it's not surprising. A few of the states were originally their own republics prior to admission to the US, and I would surmise some anthems are even relics of those bygone eras.

I must hear this song.

I can say the US already does worse than "You are my Sunshine". It's a really nice song even if completely irrelevant to the country itself.

Waltzing Matilda is pretty excellent.

So, obviously the British anthem is God Save the Queen (my personal favourite variation linked) but the individual nations are interesting. They all have unofficial anthems, which are generally used at sporting events although it varies with the sport. Wales's one is great, the Scots have a few that they use, the English have Jerusalem which I really like. I can't recall if the Northern Irish have their own.

UK: "God Save the Queen" is okay but one of my all-time favorite national anthems is definitely "Rule Britannia". It's a shame that so many English people today are ashamed of that song because of its loltastically strong imperialist (or should I even say supremacist) tones. But I dunno. Ethnic supremacy/imperialism aside, the lyrics feel mighty and the melody is exactly what you want an anthem to be.

AUS: I used to play "Waltzing Matilda" all the time on my keyboard as a kid. Really love that song. Not familiar with the actual Australian national anthem though, sorry. ^^;

USA: "The Star-Spangled Banner" is okay. I like the poem a hell of a lot more than the melody, to be perfectly honest. "America the Beautiful" I think I like less (both the poem and the melody), but as a teenager I think I felt the other way around. And it's not like I'm saying I dislike both and am picking a least favorite. I think both are fine.

My favorite American national song might be "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" from the Civil War. It's a pretty good song, New World Protestant overtones be damned.

FRA: Well, it goes without saying that "La Marseillaise" is one of my favorite national anthems. As a 21st-century national anthem for the nation, it definitely feels ... out of place? ^_^; I mean, it would be like if the national anthem of America were the Battle Hymn of the Republic! La Marseillaise feels like a call to revolution, a song that men would belt out as they marched down the country roads towards the city to join the burgeoning throngs of revolutionaries. Its very lyrics detail the death and suffering of the French peasantry in the dying days of Louis XVI's reign. But that doesn't keep it from being a good song. On the contrary, it just reaffirms its badassness.

JPN: I ... actually don't know Japan's national anthem. ^^;

Japan's national anthem is 君が代 (Kimigayo)

It's from a poem written in the 800s and my Japanese friends say it sounds like a funeral song. Can't say I disagree with them. The lyrics are strong enough, but the melody is... yeah.

Fun fact, Kimigayo is the shortest National Anthem in the world.

The only thing that stands out about the Canadian anthem, creatively named O Canada, is that it is the second half frequently sung French. And from what I understand is that the French version of the song is more, um, patriotic? More 'we are the best'? Also at some very important even we still sing "God save the Queen" for our British roots.

And then there's Shatner's version

I would much prefer to have Jerusalem as the national anthem, even if the correct response to the entire song is "no, dumbass". It just sounds so much better than God Save The Insert Appropriate Gender Monarch Here. Land of Hope and Glory would also be acceptable. I Vow to Thee my Country is another option, but ehhhh it's way too jingoistic for my tastes. I'm ok with God Save The Queen because I quite like the Queen.

I have to say, "California, Here I Come" just has a very juvenile sound to it for me and I wouldn't want it as the state anthem.

I like the Star-Spangled Banner okay, but not the (thankfully) less-known secondary verses.

I do wish we could have an anthem that wasn't so fighty, though.
