Yikes that was not a good win for Ash. Someone on /vp/ said Ash was the Alain/Tobias of this battle to Hau, and I can see that. It wouldn't have been so bad if the scoreboard didn't declare Hau the winner and show him celebrating, like if he was just declared the winner but then they quickly saw Rowlett was still asleep. There's no reason to reverse a decision like that.
Besides that Rowlett was taking damage the whole battle and only hit Decidueye...twice, I think? Is that really enough to KO a 3 stage pokemon? Now that we had that fake out I wonder if they can have Ash lose again, because if Ash does win this league overall it'll feel a bit cheap. I don't know why the writers wrote themselves into a corner like this, I guess because SM is a silly slice of life saga and the Galar region is probably going to go back to the way things were in DP, XY, etc? That's what I'm assuming anyway. |

Two STAB Brave Birds on a x2 weakness? Yeah that would do it.
Remember Pikachu took Latios down with 7 hits, all resisted, and the last 3 Thunderbolts were x4 resisted. Rowlet's new move is Substitute, NOT Feather Dance, and he spammed it throughout this battle to avoid taking the kill shot from Decidueye's God Birds.

You know its kind of funny the writers had Ash come in Top 8 for three different leagues (Johto, Hoenn and Unova), and now they have no qualms of him making it to the finals. I never understood why they had Ash lose so "early" in some of the previous leagues, because a loss is still a loss, whether it happens in the finals or round 8, 4, etc...it makes no difference because fans will complain Ash lost again anyway.
I remember during the Sinnoh league people making a big deal out of Ash reaching the Top 4 for the first time like it was a huge accomplishment, when in retrospect it didn't really matter. As I said, a loss is still a loss. |

Ash lost for unconnected reasons.
Indigo: Honest to goodness creative decision. Intended as a twist. Johto: Shameless plug for Hoenn Hoenn: Transition to FRLG/Emerald advertising Sinnoh: Ran out of episodes Unova: Writers lost control of the show Kalos: Head director was a cuck After OS, the league was never really that important to the writers, but it remained a big deal with the fans. That disparity in perception is why there's been years of animosity. And likely, why that Ash/Hau fake out was so effective at trolling people.

It probably didn't help Ash lost all of them. He should have honestly started winning leagues by either Hoenn or DP at the latest. Hell winning the Hoenn league would have made sense as an invitation to challenge the Battle Frontier, rather than it just happening because Scott of the BF saw Ash. And of course DP seemed like it was originally set-up for Ash Vs. Paul to be the finals with Tobias never existing.
Oh well. The writers brought it upon themselves. Back in 1998 nobody could have possibility predicted Ash would still be around 22 years later losing 6+ more leagues. It's absurd when you stop to think about it, so its easy to see why so many original fans are jaded, lost interest, etc. |

So Suiren's Primarina tanked:
Throat Chop Poison Jab Poison Jab Poison Jab Poison Jab Poison Jab Throat Chop Liquidation That's some incredible durability. Throat Chops and Liquidation I can understand, but that's FIVE super effective Poison Jabs.

Golisopod used it before, against Pikachu. But he was the first Pokemon to ever use Liquidation.

So apparently there is a "leak" on Bulbagarden about the finals matchup.
Worth noting that the finals are being animated right about now. If we go by when Unshou Ishizuka died, he had 8 episodes of dialogue recorded. We have episode titles for the next 4 episodes, meaning that episodes 4-8 should be storyboarded and animated right now (as recording comes before the animation). My speculation is this is a Malaysian/Korean/Philippine animator who is drawing the battle as we speak. Take it with a grain of salt. Spoiler: show I'm going to guess that Lycanroc uses the Z-Move in this, since Silvally cannot use Z-Crystals and Memories, and Gladion does not have any Z-Crystal that will work with Umbreon's moves (Dark Pulse, Shadow Ball, Iron Tail).

Gladion doesn't have any Z-Crystals that work with Umbreon's moves that we know of. All we need is Umbreon to use Quick Attack or something like that, and boom- there's the makings of Breakneck Blitz right there. That said, I'm still inclined to agree that Lycanroc's gonna be the one going for a Z-Move.
What I'm more interested to know is, will we see Meltan/Melmetal making use of the Steelium Z? |

Also, someone pointed this out on Serebii.net, but Zoroark's Illusion should not work in the anime because Gladion carries all of his Pokemon in a unique Pokeball.
Lycanroc - Ultra Ball Silvally - Premier Ball Umbreon - Heal Ball Zoroark - Dusk Ball As soon as he throws out the Dusk Ball, it is obvious Zoroark, although nobody except Gladion knows he caught that one.

So we're near the end now, Gladion Vs. Kiawe turned out as expected and now we have Guzma Vs. Ash. I have to say seeing Guzma screwed over by Scizor popping back out and getting one-hit KO'd was hilarious. Hopefully they show Guzma more unhinged in the next episode and after the league ends given how much he wanted to battle Kukui.
One missed opportunity is how Ash seemingly isn't getting Incineroar. It's actually strange, Incineroar had all the marketing of being the next Charizard/Sceptile/Infernape/Greninja of this saga, it was even put into Smash Bros, but the anime seems to be keeping Torracat in its middle form. I would have thought that with Rowlett being the typical, "unevolved starter too cute and marketable to evolve" that they would have let Torracat go all the way. I mean I know we had middle stage starters before like Bayleef in Johto and Pignite, but unlike them, Torracat's "development" just doesn't feel finished. Torracat evolving halfway into SM pacing wise seemed set up for another evolution before SM ended but now it feels too late. Really weird, would have liked to see Ash's Incineroar go up against Kukui's. |

Some people are really looking in to the 4 v 3 thing but I honestly wouldn’t place too much stock in it. Golisopod is still shown as well. So I’d expect Torrocat or Pikachu not to be used. I think Torrocat will drop off simply because no Pikachu in the final match isn’t going to happen.

I think Pikachu and Torracat get mauled against Guzma. The preview looks really brutal, and we know this Golisopod is strong enough to slice Z-Moves in half. The now-barbecued Scizor was strong enough to solo Megas.
I'm just hoping that Melmetal is a mid-battle evolution, and not something that happens before the league. The narrative convention is that a last-minute power-up that looks like it will win you a tournament, actually falls short. Think Trunks "Ascended Saiyan" versus Cell, or Kenshin/Saito/Sanosuke learning their power ups ahead of Makoto Shishioh. The new unstoppable ability falls short.

Well this is it, if Ash beats Gladion he does win the league. I mean there's still a chance Ash gets screwed over in the finals because you know, it's the writers, but things are looking toward him winning. I'm getting flashbacks to Greninja/Mega Charizard though, so I'm not getting my hopes up.
